India's T20 World Cup squad: Samson, Chahal make the cut, Rinku Singh joins as a reserve

The tour will end with Boxing Day and New Year Tests at Centurion and Cape Town respectively. "He (Kohli) has informed the BCCI and selectors that he needs a break from white-ball cricket and he will get back to them about when he wants to play white ball cricket next. At the moment he has informed the BCCI that he will be playing red-ball cricket, which means he is available for selection for the two Test matches in South Africa," a source was quoted as saying in the report. Kohli had a superb Men's ODI World Cup at home, amassing 765 runs in 11 innings, including three hundreds and surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for the most number of ODI centuries by a batter and is currently on a holiday in London. Virat Kohli to take a break from white-ball games on South Africa tour; to be available for Tests: Report

New Delhi, India's ODI and Test captain <keyword id="13937" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rohit-sharma" source="Orion">Rohit Sharma</keyword> is unlikely to play T20 Internationals anymore and had discussed his future in the shortest format before the start of the 50-over World Cup, according to sources in the BCCI. Rohit hasn't played a single game in the shortest format since India's T20 World Cup semi-final exit in November 2022. Hardik Pandya has mostly led the Indian team in T20Is since then. The 36-year-old India skipper has played 148 T20Is scoring 3853 runs at a strike-rate of nearly 140 with four hundreds. "It is not a new development. Rohit hasn't played any T20Is in past one year as the focus was on ODI World Cup. He had extensive discussions with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar in this regard. He has himself volunteered to stay away from T20Is. It has completely been Rohit's call," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. After Rohit, India have four openers -- Shubman Gill, <keyword id="1999303" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="yashasvi-jaiswal" source="Orion">Yashasvi Jaiswal</keyword>, Ishan Kishan and <keyword id="4238575" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ruturaj-gaikwad" source="Orion">Ruturaj Gaikwad</keyword> -- and all of them are proven IPL performers. If the younger crop does not perform, the selectors or the BCCI brass might just ask Rohit to reconsider his current stand. It is understandable that at this stage of his career, Rohit would like to manage his workload and ensure that he remains mostly injury free for the remainder of his career. It will be impossible to play three formats and IPL each year and with seven Test to be played between December 2023 to March 2024, the Indian skipper's focus will be mostly on red-ball cricket. He still has a realistic chance of leading India to another World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025 and his own form in traditional format has been superb since he started opening for India in 2019. After his long injury-forced break from competitive cricket due to lower back stress fracture, there were question marks over Bumrah's ability to play red ball cricket but those in the know of things said that the Gujarat man is ready for his comeback "Bumrah is fighting fit and results were there for everyone to see. He is back at his peak fitness and is itching to play the Test matches. With Bumrah and Shami, you need to use them based on what is the priority format at a given time. Bumrah will certainly play T20 World Cup if all goes well," the BCCI source added.

Rohit Sharma unlikely to play T20Is in near future

Former Indian cricketer <keyword id="1518" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="irfan-pathan" source="Orion">Irfan Pathan</keyword> has questioned the sudden inclusion of off-break spinner <keyword id="200030" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ravichandran-ashwin" source="Orion">Ravichandran Ashwin</keyword> in the Indian ODI series against Australia starting from September 22, ahead of the <keyword id="22177" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="world-cup" source="Orion">World Cup</keyword>. Ashwin who hasn't been part of the Indian ODI squad for a long time, played his last ODI match in January 2022 against South Africa. Talking to Star Sports, Irfan Pathan felt that there was a lack of planning and that Ashwin should have been given more chances. "You get a better spinner than Ashwin in the entire world. But in a tournament as big as the World Cup, where there is immense pressure, you can't expect a senior player to walk in and play for the team in a format which he hasn't played for a long time and prove his worth. So you are leaving it entirely to fate. There is no planning here. Had there been a plan for Ashwin, they should have given him some game time before the World Cup. Yes, he will be playing against Australia, but is that enough? You have to bowl for 10 overs, adjust in the team as well, and give India that result. It isn't that easy. Planning should have been better," said Pathan. The decision to bring Ashwin back into the mix comes ahead of the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, which is set to commence next month. Ashwin was not selected in the provisional ODI World Cup squad, nor was part of the Asia Cup. However, with the injury of Axar Patel, Ashwin's potential return to the ODI format looks possible. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selection for the BCCI, made a suggestion that Patel had a good chance of recuperating in time for the World Cup. But if Patel can't recover by the International Cricket Council's deadline on September 28, Ashwin might be a last-minute addition to the World Cup squad. Irfan Pathan questions R Ashwin's selection in ODI series against Australia ahead of World Cup

Binny, 30, came on at first change in the 12th over with the hosts 39 for 2 and removed Mushfiqur Rahim with his fourth ball, the Bangladesh captain gloving a catch to the wicketkeeper down the legside. In his second over, he removed Mithun Ali and Mahmudullah in successive balls, and though he missed a hat-trick, the Karnataka allrounder collected a fourth in due time when Mashrafe Mortaza edged a superb moving delivery to Wriddhiman Saha. That gave him figures of 4-2-4-4. 
 In his fifth over, Binny bowled <keyword id="810118" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Nasir-Hossain">Nasir Hossain</keyword> to record a five-wicket haul and two balls later the Bangladesh innings ended when Al-Amin Hossain was bowled for 0. India had been bowled out for the lowest ODI total against Bangladesh, but thanks to Binny and Mohit Sharma (4 for 22) to leave the home team stunned. 
 
Binny was voted Man of the Match, not surprisingly. "I think you wait for an opportunity when you're on top and you try to take it as far as you can. I got that opportunity today and made the most of it," he said.

