The piece, aptly titled <em>A.I. God</em>, fetched a staggering $1,084,800 at Sotheby’s Digital Art Sale, completely blindsiding initial estimates of $180,000. Ai-Da’s robotic fingers just created history, and people are scratching their heads trying to figure out how they feel about it.<br /><h2>Meet Ai-Da</h2>Ai-Da isn’t your average paintbrush-wielding bot. Designed to resemble a human woman complete with expressive eyes and a bob of brown hair, Ai-Da does more than pose as an artist — she acts as a philosophical commentator on the very technology that powers her. Named after Ada Lovelace, the 19th-century mathematician credited as the world’s first computer programmer, Ai-Da’s artistic journey began as a project by Aidan Meller, a modern art expert. With help from AI wizards at Oxford and Birmingham universities, Ai-Da was equipped with tech that allows her to generate artistic ideas through conversations with her human counterparts.<br /><br />The result is a robot that doesn’t just paint but provokes. "The key value of my work is its capacity to serve as a catalyst for dialogue about emerging technologies," Ai-Da remarked at Sotheby’s. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Three robots dogs are starting a four-month artist residency in Australia, The Guardian reported.</li><li>They have their own studio with docking stations where the Boston Dynamics robot dogs can "sleep".</li></ul><p>Three robot dogs created by Boston Dynamics are part of an exhibition at an art gallery in Australia. </p><p>Akin to the robot dogs seen in the Netflix hit "Black Mirror", they were first revealed in 2015 and quickly went viral. The first video of them garnered more than<a target="_blank" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2019/09/25/app-tech-section/robot-dog-sale-intl-hnk-scli/index.html#:~:text=Boston%20Dynamics%20first%20introduced%20Spot,of%20views%20over%20the%20years."><u> 22 million</u></a> views, per CNN.  </p><p>The four-month <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/triennial/artists-designers/agnieszka-pilat/"><u>residency</u></a> at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne is being <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2023/nov/27/robot-dogs-learning-to-paint-artist-agnieszka-pilat?CMP=soc_568"><u>run by artist Agnieszka Pilat</u></a>, who trained the dogs, The Guardian reported.</p><div type="image" title="Two yellow robotic dogs pictured with artist Agnieszka Pilat" height="3667" width="5500" msid="105536520" hostid="261" sizebytes="1146902"></div><p>The studio has docking stations where the robots, named Basia, Vanya and Bunny, can "sleep," along with cubes containing QR codes that tell the robots their location, per the report.<br /><br />"The National Gallery of Victoria's team has been amazing to work with, and I'm especially grateful for the museum's curator Ewan Mceoin for placing such faith in me," Pilat told Business Insider. "This has been a great team effort and it's an honor to promote a nuanced future technology can have for humanity." <br /><br />Polish-born Pilat even treats one of the dogs as a pet and takes it for walks around New York, according to the Guardian.  </p><p>"I know people think, the robots are coming," she told the outlet. The robots <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boston-dynamics-robot-dogs-can-speak-full-sentecnes-ai-chatgpt-2023-5"><u>can listen and respond verbally</u></a> to humans using Google Assistant's voice technology, Fast Company reported.</p><p>The feature is not yet commercially available, but some of its other capabilities include carrying out "missions" such as identifying leaks and spillage and highlighting equipment damage in the manufacturing and logistics industry. </p><p>Pilat was an artist-in-residence at Boston Dynamics from 2020 to 2021, before starting another residency at Space X, according to her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pilatart.com/about"><u>website</u></a>. </p><p>"Machines are humanity's children," she says on her site. In 2021 humanoid robot <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ai-darobot.com/"><u>Ai-Da held an exhibition</u></a> at the Design Museum in London. </p><p>Created by Engineered Arts, the company behind the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/advanced-humanoid-robot-ameca-engineered-arts-simulate-dreams--2023-10">viral humanoid robot Ameca</a>, Ai-Da can paint and draw using her camera eyes, robotic arm and AI algorithms. </p><p>The robot also had an exhibition at the Concilio Europeo Dell'Arte in the Giardini in Italy last year.</p>

An artist taught 3 'Black Mirror'-style robot dogs to paint – and now they're the stars of an art exhibition

