49ers' Aldon Smith arrested on charges of hit and run, DUI, and vandalism

<p>His locker has been cleared out, and he won't play in Thursday's game against the St. Louis Rams.</p>
<p>Smith <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aldon-smith-arrested-dui-2013-9">was arrested and charged with DUI on Friday morning</a>, an hour before practice, after driving into a tree. Marijuana was also allegedly found in his car, according to police.</p>
<p>It's his third high-profile legal incident since he was drafted in 2011.</p>
<p>He still played in <a href="http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=330922025">San Francisco's 27-7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts</a> yesterday. But now he's leaving the team to seek help.</p>
<p>49ers CEO Jed York explained the timing of the decision (<a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/22/jed-york-allowing-smith-to-play-was-best-decision-for-him/">via PFT</a>):</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"Our opinion was, sitting somebody down and paying them to sit down when they're going to seek treatment in the future, that didn't seem like an appropriate punishment. I know it might not sound reasonable, but for Aldon to be able to face the media, face his teammates, and take full responsibility for what he's doing, we felt that was the best situation for Aldon himself, and for the team, and ultimately the community at large. And I realize people might not agree with that decision, but that was the decision that we felt was best."</span></p>
<p>Smith himself also <a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/22/aldon-smith-im-sorry-and-it-wont-happen-again/">offered an apology</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span><span>"First off, I wanted to apologize to the team, the organization, my family, everybody I let down. I also want to let it be known that this is a problem and something I will get fixed. I'll do everything in my power to make sure this never happens again. I also want everyone to know, once again, I'm sorry and like I said, this won't happen again."</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>We aren't in a position to say when someone should or shouldn't enter rehab. </span></span></p>
<p><span><span>But the team certainly could have handled this better, because right now it looks like they decided to delay his treatment/indefinite leave of absence until after a big game against the Colts.</span></span></p>

49ers Player Aldon Smith Is Going To Rehab, Will Be Out Indefinitely After Playing On Sunday

