Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai and other automakers report a decline in sales in July 2024

<ul><li>The central government has extended the 'Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 until September 30.</li><li>A statement by the ministry on Friday added that the total outlay of the scheme has been enhanced to ₹778 crore.</li><li>It was originally set to run from April 1 to July 31, 2024, with a total outlay of ₹500 crores.</li></ul> In a boost to electric vehicle (EV) sellers and those looking to purchase EVs, the central government on Friday extended the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 (<keyword id="20952501" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="emps-2024" source="Orion">EMPS 2024</keyword>). The <keyword id="48070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emps" source="Orion">EMPS</keyword> 2024, which was launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries on March 13, 2024, through a gazette notification was originally set to run from April 1st to July 31st, 2024. The scheme has now received a two-month extension and will continue till September 30, 2024. In addition to this extension, the government has also increased the outlay for this scheme from the initial ₹500 crore to ₹778 crore. <h2>What is EMPS 2024?</h2>The EMPS scheme replaced the earlier Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles in India (FAME) scheme. The EMPS scheme was a stop-gap measure after the end of the FAME-II scheme and was expected to be replaced by a new FAME-III scheme in the Budget 2024-25. However, as there was no consensus on a new scheme among the stakeholders, the government has decided to temporarily extend EMPS 2024 while a new FAME scheme is announced. Under the EMPS 2024 scheme, customers can avail a subsidy of up to ₹10,000 for two-wheeler EVs, up to ₹25,000 for a small three-wheeler EV, and up to ₹50,000 for large three-wheeler EVs. The ministry added that the scheme now targets supporting 560,789 electric vehicles, comprising 500,080 electric two-wheelers and 60,709 electric three-wheelers. The subsidy under the EMPS 2024 scheme will only be available for EVs equipped with advanced batteries. Government extends EV subsidy scheme till September 30, increases outlay

Net investments by Foreign Portfolio Investors (<keyword id="19930635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPIs" source="keywords">FPIs</keyword>) in the Indian <keyword id="19911354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-market" source="keywords">equity market</keyword> declined to Rs 2,916 crore for the week ending July 26, due to investor selling amid <keyword id="22565972" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-uncertainty" source="keywords">budget uncertainty</keyword>. As per data from the National Securities Depository Limited, last week foreign investors injected Rs 15,420 crore into Indian markets, but their buying declined significantly for the week July 22-26. So far in July, the net investment by FPIs in the equity market stands at Rs 33,688 crore. This year's total investment by foreign investors has now surged to Rs 1,39,010 crore. "The Budget 2024-25 has not sparked any significant excitement in the market, while it was both populist and prudent. The increase in short- and long-term capital gains taxes added to the volatility on budget day. Although the government's emphasis on fiscal discipline and growth is appealing, FIIs are cautious due to current high valuations and muted expectations for Q1FY25 results" said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services. He further added, "Meanwhile, DIIs continue to employ a 'buy on dips' strategy, which contributed to market gains on the week's last trading day, particularly in the pharma, auto, metal, IT, and FMCG sectors." The volatility of FPI flows extends beyond India, affecting other markets as well. Countries like Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and South Korea have witnessed FPI inflows this week while the markets in Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam have experienced outflows. "Market focus has swiftly moved on from the Union Budget, unveiled in the week, to the ongoing Q1FY25 earnings season. The FY2025 Union Budget delivered a judicious balance between capital expenditure, fiscal prudence, and welfarism. FPI flows are expected to remain volatile" said Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research, Kotak Securities. This year's trend in foreign investment has been erratic. Foreign investors were net sellers in January, April, and May, cumulatively selling equities worth around Rs 60,000 crore. However, they turned into net buyers in February, March, and June, with cumulative purchases amounting to Rs 63,200 crore. Foreign Portfolio investments drop to ₹2,916 cr on back of high valuations, capital gain tax hike