<ul class="summary-list"><li>OpenAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, just made its DALL-E image generator open to the public.</li><li>Artists say they work for years on their portfolios and people can now make copycat images in seconds.</li></ul><p>Greg Rutkowski is an artist with a distinctive style: He's known for creating fantasy scenes of dragons and epic battles that fantasy games like Dungeons and Dragons have used. </p><p>He said it used to be "really rare to see a similar style to mine on the internet."</p><p>Yet if you search for his name on Twitter, you'll see plenty of images in his exact style — that he didn't make.</p><p>Rutkowski has become one of the most popular names in AI art, despite never having used the technology himself.</p><p>People are creating thousands of artworks that look like his using programs called AI-image generators, which use artificial intelligence to create original artwork in minutes or even seconds after a user types in a few words as directions.</p><p>Rutkowski's name has been <a href="https://lexica.art/?q=Greg+Rutkowski">used to generate around 93,000 AI images</a> on one image generator, Stable Diffusion — making him a far more popular search term than Picasso, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Vincent van Gogh in the program.</p><p>"I feel like something's happening that I can't control," Rutkowski, who is based in Poland, told Insider. It's a bit like searching Google Images, except the results are brand-new artworks created using the text in the user's search terms as instructions.</p><p>One of the most common prompts is to use the name of an artist to create something mimicking their style.</p><p>"People are pretending to be me," Rutkowski said. "I'm very concerned about it; it seems unethical."</p><p>Simon Stålenhag, an artist and designer based in Sweden, told Insider that although he isn't against AI-generated art in principle, he does take issue with how some people are using the new technology. </p><p>"People are selling prints made by AI that have my name in the title," he said. "Something like — 'Rusty Robot in a field in the style of Simon Stålenhag' — which is a super aggressive way of using this technology."</p><p>He's seen people be hostile when they share an AI image in his style on social media. "People have tagged me and said that they're gonna make me lose my job or something like that, they're really harsh and aggressive," he said.</p><p>He believes AI-image generators are "not in the hands of artists right now. It's in the hands of early adopters of tech."</p><p>Rutkowski, who uses both digital tools and classic oil on canvas for his work, is worried that this explosion in imitation art means his style — which has seen him land deals with Sony and Ubisoft — might lose its value.</p><p>"We work for years on our portfolio," Rutkowski said. "Now suddenly someone can produce tons of images with these generators and sign them with our name."</p><p>"The generators are being commercialized right now, so you don't know exactly what the final output will be of your name being used over the years," he said.</p><p>"Maybe you and your style will be excluded from the industry because there'll be so many artworks in that style that yours won't be interesting anymore."</p><h2><strong>An explosion in imitation</strong></h2><p>More and more consumers are using AI-image generators.</p><p>OpenAI, which Elon Musk cofounded in 2015, made its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-dall-e-online-ai-image-generator-art-2022-9">DALL-E image generator</a> open to the public in September. Before lifting the waitlist, <a href="https://openai.com/blog/dall-e-now-available-without-waitlist/">OpenAI said the program</a> already had more than 1.5 million users.</p><p>Liz DiFiore, the president of the Graphic Artist Guild, an organization that supports designers, illustrators, and photographers across the US, said the ease with which AI can copy styles could cause financial fallout for artists.</p><p>"Artists spend a lot of time throughout their career, and make a lot of income, on being able to license their images and being sought after specifically for their style," she said.</p><p>"So if an AI is copying an artist's style and a company can just get an image generated that's similar to a popular artist's style without actually going to artists to pay them for that work, that could become an issue."</p><p>US copyright law only protects artists against the reproduction of their actual artworks — not from someone else mimicking their style.</p><p>Some of the most popular AI-image generators — which include DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion — have policies in place to prevent consumers from using their products in certain ways. OpenAI, for example, <a href="https://labs.openai.com/policies/content-policy">prohibits the use of images of celebrities</a> or politicians.