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5796318488e4a7fd018ba802-1185/aldon smith.jpg" alt="Aldon Smith" data-mce-source="Kirby Lee/USA TODAY Sports" /><p class="source"><span>Kirby Lee/USA TODAY Sports</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Oakland Raiders defensive end Aldon Smith is already in trouble, currently serving a year-long suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy, and now he may have a bigger problem.</p><p><a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/17138859/nfl-investigate-aldon-smith-oakland-raiders-wake-online-video" target="_blank">According to ESPN</a>, the NFL is investigating a video posted online over the weekend that appears to show an unidentified male and female smoking a hand-rolled cigarette.</p><p>According to the report, the Periscope account used to post the video has been used by Smith in the past, leading to speculation that the unidentified male in the video could be him.</p><p><span>In the video, the unidentified female says that the male is being "hella stupid" and that he "shouldn't even be posting that."</span></p><p>The video ends with the male saying "They don't know it's me. It's not like I put 'Aldon Smith'."</p><p>The video is listed under the handle, "<span>ravenga."</span></p><p>This is a serious problem because Smith is looking to apply for reinstatement into the NFL. </p><p>According to <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/17138859/nfl-investigate-aldon-smith-oakland-raiders-wake-online-video">ESPN</a>, "<span>Smith currently is serving a yearlong suspension that was handed down in November when he violated the NFL's substance abuse policy. He has been <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_28601423/heres-list-49ers-star-aldon-smith-5-arrests">arrested five&#xa0;times since 2012</a>, three of which were related to drinking and driving.</p><p>Tomsula got&#xa0;visibly choked up while speaking about Smith, and then talked more generally about the need to held anyone who may be struggling in life. It was his&#xa0;<a href="http://www.si.com/nfl/2015/08/07/san-francisco-49ers-aldon-smith-arrested">fifth arrest in three years</a>.<p>The Smith situation&#xa0;is the latest hit&#xa0;in what has been&#xa0;a disastrous eight months for the team.</p><p>Heading into the 2014 season, the 49ers had reached the NFC Championship Game the past three seasons, including a 2012 Super Bowl appearance.</p><p>The season was a profound disappointment. The team&#xa0;ended up losing&#xa0;four of their last five games, and finished the year with a 8-8 record. Their starting quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, went&#xa0;from <a href="http://www.denverpost.com/ci_22495094/san-francisco-49ers-quarterback-colin-kaepernick-sudden-star">being called a star</a>&#xa0;to hearing <a href="http://www.si.com/nfl/2015/03/09/colin-kaepernick-trade-49ers-trent-baalke">rumors he would soon be traded</a>. Their brash head coach, Jim Harbaugh, who almost led them to a Super Bowl in his second season, <a href="http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/49ers-Jim-Harbaugh-Mutually-Agree-to-Part-Ways/7a9cb3ac-bd21-4eb0-827e-527f0b78a529">was&#xa0;essentially fired</a>&#xa0;just hours after the 49ers regular season finale (the press release stated they <a href="http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/49ers-Jim-Harbaugh-Mutually-Agree-to-Part-Ways/7a9cb3ac-bd21-4eb0-827e-527f0b78a529">"mutually agreed to part ways,"</a>&#xa0;but Harbaugh would later confirm<a href="http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/02/san-francisco-49ers-jim-harbaugh-jed-york-mutual-decision"> he did not want to leave the team</a>).</p><p>And that was just the beginning.</p><p>The 49ers are currently in the midst of the one of the most turbulent off-seasons in recent memory. As if the Harbaugh loss wasn't enough, they had an unusual number of players retire in their primes and lost many others in free agency.&#xa0;</p><p>In June, SI's Peter King noted&#xa0;that the 49ers lost <a href="http://mmqb.si.com/2015/06/08/russell-wilson-seattle-seahawks-contract-nfl/2">14 of the 25 most important members of the organization after Harbaugh was fired in December.</a>&#xa0;That number is now up to 15 with Smith's release, and <a href="https://twitter.com/billbarnwell/status/629724060017143808">only two members of the defense</a> that started the 2013 Super Bowl are still on the team. How the San Francisco 49ers completely collapsed in a nightmare 8 months

He finished second in the league in sacks, and was <a href="http://www.49ers.com/news/article-2/Aldon-Smith-Named-49ers-MVP/cb95a008-f649-44f2-a76e-e33ba12e1215">named team MVP by the 49ers yesterday</a>.</p>
<p>But six weeks ago, Smith fell into a horrible sack drought, and he hasn't brought a quarterback to the ground since.</p>
<p>Smith explained his lack of production to the media yesterday, saying <a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/28/aldon-smith-blames-sack-drought-on-double-and-triple-teams/">it's all about opposing offenses allocating more resources toward blocking him</a>. From PFT:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">“A lot more guys coming to block me. I’m getting double-teamed a lot, triple-teamed at times, and then the quarterbacks are getting the ball out fast. Another thing that’s really cool about that is if I’m not making a play, a lot of times I’m getting double-teamed a sack comes from somebody else. I might not get it, but at the end of the day the stats still say it’s a sack.”</p>
<p>The drought started when Smith's partner in crime — defensive end Justin Smith — went down with an injury against the Patriots. A lot of people said that Justin Smith's absence was the sole reason Aldon was struggling.</p>
<p>But the drought has continued since Justin came back against Green Bay, so clearly there's something else going on.</p>
<p>Justin Smith says Aldon's drought is more <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000131679/article/justin-smith-explains-aldon-smiths-sack-drought">a function of the good quarterbacks the 49ers have been playing</a>. Here's what he told <keyword id="103436" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NFL">NFL</keyword>.com:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"That's just a straight statistic, but what you don't always see is teams play us a little bit differently. Quarterbacks drift on us a little bit more, and we've been playing some really good quarterbacks in (Matt) Ryan and (Aaron) Rodgers. They're timing guys. They're getting rid of the ball quick. They do their job really well, as well, so it makes our job a little bit tougher."</p>
<p>Getting pressure on Ravens QB Joe Flacco is going to be huge key on Sunday. Flacco is quietly one of the best deep-ball throwers in the league, and if he has time to let his receivers get down field, he can make some big plays.</p>
<p>Smith is right to say the lack of sacks doesn't matter as long as he is getting pressure. But as we saw when San Francisco got torched by Atlanta's Matt Ryan in the first half of the NFL title game, the 49ers become incredibly vulnerable when they are unable to take a QB out of his comfort zone.</p>

