Ajith Kumar said that most of the accessible land area has been covered and the next focus will be to search the <keyword id="21632048" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inaccessible-areas" source="keywords">inaccessible areas</keyword>. Wayanad's <keyword id="22596328" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chooralmala" source="keywords">Chooralmala</keyword> and Mundakkai were hit by massive landslides on July 30 claiming over 300 lives and creating widespread property damage. The search operations have entered the eighth day today. "Rescue and search operation is getting into the last phase now. Land area is almost covered except for the slushy area where there are around 50-100 metres of mud. The mission is to reach inaccessible areas, with forest officials acting as guides since they know the area well. He said that the focus for today will be on riverside and valley areas. The ADGP further said that the weather in the area is not favourable and during the previous search operations, local volunteers got stranded in inaccessible areas so these commandoes will be airdropped on specific locations. "The team consists of trained commandos, specifically SOG commandos. We are planning to airdrop the team within 6 km of Soochipara Waterfalls. After searching the area, if any bodies are found, we plan to airlift them," Ajith Kumar said while speaking to on Tuesday. As per the officials, a scanning mission focusing on the Chaliyar River will be conducted today by a special team on a helicopter. As per the State Health Ministry, the death toll stands at 308 as of August 2. 226 bodies and 181 body parts have been recovered so far and 180 people are still missing. The Environment Ministry sources earlier said that the Kerala government allegedly approved numerous projects in Wayanad over the past four years, including those related to non-coal mining, without conducting a thorough study of the district's topography and geomorphology. "A combination of factors, including a lack of adequate study of the topography and geomorphology and insufficient safeguards against human activities such as large-scale urbanisation and tourism, have made the region more prone to disasters, appearing to be exacerbated by human impact," the sources told ANI. Scientists from the state and beyond attributed the disaster to a deadly mix of forest cover loss, mining in the fragile terrain and climate change.

The <keyword id="19906608" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="death-toll" source="keywords">death toll</keyword> from the landslides in Kerala's <keyword id="19945808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wayanad" source="keywords">Wayanad</keyword> district continued to rise as rescuers, braving rains and challenging terrain, searched for around 300 people still missing on the fourth day of the incident. "The death toll from landslides has risen to 195," Wayanad District Collector Meghashree D R said on Friday. Fears grew that the death toll would climb higher, as authorities reported that many more body parts had been collected, with genetic testing underway to identify the remains. Earlier in the day, Kerala ADGP M R Ajith Kumar said 300 people were still missing. "Based on the information we have received till now, approximately around 300 people are still missing. However, the Revenue Department is still collating the details. Within one or two days we will be able to get a final picture," Kumar said. The search and <keyword id="20501159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rescue-operations" source="keywords">rescue operations</keyword> by 40 teams that got underway early morning received an impetus due to the completion of the 190-foot-long Bailey bridge. The structure will enable the movement of heavy machinery, including excavators, and ambulances to the worst-affected Mundakkai and Chooralmala hamlets. A Defence source said Columns with dog squads commenced search operations at 7 am. Search operations were planned based on local interest. Officials said the 40 teams are conducting search operations in six zones of the landslides-hit areas -- Attamala and Aaranmala (first), Mundakkai (second), Punchirimattam (third), Vellarimala village (fourth), GVHSS Vellarimala (fifth), and riverbank (sixth). The joint teams include personnel from the Army, NDRF, DSG, Coast Guard, Navy, and MEG along with three locals and one forest department employee. In addition to this, a three-pronged search operation has also been launched, focusing on the Chaliyar river. The eight police stations, along the 40-km stretch of Chaliyar, have joined forces with local swimming experts to search the river for bodies that may have flown downstream or trapped along the riverbanks. Simultaneously, another search operation is being conducted using a police helicopter. Besides this, the Coast Guard, Navy, and Forest Department also jointly conducted a search operation focusing on the riverbanks and areas where bodies may be trapped. The District Collector said GPS coordinates from aerial drone pictures and cell phones, including the last location of people who lived in the landslide-hit areas, have been used to identify spots where search and rescue operations can be focused. She also said that aerial photographs taken by drones have helped identify GPS coordinates of specific search locations. "We mapped these data and gave it to all the teams so that the search and rescue operations can proceed efficiently and speedily," the Collector said. According to official sources, the extent of human loss will emerge when rescuers clear houses covered by debris and wooden logs using heavy machinery. Meanwhile, the rescue workers on Friday found a family of four isolated in an area near Padavetti Kunnu. The family--comprising two males and as many females, was isolated after the landslide cut off their house from the rest of the region. A Defence PRO said the family will be airlifted. State Revenue Minister K Rajan, a day ago, had said a drone-based radar from Delhi would arrive on Saturday to locate bodies buried in the mud. He also said that currently, six dogs are assisting in the search operation and four more will join from Tamil Nadu. Amidst the despair, an elderly tea stall owner from Kollam, Subaida, has exemplified the expression of humanity. She selflessly donated her meagre earnings and welfare pension to help those who lost everything in the devastating landslides that hit Wayanad. Hailing from Pallithottam in Kollam district, Subaida runs a small tea shop to make ends meet for herself and her husband. She donated Rs 10,000 to the Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF). The amount comprises her small earnings from the tea stall and the welfare pensions received by the couple. "I had withdrawn the amount from the bank a few days ago to repay the interest on a loan. But then we saw on TV that contributions were being sought from everyone to help those who lost everything in the Wayanad landslides. "My husband immediately asked me to go and give the money to the Collector. He said the interest payments could wait, as giving aid was more