</p><p>All three programs block users from creating "harmful content" by filtering things like nudity and <a href="https://midjourney.gitbook.io/docs/content-and-moderation-policy">gore</a>.</p><p>Insider asked representatives from DALL-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion if they have any measures in place to prevent images being created that mimic the style of working artists.</p><p>A representative for Stable Diffusion said the company was working on an opt-out system for artists who don't want AI programs to be trained on their work.</p><p>The spokesperson added that an artist's name "is only one component of a diverse set of instructions to the AI model that creates a unique style that is different from an individual artist's style."</p><p>Representatives for Open AI did not specify any measures in place to protect living artists but said the company would seek artists' perspectives as it expanded access to DALL-E.</p><p>Midjourney didn't respond to Insider's questions.</p><h2><strong>AI data training</strong></h2><p>AI-image generators "train" by learning from large sets of images and captions. Representatives from OpenAI said both publicly available sources and images licensed by the company make up DALL-E's training data.  </p><p>Representatives for Stable Diffusion said the program uses web crawls to gather information and images. </p><p>Rutkowski thinks living artists should have been excluded from the databases that train the generators.</p><p>"I'm not against the AI overall, I think it's a good technology. But I think they should have excluded artists' names from the program," he said.</p><p>Another designer and illustrator, RJ Palmer, <a href="https://twitter.com/arvalis/status/1558623546879778816">dubbed</a> the generators actively "anti-artist" on Twitter because he said they are "explicitly trained on current working artists."</p><p>Artists can check if their work has been used to train AI programs on a website called Have I Been Trained, which the German artist Mat Dryhurst and the American sound artist Holly Herndon created. </p><p>The pair have been working on tools to help artists opt-out of AI data-training sets. The website filters through around 5.8 billion images that are in the dataset Stable Diffusion and Midjourney use to train their programs.</p><p>Other artists feel they should have been asked for consent for their images to be scraped for the data used to train AI generators.</p><p>Stålenhag said it would have been nice to be asked if he could be included in the training data, but said it was an inevitable consequence of putting art on the internet. </p><p>"I see it as being very similar to how artists already work," he told Insider. </p><p>"We do copy other people's ideas and styles and designs, and we take stuff," he said, noting that he also doesn't think AI art is good enough quality to be a "threat" at present.</p><p>"There's a hype around AI that I think is weird because I just don't think that it's very good," he said. "I don't see it as a threat because the visuals are not as good as what artists can create."</p><h2><strong>Copyright laws around AI images are murky</strong></h2><p>It's unclear whether copyright laws will protect the new artwork that AI programs generate.</p><p>"Copyright issues around AI is probably one of the biggest areas that we are focused on," DiFiore said, adding that it is still "a very gray area."</p><p>Some stock-image libraries, such as Getty Images, <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/21/23364696/getty-images-ai-ban-generated-artwork-illustration-copyright">have refused</a> to carry AI-generated artwork due to the uncertainty around copyright and commercial use.</p><p>A spokesperson for the US Copyright Office told Insider that works generated only by artificial intelligence lacked the human authorship necessary to support a copyright claim.</p><p>They said the office would not "knowingly grant registration to a work that was claimed to have been created solely by machine with artificial intelligence."</p><p>But it's unclear whether a person entering search prompts into a program to create an AI artwork counts as a human-AI collaboration.</p><p>Representatives for Stable Diffusion said while images created can be used for commercial offerings, the company wasn't able to say whether the images would be copyrightable. They added this decision was up to individual nations at the legislative level. </p><p>Representatives for OpenAI said they think images generated by their programs can be copyrighted for commercial reasons. </p><p>A spokesperson from OpenAI said: "When DALL-E is used as a tool that assists human creativity, we believe that the images are copyrightable. DALL-E users have full rights to commercialize and distribute the images they create as long as they comply with our content policy."