<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="805628" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indy-500">Indy 500</keyword> is one of the most famous races in <keyword id="735786" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="motorsports">motorsports</keyword>.</li><li>At speeds of over 220 mph, drivers tear around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for 500 miles, or 200 laps.</li><li>But while driving an oval racetrack may seem fairly straightforward, surviving just one lap requires an expert behind the wheel. We talked to driver and winner of 2016's Indy 500 Alex Rossi who took us through each and every turn.</li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></p><p><strong><keyword id="76139" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Alexander-Rossi">Alexander Rossi</keyword>:</strong> Hey what's up guys I'm Alexander Rossi. <keyword id="78749" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="IndyCar">IndyCar</keyword> driver for Andretti Autosport. I drive the #27 NAPA AutoNation Honda and I won the 2016 <keyword id="378715" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Indianapolis-500">Indianapolis 500</keyword>.</p><p>So you roll off on what is kind of four pace and parade laps. The first one, you do a salute to the fans. So the first lap is very slow and you're just waving to the fans. Then the second and third lap you go single file and that's when you get the engine temperature, the tire temperature, the brake temperature all to the levels that you want. And the team's kind of talking you through that. And then the final lap you form back into the grid formation, eleven rows of three.</p><p>You know what you're trying to do is just maintain the speed off the car on your inside because he's really the one setting the pace. And then from that point you're just waiting until the row in front of you accelerates, and you try to go with them. You know, you want to get a jump on the <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> around you, but ultimately it's a 500 mile race. There's so much that's gonna happen in the next three hours that the last thing you want to do is throw it all away going into Turn 1.</p><p>As we're going into Turn 1 this is the first time you're actually seeing the grandstands full. Because of that, it looks a lot narrower than it has the previous few weeks that you've been practicing because the light's not coming in, there's different kinds of shadows and reflections that you see. It's actually kind of intimidating the first time that you go through there. It takes your mind three or four laps to adjust to the visual sensation.</p><p>So going into Turn 1, there's cars that are taking a bigger risk than other cars for sure. Going two wide, or three wide you can only do on starts and restarts. And the reason for that is you're accelerating from such a slower speed out of Turn 4 that by the time you get to Turn 1 you're only doing 180, 190 mph. While that's still fast, it's a lot faster when you're going 240 mph. So your margin for being able to explore different lines only exists on starts and restarts, and from there you see it kind of fall into more single file <keyword id="6360432" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="RACING">racing</keyword>.</p><p>As much as geometrically Turns, 1, 2, 3 and 4 are identical, they're all very different. So you're using the short chutes to kind of change the balance of the car based on how it was through Turn 1 that lap.</p><p>The typical kind of balance you have is you have a bit of understeer exit of 1 and into 2. Between the short chute of 1 and 2 you are usually stiffening your rear anti-roll bar, softening your front anti-roll bar, or putting left front weight. So you can change the cross weight of the car. You can move up to 150 pounds from the right front tire to the left front tire. This obviously changes the balance of the car quite a bit.</p><p>So in terms of the easiest places to crash, it's usually Turns 2 or 4. And that is because the tires are at their peak temperature exiting Turns 1 and 3. So when you go into Turn 2 and 4 you have much less margin for error. Whereas when you go into 1 and 3 they have the entire straightaway to cool down and center themselves. The short chutes between 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 don't allow them to cool down enough so you have to be super precise with what you do or the price is just exponential.</p><p>These cars are so aerodynamically dependent, and they're made to be run by themselves. So that means when the wings and the floor of the car are developed, they're made in a space where the air coming at it is clean, and the cars go through it as if it was brand new virgin air. Well when you're behind cars that are going through that air, they're actually dirtying up the air and it's coming at the car in a much more disconnected fashion so it actually reduces the performance of your car.