Two RSAF F-15SGs were scrambled and escorted the plane away from populated areas to finally land safely at Singapore <keyword id="21363057" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Changi-Airport" source="keywords">Changi Airport</keyword> at around 10:04 pm on Tuesday, the minister said. In a series of posts on X, Ng Eng Hen stated, "Air India Express received an email that there was a bomb on board flight AXB684 that was bound for Singapore. Two of our RSAF F-15SGs scrambled and escorted the plane away from populated areas, to finally land safely at Singapore Changi Airport at around 10:04 pm tonight." "Our Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) systems and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) were also activated. Once on the ground, the plane was handed to the Airport Police. Investigations are ongoing," he further said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Ukraine has mostly been able to counter Russia's air force, blunting its ability to affect the war.</li><li>But Russia may now have a plan to lure away Ukrain's air defense to make an opening, experts said.</li></ul>Russia may be trying to lure Ukraine's air defense systems away from the front line so its air force can play a bigger role, war analysts said.The influential Institute for the Study of War pointed on Wednesday to Russia's increasing missile and drone strikes against Ukraine's energy facilities.It theorized that Russia was doing it to bait Ukraine into moving its air defense systems away from the front lines.Without the defenses in place, Russia could deploy its warplanes with less concern that they'll be shot down."Russian forces may be intensifying strikes to further pressure the Ukrainian command to deploy air defense systems away from the front in order to more safely intensify aviation operations in support of ground operations," the ISW said.Ukraine has largely held back Russia's air force despite having a much smaller and older air force itself.By using its air-defense systems — both Soviet-era and modern, Western-donated supplies — Ukraine has rendered crucial parts of its air space too dangerous for Russian jets to enter.Though Russia can still launch long-range attacks with its planes, the dynamic strongly limits the overall damage it can do.Instead of risking its planes over the front lines, Russia has focused air strikes on towns and cities across Ukraine, killing civilians and destroying residential buildings.Air warfare experts told Business Insider that<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-air-force-enter-devastate-ukraine-if-missiles-run-out-2024-2"> Ukraine's ability to deny Russia's air force has been a hugely impressive achievement</a> — significant enough to stop Russia from winning the war soon after its full-scale invasion in February 2022.However, the strategy is one that Ukraine may not be able to continue successfully as air defense supplies run low.House Republicans have been stalling $60 billion in further aid for Ukraine, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-veteran-in-ukraine-says-ammo-desperately-needed-not-tanks-2024-3">soldiers there say they can feel the impact</a>, as they are forced to ration ammunition and not hit targets.If Ukraine doesn't have enough air defenses, Russia's air force could quickly make its power felt, the experts warned BI earlier this year.Justin Bronk, a Russia and air warfare expert at the UK's Royal United Services Institute, said Ukraine's actions meant Russia's air force "has, up to this point, been largely irrelevant to the conflict in terms of the battlefield."But he warned that could change."Ukraine's ability to sustain air defense coverage over the front lines and the immediate area behind them: If that is not sustained, Ukraine could lose the war quite quickly."The ISW warned in February that Russia <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-air-superiority-avdiivka-could-be-devastating-for-ukraine-2024-2">appeared to temporarily establish air superiority over the town of Avdiivka</a>, likely it had done so since its full-scale invasion started. Sobyanin, on his Telegram channel, said, "Two combat drones have attempted to fly to the city. Both were shot down by air defence systems, one in the Domodedovo area, and another one in the vicinity of Minskoye Highway. No injuries have been reported." Later on, <keyword id="6358826" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword>'s Defence Ministry reported a failed attempt by Ukraine to attack facilities in the Moscow Region by UAV, adding that two drones have been shot down by air defence systems. "An attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack by unmanned aerial vehicles over the territory of the Moscow Region was thwarted during the night. Two drones were shot down by air defence systems," the report said. The attempted terrorist attack did not cause any casualties or damage, the ministry added, according to the TASS News Agency. The tension between Russia and Ukraine started in 2014 but it escalated in 2022 