<em>  </em></p><p>They added that "copyright law has adapted to new technology in the past and will need to do the same with AI-generated content."</p><p>Despite reservations, the technology's potential also excites many artists.</p><p>Giles Christopher, a London-based commercial photographer specializing in food and drink, uses DALL-E and other AI-image generators to experiment with portraits and create artificial backgrounds for some of his commercial shots.</p><p>"I've come out with images that you wouldn't question are photographs," he said. "Some of the arguments I've had from photographers are that the images are looking too good."</p><div type="image" title="AI portrait of an old man with character" height="2000" width="1333" msid="94900134" hostid="261"></div><p>He thinks the genie is out of the bottle when it comes to AI, and that artists should look for ways to include it into their work. </p><p>"I have friends in the industry who will storm out of the room if I even bring up using AI," he said. </p><p>But he's keeping an open mind. "I'm still on the fence. It's like keeping your enemies close," Christopher said.</p>

It also found that on average, every newly installed robot displaces 1.6 manufacturing workers.</p><p>While other industries are beginning to experiment with automation, manufacturing jobs are most vulnerable in the immediate future. China leads the charge in automating jobs: By 2030, the country will have 14 million industrial robots in use. Technological advancements have pushed down the average unit price of robots by 11% between 2011 to 2016. The US has already lost 260,000 due to automation since the turn of the century, according to the report.</p><p>The report analyzed data from the <a href="https://ifr.org/">International Federation of Robots</a>, and focused on countries that account for more than 90% of industrial robot installations: EU nations, US, Japan, South Korea, China, and more. The IFR uses survey data from robot suppliers in 50 countries tracked from 1994 to 2014.</p><h2>The bigger robotic picture</h2><p>Researchers have been telling us about how automation is going to gobble up jobs for years: </p><ul><li>The <a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_Future_of_Jobs_2018.pdf">World Economic Forum</a> predicted that half of companies would reduce their full-time workforce by 2022.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pwc-artificial-intelligence-wont-destroy-all-jobs-2018-7">PWC</a> estimated roughly 7 million jobs in the UK would be displaced by 2037. <br /><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/robots-replace-up-to-800-million-people-job-by-2030-2017-11"></a></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/robots-replace-up-to-800-million-people-job-by-2030-2017-11">McKinsey</a> projected 800 million people worldwide would be out of a job by 2030.</li></ul><p>OE's findings differ in that they target how the manufacturing sector specifically would suffer. Robots have 5 million American manufacturing jobs since 2000, accounting for a decline of nearly 30% of these jobs, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/there-is-a-huge-hole-in-trumps-promise-to-bring-back-us-manufacturing-jobs-2017-3">Business Insider's Pedro Nicolaci da Costa</a> reported.</p><p>The report also has implications for manufacturing policy, as President Trump <a href="https://projects.propublica.org/graphics/trump-job-promises">promised</a> to bring back these jobs during his campaign. <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/trump-trade-tariffs-manufacturing-hits-slowest-pace-since-2016-2019-7-1028321821">Manufacturing activity fell in the US to a two-year low in June</a>, in part due to the ongoing trade war with China. </p><p>Still, the Trump administration has been slow to acknowledge AI's impact on the American workforce. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin once said he's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-administration-robot-automation-2017-5">"not worried at all"</a> about robots' impact on employment. </p><p>"The repercussions of robotization are interconnected and complex, but the growth in robotics is inevitable," the OE report says. Robots are on their way to taking 20 million manufacturing jobs

