<br /> The oil painting, "The <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Women">Women</keyword> of <keyword id="147983" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="ALGIERS">Algiers</keyword> (Version 0)," sold for $179,365,000 after more than 11 minutes of furious bidding from telephone buyers at a packed auction room at <keyword id="56712" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Christies">Christie's</keyword>. <br />

Applause erupted when the sale was finalized in an atmosphere of feverish excitement, accompanied by laughter and jokes, fetching way over its pre-sale estimate of $140 million.<br />
<br /> The previous world record for a painting sold at auction was $142.4 million, set for British <keyword id="6448302" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Painter">painter</keyword> <keyword id="367925" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Francis-Bacon">Francis Bacon</keyword>'s "Three Studies of <keyword id="194194" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lucian-Freud">Lucian Freud</keyword>," which was sold by Christie's in New York in 2013. <br />
<br /> The 1955 painting by <keyword id="105893" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pablo-Picasso">Pablo Picasso</keyword> is one of the last major paintings by the Spanish master still in private hands. He painted several versions until he settled on the nearly four-by-five-foot (121-by-152-centimeter) canvas.<br />
<br /> A rival highlight of the evening sale is a bronze statue by <keyword id="105892" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Alberto-Giacometti">Alberto Giacometti</keyword> called "Man Pointing," estimated to be worth $130 million, which has also been tipped as a potential record breaker. <br />

"Those two works can set a world record," Loic Gouzer, senior vice president of Christie's, said ahead of Monday's auction. <br />
<br /> "You don't have another chance to get them." Swiss sculptor Giacometti already holds <keyword id="818966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="the-record">the record</keyword> for the most expensive sculpture sold at auction with his "Walking Man I" fetching $104.3 million in London in 2010.<br />
<br />
Christie's is offering a total of 35 lots spanning more than a century from 1902 to 2011, and expected to score in excess of $500 million at its swanky New York premises at Rockefeller Plaza.<br />
<br />
Other highlights are Picasso's "Buste de femme" oil painting, valued at $55 million, a painting from Claude Monet's "The House of Parliament" series, valued at $35 to $45 million, and Mark Rothko's 1958 "No 36, Black Stripe," with an estimated value of $30-$50 million.<br />
<br />
Exponential growth in the art market, particularly for modern and contemporary works, is attributed to a growing number of private investors around the world and burgeoning interest in Asia and the Gulf.<br />
<br /> The proceeds from public art auctions rose 26 percent from $12.05 billion in 2013 to $15.2 billion in 2014, and grew 422 percent between 2000 and 2014, according to <keyword id="913814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Artprice">Artprice</keyword>, a leader in art market information.<br />
<br /> Artprice CEO <keyword id="2743769" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Thierry-Ehrmann">Thierry Ehrmann</keyword> told AFP that interest would be particularly strong for the Giacometti statue, which it believed could go as high as $175 to $200 million and eclipse the Picasso.<br />
<br />
"This will be the sale of the century," said Ehrmann. "It's a tipping point in the history of art."<br />
<br />
There are only six casts in the world of "Man Pointing," which shows a wiry, nearly six-foot (1.8-meter) man holding up one hand and pointing with the other.<br />
<br /> New York's spring auction season began last week at <keyword id="165441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sothebys">Sotheby's</keyword>, which sold a Vincent <keyword id="89453" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Van-Gogh">van Gogh</keyword> painting for more than $66 million, the most paid for a work by the Dutch post-impressionist since 1998.<br />
<br /> Van Gogh's "Les Alyscamps," which depicts a stand of autumnal trees, had been expected to go for around $40 million but was finally snapped up by an Asian <keyword id="6371177" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Collector">collector</keyword> after an intense bidding war.<br />
<br />
The sales continue on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Artprice says the art market offers yields of 10 to 15 percent per year for works valued at over $100,000.<br />
<br />
But even if auction records are broken Monday, the Picasso and Giacometti are unlikely to eclipse the $300 million reportedly paid privately by Qatar for Paul Gauguin's 1892 painting "When Will You Marry?" in February.<br />


This painting's the most expensive art sold ever, for a whopping $179 million

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A chandelier purchased at an antique store for just $300 has sold at auction for $3.5 million.</li><li>The auction was held at Christie's in London on February 28. </li></ul><p>A chandelier purchased at an antique store for just £250 ($300) has sold at auction for £2.9 million ($3.5 million).</p><p>Artist John Craxton stumbled across the Alberto Giacometti chandelier in a London antique store in the 1960s, Christie's auction house <a href="https://www.christies.com/features/giacometti-chandelier-for-peter-watson-12650-3.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a>. Craxton couldn't believe his eyes — or his luck, according to Christie's. Leaving the shop, he banged his head on a low-hanging chandelier he recognized instantly.</p><p>The shop listed its maker as "unknown." However, Craxton knew full well that the chandelier had been made by the renowned Swiss sculptor Giacometti a couple of decades earlier. He promptly paid £250, all of his savings, for the piece and kept it for the rest of his life until he passed away in 2009. </p><p>In an <a href="https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-6414661?ldp_breadcrumb=back&amp;intObjectID=6414661&amp;from=salessummary&amp;lid=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">auction</a> of Craxton's art collection held on February 28, the bronze chandelier, made in 1946, outsold its top estimate of £2.5 million ($3 million). </p><p>The chandelier had been made for the offices of a contemporary art magazine. When it closed down, the chandelier was put in storage. It is unknown how it ended up in the antique shop in London, said Christie's.</p><p>Giacometti, who spent his life in Switzerland and died in 1966, was best known for his sculpture work, with his <a href="https://www.christies.com/lot/lot-5895983" target="_blank" rel="noopener">L'homme au doigt selling at Christie's for $141,285,000 in 2015.</a></p><p>His chandelier, however, was in line with his sculpture work, with Michelle McMullan, Christie's senior specialist, and head of the 20th-century evening sales, telling <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/style/article/alberto-giacometti-chandelier-auction-intl-scli/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> the work is a "sculpture in its own right."</p><p>She described the chandelier as a culmination of Giacometti's works and styles, yet also a totally unique piece of work from the artist. </p><p>"I just think it's a great combination of Giacometti's sculptural language, combined with the refinement of his works in design," she told the news site.</p>