The number of startups in India has increased to more than 1.4 lakh, highlighted Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, in Rajya Sabha. According to a written response by the minister in the house on Friday, the number of Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (<keyword id="19952901" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dpiit" source="keywords">DPIIT</keyword>) recognized startups State/UT-wise has shown that Maharashtra tops the list with 25,044 registered startups. Karnataka is second with 15,019 registered startups, followed by Delhi with 14,734 startups. Uttar Pradesh has secured the fourth place with 13,299 startups, while Gujarat is in fifth place with 11,436 startups. The minister also informed that the Government has undertaken various efforts to promote and support startups in the country. He stated that the Government, with the objective of building a strong ecosystem for nurturing innovation, startups, and encouraging investments in the startup ecosystem of the country, launched the <keyword id="20080975" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startup-india" source="keywords">Startup India</keyword> initiative on January 16, 2016. The minister also added the 'Startup India Action Plan' comprises 19 action items spanning across areas such as "Simplification and handholding," "Funding support and incentives," and "Industry-academia partnership and incubation." The Action Plan laid the foundation of Government support, schemes, and incentives envisaged to create a vibrant startup ecosystem in the country. In the other scheme 'Startup India: The Way Ahead' includes actionable plans for the promotion of ease of doing business for startups, a greater role of technology in executing various reforms, building capacities of stakeholders, and enabling a digital Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The Government has also established a <keyword id="21713046" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fund-of-funds" source="keywords">Fund of Funds</keyword> for Startups (FFS) with a corpus of Rs 10,000 crore to meet the funding needs of startups. DPIIT is the monitoring agency and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) is the operating agency for FFS. The total corpus of Rs 10,000 crore is envisaged to be provided over the 14th and 15th Finance Commission cycles based on the progress of the scheme and the availability of funds. Apple recorded a 42% share in overall revenue in Q2 2024, down from 45% in Q2 2023. “There were worries that iPhone volumes would disappoint after North American carriers reported record low upgrade rates and lower iPhone sales. We estimate Apple iPhone volumes were flat and revenue declined by 1% YoY despite Pro series sales growth. Apple’s China sales was down 6.5%, but it could have been a lot worse. The company has said that the agreement signed between the two companies prohibits co-mingling and reverse engineering under the Intellectual Property laws. “By indulging in such unscrupulous and illegal activities, you have acted in blatant defiance of the terms and conditions of the agreement and have further infringed the copyright vested exclusively in our client pertaining to the source code,” the notice reads. Ola Electric in a statement to Business Insider India has denied the allegations. “Ola Electric wishes to address the recent claims made by CE Info Systems Limited (“CE Info”) in relation to the alleged issues with Ola Maps vis-à-vis MapMyIndia and reported in news media. Both <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> and <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> regained their mojo back on the final trading session of the week. While Sensex zoomed 1,330.96 points to close the week at over 80,000 (80,436.84 points), Nifty inched up 1.65% to close the day at 24,541.15 points. Out of the 50 Nifty stocks, 47 saw advances, while only 3 declined as of August 16th, 2024. <keyword id="19945574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Wipro" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> (up by 4.23%), Tech Mahindra (up by 3.98%), Grasim (up by 3.65%), Mahindra and Mahindra (up by 3.45%) and Tata Motors (up by 3.36%) were amongst the biggest gainers during the day. On the other hand, Divis Labs (down by 0.62%), SBI Life (down by 0.07%) and Dr. Reddy (down by 0.02%) were amidst the leading laggards. Out of the 2,797 stocks traded during the day, 1,872 saw advances, while 845 declined and another 80 remained unchanged. 95 stocks hit their 52-week high price, while 31 stocks also hit their 52-week lows. 112 stocks hit the upper circuit, or the maximum permissible trading price of a security during a single trading session. This included <keyword id="19945904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ola" source="keywords">Ola</keyword>, which was up by 20%, Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals (up by 10%) and Jindal Poly Films (up by 17.75%). 