"Robotics are here."</span></p><p>There is a great deal of evidence that both robotics and AI could displace huge swaths of the American workforce in the next couple of decades.</p><p>During a March 24 Axios event, however, Mnuchin <a href="https://www.axios.com/treasury-secretary-mnuchin-interviews-with-axios-live-updates-2327865447.html">told the site's cofounder Mike Allen</a> that the threat of automation taking away jobs was negligible, and that the two-decade timetable grossly exaggerated what was likely "50 to 100 more years away."</p><p><a href="https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/sites/default/files/docs/ERP_2016_Chapter_5.pdf">Studies</a> <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/business-technology/our-insights/four-fundamentals-of-workplace-automation">have forecasted</a> a spike in unemployment if the US doesn't take steps to help workers as their jobs are scooped up by robots or AI. A 2015 <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/business-technology/our-insights/four-fundamentals-of-workplace-automation">McKinsey report</a>, for instance, found that existing technology could feasibly replace 45% of work activities.</p><p>Mnuchin seemed unfazed by that data. "I'm not worried at all," he said back in March. "In fact, I'm optimistic."</p><p>During his recent testimony, Mnuchin clarified that certain forms of AI were on the administration's radar screen. "<span>Self-driving cars are something that are gonna be here soon," he said. And during his presidency, he has pledged to work with large corporations to keep jobs within US borders.</p><p>But as Business Insider's Pedro da Costa <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/there-is-a-huge-hole-in-trumps-promise-to-bring-back-us-manufacturing-jobs-2017-3">has said</a>, many of the jobs Trump wants to bring back have not been shipped overseas - they've been lost to the cheap, consistent labor of robots. Citing 'Star Wars,' Trump's treasury secretary revises claim about robots displacing humans

As technology continues to transform Wall Street, this handholding has been viewed as one of the safest from automation. </p><p>At Morgan Stanley, however, robots are being used to support human advisers with these types of tasks, said Andy Saperstein, co-head of the New York-based bank's wealth management unit. </p><p>Saperstein, speaking at the Deutsche Bank Global Financial Services conference on Tuesday, said Morgan Stanley is  leveraging artificial intelligence to generate customized emails for its 16,000 financial advisers to send to clients when the markets go berserk. </p><p>In addition to giving the firm's perspective of the market, those emails will show how a major event, like Brexit, might impact a client's overall portfolio.</p><p>"It solves a big problem when clients call up really worried," Saperstein said.</p><p>The technology is intended to take over rote tasks for financial advisers and free them up to focus on more sophisticated client needs - not to replace flesh and blood advisers, bank executives have said. </p><p>What's striking, however, is that the robots will add their own personal touch to the financial advisers' emails. Morgan Stanley is using AI to send personalized messages to clients when the markets spiral into chaos

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>A great deal of evidence suggests robotics and artificial intelligence will displace huge swaths of the American workforce in the next couple decades.</p><p>But the Trump administration - which has made job creation a central focus - doesn't seem to think it's a problem.</p><p>On March 24, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin <a href="https://www.axios.com/treasury-secretary-mnuchin-interviews-with-axios-live-updates-2327865447.html">told Axios co-founder Mike Allen</a> that the threat of robot automation taking away jobs was "not even on our radar screen," and that the two-decade timetable grossly exaggerates what is likely "50 to 100 more years away."</p><p><a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/ERP_2016_Book_Complete%20JA.pdf">Report</a> after <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/business-technology/our-insights/four-fundamentals-of-workplace-automation">report</a> has forecasted a big spike in unemployment if the US doesn't take steps to help workers as they get displaced from jobs that are scooped up by robots or AI. A 2015 <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/business-functions/business-technology/our-insights/four-fundamentals-of-workplace-automation">McKinsey report</a>, for instance, concluded that existing technology could feasibly replace 45% of jobs right now.</p><p>Mnuchin seemed unfazed by that data.</p><p>"I'm not worried at all," he said, later adding, "In fact, I'm optimistic."</p><p>During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly encouraged companies to "Buy American, hire American." But users&#xa0;won't be speaking to a person, they'll be talking to "Tay," Microsoft's new bot that's powered by artificial intelligence.<p>The easiest way to converse with Tay is on Twitter. It's&#xa0;at <a href="https://twitter.com/TayandYou">@tayandyou</a>. All users&#xa0;have to do is tweet at it&#xa0;as if it were a real&#xa0;person&#xa0;and it'll&#xa0;tweet back in a kind of internet patois that doesn't sound like it's coming from a computer.