<ul><li>Speaking at the Business Insider Global Trends Festival 2020, Indian billionaire industrialist and <keyword id="6400918" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Piramal-group">Piramal Group</keyword> chairman <keyword id="6411578" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ajay-piramal">Ajay Piramal</keyword> said that post the pandemic, more consolidation will take place in pharmaceuticals and the financial services space. And, the company is positioning itself to be ready.</li><li>Piramal revealed that in the midterm, the company has plans of having two independently listed companies of pharmaceuticals, as well as financial services. </li><li>The Piramal Group has cut down on its debt significantly from ₹55,122crore in March 2019 to ₹38,153 crore in June 2020. </li><li>He further highlighted that the 2018 IL&amp;FS crisis and other business incidents that took place after that were alarming for the company, and that’s when it decided to cut down on debt. </li><li>The company’s current net debt to equity ratio is 1.2 times, as per its first-quarter financial report. </li></ul>The post-lockdown boom in the Indian pharma and financial sector has caught the eyes of Indian billionaire industrialist and Piramal Group chairman Ajay Piramal, who is now looking to expand the business across these segments. A global partner to be with us— they can be on our side, and we can accelerate this growth rate—the real opportunities for organic growth as well as through acquisitions. Emphasising on the need to cut down on debt, Piramal said that there are various reasons that drove the company’s decision of cutting down on debt. So we said that the best way to tackle this crisis is to bring in your own equity and actually to reduce the debt. ” The company share price also reveals similar investors optimism. After all, he has been in this business for decades, but few remember that in the late 80s, before he purchased Nicholas Labs, he was running a textiles company and a machine tools company! Today, the $4 billion Piramal Enterprises spans sectors as varied as pharmaceutical and financial services and makes a third of its revenue outside India. The larger Piramal Group has interests in real estate and glass manufacturing as well, with offices in over 30 countries. After he completed business management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Business Studies, entered the family business, his father handed him a newly acquired company called Miranda Tools to run - an experience that later helped him deal with the many companies he would acquire in his illustrious career ahead. A wide portfolio A young Piramal had initially faced many hardships including the labour troubles in the textile sector, before he made his entry into pharmaceuticals. That’s when the world saw his penchant for striking deals - a move which diversified the company across the entire range of drugs. He scooped up the domestic manufacturing plants of many multinational pharma majors like Roche, Aventis and more and it helped that back then MNCs were exiting India. Thanks to the many deals he made including buying a glass maker and bulk drug maker and by the time he sold the company, it had presence across the therapeutic range right from antibiotics to dermatological drugs to cardiovascular products. The <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/specials/of-mergers-and-spin-offs-198030201049_1.html">merger with Boehringer Manheim </a>added diabetics and even diagnostics range to its ever growing portfolio that helped it balance risks as a number of drugs’ prices were controlled by the government in the 2000s. The joint venture specialist Piramal also took a visionary approach to his business unlike most of his peers who were reverse engineering drugs in the domestic business earning ire from Big Pharma. Instead he struck joint ventures with MNCs like Boots and Allergan - some of whose brand rights were transferred to the business. By the time the company was sold to Abbott at a spectacular valuation which is 30 times the profit it was making, Nicholas Piramal had six Over-The-Counter brands <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/healthcare/biotech/pharmaceuticals/the-inside-story-of-how-ajay-piramals-pharma-empire-received-a-boost-after-the-abbott-sale/articleshow/62891694.cms">in the top sellers list </a>along with presence in every other therapeutic range. The race to acquire the bankrupt Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL) has intensified with both the final bidders Oaktree and Piramal having enhanced their offers. US-based <keyword id="216100" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Oaktree-Capital">Oaktree Capital</keyword> has raised its offer for the insolvent NBFC by Rs 1,700 crore, intensifying the bidding war with Piramal Enterprises. In its letter to the Committee of Creditors on Thursday, Oaktree said that its bid is now at Rs 36,410 crore and that of Piramal is Rs 34,909 crore. Oaktree's offer came a day after Piramal raised its bid by Rs 1,000 crore and also improved its offer for a controlling stake in DHFL's Pramerica Life Insurance Company to Rs 1,000 crore from Rs 300 crore. "We understand that the bidder that submitted the second highest bid has sought to increase its bid by means of (a) allocating additional interest income to the financial creditors and (b) increasing its bid for the insurance stake. As required, we are allocating an additional amount of Rs 1,700 crores as additional interest income to the financial creditors," Oaktree said in its latest letter to the CoC. The lenders had asked both the final bidders in the December 18 meeting to sweeten their bids. The CoC also asked Oaktree and Piramal to specify the proposed shareholding structure of DHFL's insurance business, where foreign ownership is currently capped at 49 per cent. Earlier, Kapil Wadhawan, the erstwhile promoter of the Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Ltd (DHFL), wrote to the administrator of DHFL, reiterating his new proposal to repay 100 per cent of the principal debt to the creditors. He also assured to run the NBFC following the best corporate governance standards as decided by the lenders. His appeal transcends age, race, religion, gender and ethnicity. Sadhguru has an intimate involvement with nature and understanding of how human life is inextricably woven with the elements. This has guided many of Isha’s ecological initiatives. He launched Rally for Rivers (RfR) in 2017 to raise awareness about India’s dying rivers. It is currently implementing two on-ground river revitalization efforts ⁠— Cauvery Calling in the Cauvery river basin and Waghadi River Revitalization project in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra. The projects are designed to make them self-sustaining, scalable and replicable models for tropical regions globally. Isha’s grassroots programme, Project GreenHands launched in 2004 has helped plant over 38 million trees across Tamil Nadu and has contributed to the state’s marginal increase in green cover. The ‘Save the Weave’ project aims to encourage the world to embrace conscious clothing choices and convert at least 50% of their wardrobe into natural fibers. Synthetic fiber is said to be one of the largest contaminants of soil and water resources on the planet. “The planet is not in any kind of danger. It is only human life which is in danger. I hope we wake up to this fact and do what is needed. If humanity has to live for a long time, you have to think like the earth, act like the earth and be the earth, because that is what you are. I am always being asked by people, Why is a spiritual leader, a yogi, planting trees? Unfortunately, in human minds, we have compartmentalized our life in such a way that we are breaking up one and hoping that the other will live,” he says. Sadhguru’s approach to ecological solutions involves raising human consciousness. He believes that humans must become conscious that their life and wellbeing are closely connected with the wellbeing of all other life forms on earth as told in his Conscious Planet initiative. According to him, ecological challenges appear complex but the solutions are simple which require determination and focus from the community.
