Both companies are looking at opportunities to collaborate on a range of projects, including making OYO accommodations available on the Airbnb platform, a source told Business Insider. While Airbnb has not offered an official comment yet, here is an interview with the co-founder of Airbnb, Nathan Blecharzyk, that was conducted before the deal was announced. The following are the edited excerpts of the answers on the India-specific questions, including one about its competition with OYO, received via email on March 13. Q. Airbnb had aimed to sign up 50,000 homestays in India by 2020. How far have you come? And what is your projection for, say, 2025? How big a part of the global business will India be by 2025? Since the last time I was in India (which was early 2016) our community of hosts has gone from strength to strength and the number of Airbnb listings in India has increased by more than 150%. Our loyal community of hosts have welcomed more than 1.25 million travelers during that period, over 60% of which occurred in just the past 12 months. That growth isn’t just limited to foreign travelers; domestic travel on Airbnb in India has increased by 78% in the past year. Travel to emerging economies is expected to increase at twice the rate of travel to advanced economies from now until 2030 and emerging markets like India are leading the way. With over 45,000 listings, India is a key market for Airbnb. More than one million Indians have chosen Airbnb for their travel globally just last year alone, indicating a tremendous demand for Airbnb among the travellers. Needless to say, India continues to be a promising market for us. We are now working towards achieving 1 billion Airbnb users in the next ten years and India will play an important role in helping us achieve that goal. Q. Are you disillusioned by the recent policy developments in India? Has that affected how bullish you are on India? To the contrary, we’re committed to working closely with policymakers in India and we’ve worked diligently with them to promote home sharing. Q. How big a role do discounts play in Airbnb’s business model? Our platform is fuelled by hosts and guests who are loyal to Airbnb because we treat them like members of a community, not commodities. As a result, Airbnb isn’t governed by discounts and cash backs. Q. Other companies like OYO rooms have scaled their business much faster in India. Was it a conscious decision on part of Airbnb to go slow in India? If yes, why? We don’t typically comment on competitors. Travel and tourism is a large and growing industry in India, and there are going to be a lot of winners here. We are deeply committed to our community in India, we have a thriving business and we’re deeply optimistic about our future. Q. Is Airbnb going to remain a product for English-speaking urban elites? Does it not cap the scalability of the business? India is on its way to becoming one of the new ‘centres of influence’ in global tourism, and it’s going to be an engine of our growth, for us as we aim to welcome one billion users onto our platform in the next ten years. We really think Airbnb can be for everyone, and we have started to focus on specific segments and customize the products for those segments. We have our Plus offering, we have a high end luxury offering as well, and we also have Airbnb for Work, which is actually doing very well in India and it grew about four-fold year over year in India with about 6,500 companies that have signed up to do business travel directly with Airbnb. Q. How feasible it is to sell airline tickets in India? It is a heavily competitive market and deep discounts are imperative? We’re not interested in building our own airline or creating just another place on the Internet where you can buy a plane ticket, but there is a tremendous opportunity to improve the transportation experience for everyone. We’re going to explore a broad range of ideas and partnerships that can make transportation better. We haven’t settled on exactly what those will look like. Q. Will it be easier for you to focus on Indian travellers who are headed abroad than to convince Indians to share their homes with strangers? Would that be your approach to evade some of the policy and infrastructure challenges? Global tourism is growing rapidly and as citizens, businesses and policy-makers open up to the sharing economy phenomenon, and we are seeing increased interest in emerging economies like India. Our loyal community of hosts have welcomed more than 1.25 million travelers since 2016, over 60% of which occured in just the past 12 months. Our growth isn’t just limited to foreign travelers. Domestic travel on Airbnb in India has increased by 78% in the past year. India has approx 410 million millennials, that’s more than the entire population of the US. This group increasingly makes up the dominant segment of consumers, and are looking for new and authentic travel experiences. So while India sees close to 1.2 million outbound travellers, the number of domestic guest arrivals on Airbnb in India increased by almost 78%, last year. We are also planning to focus to more on mainstream domestic travel over the course of the next 2 years i.e. by 2020-21 in line with the origin total addressable market of $17.5 billion which is dominated by domestic business, which is 74% of total total addressable market. Here's what Airbnb's co-founder had to say about OYO before the deal was announced