</p><p>Where this comes back to your advantage is in the straights. So because they're basically having to punch a hole through clean air, that means that you don't have to do that anymore, so that's where the draft and slipstream comes into play. </p><p>So the main goal of the Indianapolis is, how do you find a car balance that you can stay close enough behind the car in front of you to not lose a draft, but then still fast enough in a straight line to pass them. Because you can obviously put down force on, raise the rear wing angle, really glue your car to the track and be able to corner really well and follow someone super close. But then when you're in a straight and you try to slipstream past them you don't have enough straight line speed. So it's all about finding that balance of "this is the least amount of grip I can get by with, while still being able to pass cars.</p><p>So going into Turn 3 you can see the sparks coming from the car in front. One thing to keep in mind in a race like this is that because it's so long, the tire pressures are pretty low at the start of the stint. So what you have is the car bottom, it actually touches the ground. It's what we call bottoming. So when that happens there's actually less of a tire on the ground which is fine, but you have to be prepared for it because the car can actually move a little bit, and it's hitting the deck so it's not as composed as it would be.</p><p>And then going into Turn 4, as you're completing the lap, this is the first time you're able to get a balance check of what the car's doing. That first lap you're really seeing "Did I make the right call? Is everything as I expected it to be?"</p><p>But as I mentioned, it's such a long race that even if the first balance check that you do isn't quite what you were hoping for or expecting, there's enough pit stops throughout the race where you can tune on the car, adjust tire pressures and wing angles, that theoretically if you play your cards right, by the end of the race you can dial in your car to be what you need it to be to win.</p><p>So as you start Lap 2 it's at this point that you kind of start to have an idea of what the car is doing, and you start to analyze people's strengths and weaknesses. And start trying to analyze your areas of attack as the day goes on.</p><p>And quite honestly that changes. It changes every 5 to 10 laps. As your fuel load decreases your car balance changes. Temperatures are always fluctuating, and a 2 to 3 degrees change in track temperature can make a big difference on the balance of your car. And it's the guy that's able to stay on top of it the most and make the right calls and obviously have a good car underneath him that's ultimately able to win the Indianapolis 500.</p><p>The 2016 Indy 500 was my first 500. It was my second race ever on an oval. Throughout the race we were having a lot of problems refueling the car. Every time I came into the pits we'd kind of fall back, I'd lose position because we were taking so long to put fuel in the car.</p><p>My strategist and team owner, Bryan Herta, came up with a strategy, a high risk, roll the dice, we're gonna do one less pit stop than everyone else and try to save fuel. So we're gonna eliminate stopping one final time and stretch our fuel to make it to the end. We always knew we were gonna run out of fuel on the final lap, it was just gonna be a matter of when, and were we gonna have enough of a lead to basically coast across the finish line. </p><p>So we had enough fuel to get us out of Turn 2 into Turn 3, and as we were in the short chute between 3 and 4 we ran out of gas. So I just pulled the clutch in and just waited and literally just free-wheeled from the middle of Turn 4 all the way to the finish line. We started the lap with a 24 second lead and won by 3.8 seconds. "There are also very practical benefits in terms of aligning and visibility of our brand with other brands that share that drive for innovation and have an audience that can appreciate the story that Lenovo is telling."</p><p>That perception of F1 is not new to their hardcore fan but is in the corporate world. The last full-time American driver on the grid was the aptly named Scott Speed, who raced for Toro Rosso in 2006 and 2007. Before Speed, you have to go all the way back to Mario Andretti in 1982, who was the last American to win an F1 race.