76 stocks also hit the lower circuit, which included names like MTNL, Dolphin, DCX Systems and more. Most broad market indices closed the day in green, with Nifty Next 50 inching up by 1.82%, Nifty 100 up by 1.66%, Nifty mid cap 50 up by 2.03%, Nifty small cap 50 up by 2.24% and micro caps up by 2.07%. The only exception to this was India VIX, which slipped by 6.68%. Amidst sectoral indices, banks rose by 1.59%, auto was up by 2.01%, financial services was up by 1.7% and FMCG was up by 1.48%. IT (up by 2.89%), media (up by 2.09%) and realty (up by 2.49%) inched up over 2% during the day, while metals and consumer durables moved up by 1% each. Santosh Meena, Head of Research, Swastika Investmart Ltd notes that Indian markets joined the <keyword id="21476120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-rally" source="keywords">global rally</keyword> today, rebounding after a brief period of underperformance driven by <keyword id="19950996" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FIIs" source="keywords">FIIs</keyword>' selling in both the cash and F&amp;O segments. Concerns over slightly weaker earnings, high valuations, and the Hindenburg issue had weighed on the market recently. However, a shift in global sentiment from panic to optimism has fueled today's upturn. "Several factors have contributed to this <keyword id="20016146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bullish-momentum" source="keywords">bullish momentum</keyword>. The fear of a reversal in the yen carry trade has subsided, and strong retail sales figures, along with better-than-expected job data, have alleviated concerns about a potential U.S. recession. Additionally, the market is now fully pricing in a 25 basis point rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve in September, further boosting <keyword id="20322632" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investor-confidence" source="keywords">investor confidence</keyword>. If the Nifty can sustain above its 20-DMA, around 24,500, the bullish momentum could extend towards the 24,800-25,000 zone. On the downside, the 24,200 level now serves as a key support", he continued. Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd noted that markets staged a robust recovery on Friday, gaining nearly 1.5%, driven by positive global cues. After opening with a gap-up, the Nifty initially lost all its gains in the early hours but rebounded due to strong buying interest in select heavyweight stocks. As a result, the Nifty decisively crossed the resistance at 24,400, closing near the day's high at 24,541.15. The rally was broad-based across sectors, with IT, realty, and auto stocks leading the gains. The broader indices also showed a solid recovery, each advancing nearly 2%. "With the Nifty breaking out of its consolidation phase, it appears poised to close the gap around the 24,700 level. If there is any dip, the 24,300-24,400 zone should provide support. We recommend aligning trades with a focus on stock picking. In the absence of any major domestic triggers, attention will remain on global market performance for further cues", said Mishra.

Around 26 per cent of <keyword id="19896991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer" source="keywords">cancer</keyword> patients in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> have tumours in the head and neck, and there is an upward trend of such cases in the country, a study has found. The findings of the study, conducted on 1,869 cancer patients across the country, were released on the World <keyword id="20775483" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="head-and-neck-cancer" source="keywords">Head and Neck Cancer</keyword> Day observed on Saturday. Cancer Mukt Bharat Foundation, a Delhi-based non-profit organisation, conducted the study by collating data from calls received on its helpline number from March 1 to June 30. Dr. Ashish Gupta, a senior oncologist who is heading the Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign in India, said that India is seeing surge in head and neck cancer cases, especially among young men, due to increased <keyword id="20681485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tobacco-consumption" source="keywords">tobacco consumption</keyword> and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. "Around 80-90 pc of oral cancer patients have been found to use tobacco in some form, be it smoking or chewing. Most of the head and neck cancer are preventable, unlike other cancers for which the reason is unknown. It is a preventable cancer that can be prevented with lifestyle modification. "There is a need to raise awareness to quit tobacco and early check-ups for early pickup of the disease," Gupta said. In India, nearly two-thirds of cancer cases are detected late likely due to low adoption of proper screening, he said. Gupta added that the Cancer Mukt Bharat campaign aims to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer on individuals and communities through education and early detection. "If found early in stages one or two, most head and neck cancers are curable in more than 80 pc of patients. In the field of cancer treatment, we get new medicines almost every week which can treat cancer in better way leading to better outcomes and good quality of life. "A combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy can be used for treating head and neck cancer. Latest cancer treatment has evolved to prioritize not just curing the disease, but also ensuring a good quality of life for survivors," he said. Under the Cancer Mukt Bharat Campaign, a free national helpline number (93-555-20202) was launched recently, which is operational from 10 am to 5 pm from Monday to Saturday. Cancer patients can call on this number to speak to leading oncologists directly or even do a video call to discuss about their treatment without paying any fees. Head and neck cancer was closely followed by gastrointestinal cancers which was 16 per cent. Fufteen per cent cancers in India re breast cancers and and blood cancers make up 9 per cent of them. These data are in line with the latest GLOBOCAN data -- a database that gives global cancer statistics -- on India. GLOBOCON data is part of International Agency for Research on Cancer's Global Cancer Observatory. India is expected to have 2.1 million new cancer cases by 2040, a big jump from the numbers in 2020, as per a recent GLOBOCAN report. Cancers in head and neck rising, account for 26% cases in India: Study