&#xa0;</p><p>Tay is also chatting <a href="http://mspoweruser.com/microsofts-chatbot-tay-goes-live-twitter-groupme-kik/">on apps like Snapchat, Kik, and Groupme</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>Here's a sample of what Tay likes to talk about:&#xa0;</p><p><div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;<div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;<div></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">&#xa0;Tay speaks like a teen because that's how <a href="https://www.tay.ai/#about">Microsoft's research division built it</a>. According to Microsoft, Tay is "targeted at 18 to 24 year olds in the US."&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">"Tay is an artificial intelligence chat bot designed to engage and entertain through casual and playful conversation," Microsoft explains. Tay's Twitter profile, likely written by a human, describes it as "the official account of Tay, Microsoft's A.I. fam from the internet that's got zero chill!"&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">Microsoft says Tay can tell a joke, play a game like "would you rather," tell stories, and rate pictures that you send it.&#xa0;</p><p class="embed-spacer">Tay isn't the first Twitter bot to sound like a teen. Previously, <a href="http://www.ibtimes.com/twitter-suspends-beloved-teenage-bot-olivia-1916467">a bot called Olivia Taters</a> gained some notoriety by tweeting&#xa0;like a teen, and&#xa0;people who remember using&#xa0;AIM instant messaging might remember long conversations with a bot called Smarter Child.</p><p class="embed-spacer">But unlike previous attempts at teenage bots, Tay was developed using a learning algorithm that gets better the more data it receives. The more data Tay recieves, the better its responses should get. Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-launches-ai-chat-bot-tay-ai/">compares Tay to XiaoIce</a>, a chatbot Microsoft developed for the Chinese market that proved to &#xa0;be extremely&#xa0;popular. Microsoft just launched an artificial intelligence bot for teens that has 'no chill'

Apple shares are up 15% in the past three months, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/05/buy-apple-because-it-will-add-100-billion-to-its-buyback-dividends-plan-citi.html">buoyed</a> by a massive capital return program announced in April. </p><p>In its fiscal 3rd quarter earnings, which cover the three months ending in June, Apple will reveal whether the iPhones it launched last September are enjoying sustained demand, or whether the more expensive $1,000 iPhone X fizzled in the slow season after last year's all-important holiday quarter. Generally, Apple's spring quarter is its slowest both in terms of revenue and iPhone sales. </p><p>"Our checks suggest demand for iPhone 8 and 8 Plus remain seasonal while iPhone X inventory has normalized and older models continue to do well in emerging markets," Citi analyst Jim Suva wrote earlier this month.</p><p>Wall Street is looking for Apple to report revenue of $52.3 billion, up 15% year-over-year, and earnings per share of $2.16. </p><p>But investors will also keep a close eye on commentary and details buried in the report that might suggest where Apple is going, especially this fall, when it's expected to launch new iPhones. </p><p>Here's what Wall Street is looking for:</p><h2>iPhone sales</h2><p>Given that the iPhone makes up the majority of Apple's revenue, it's only logical that investors would want to know how many iPhones were shipped and the average price they were sold for.</p><p>Even a small difference in that number can change Apple's earnings from a good day to a bad day for the stock. </p><p>Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty, for example, is expecting Apple to say that it shipped 39.8 million iPhones in the June quarter, underneath the consensus estimate for about 41.8 million iPhones shipped. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ng Han Guan/AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Services</h2><p>But increasingly, investors are looking at Apple's services - the money it makes selling subscriptions to people who own iPhones - as the primary driver of what could make Apple a more valuable company than it already is. </p><p>"Given iPhone results matter less late in a cycle ... we expect investors to focus increasingly on Services results as a sign of whether Apple's installed base monetization efforts can drive overall company growth despite declining device revenue," Huberty wrote in a July 23 note. </p><p>Apple defines services as revenue it gets from iCloud, Apple Music, App Store, iTunes, and AppleCare, and sometimes Apple comments on its growth, especially during slower quarters. </p><p>"Services is an increasingly important piece of the AAPL story and a major driver of gross margins," RBC analyst Amit Daryanani wrote in a recent note. "The segment currently accounts for ~15% of revenues and is on track to become a ~$50B business by 2020."