</p><p>Sargeant, who is currently third in the F2 standings with one race remaining, must finish sixth or better in the final standings to earn his Super License. Sargeant has a 12-point lead over the seventh-place driver, making it likely that he will secure his license if he can finish the race.</p><div type="image" title="Logan Sargeant" height="1667" width="2500" msid="95087543" hostid="261" sizebytes="132824"></div><p>But none of this would be possible if IndyCar driver Colton Herta had not failed in his quest to be granted a Super License shortcut. </p><p>Herta had long been considered the favorite to be the next American in F1. However, he was short of qualifying for the Super License needed from F1's governing body, the FIA. The required license uses a point system based on how a driver performs in other series, with additional points awarded for participating in F1 practice sessions.</p><p>In September, we learned that <a href="https://www.insider.com/f1-2023-colton-herta-alpha-tauri-super-license-2022-9">AlphaTauri was willing to allow Pierre Gasly to jump to Alpine</a>, but only if the FIA would grant Herta a Super License exemption. While some feel the point system is unduly harsh on IndyCar drivers, <a href="https://www.insider.com/f1-2023-colton-herta-alpha-tauri-super-license-2022-9">some teams were against Herta skipping the line</a>.</p><p>The FIA eventually ruled against Herta's hopes of moving to F1 in 2023.</p><h2>The decision caused an unexpected series of moves</h2><p>At the time, it was thought that Herta's disqualification was the end of any hope that an American driver would race next season, as Gasly was then set to remain with AlphaTauri. However, as teams scrambled to fill their seats, another young driver came along and impressed the F1 world.</p><p>The lesser-known Sargeant suddenly jumped to the top of teams' lists, and it all started with a case of appendicitis.</p><h3>Here is the series of moves that inadvertently opened the door for Sargeant:</h3><ol><li>Williams driver Alex Albon undergoes surgery for appendicitis. <a href="https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/12040/12707770/alex-albon-williams-drivers-explains-appendicitis-ordeal-after-surgery-complications">He suffered complications from the surgery and was forced to miss the Italian Grand Prix</a>.</li><li>Williams turned to Mercedes reserve driver Nyck de Vries as Albon's replacement. The former F2 and Formula E champion impressed the F1 world by finishing ninth and scoring points for Williams, six spots ahead of his veteran teammate, Nicholas Latifi.</li><li>After the performance, de Vries was considered the heavy favorite to replace Latifi at Williams for 2023. However, he did note that it was also the iconic number used by American racing legend Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR.</p><p>Since 2014, drivers have been allowed to pick their car number upon joining F1. While <a href="https://www.insider.com/f1-2023-grid-daniel-ricciardo-future-grim-2022-9">Ricciardo's signature No. 3 is not expected to be on the grid in 2023</a>, F1's sporting regulations will not let Sargeant use the number.</p><p>According to the FIA, "a driver's career in Formula 1 will be deemed to have ended if he does not participate in an Event for two (2) entire consecutive Championships." In other words, Ricciardo will still be an F1 driver in 2023 and 2024, even if he doesn't participate in any races, and as long as he is a driver, he keeps the No. 3.</p><p>Interestingly, <a href="https://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/11/daniel-ricciardo-dale-earnhardt-f1">Ricciardo also picked the No. 3 because of Earnhardt</a>, as the Australian grew up a huge fan of the NASCAR legend.</p><div type="image" title="Daniel Ricciardo" height="1667" width="2500" msid="95068753" hostid="261" sizebytes="131166"></div><p>To make matters worse for Sargeant, drivers must use the same number during their entire career, with the one exception being that the defending champion may switch to the No. 1 if they choose — Lewis Hamilton did not change after any of his titles, but Max Verstappen did switch to No. 1 this year. So once Sargeant picks a number next season, he won't be allowed to change it to No. 3 in 2025, the earliest it could become available.</p><p>Sargeant, part of the Williams Driver Academy, races for Carlin and has surprised many with his performance in his first F2 season. He became the first American to win an F2 race earlier this season at the British Grand Prix and later added a second win at the Austrian Grand Prix.</p><p>As for other potential numbers, Sargeant is going to run into the same problem. Sargeant uses the No. 6 in F2, but that number faces the same issue as it is being used this season by Latifi. Before Speed, you have to go all the way back to Mario Andretti in 1982, who was the last American to win an F1 race.