Airbnb on Thursday <a href="https://press.airbnb.com/airbnb-announces-intention-to-become-a-publicly-traded-company-during-2020/">announced it plans to go public in 2020.</a> The startup did not specify a timeline beyond "during 2020." Airbnb has not clarified whether it has confidentially filed its S-1 IPO paperwork, which would include basic financial information for potential investors to consider. An Airbnb spokesperson declined to comment when asked whether the paperwork has been filed. The home-sharing rental startup was last privately valued at $31 billion in September 2017, according to PitchBook. Airbnb has teased potential IPO plans as recently as March of this year, with cofounder Nathan Blecharczyk saying that the company "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-airbnb-may-defer-its-ipo-plan-2019-3">had not decided if we will go public in 2019."</a> "We have already said that we are taking the steps to be ready to go public in 2019. That doesn't mean we will go public in 2019," Nathan Blecharczyk, an Airbnb cofounder, told Business Insider in a March email interview. The company hasn't clarified how it plans to list its shares, either. Airbnb was considering a direct listing in June, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-airbnb-ipo/airbnb-plans-public-listing-in-2020-idUSKBN1W41Z7">Reuters reported</a>. A number of startups have gone public in 2019 to mixed results. Uber and Lyft went public earlier this year, and both companies have spent most of the time since trading below what they opened at. WeWork's IPO plans — which were recently postponed until at least October — were derailed shortly after the startup publicly filed its S-1 paperwork, which raised questions about the company's CEO, governance, spiraling losses, and unclear path to profitability. Tech startups Zoom, Slack, PagerDuty, CloudFlare, and Pinterest went public in 2019 and are currently trading above their IPO price. Airbnb's initial public offering has been heavily anticipated by Wall Street. It picked up another $1.6 billion in venture capital in 2015 and $1 billion in 2017, and has raised a grand total of $4.4 billion to date, according to PitchBook. $31 billion Airbnb announces plan to go public in 2020

<keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Airbnb">Airbnb</keyword>, the world-renowned <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Govt-to-ease-home-stays/articleshow/52022104.cms">home-share booking site</a>, is confident that it would see manifold growth in its India’s business in the coming few years, because of a rise in the number of travellers using its platform as well as the number of listed properties. 
 
"India has seen tremendous growth in the last one year. About 17,000 properties are now listed in India and we saw 115 per cent growth in listing in 2015 from the previous year. As per industry reports, the Indian travel market is all set to pass the USD 40 billion dollar mark in coming 5 years.

In a series E funding whose details are undisclosed, AirBnB has invested in the Indian hospitality unicorn. According to earlier <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/current/corporate/airbnb-in-talks-to-invest-100-200-million-in-oyo-report/story/329283.html">reports</a>, AirBnB had been looking at investing anywhere between $100 million-$200 million in the Indian startup. “As the 6th largest hotel chain operator in the world, we at, OYO Hotels &amp; Homes, are committed to offering our guests and travelers around the world, great quality living spaces. We are happy to have Airbnb as our partner in this vision,” said Maninder Gulati, Global Chief Strategy Officer at OYO Hotels &amp; Homes. Both Oyo and Airbnb are looking at opportunities to collaborate on a range of projects, including making OYO accommodations available on the Airbnb platform. “India has approximately 410 million millennials, that’s more than the entire population of the US. This group increasingly makes up for the dominant segment of consumers and is looking for new and authentic travel experiences. We are working towards achieving 1 billion Airbnb users in the next 10 years and India will play an important role in helping us achieve that goal,” Nathan Blecharczyk, co-founder of Airbnb had told Business Insider on March 13. Airbnb and IndiGo come together for an 'InterFriendtion'

It is better to have a 100 customers that love you than a million customers that "kind of" like you, said Varsha Rao, head of operations, <keyword id="719382" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airbnb">AirBnB</keyword>, a website for people to list, find and rent lodging in India. 
 "India is a huge travel market. It will be $40 billion opportunity in 5 years. We are looking to localise and learn," she said, as she addressed the audience comprising global investors, top CEOs, startup owners and budding entrepreneurs at the <keyword id="3003094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startup-India">Startup India</keyword>, <keyword id="3016671" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Standup-India">Standup India</keyword> event today.

Airbnb said travellers from over 160 countries and regions have already booked their stays on its platform during the sporting event. The <keyword id="4833237" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paris-Olympics" source="Orion">Paris Olympics</keyword> will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024. As of March 31, 2024, nights booked during the dates of the Olympics are over five times higher than they were in the Paris region the same time a year ago, it added. Paris remains the top-searched city on the platform, with a nearly 40% increase in active listings in the region, ensuring ample availability for guests. In terms of growth in bookings, Asian countries are on the leaderboard, Airbnb said, adding that it has witnessed the highest increase in travellers coming from India, Mainland China, <keyword id="24349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hong-Kong" source="Orion">Hong Kong</keyword> (SAR) and Japan. India alone witnessed an approximately 30% increase in booking of stays in and around Paris during the games, Airbnb said. "The surge in bookings for Paris reflects an exciting trend among Indian travellers, who are increasingly planning trips around iconic sporting events like the Olympics, showcasing their growing appetite for unique, global experiences," Airbnb General Manager for India, <keyword id="19952305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="southeast-asia" source="keywords">Southeast Asia</keyword>, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, Amanpreet Bajaj said. He further said, "Interestingly, while Paris remains a top destination, these travellers are also venturing beyond traditional tourist spots to explore cities like Saint-Denis and Bordeaux to catch their favourite sports."