</p><p>Huberty is looking for Services to grow 32% year-over-year, which would be a big jump. </p><h2>China</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The Chinese market remains the area where Apple could see the greatest growth, given the country's growing middle class.</p><p>But Apple also faces <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-market-share-in-china-2018-4">intense competition from domestic makers of Android phones,</a> as well as regulatory issues in the middle kingdom. So far, Cook and his managing director of China, Isabel Ge Mahe, have managed to successfully navigate the tricky regulatory landscape. </p><p>"China production data (int'l down 29% in F3Q) implies Apple's Greater China sales growth will slow from 21% in F2Q," Nomura's Jeffery Kvaal wrote. </p><h2>The upcoming cycle</h2><p>Often guidance for Apple's fiscal 4th quarter will include a little bit of sales from Apple's newest phones, which are typically announced in September and go on sale shortly afterward.</p><p>However, one week of sales isn't usually enough to know whether the new product cycle is going to be a hit or not. That hasn't stopped analysts from speculating that if Apple's guidance is strong, it could be a hint that the company expects a big iPhone launch.</p><p>"While all eyes will be on Apple's will FQ4 guidance, we note that historically, revenue guidance for FY Q4 has *not* been a helpful predictor of the strength of the forthcoming cycle," Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote. </p><h2>Apple's passion projects</h2><p>Apple is working on several new technologies that could unlock huge new markets: self-driving cars, augmented reality, and health and medicine.</p><p>All of these "special projects" and "technology investigations" are secretive. But sometimes, Apple officials during an earning call provide commentary that suggest that they see them as big projects and can guide expectations for increased revenue in the future. </p><p>"In our opinion, revenue contribution can be significant even without Apple introducing any dedicated AR hardware," Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote in a note. "Specifically, we estimate that AR can add $1 billion revenue by end of fiscal 2020 from App Store downloads alone."</p><h2>If Apple's data privacy policies are showing up on the bottom line</h2><p>Apple has made data privacy a key marketing and engineering priority for the company, and it started to pay off earlier this year when Facebook came under fire for allowing companies like Cambridge Analytica to access people's data. </p><p>CEO Tim Cook even took a few barely veiled shots at Facebook. </p><p>So some analysts, like D.A. Davidston analyst Tom Forte, are looking for "comments by management on the importance of data privacy and its efforts to address that in the updated versions of its operating systems."</p><h2>The trade war</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Reuters reported earlier this month that Apple's Apple Watch may be affected by tariffs proposed by the Trump administration. </p><p>This could lead to an increase in the price of the Watch or a decrease in Apple's margins.</p><p>Analysts will be watching to see if Apple leadership provides any commentary on how the simmering trade war could affect any Apple products. </p><p>"If there were any incremental tariffs invoked, we believe Apple would pass that cost to consumers and our view is any price increase is not a positive for demand," Citi's Suva wrote.</p><p>"We also note iPhone is not in the July 2018 tariff list for 818 goods," he continued.</p><h2>How Siri fits into the company </h2><p>Earlier this month, Apple announced that it had consolidated its Siri department under one head: John Giannandrea, which the iPhone giant hired away from Google earlier this year. </p><p>This could signal a bigger emphasis on Siri and artificial intelligence in general at the company.</p><p>Commentary from Cook or CFO Luca Maestri could clarify the reasoning and hopes for the personnel change. </p><p>"While we still see Apple playing catch up with Amazon's Alexa and Google's digital assistant, we are encouraged by the April 2018 addition of John Giannandrea (Google's former chief of search and AI) to bolster Siri," Forte, the Davidson analyst, wrote. </p><h2>Any sign people are hanging onto their iPhones longer </h2><p>One bear case for Apple is that people replace their iPhones less often as the technology gets more mature. The closer replacement rates edge to three years instead of two years, the stronger the case gets. </p><p>"iPhone replacement rates have normalized over the past few years in the 2.5-year range after being as low as 2.2 years on the iPhone 6 cycle," BMO Capital Markets analyst Tim Long wrote.