</p><p>Sargeant will be the second American to get an F1 test drive this year, joining the more well-known IndyCar driver, Colton Herta, who tested with McLaren. However, Herta's test was mid-week and private and not part of an official race weekend.</p><div type="image" title="Colton Herta" height="1667" width="2500" msid="93307475" hostid="261" sizebytes="115794"></div><p>While Herta has long been considered the most likely to break through as the next American F1 driver thanks to his ties to McLaren and Michael Andretti's hopes for an F1 expansion team, Sargeant might have the clearer and quicker path.</p><p>So far, Andretti's hopes of buying an F1 expansion team have not received enough support from other teams and seem to have stalled.</p><p>As for McLaren, Herta has other challengers for a potential seat, in IndyCar drivers Pato O'Ward (who already drives for McLaren's IndyCar team) and Álex Palou (who will join McLaren in 2023 with his eyes set on F1). There is also the question of when McLaren will have an available seat. <a href="https://www.insider.com/f1-drivers-2023-grid-rumors-fernando-alonso-sebastian-vettel-2022-8">Daniel Ricciardo is under contract for 2023 and has said he plans to be in the car, meaning an opening might not come until 2024</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, both Williams drivers, Alex Albon and Nicholas Latifi, have contracts that expire this season. While Albon has a good shot of returning, Latifi is expected to be out, possibly opening the door for Sargeant.</p><p>One thing that could stand in the way of Sargeant is the unknown status of Australian prospect Oscar Piastri. The 2021 F2 champion is Alpine's reserve driver and on Tuesday, Alpine announced Piastri would be their second driver in 2023. However, <a href="https://twitter.com/oscarpiastri/status/1554527452231262210?s=21&amp;t=O0fad6K7RKkkHZH6fqs2NA">Piastri later debunked that announcement,</a> saying he has not signed a contract and would not be their driver next year.</p><p>This could mean that Piastri is already committed to another team and Williams is one team he has been linked to for next season. If so, that would close the door on Sargeant. </p><div type="image" title="Logan Sargeant" height="1667" width="2500" msid="93307476" hostid="261" sizebytes="132824"></div><h2>Sargeant could be left without a car to drive if he performs too well</h2><p>Also complicating matters is if Sargeant wins the F2 championship. Drivers who win the title are not allowed to return the next season. If Sargeant doesn't get the Williams seat, he could be elevated to reserve driver, the same path taken by Piastri. But like Piastri, that would leave Sargeant without a car to drive next season.</p><p>Williams team principal Jost Capito called this potentially a good problem to have, while also calling Sargeant a future F1 driver.</p><p>"It would be a great headache, wouldn't it?" Capito said earlier this season. "I've had worse ones. Of course, we are impressed. You know, it's his first season in F2. We didn't put any pressure on him. So as I said, he has the time to develop, and he's really impressed us with how fast he has got to grips with the car, about the tire management and getting results ... He will be in a Formula 1 car in the future, I'm absolutely convinced."</p><p>With F1 making strong in-roads with the American audience thanks to the Netflix series "Drive to Survive," the success of the US Grand Prix and Miami Grand Prix, and the incoming Las Vegas Grand Prix, those fans may soon have an American to root for on the grid. If Logan Sargeant is the one to emerge, they will quickly learn that name.</p>

Little-known 21-year-old driver has quietly emerged as a strong candidate to bring an American face back to F1

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Colton Herta appears to be close to joining AlphaTauri for the 2023 season.</li><li>Herta still doesn't have enough points for a Super License, but some think F1 will make an exemption.</li></ul><p>Formula One is close to adding its first American driver in seven years, but it will only happen if the sport finds a way around the fact that he is not yet eligible.</p><p>Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko told SpeedCity Broadcasting on SiriusXM (<a href="https://racer.com/2022/09/04/herta-alphatauri-deal-agreed-if-license-exemption-approved-says-marko/">via Racer</a>) that their sister team, AlphaTauri, has reached an agreement with American Colton Herta to join the team in 2023. </p><p>However, there is a huge problem: The IndyCar driver isn't eligible for F1 because he doesn't have an FIA Super License yet, and there is no path for him to earn enough points before next season.