49ers Star Tries To Explain Why He Suddenly Stopped Getting Sacks Right Before The Super Bowl

<p>The alleged incident occurred around 7 a.m. this morning, <a href="http://www.csnbayarea.com/49ers/49ers-lb-aldon-smith-arrested">police told Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area</a>. He allegedly failed a breathalyzer test after the accident.</p>
<p>This is Smith's third high-profile incident in the last two years. He was <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/crime-courts/ci_24015642/49ers-aldon-smith-faces-possible-criminal-charges">stabbed after a melee erupted at a party at his house last year</a>, and two other people were also shot.</p>
<p>In January of 2012, <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7513852/san-francisco-49ers-aldon-smith-arrested-charged-dui">he was arrested and charged with a DUI in Miami</a>.</p>
<p>Smith is 23-years old. He was the seventh overall pick in the 2011 Draft, and has turned into one of the best pass rushers in the <keyword id="103436" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="NFL">NFL</keyword>.</p>
<p>The 49ers play the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.</p>

San Francisco 49ers Player Arrested On Suspicion Of DUI At 7 A.M. Two Days Before A Game

<p>This is a still a good team with a great defense and a solid running game, but they are far from hitting on all cylinders going into the playoffs.</p>
<p>Here's what's going wrong:</p>
<p><strong>David Akers is a mess.</strong> Field goals matter to the 49ers more than any other team in the playoffs. They are built on defense and running the ball, meaning they rely on field goals for points more than everyone else. <strong>Akers has led the league in field goal attempts in each of the last two seasons — if he isn't on, the team struggles to put points on the board.</strong></p>
<p>Akers has missed seven kicks in the last six weeks. He has made just two kicks of 40 yards or longer in the second half of the season. The team says <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/49ers/ci_22340542/san-francisco-49ers-jim-harbaugh-praises-kicker-david">he has responded to well getting challenged by back-up Billy Cundiff</a>, but it's a huge, huge question mark.</p>
<p><strong>Frank Gore has hit a wall.</strong> The most important player on the 49ers offense is leaking oil. <a href="http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8831246/bill-barnwell-saturday-slate-nfl-playoff-games">From Grantland's Bill Barnwell</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Gore was averaging 5.8 yards per carry through the first seven games and finished with 4.7 yards per carry, so you know he dropped off, but the real collapse came once backup Kendall Hunter went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 11. Over the final five games of the year, Gore averaged just 3.6 yards per rushing attempt. His workload stayed exactly the same, but his production just fell off a cliff."</p>
<p><strong>Passer rushing Aldon Smith hasn't been able to rush the passer.</strong> Barnwell points out that <a href="http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8831246/bill-barnwell-saturday-slate-nfl-playoff-games">Smith hasn't recorded a sack since Week 15</a> (he was on a 1.3 sack per game pace before that), and that he hasn't even so much as <em>touched</em> a QB in the last two weeks.</p>
<p><strong>Pro Bowler Justin Smith is hurt.</strong> He's going to play, but who knows how effective he will be. There are reports that his triceps is still partially torn, prompting <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000124532/article/rg3-justin-smith-show-problems-with-medical-calls">some to question the wisdom of playing him at all</a>. Smith eats up blockers and allows the rest of the great playmakers on the 49er D to flourish. He's a big loss if he's less than 100%.</p>
<p>All of this is before you get to the fact that it'll be Colin Kaepernick's first playoff game ever, against <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/packers-turnover-rate-2012-9">a team that will eat you alive if you turn the ball over</a>.</p>

