After a wait of two years, India is all set to test its <keyword id="59897" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Agni-V">Agni-V</keyword> intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in its final operational configuration from <keyword id="6588220" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wheeler-Island">Wheeler Island</keyword> off Odisha.<br />
<br /> According to the sources, preparations were on in full swing to launch the <keyword id="174323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nuclear-capable">nuclear-capable</keyword> Agni-V from its canister on a launcher truck towards December-end or early January.<br />

"There were some minor technical snags in Agni-V, which required tweaking of its internal battery and electronic configurations after its last test in January 2015," a source tod TOI.<br />
<br /> However, India wanted to exercise some strategic restraint while making a bid to join the 48-country Nuclear Suppliers Group, which China thwarted earlier this year. However, India somehow managed to join the 34-nation <keyword id="471445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Missile-Technology-Control-Regime">Missile Technology Control Regime</keyword> ( MTCR), as also ink a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Japan.<br />

The missile is capable of striking even the northernmost parts of China, is in itself significant. "This will be the final test of the three-stage Agni-V, which will be tested for its full range, before the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) begins its user trials," the source told TOI.<br />
<br /> The tri-Service SFC, established in 2003 to manage <keyword id="3956387" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indias-nuclear-arsenal">India's nuclear arsenal</keyword>, will conduct at least two tests before the missile is produced in adequate numbers for induction.<br />

India to test Agni-V ICBM missile, capable of striking China

China is worried over India’s successful test of Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile and is planning to drag the issue to <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> Security Council. Responding to it, India said its strategic capabilities were not targeted against any particular country and while it abides by all applicable international obligations, it expects others to do the same.<br />

India's strategic autonomy and growing engagement contributes to strategic stability," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.<br />
<br /> Earlier, Chinese Foreign Ministry said it hoped that India's test-firing of the nuclear-capable Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile or ICBM, that could cover all of China, complied with <keyword id="55859" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN-Security-Council">UN Security Council</keyword> rules and safeguarded <keyword id="52011" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Asia">South Asia</keyword>'s strategic balance.<br />

However, she also said that the two nations are "not rivals for competition but partners for cooperation", she took exception to media reports that the successful test of Agni-V was meant to target China<br />

China always maintains that preserving the strategic balance and stability in South Asia is conducive to peace and prosperity of regional countries and beyond."<br />

Agni-V was successfully test-fired recently. It is the country's most lethal nuclear-capable inter-continental ballistic missile with a range of over 5,000 km that covers entire China which may also pave the way for user trial of the weapons system and its eventual induction into the Strategic Forces Command (SFC).<br />

The test also marks a significant step in India's military development amid tensions with China and Pakistan.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/agni-5-nuclear-capable-ballistic-missile-successfully-test-fired-1801610">missile test was conducted</a> on an island off India's east coast, flying for 19 minutes and covering more than 3,000 miles. It was the fifth such test and the third consecutive one firing the missile from a canister on a road-mobile launcher, the Indian Ministry of Defense said. All five tests have been successful.</p><p>The ministry said "all objectives" of the latest test were met and it "reaffirms the country's indigenous missile capabilities and further strengthens our credible deterrence."</p><p>The Agni 5 is the most advanced in the Agni series, part of a program that began in the 1980s. It has a range of more than 3,100 miles and puts India <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/18/world/asia/india-ballistic-missile-icbm.html?smid=tw-share&amp;_r=0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">among countries</a> like the US, China, and Russia that have access to intercontinental ballistic missiles. China's navy, its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-troops-to-overseas-base-operational-security-concerns-for-us-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">submarines in particular</a>, is increasingly active in the Indian Ocean, especially around the Malacca Strait, through which the country passes about 80% of its fuel supplies.</p><p>India has expanded its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/india-china-more-us-made-sub-hunting-planes-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-submarine-warfare capabilities</a> and its acquisition of military hardware, like warships and fighter jets. It is also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/india-china-more-us-made-sub-hunting-planes-2018-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">looking to boost</a> its domestic military industry through partnerships with international firms. Some parts of its missile program, however, have <a href="https://theprint.in/2017/12/24/setback-for-indian-missile-programme-two-failures-in-a-week-submarine-version-stuck/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">faced setbacks</a> in recent weeks.</p><h2>Advances in India's missile technology</h2><p>With the Agni 5, New Delhi is now able to hit targets in most of China - including major cities on the country's east coast. The missile's mobile-deployment capacity also makes it harder to track and boosts India's second-strike capabilities. Its reentry vehicle may also <a href="http://www.delhidefencereview.com/2018/01/18/successful-pre-induction-trial-of-indias-agni-v-intercontinental-ballistic-missile-takes-it-closer-to-deployment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mitigate</a> ballistic-missile defenses being developed by China.</p><p>"If there are hostilities, and if there are contingencies, then India has something which can deter China or at least make China think twice," Nitin A. Russia provided 65% of the missile's components, while India supplied the majority of the rest.</p><p>The Brahmos is reportedly <a href="https://theaviationist.com/2017/11/23/india-successfully-test-fires-fastest-cruise-missile-from-aircraft/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">able to carry</a> a 660-pound warhead up to 250 miles, traveling at speeds up to Mach 3. That combination of speed, range, and explosive power makes the missile a threat to large surface ships, like aircraft carriers, as well as to fortified targets on land. Its speed and low altitude may also mean that anti-missile defense, especially shipboard ones, <a href="https://theaviationist.com/2017/11/23/india-successfully-test-fires-fastest-cruise-missile-from-aircraft/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">would have trouble</a> intercepting it. <br />"Just a few minutes ago, our scientists shot down a live satellite on the LEO (Low Earth Orbit). They achieved it in just three minutes," he said without clarifying to which country the satellite shot down belonged to. The <keyword id="1020427" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anti-satellite">anti-satellite</keyword> missiles were developed in India.<br /><br />However, Modi went on to reassure the international community that India will only use this new capability for its own security and development and that no international covenant has been broken in today's action.<br /><br />Anti-satellite missiles are space weapons designed to incapacitate or destroy satellites for strategic military purposes. For example, to bring down spy satellites. China successfully tested its own anti-satellite missile in 2007 after four failed attempts.<br /><br />"India has demonstrated a deterrence capability," space scientist Ajay Lele told the state-owned network Doordarshan. "It is unlikely that India would have raised the ante against any other country at this stage," he said adding that the scientists must have shot down its own satellite. <br /><br />An outer space treaty does not allow using weapons of mass destruction in the space, Lele explained.  "A similar test by China in 2007 has left behind a lot of debris which is still floating around," Lele said.<br /><br />With the successful test launch of the Agni-V missile in 2012, India demonstrated the capability and technology to launch anti-satellite weapons but the government had not approved the development of such systems, former DRDO chief V K Saraswat <a href="http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/can-show-antisatellite-capability-if-govt-gives-nod-drdo-chief/939594/0" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">told the Indian Express</a> in April 2012.<br /><br />"Today, India has established itself as a space power," Modi said in a televised address on Wednesday (march 27). "Until now, only  US, Russia and China could claim the title. India is the fourth country to achieve this feat," he added.<br /><br />India has a variety of satellites that are contributing to different sectors like weather, broadcasting, navigation, education, agriculture, aside from security.