Jaishankar discusses bilateral ties with Turkiye counterpart

New Delhi, Former India coach <keyword id="19923639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rahul-Dravid" source="keywords">Rahul Dravid</keyword> passed a lead to his successor <keyword id="19914485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Gambhir" source="keywords">Gautam Gambhir</keyword> in taming the tough situations he is bound to encounter - "exhale, take a step back", a message that left the latter "emotional." Dravid vacated the hot seat after India's triumph in the T20 World Cup in the Americas last month, and Gambhir took over the reins of the team from the on-going whiteball tour to <keyword id="19931726" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka" source="keywords">Sri Lanka</keyword>. "From one Indian cricket coach to another, one last thing. In the most heated of times, exhale, take a step back. I wish you the very best Gautam. I am sure you will take the Indian team to even greater heights," Dravid said in a video posted by <keyword id="19901245" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI" source="keywords">BCCI</keyword> on its 'X' handle. Dravid's dry wit came to the fore even amidst that touching message. "Even if it's difficult for you, crack a smile. Whatever else happens, that will shock people," he said, eliciting a wide smile from Gambhir. Gambhir sounded moved while thanking his predecessor for the wise words "I don't get too emotional but I think this message actually made me a lot emotional which normally I shouldn't. But it's a great message. "It's massive shoes that I can hopefully fill. Hopefully, I can do that with absolute honesty, transparency and hopefully, I can make the entire nation and more importantly, the person I have always looked up to - Rahul Bhai - proud," he said. Dravid was certain that Gambhir, who carried a never-say-die attitude in his playing days, will bring his fighting qualities to the coaching job as well. "As your teammate, I saw you giving it your all on the field. As your batting partner and fellow fielder, I saw your resilience and refusal to surrender. Across many IPL seasons, I noted your desire to win, your assistance to younger players and your drive to extract the best out of your team on the field. "I know how dedicated and passionate you are about Indian cricket and I am sure you will bring all these qualities into the new job," he said. The 51-year-old, however, offered a word of caution to his one-time teammate about living under constant scrutiny. "As you know, the expectations will be high and the scrutiny will be intense," he said, also reminding that there will be overwhelming support for him from all quarters. "But even in the worst of times you will never be alone. You will have the support of the players, your support staff, the leaders of the past, the management and never forget for whom you play - for fans who are very demanding but will always be behind the team." Dravid hoped that Gambhir will have a fully-fit squad to work with, and will have the assistance of fortune in crunch moments. "I also hope that you will also have the availability of fully fit players in every squad. Good luck with that. I also wish you a little bit of luck, as you know that all of us coaches need to make us look that little bit wiser and smarter than we actually are," he noted. The former Indian captain also urged Gambhir to forge a strong bond with the team members - something he managed to do during his tenure. "Hello Gautam, and welcome to the most exciting job in our world, as coach of the Indian cricket team. It's been three weeks since I ended my stint with the Indian team in a manner that was beyond my dreams, both in Barbados and a few days later in that unforgettable evening in Mumbai. "More than anything else I will cherish the memories and friendships I made in my time with the squad. As you take over the role of India coach, it's what I wish for you as well," he added. Gambhir imbibed Dravid's words in their true sense, and said he has not seen a more "selfless" servant of Indian cricket. "I don't know how to react because this message means so much to me. The reason is not because it comes from the person who I have succeeded but from a person who I have always looked up to when I was playing. "I have always felt that and I said it in a lot of my interviews - I think the most selfless cricketer I have actually ever played with. Rahul bhai has done anything and everything Indian cricket needed." Gambhir said Dravid's association with Indian cricket is a text book for others to learn from. "I think there is so much to learn from, not only for me but for the next generation and the current generation as well. That's how important Indian cricket is, not me, not individuals," he said.