In 2013, Cohen spent $155 million on Picasso painting, "Le Reve," buying it from casino giant Steve Wynn. </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">The avid art collector even waited six years as Wynn repaired the painting after putting his elbow through the canvas, and even as the price increased $139 million in 2006 to $155 in 2013 - likely due to restoration.</span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">Cohen, who runs Point72 Asset Management (formerly SAC Capital), previously purchased another one of Giacometti's sculptures, named "The Chariot," for $101 million at Sotheby's.</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p class="p1"><span class="s1">"Man Pointing" is one of 6 casts made by the artist. <p>This is hardly a surprise: Cohen is well-known for paying nine figures for coveted pieces of art for his collection. Cohen bought Picasso's "La Rêve" from casino magnate Steve Wynn in a private sale (later confirmed by his art adviser, Sandy Heller) <a href="http://blogs.artinfo.com/artintheair/2013/04/07/steve-cohen-would-like-you-to-know-exactly-when-he-impulse-bought-picassos-la-reve/">back in 2012</a> for $155 million. He's <span>one of the only collectors to rival the </span><span></span><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/23/arts/design/qatar-uses-its-riches-to-buy-art-treasures.html?pagewanted=all">Al-Thani family of Qatar</a><span> in the super-high-priced art space.</span></p>
<p>But while this latest big purchase ranks among the highest prices ever paid (publicly) for a work of art, it actually seems like Cohen got a deal on it.</p>
<p>Sotheby's estimate (which was only given out on request) was "in excess of $100 million." While the final sale price ticked up beyond that, estimates are of the hammer price, which is the amount that gets called out in the sale room and is the final price less the auction house's fee. In this case, bidding never went over $90 million, largely because there was only one bidder beyond the guarantor (who promises the auction house to buy the work if bidding doesn't reach a certain price).</p>
<p>Further, Sotheby's was <a href="http://observer.com/2014/11/the-auctions/">really looking for</a> a new record for Giacometti sculpture, something above the $104.3 million that Lily Safra paid for a different work in 2010. </p>
<p>Thus, in the end, the sale was a disappointment, and a relatively good $100 million deal for Cohen.</p>

It's Hardly A Surprise Who Paid $101 Million For This 'Chariot'

<p> This isn't a trick question! The first image is Giacometti's "Stèle III," which sold for $9.9 million at Christie's on Wednesday night. The second, "Chariot," brought in just over $100 million at Sotheby's the night before.</p>
<p>But it's hard to say what makes one worth ten times the other. The basic answer is that these works are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them. On Tuesday, a buyer was willing to pay $100 million for Chariot, making it, on that day, worth $100 million.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, someone was willing to pay $10 million for Stèle - and that was actually more than the auction house expected to get for it. The hammer price, which is what the seller gets after the auction house's fees, was $8.7 million, quite a bit above the auction house's <span>$4.5-6.5 million pre-sale estimate</span>. It probably got a bump from the big sale of Chariot the day before.</p>
<p>Going back to that: Chariot is the more famous work. It is the better work. But what motivates someone to pay $90 million more for it? Well part of it is being able to show people who come to your house that you have the $100 million piece of art. Here's <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/business/currency/the-hundred-million-dollar-giacometti">Felix Salmon</a>, with an explanation I can't top:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The art market has become a world of conspicuous consumption-a hundred-million-dollar sculpture is simply the most ultra-luxe end of the luxury market, a gilded toy to one-up the guest who arrives in a Bugatti. Art, at these levels (or even at a tenth of these levels) is instantly recognizable: you see a Giacometti and you know, in a fraction of a second, that it's a Giacometti. It's branded. And if you know anything about the high-end auction market, then when you see "Chariot" you'll know that it's "Chariot," the hundred-million-dollar sculpture. </p>
<p>It's worth reading Salmon's full post, as he goes through why the $100 million that Sotheby's got for the sculpture was actually quite a disappointment, and how the auction house may have even lost money on this huge sale.</p>
<p>The thing is, these iconic works are really just trophies. They are an ad for the fact that their owners can afford to pay whatever gigantic sum gets splashed across the headlines. <strong>The art market at the highest level is nothing more than making sport out of consumption.</strong></p>
<p>There are two ways to think about this: A common reaction is that it's obscene that $100 million is going to change hands over a single, relatively small object. You could probably buy a small island for less money.</p>
<p>At the same time, if you have $100 million to throw around, there are worse ways to spend it. You can't stop rich people from spending their money how they like. Even the low end of the evening auctions is out of reach of the 99.9%. These artists, particularly in the Impressionist and modern auctions, are mostly dead. There are very few people for whom this purchase actually means something material.</p>
<p>Not all of the art market is a game. But this is. So have fun talking about it and thank god you don't owe anyone $100 million this week! </p>

This Is What Makes A Sculpture Worth $100 Million

The pig even had its own room in the mansion.</p><p>Romeo apparently grew too big and they had to find him a new home. According to the New York Post, he's been sent to live on a vegan farm in Florida (phew!). </p><p>Our source claimed that Romeo had a tattoo on his face and that he appeared to be a walking piece of art. That's not entirely clear.</p><p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Cohen is a huge art collector, though.
