Singapore Airlines will make an additional investment of Rs 3,194.5 crore in Tata Group-owned Air India post-merger of Vistara in November. The merger, announced on November 29, 2022, and set to be completed on November 11, 2024, will result in Singapore Airlines having a 25.1% stake in the enlarged Air India. Full-service carrier Vistara, which started flying on January 9, 2015, is a joint venture between Tatas and Singapore Airlines, where the latter holds a 49% shareholding. Vistara's last flight will take off tomorrow i.e. November 11, 2024. Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group on Friday said its consideration for the merger comprises the 49% interest in Vistara and Rs 20,585 million (Rs 2,058.5 crore) in cash in exchange for a 25.1% equity interest in the enlarged Air India. Post-merger, SIA expects to recognize a non-cash accounting gain of around 1.1 billion Singapore dollars and also start equity accounting for its share of Air India's financial results. According to a release on Friday, the merger includes an agreement for SIA to contribute its share of any funding previously provided by Tata prior to the completion of the merger, together with relevant funding costs up to Rs 5,020 crore that would allow it to maintain a 25.1% stake in Air India. "SIA's additional capital injection is expected to be Rs 31,945 million (equivalent to SGD 498 million), based on Tata's funding to Air India to date. This will occur after the completion of the merger and within November 2024 through subscription to new Air India shares. "Future capital injections will be considered based on Air India's requirements and available funding options," according to the release issued while announcing the airline's financial performance for the six months ended September 2024. The merger of Vistara with Air India will mark a major consolidation in the fast-growing Indian aviation space. SIA said the merged entity will have a significant presence across all key Indian air travel segments, including domestic, international, full-service, and low-cost operations. "This will strengthen SIA's multi-hub strategy, allowing it to continue participating directly in India's large and fast-growing aviation market," it added. Recently, Air India and SIA agreed to significantly expand their codeshare agreement, adding 11 Indian cities and another 40 international destinations to their network.

The sources on Wednesday said several cabin crew members started reporting sick since Monday evening and as there are not enough cabin crew members, "scores of flights" have been cancelled at various airports, including Kochi, Calicut and Bangalore. Late last month, a union representing a section of the Air India Express cabin crew alleged that the airline is being mismanaged and there is a lack of equality in the treatment of the staff. Air India Express Employees Union (AIXEU), a registered union, which claims to represent around 300 cabin crew members, mostly seniors, had also alleged that mismanagement of the affairs has affected the morale of the employees. Many passengers took to social media on Wednesday complaining about the sudden cancellation of flights. In response to a passenger's post on X about flight cancellation, Air India Express apologised and said the flight was cancelled "due to operational reasons". "As part of our service recovery process, you can either opt to reschedule the flight within the next 7 days or request a full refund through our chat bot Tia...," the airline said in a post on X. Business Insider verified the map using Flightradar24's playback feature.But as the sun rises and time reaches UTC 12:00 — or 8 a.m. ET on Friday — air traffic for the three major US airlines doesn't pick up. Early mornings on weekdays tend to be busy travel times at US airports.US flight cancellations started early Friday morning, according to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company.Airlines had canceled nearly 1,700 flights — or 6.3% of their scheduled US service for the day — as of 11 a.m. ET, Cirium reported. That number had grown from about 500 cancellations at 6 a.m. ET.Thirty-seven percent of US flights on Friday departed after a delay of at least 30 minutes, Cirium also said.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-american-warn-pilots-of-communication-issues-amid-grounding-2024-7">Delta, United, and American all issued ground stops</a> for their flights early on Friday. American and Delta have started lifting the stop orders, allowing some flights to take to the skies.The map from McCarthy and Flightradar24 appears to show a pickup in departures near 8 a.m. ET.United and American warned pilots in the air that the IT glitch was affecting communication between their aircraft and people on the ground, including air traffic control and the airlines themselves.The IT problem, which has affected everything from banks to hospitals, affected flights worldwide.Passengers in airports from the UK to Thailand waited to learn whether their flights would depart, with airport and airline staff directing passengers to check Google, not airport monitors, for the status of their flight or issuing hand-written boarding passes.The CrowdStrike update that led to the problems affected devices that use <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/crowdstrike-global-it-outage-one-defective-it-update-sparked-chaos-2024-7">Microsoft's Windows operating system</a>.

The first of the <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> aircraft with GE engines are expected to be service ready in 2023 itself, Vikram <keyword id="142" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rai" source="Orion">Rai</keyword> - Country Head, South Asia and Indonesia of GE Aerospace said on Thursday. Air <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, part of Tata group, had signed an order for 40 GE engines, plus a multi-year engine services agreement. "The first of the new aircraft will enter service in late-2023, with the bulk to arrive beginning mid-2025," Rai said in an exclusive interview with ANI. "Air India already has started taking delivery of 36 leased B777 and A320 aircraft to accelerate its fleet and network expansion." Terming Air India's engine order as a "big opportunity" for the jet engines and systems suppliers company, he said it reflects continued confidence in GE Aerospace technology --which has been powering Air India's carriers for more than 40 years. Earlier this month, Air India, in a historic deal, announced it will buy 250 aircraft from Airbus and has also selected Boeing for the purchase of up to 290 planes as part of its growth strategy. Air India was looking for a mix of aircraft to boost their domestic and international network through recent orders. Soon after the divestment of the airline, the airline indicated it was going for a historic order. "This order further deepens that relationship," Rai added. When asked how GE sees Indian aviation space becoming a key player in the coming years with multiple stakeholders or companies looking to expand its base, he said the majority of the aircraft that domestic carriers have on order right now is expected to be powered by engines from GE Aerospace and CFM (a joint venture between GE Aviation and Safran Aircraft Engines). "Approximately 1,100 of the 1,200 aircraft that are currently on order will be powered by GE or CFM." India is the third-largest civil aviation market and it has the potential to expand exponentially with an increasing number of flyers and the country's economic growth story. "There are currently more people in the middle class--around 440 million--than the entire population of the US. But India has only 700 commercial aircraft, compared to the US's over 5000 aircraft. The potential to grow the commercial aviation market is huge. We are happy to help local airlines and also partner with airframers to bring the best of our technology to this market," he said. In the same breath, he said India is not just a market for GE Aerospace as it is also where it innovates on aerospace technology at its engineering centre in Bengaluru, in partnership with industry and academia. "We also source engine parts from 13 Indian manufacturers and from our own factory in Pune for our global supply chain," Rai added. India aims to develop itself as a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub for defence equipment and systems. "GE helped set up Air India's MRO facility that includes GE90 testing capabilities in <keyword id="4072" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nagpur" source="Orion">Nagpur</keyword> in 2018-19. We are keen to help our partners set up service and maintenance capabilities locally," he told ANI. On a question posed what is GE's medium and long-term plan for Indian aviation space and also has been in touch with any other Indian carriers for similar deals, he, without getting into specifics, said, GE engages with various Indian carriers from time to time. "Other than this historic Air India order some of our notable previous orders for GE and our joint venture partner CFM includes: <keyword id="11911527" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="akasa-air" source="Orion">Akasa Air</keyword> with CFM for its LEAP-1B in 2021; IndiGo LEAP-1A order for 310 Airbus A320neo family aircraft in 2021; IndiGo for LEAP-1A to power 280 Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft in 2019; Vistara order for GEnx-1B engines for six Boeing 787 aircraft in 2018," he added.