Binny's 6 For 4 Breaks Kumble's 21-Year Indian Record

The Indian team led by <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">MS Dhoni</a> to contest the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007 went from being rank outsiders - the oldest player of that squad was Ajit Agarkar at 29 and there were nine under the age of 25 - but ended up winning the trophy to change the landscape of world cricket. 
 
On the seventh anniversary of India's glorious five-run win, gocricket.com casts an eye on the XI that took the field on that memorable day of September 24, 2007, when they beat Pakistan in Johannesburg to lift the trophy, and how their international careers panned out since.

The left-hand top-order batsman from Delhi used the 2007 World Twenty20 to pitchfork himself back into Test plans, scoring 227 runs in the tournament with a best of 75 in the final. His first Test since December 2005 came a few months after the World Twenty20, and by mid-2008 Gambhir was chosen as opening partner to Virender Sehwag. Gambhir’s Test and ODI careers were successful until early 2013, when he was axed from all formats following a prolonged slump. He last played an ODI in January 27 and was handed a Test recall this summer in England, but 25 runs in four innings could have closed the curtains on his career.

 The older Pathan brother was handed a debut in the 2007 World Twenty20 final, as opener alongside Gambhir, and was a common feature in India's ODI and T20 teams until early 2012. He enjoyed much success with <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> in the <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> and has won two titles with Kolkata Knight Riders. Yusuf, 31, played 57 ODIs and 22 T20Is for India.

Uthappa had an amazing run in the 2014 IPL, scoring 660 runs, which was the most runs scored by an Indian batsman in a single edition of the tournament. That earned him a recall to India's ODI squad after six years, but an average tour of Bangladesh has again sidelined him, though he did lead India A in Australia this summer. On the domestic front, Uthappa had a strong 2013-14 season, scoring 374 runs in five Ranji Trophy games for Karnataka and 538 in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

 Dropped from the ODI team after a poor tour of South Africa in December, Yuvraj last played for India in the ICC World Twenty20 in April, where he managed just one half-century in five innings and was widely criticised for his go-slow innings in the final against Sri Lanka. A decent IPL followed for <keyword id="6354506" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Royal-Challengers-Bangalore">Royal Challengers Bangalore</keyword> (376 runs, five wickets) but it wasn't enough to earn Yuvraj a place in India's ODI squad for Bangladesh or India. Have we seen the last of the Player of the Tournament in the 2011 World Cup?

 Undoubtedly the biggest gainer from 2007. Given the captaincy of the T20 side without any domestic leadership experience, Dhoni led the side to glory and the rest, as they say, is history. He has since captained India to the 50-over World Cup and No 1 in Tests, apart from enhancing his reputation as arguably the best limited-overs finishers. Dhoni's success with IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings - they have won two IPL titles as well as the <keyword id="56308" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Champions-League-Twenty20">Champions League Twenty20</keyword> - has helped him become the richest cricketer around.

Rohit made his T20I debut at the age of 20 during the 2007 tournament, after getting an ODI call a couple months earlier, but the talent shown at a young age has not fully been realised. He has been in and out of all three formats for India, despite becoming the third batsman to score an ODI double-century. Rohit, now 27, still has time on his side to prove that he belongs at Test level. Looks a certainty to tour Australia and New Zealand, injury aside, for next year's World Cup.

With Yuvraj, probably the second-most naturally talented Indian cricketer of the last decade. But like Rohit, the allrounder from Baroda has not lived up to the huge expectations. Irfan was Man of the Match in the 2007 World Twenty20 final but has since played only 16 T20Is, the last of which came in October 2012. With his pace dropping and a series of injuries taking their toll, Irfan has been relegated to domestic cricket and the IPL, but recently stated that he'll be back in India blue.

India's No 1 spinner in 2007 (he took seven wickets at the tournament), Harbhajan is today looking for way back into India's plans. The veteran offspinner, who has 413 wickets from 101 Tests, is currently out of the Indian squad. The 33-year-old last represented India in a Test match a year ago, while in ODIs his last match was in July 2011. His last T20I was in September 2012. 
 
<keyword id="111751" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Joginder-Sharma">Joginder Sharma</keyword> 
 Who can forget Joginder for his last over against Pakistan in the final? Two evenings after he was given the final over and dismissed <keyword id="6377175" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Michael-Hussey">Michael Hussey</keyword> and Brett Lee to clinch India passage into the final of the World Twenty20, Joginder was again entrusted with the last six balls with Pakistan needing 13 runs to win. A wide and a six later, Joginder created history. Cruelly, that was the last time Joginder represented India. He has since plied his trade for Haryana, successfully overcoming a life-threatening injury to make a return for his state.

 A sad tale of a real talent gone astray. The Kerala fast bowler, who bowled some telling spells in South Africa, was handed a life ban by the <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> last year for his alleged involvement in spot-fixing during the IPL, though he insists he was totally honest and non-corrupt. An international career that lasted just 27 Tests, 53 ODIs and 10 T20Is seems one truly unfulfilled for arguably the most naturally skilled Indian fast bowler to emerge since Zaheer Khan.

The left-arm seamer from Uttar Pradesh played a huge role in India's success in South Africa with 12 wickets at an economy rate of 6.33, with his spells against South Africa and Pakistan being the best he's bowled in Twenty20. A couple successful IPL seasons hinted at much more after RP struggled with injuries and form, but he has not played for India since he was shockingly recalled for a Test in England when holidaying in Miami. RP remains a central figure for UP in domestic cricket.