</p><p>To drive in F1, a driver must qualify for a Super License. Among the criteria, applicants must earn 40 points over the course of three preceding seasons (over the last four years, to allow for pandemic-related hardships) in other FIA sanctioned series. Herta has 32 points from IndyCar, and the best-case scenario is he could earn six more after the season by participating in the final six FP1 practice sessions with AlphaTauri. Still, that would leave him two points short.</p><p>This is where F1's governing body, the FIA, steps in. With the sport's popularity surging in the US and three American races on the schedule next season, the FIA could be inclined to give Herta an exception to get an American on the grid as soon as possible. </p><p>Marko confirmed that the FIA is weighing whether to give Herta a Super License, and he expects a decision this week.</p><div type="image" title="Christian Horner and Helmut Marko" height="1667" width="2500" msid="94036512" hostid="261" sizebytes="267810"></div><p>A second hurdle for Herta appears to have already been cleared. McLaren held an F1 option on Herta (he recently tested with the team), but <a href="https://racer.com/2022/09/04/herta-alphatauri-deal-agreed-if-license-exemption-approved-says-marko/">according to Racer's Chris Medland</a>, they have waived their claim as they have moved on to Oscar Piastri to replace Daniel Ricciardo.</p><p>Herta would be the first American driver in F1 since current IndyCar driver Alexander Rossi started five races in 2015. Before Speed, you have to go all the way back to Mario Andretti in 1982, the last American to win an F1 race.</p><h2>Some prominent voices are against an exemption for Herta</h2><p>While F1 could benefit from having an American on the grid next season, not everybody is in favor of giving Herta a Super License, including F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.</p><p>"The sport needs to respect the rules," Domenicali told Autosport (<a href="https://www.espn.com/f1/story/_/id/34523623/american-driver-colton-herta-verge-f1-race-seat-red-bull-junior-team-alphatauri?platform=amp">via ESPN</a>). "Of course, American drivers or other drivers are very important. If he is eligible to come in F1 because he has the points, it's fantastic news. But there is a ladder to follow, there is a protocol to respect, and that is the situation. So it's really what I believe is right to do."</p><p>One thing holding Herta back is that IndyCar is not viewed as highly as F1's feeder series, Formula 2, since the FIA does not govern the American series.</p><p>Some team principals, including Haas boss Gunther Steiner, are open to changing the rules but don't want them to be skirted as they are now.</p><p>"I don't want to be sitting here and saying, 'Oh, an IndyCar race, we know it's as good as this,'" Steiner said at the Dutch Grand Prix. "You cannot compare it. If we want to change the rule, let's discuss it, you know, and then fix it for the future if you think it's wrong. But there needs to be an agreement between the stakeholders in it."</p><div type="image" title="Guenther Steiner" height="1638" width="2500" msid="94036514" hostid="261" sizebytes="80834"></div><p>Mercedes boss Toto Wolff agreed.</p><p>"It would be great to have an American in F1, and it obviously would give us a good boost," Wolff said. "But I think the points system is there for a reason. The regulations are the regulations, and I would really hope the Americans can somehow score enough points to make it in F1."</p><p>Steiner also noted that other IndyCar drivers have Super Licenses within the rules. </p><h2>It is not clear yet who Herta would replace at AlphaTauri</h2><p>AlphaTauri is yet to confirm that current drivers Pierre Gasly or Yuki Tsunoda won't be back next season, but they could be in the market for one or even two new drivers.</p><p><a href="https://the-race.com/formula-1/gasly-close-to-alpine-move-as-terms-of-red-bull-exit-agreed/">According to Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm of The Race</a>, Alpine has agreed to buy out the remaining year of Gasly's contract with AlphaTauri, opening the door for him to move to the French team if the two sides can come to an agreement. Several reports have stated that Alpine wants to keep its options open for now.</p><div type="image" title="Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda" height="1666" width="2500" msid="94036515" hostid="261" sizebytes="182230"></div><p>Red Bull team principal Christian Horner suggested that Gasly's move could be contingent on the FIA approving Herta's Super License.