important. So, I went and deposited the money at the collectorate here. I cannot go to Wayanad and help out in person," she said. Students living both in the UK and abroad have raised questions about the viability of travel and study when Britain eventually returns from lockdown. With one in five students in the UK from overseas, a potential crisis is looming.Subhash Rao wants to join that cohort of students but is "on the fence" about whether to come to Britain due to the high number of coronavirus cases. Living with his family in India's southwestern city of Mysore, 21-year-old Rao tells Business Insider that he is having "a tough time deciding on whether or not to pursue the idea of going abroad."He's eyeing a master's in engineering management at either Birmingham, Greenwich, Nottingham Trent, or Northumbria University. He's considering pausing his <keyword id="6355445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="education">education</keyword>al journey because of the prospect of attending online-only courses. For Rao, paying up to £15,000 ($18,400) in course fees doesn't feel like a good return for a virtual-only experience. He's also relying on an educational loan from an Indian bank to fund his British education. It's a lot to weigh."Paying so much money and attending online classes is rubbish really. But if that's the case I'd be more than happy to defer my offer to the next intake which would probably be in January (2021)." Rao isn't alone. In Chennai, Ajith Kumar hopes to study sports physiotherapy at Cardiff University from September. The reliance on physical contact in the course could be impacted by social distancing rules in classrooms. Cardiff University plans to deposit refunds for international students if they are unable to travel due to continued travel restrictions. Still, Kumar hopes to arrive in the UK if lockdown is released by the fall. Twenty-six-year-old Yuliya Chystaya from Belarus is concerned about such a move. She's concerned that the master's course in human anatomy she'd like to pursue at Glasgow University in September cannot be done online. "I have to be in a morgue and access MRI scans," she said. "It's not fair to pay hefty fees and then go online. Students don't get as much from an online course versus face-to-face. And there's access to labs and libraries to think about."The University of Cambridge on Wednesday became the <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-52732814">first British university to publicly announce a cancellation</a> of all face-to-face lectures for the next academic year due to the coronavirus. It's a bold decision by the University of Cambridge which could "set a trend for other universities" to follow suit, says Laura Rettie, vice president of global communications at student consultancy firm Studee. "The knock-on effects could leave a lasting impact. International students may choose not to travel to the UK, student accommodation will be left empty, and the money that students bring to the area will be lost."It's not just the injection of capital international students bring to communities, but a wealth of culture to towns and cities across the UK."It's even more pronounced in smaller towns," says Vivienne Stern, director of <keyword id="213664" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Universities-UK">Universities UK</keyword> International."It's an important injection; we take multiculturalism for granted in London. In smaller cities people get the chance to become familiar with Indian or Chinese students." <h2>With travel restrictions in place, social distancing and the potential cancellation of classes, universities face a potential problem of mass deferrals that could hit their finances. </h2>With just under half of the <a href="https://issuu.com/universitiesuk/docs/higher-education-facts-and-figures-2019/2?ff&amp;hideShareButton=true&amp;backgroundColorFullscreen=%23eeeeee&amp;pageLayout=singlePaget=singlePage">total reported income of UK higher education institutions</a> (£38.2 billion) sourced through tuition fees, mounting concerns from international students could leave a dent in high education finances. Stern says UK universities are budgeting for up to a 20-percent decrease in budgets. With a no-deal Brexit also in the wind, a plummet in the number of international students could see Britain's higher education institutions "financially unviable if the worst predictions are realized." Michael Peak, head of higher education systems research at the British Council, believes Britain's reliance on international students goes beyond tuition fees. "The longer term value we gain through the networks is they bring the friendships they make… it drives future business opportunities for the UK. It's difficult to put a figure on."What attracts students to Britain are its highly collaborative seminars, a practice not always reflected elsewhere. Valeria Villa completed her masters in politics and international relations from Keele University in 2014. Now back at home in Ecuador, she misses the interactive nature of British courses. "How the professors thought was unique. Even if they didn't agree with you they'd listen to you. In Latin America, what the professor says goes," she said. Villa says she'd jump at the chance to return to Britain perhaps to study business, even via online courses. <h2>The switch to online-only courses could be an opportunity to cater to students with differing cultural norms too. </h2>"In some educational cultures, it's not okay to put yourself forward and speak up, jump into a debate or challenge your teachers," says Stern. "They'll be a revolution in the way online learning is delivered," she adds."It's taken a crisis to boost institutions that didn't routinely deliver programs online effectively."Jawad Sabra arrived in the UK from Lebanon in 2013 to study a masters in computing science and has since opened a startup helping international students into sponsored jobs in Britain. He believes they should still come to the UK to network and benefit from free time under social gathering restrictions. "If you're trying to maximize the value from your course, it doesn't matter how you receive that content. What matters is that you receive that knowledge, and you acquire industry skills and build your profile," Sabra said.Back at the British Council, Peak suggests online courses fit in with the "transnational education" UK universities already have in place. "It isn't always just about travelling internationally to study here. It might be studying away for two years and one year at home. This could open minds to new flexible ways. That way students still get international experience, the quality of a UK education, and networks. It's a different way to approach education."<h2>Second generation expats in the UAE already study at educational 'hubs' without leaving their country for a British education.</h2>"It's all about opening people's minds towards adapting to a global pandemic. Staying in her family home in Belgium, Charlotte Rubin is deciding whether to pursue a scholarship in the US, but has already put down a deposit to study law at the London School of Economics in London.