There Are Warning Signs All Over The Place For The San Francisco 49ers Right Now

<p>Even though Colin Kaepernick is catching flack for his first-half jitters in the <keyword id="101238" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Super-Bowl">Super Bowl</keyword>, the 49ers defense — the secondary specifically — was the real reason why they lost last night.</p>
<p>Joe Flacco completed 22 of 33 passes for 287 yards and 3 TDs. He didn't just dink and dunk San Francisco to death, he supplemented his short passes with a handful of back-breaking deep balls. He was getting anything he wanted.</p>
<p>We probably should have seen it coming.</p>
<p>The 49ers' secondary got sliced up by Matt Ryan in the first half of the NFC title game, and gave up 31 points to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round.</p>
<p>ESPN Stats &amp; Info had <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/statsinfo/post/_/id/61395/flacco-dominant-down field-against-niners">an eye-popping stat about the collapse of the 49ers' secondary this morning</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Including the Super Bowl, the 49ers allowed five touchdowns and a 67.5 completion percentage on passes more than 10 yards down field in the postseason. In the regular season, the 49ers allowed only three touchdowns (fewest) on those throws and a 38.7 completion percentage (third best)."</p>
<p>So the 49ers' secondary was basically twice as bad in the playoffs as they were in the regular season.</p>
<p>Chris Culliver — the 49ers cornerback who made anti-gay statements during Super Bowl week — <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chris-culliver-struggles-in-super-bowl-2013-2">was one of the main culprits</a>. He got beat by Anquan Boldin a bunch, and let Jacoby Jones run right by him on this TD pass:</p>

<p>The 49ers' defense gave up 29.7 points per game in the playoffs, compared to 17.1 points per game in the regular season.</p>
<p>The 49ers' offense scored 34.7 points per game in the playoffs, compared to 24.8 points per game in the regular season.</p>
<p>The offense got better, but the defense fell apart, and that's why they lost.</p>
<p><strong>But how does a secondary suddenly fall apart?</strong></p>
<p>There's no definitive answers. They didn't have any significant injuries, and you typically don't see an entire unit of a team suddenly go into a slump at once.</p>
<p>One theory is that the 49ers' pass rush is actually to blame. Aldon Smith — the league's second-leading pass rusher — didn't have a single sack in the playoffs, and defensive lineman Justin Smith has been playing hurt.</p>
<p>But the pass rush actually wasn't that bad last night. They sacked Flacco only twice, but they knocked him down on seven of his 33 pass attempts. That's not a terrible percentage.</p>
<p>So there isn't a definitive reason why the 49ers suddenly couldn't cover anyone. All we know is that was the real reason they lost last night.</p>

The 49ers Lost Because Their Pass Defense Mysteriously Collapsed In The Playoffs

<p>That's nearly identical to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nfl-players-arrested-2013-super-bowl-2013-6">27 players who were arrested in the 2013 NFL offseason</a>.</p>
<p>Ray Rice was the first player to get arrested, but he wasn't the last.</p>
<p>Using <a href="http://www.utsandiego.com/nfl/arrests-database/?appSession=964121720828747&amp;RecordID=&amp;PageID=2&amp;PrevPageID=&amp;cpipage=1&amp;CPISortType=&amp;CPIorderBy=">the Union-Tribune's invaluable NFL arrest database</a> and other published reports, we compiled the list of 28 players who were arrested this offseason. In total, there were three domestic violence arrests, six DWI/DUI arrests, and a host of drug-related arrests. </p>
<p>There were also arrests on charges of making a false bomb threat, soliciting a prostitute, and possessing brass knuckles.</p>
<p>Most of the cases are unresolved, and many of the charges have already been dropped.</p>