</p><p>"We just need clarity on what is the situation regarding driver points, which hopefully will come sooner rather than later," <a href="https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/red-bull-waiting-fia-rule-herta-superlicence-2022-09-04/">Horner said at the Dutch Grand Prix</a>. "That plays a key role obviously in the driver merry-go-round ... [we won't release Gasly] if we don't have something exciting to put in that car."</p><p>Tsunoda's contract expires at the end of the season, and it is still up in the air if he will be back with Red Bull's sister team next year. Team principal Franz Tost said if Tsunoda can eliminate some of the crashes, he has "a good chance" to remain with the team — hardly a ringing endorsement.</p><p>F2 racer Liam Lawson could be next in line after Herta. He is a Red Bull junior driver and recently completed his first F1 practice with AlphaTauri. <a href="https://www.planetf1.com/news/red-bull-prefer-own-people-pierre-gasly-replacement/">Marko suggested that their junior drivers would be given preference</a>, saying, "We have our own program. The team will use the test to evaluate Herta and see if he is ready to fill one of the team's two rookie race-weekend testing sessions in a 2022 car.</p><p>Herta's assignment for McLaren renews the question of when we will see the next American driver in F1. The last American was current IndyCar driver Alexander Rossi, who entered five races in 2015, and the last full-time F1 driver from the States was the aptly named Scott Speed in 2006 and 2007.</p><p>F1's popularity in the US has experienced a sudden surge, thanks, in part, to the popularity of the Netflix hit series "Drive to Survive," the success of the US Grand Prix in Austin and the Miami Grand Prix, and the excitement over the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix in 2023. But some wonder if that growth can be sustained without an American star on the grid.</p><h2>Current F1 drivers say seats should be filled based on talent alone</h2><p>While F1's popularity in the US could be boosted with the addition of an American driver, the downside is the risk of diluting the product on the track. </p><p>Before the Miami Grand Prix, Insider asked Mercedes driver <keyword id="12373261" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="george-russell" source="Orion">George Russell</keyword> about the prospects of adding an American to the ranks.</p><p>"I think Formula One is the pinnacle of the sport, and we shouldn't have a driver on the grid just because of their nationality," Russell said. "We should have the best drivers earning their right to be here and proving themselves when they're here. "When you've got the best, often the show becomes even better."</p><p>While other drivers agreed with Russell's sentiment, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton says it is time to start finding American talent.</p><p>"Here in the States, it's the NFL, it's NBA, it's NASCAR, IndyCar, and I mean, in my 16 years of coming over here, it's been such a slow build, trying to bring awareness of the sport," <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2022/05/16/f1-george-russell-disagrees-with-lewis-hamilton-on-need-for-american-drivers-to-join-formula-1-16650982/">Hamilton said before the Miami GP</a>. "Maybe now's the time to start focusing on how we can include more people here because it's such a diverse country. I'm sure there are some amazing drivers here somewhere, as they've got so many great sporting talents. So, it'd be a good mission for us to find the next one."</p><h2>Herta calls F1 a "serious ambition" of his, but he still needs a Super License and a seat</h2><p><a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/maxs-miami-masterclass-ferraris-fightback-the-next-us/id1510367515?i=1000560202275">During a recent appearance on the F1 Nation podcast</a>, Herta talked about his desire to make the jump to F1.</p><p>"It is a serious ambition of mine," Herta said, adding later: "I want to be in F1 at some point in my career, and obviously, time is essential to that, so it's going to be very important to do a good job in the test and hopefully open some doors. As far as I'm concerned right now, I don't have a race seat. I don't have a contract for one, so anything can happen. I'm hoping that if this doesn't lead to anything with McLaren, it gets people talking a little bit. He would need 12 points this year between his IndyCar performance (he received eight points for his fifth-place finish in 2021 and 20 for his third-place finish in 2020) and F1 testing (<a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/motor/2022/03/12/colton-herta-lands-mclaren-f-1-testing-role-andretti-waits-fia/7016532001/?utm_source=pocket_mylist">according to Nathan Brown of Indy Star</a>, Herta's testing with McLaren will earn him points, although it is unclear how many). </p><p>Herta also needs a seat.