after the former country started its special military operation in the latter country. Earlier, Ukraine has taken down Soviet-era signs from a hilltop monument in Kyiv and replaced the hammer-and-sickle symbol with a trident coat of arms, CNN reported. Kyiv this week changed the Soviet hammer and sickle sign to a trident, the Ukrainian coat of arms, on the shield of the Motherland Monument, which dominates the skyline of the capital. "We believe that this change will be the beginning of a new stage in the revival of our culture and identity, the final rejection of Soviet and Russian symbols and narratives," the Ukrainian culture ministry said. The week-long operation to dismantle the Russian insignia was finished on August 6, according to the ministry. This comes in the midst of a conflict when the country has struggled to define its cultural identity in the face of Russian aggression, CNN reported. The monument, a 102-meter-tall monolith that dominates its surroundings, is made of steel. They can save many lives and really change the situation," Zelenskyy said."Putin must be brought down to earth, and our sky must become safe again.. And it depends fully on your choice... (the) choice whether we are indeed allies," he added.And the president has seemingly had some luck in recent months.President Joe Biden approved the deployment of another Patriot missile system to Ukraine earlier this month, the second the US has sent to the country, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/11/us/politics/patriot-missiles-ukraine-war.html">The New York Times</a> previously reported, citing senior administration and military officials.National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2024/06/20/on-the-record-press-gaggle-by-white-house-national-security-communications-advisor-john-kirby-15/">announced</a> last week that the US would prioritize delivering Patriot missiles to Ukraine over other countries, calling it a "difficult but necessary decision."<h2 id="979885df-8da0-4307-9628-ef32bb0da652">The Patriot air defense system</h2>A 2023 report by the <a target="_blank" href="https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF12297">Congressional Research Service</a> describes the Patriot system as an "integral component of U.S. air and missile defense."One Patriot battery is made up of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nato.int/nato_static_fl2014/assets/pdf/pdf_2015_05/20150508_1505-Factsheet-PATRIOT_en.pdf">six key parts</a>, — a power plant, a radar set, an engagement control station, the antenna mast group, launcher stations, and the interceptor missiles.The systems can operate using either PAC-2 or PAC-3 missiles. The PAC-2 works by detonating near a threatening missile, while the PAC-3 attempts to strike the warhead directly.The first Patriot systems were used by the US in the 1980s, and they were later used in the Gulf War to defend against Iraqi Scud missiles.The system's radar has a range of more than 150 kilometers (around 93 miles), and the missiles can travel at 5,000 kph (over 3,100 mph), per NATO.

So, the scale of the challenge of defending airspace is huge. The fact that the Israelis can play this game of saying 'we have a dome over our whole country' is only partly true," he said.The UK's only practical option was a "point defense" strategy, said Clarke. Point defense refers to defending a limited area or single site against threats like air attacks and guided missiles. A total of nine procurement proposals were approved by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, officials said. "All these procurements will be made from Indian vendors under Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDMM)/Buy (Indian) category which will give substantial boost to the Indian defence Industry towards achieving the goal of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'," the defence ministry said. To enhance protection, mobility, attack capability and increase survivability of mechanised forces, the DAC accorded the approval for procurement of Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicles (LAMV) and Integrated Surveillance and Targeting System (ISAT-S), the ministry said in a statement. The DAC cleared also cleared the procurement of High Mobility Vehicle (HMV) Gun Towing Vehicles for swift mobilisation and deployment of artillery guns and radars. The DAC further approved procurement of next generation survey vessels for the Indian Navy, the ministry said. It said a proposal of the Indian Air Force to ensure avionic upgrade of Dornier aircraft to improve the accuracy and reliability for operations was also given Acceptance of Necessity (AoN). The AoN is the initial approval. "The procurement of Dhruvastra Short Range Air-to-Surface Missile as a potent Indigenous Precision Guided Weapon for indigenously built ALH Mk-IV Helicopters has been cleared by the DAC," the ministry said. "The AoN for procurement of 12 Su-30 MKI Aircraft with associated equipment from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) was also accorded," it said.