</p><p>Herta has also been linked to <a href="https://www.autoweek.com/racing/formula-1/a38160990/michael-andretti-says-failed-f1-bid-had-nothing-to-do-with-finances/">Michael Andretti's failed bid to purchase the Alfa Romeo team</a> and his recent hopes of buying an F1 expansion team. However, the easier path might be with McLaren, with Andretti's chances of securing a team still up in the air.</p><p>McLaren is already a popular team in the US, and Daniel Ricciardo's contract is up after the 2023 season. <p class="preview"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/562e73debd86ef15008c4b4e-800-533/hamilton f1 championship 2015.jpg" alt="Hamilton F1 Championship 2015" data-mce-source="Motorsport" /><p class="source"><span>Motorsport</span></p><p class="caption">The winner, leaping.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Lewis Hamilton won his third F1 World Championship thanks to a late-race mistake by Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg that decided the winner of the United States Grand Prix.</p><p>In a dramatic race of changing fortunes, it looked like Hamilton had lost his chance to claim the title in Austin as Rosberg had been able to pit under a Virtual Safety Car, while the Brit stayed out.</p><p>But another Safety Car, after Daniil Kvyat crashed out, allowed Hamilton to get back onto the German's tail.</p><p>With just under 10 laps to go, Rosberg lit up his rear tyres exiting Turn 16 and slid off the track through Turn 17, allowing Hamilton to cruise past and take his 43<sup>rd</sup> grand prix victory and third world crown.</p><p>"This is the greatest moment of my life," said Hamilton on his in-lap.</p><p>Rosberg finished second, ahead of <span data-bubbles="team" data-value="ferrari"><a href="http://motorsport.com/team/ferrari" target="_blank">Ferrari's</a></span> Sebastian Vettel, the only other man who could deny Hamilton the title today. </p><p>Vettel could have kept the championship alive had he passed Rosberg for second, but failed to do this by half a second.</p><h3>Story of the race</h3><p>From pole position on a damp track, with the entire field on intermediate tyres, Rosberg didn't make a great start and Hamilton quickly drew alongside him. They went into Turn 1 side by side, with Hamilton shoving Rosberg off the track as he claimed the lead, briefly touching wheels, dropping Nico down to fifth.</p><p>The <span data-bubbles="team" data-value="red-bull-racing"><a href="http://motorsport.com/team/red-bull-racing" target="_blank">Red Bulls</a></span> ran through Turn 2 side by side, with Kvyat establishing himself ahead of Daniel Ricciardo. Rosberg got straight back past Sergio Perez's fast-starting Force India to claim fourth, but struggled to make inroads into Ricciardo.</p><p>Hamilton led the opening lap by 1.4s from Kvyat, Ricciardo, Rosberg and Perez.</p><p>Kvyat closed right up to Hamilton's tail over the next three laps, and passed him at Turn 1, but overshot the corner.</p><p>Vettel had moved up to ninth on the opening lap, after starting 13<sup>th</sup> due to a 10-place grid penalty for his upgraded <span data-bubbles="team" data-value="ferrari"><a href="http://motorsport.com/team/ferrari" target="_blank">Ferrari</a></span> engine, and picked his way through to sixth by lap five.</p><p>The Virtual Safety Car was then required to clear the track of debris after multiple first-corner collisions.</p><p>At the restart, after Hamilton had backed the top four together, Rosberg jumped Ricciardo for third through the Esses. "How the [bleep] did Nico pass us?" Ricciardo asked as Rosberg then passed Kvyat for second at Turn 12.</p><p>Rosberg had great pace at this stage, and closed up to Hamilton, with the <span data-bubbles="team" data-value="red-bull-racing"><a href="http://motorsport.com/team/red-bull-racing" target="_blank">Red Bull</a></span> duo staying in touch. But Hamilton pulled away again as the inters began to get towards the end of their life, with Rosberg coming under attack again from Kvyat on lap 11.</p><p>Kvyat divebombed Rosberg at Turn 20, but ran wide and allowed Ricciardo up to third. But Rosberg then ran wide at Turn 1 on the next lap, so Ricciardo was catapulted to second to chase down leader Hamilton.</p><p>Ricciardo attacked Hamilton at Turn 1 on lap 15, and made a pass for the lead stick at Turn 18 after Lewis went wide, the Aussie able to slice inside him through the left-hand sweepers.</p><p>Rosberg then attacked Hamilton, as Ricciardo extended his lead to 2.6s.</p><p>Rosberg took second from Hamilton on lap 18, as Lewis was told to pit. Kvyat almost got past Hamilton too, before he dived into the pits and rejoined on soft-compound slicks.</p><p>Ricciardo pitted from the lead on lap 19, with Rosberg, Kvyat, Perez and Vettel following suit. Hamilton locked up and went straight on at Turn 1 as Rosberg and Kvyat rejoined ahead of him.</p><p>Ricciardo lost 5s in the middle sector of his outlap after going wide at Turn 7, but led by 3.1s from Rosberg, Kvyat and Hamilton.</p><p>However, te German slashed 2s from Ricciardo's lead on lap 21, as Hamilton attacked Kvyat - with fifth-placed Vettel closing on all of them.</p><p>Rosberg passed Ricciardo for the lead with ease, with Hamilton likewise DRS-ing past Kvyat.</p><p>Rosberg was so rapid at this point he was extended his lead by almost 3s per lap, while Hamilton's pace was restricted by Ricciardo ahead of him. He passed him at Turn 12 on lap 26, but was over 10s in arrears behind leader Rosberg.</p><p>Vettel passed Kvyat for fourth on lap 24 at Turn 1.</p><p>The Safety Car was then required to retrieve Marcus Ericsson's stranded Sauber, Vettel taking the opportunity to pit. Vettel's right-front change was slow, and he rejoined on the medium-compound tyre.</p><h3>The fascinating middle phase</h3><p>The race restarted in the order: Rosberg, Hamilton, Ricciardo and Kvyat, with Vettel running fifth on a brand-new set of mediums knowing that those ahead would have to stop again. Verstappen, in sixth, opted for a fresh set of softs during his Safety Car pitstop.</p><p>At the restart, Kvyat locked up and ran wide at Turn 1, allowing Vettel up to fourth.</p><p>Rosberg, meanwhile, scampered away up front, as Vettel grabbed third from Ricciardo when the Australian ran wide at Turn 12, only for Ricciardo to fight back past him at Turn 13 after Vettel himself made a mistake.</p><p>Vettel made the move stick through Turn 1/2 on the next lap, after Ricciardo ran wide. Verstappen passed Kvyat, who went off at Turn 12 and allowed Hulkenberg (who had pitted for fresh mediums under the Safety Car) passed him to take sixth.</p><p>Verstappen then passed Ricciardo for fourth, before Hulkenberg clanged into the side of Ricciardo on lap 36, taking himself out of the race.</p><p>Out front, Hamilton began to close the gap on Rosberg with 20 laps to go, and was in DRS zone by lap 35. Vettel was 8s in arrears at this point, under no threat from Verstappen.</p><p>Kvyat DRS-ed past Ricciardo just before another VSC was required to retrieve Hulkenberg's stranded Force India.</p><p>That allowed Rosberg to pit, ruining Vettel's best hope of victory, with Hamilton staying out - any hope of him sealing the title today seeming lost. Kvyat and Ricciardo pitted, <span data-bubbles="team" data-value="red-bull-racing"><a href="http://motorsport.com/team/red-bull-racing" target="_blank">Red Bull</a></span> stacking their cars briefly.</p><p>Hamilton restarted without getting the chance to pit under the VSC, leading the race by 4.9s over Vettel. Verstappen was third, ahead of Rosberg, with Button up to fifth, ahead of Perez.</p><p>Rosberg outdragged Verstappen on the back straight to take third on lap 40, and was in striking distance of Vettel. He took 2.4s out of Vettel on lap 41 alone, and DRS-ed past him on the backstraight on the following tour.</p><p>Button and Alonso were up to fifth and sixth, but the race was interrupted again as Kvyat crashed out exiting the penultimate corner. "Sorry, guys," he said, shaken but unhurt.</p><p>Hamilton got his crucial 'free' pitstop as the Safety Car was called upon again, rejoining behind Rosberg but ahead of Verstappen.</p><p>Vettel also pitted for softs, only losing a place to Verstappen.</p><h3>The crucial charge to the finish</h3><p>The race restarted again with 10 laps to go with Rosberg leading Hamilton by 1.1s, ahead of Verstappen and Vettel. <span data-bubbles="team" data-value="mclaren"><a href="http://motorsport.com/team/mclaren" target="_blank">McLaren's</a></span> Jenson Button pitted from fifth, promoting Alonso, Perez and the damaged car of Ricciardo.</p><p>Vettel outpowered Verstappen on the backstraight for third, while Rosberg extended his lead to 1.6s over the first post-restart lap, with the <span data-bubbles="team" data-value="ferrari"><a href="http://motorsport.com/team/ferrari" target="_blank">Ferrari</a></span> of Vettel already 3s back.</p><p>But then Rosberg made his crucial mistake and went off at Turn 17, handing the lead to Hamilton on lap 47 - and effectively the championship too. "I don't know what happened," he rued post-race.</p><p>The Briton took a 2.6s lead, which Rosberg was unable to do anything about as he slipped back towards third-placed Vettel.</p><p>Vettel got DRS on Rosberg on the last lap, locking up and sliding wide at Turn 1. He finished right behind his fellow German at the finish.</p><p>Verstappen finished a distant fourth, ahead of Perez.
