Where does it all come from?Music's just always been a huge part of my life. My family really pushed me to tap into music. I started taking piano lessons and violin lessons when I was 3.My realm as a youngster with music was super small. It was Christian music and classical music and some afrobeats too. And when I say afrobeats, I mean people from the seventies like Fella Kuti vibes. Then, when I grew older, I got really into a mesh of rock music, like metal music, but also drill, more specifically Chicago drill music, and rap music.From there, I just started tapping around with my own sound, trying to sing and use shitty autotune at first, and it's ended up developing to what we have today.Who, or what, would you say is your biggest musical influence?I'd have to say myself because, at the end of the day, I'm just like making things that I enjoy. Of course, other people's influences come to me, but it's always me at the foundation. So yeah, I don't know. I don't know who my favorite person is besides myself. That's such a Leo answer, but that's all I got.Leo, as in the star sign? Yeah.Are you a believer in horoscopes and such then?I think it's cool and I think it's nice for conversation. Scientifically speaking, though, it's all cap. Listening to "Princess Forever," I felt a bit like I was on a journey through space, especially on "Technicolor Lover."That's the vibes I was going for. I wanna take people to a new world with my music for sure. That song specifically, I made that with my homey, Josiah. We thrifted this really old synth and started playing around with it and it made this super weird sound, and I was just obsessed with it. So I just put it all over the song.I really like science. I really like just learning about astrology and physics. That was definitely the vibe for this album.What inspired you to come up with the character Princess Forever?When the pandemic was dwindling down and you could go out more, I was starting to feel the surrealism of being back outside, which then led me down the path of the surrealism of just being an African in America in this day and age, and what it's like being a queer person and all that type of shit.It just led me down that path, and it just made me feel like I was in my... I was an alien type shit. So I guess that's where like the idea of space comes from and wanting to travel and discover new things. A place where you can be yourself with other people who feel the same way.You mentioned your experiences as a queer person served as inspiration...When I was making this album, I was coming into a very transitional period in my life. I had essentially just fully transitioned, like changed my name, got surgery. Physically, I feel very different than how I once was, which is a good thing. I feel a lot more confident.But with that, I had to also really work on changing my mindset, focusing on what femininity is to me now as a new changed person type shit, and accepting that femininity and embracing it and exploring it.This is a very femme album. It's so much about love. It's very pink. It's very happy. That was definitely a huge inspiration, me transitioning, and transitioning into who I really am.You're now taking the album on tour. How do you plan on portraying its story on stage?The set design is gonna be sick as fuck. The lighting is gonna be sick. The outfits, with me and the band, everything is gonna be very theatrical. It's gonna be really cool.I want people to feel like they're at a show, because I feel like a lot of times, a lot of new artists aren't putting on shows — they're just pulling up singing, and then dipping. I'm like, 'No.' Motherfuckers spent maybe their whole check, maybe half their check, to see their favorite artists. So I really want to give them the best show that I can provide.Lastly, if you could work with one artist you haven't already, who would it be and why?I always tell people that I really want a Tyler, the Creator beat. On 2020's "Dark Lane Demo Tapes," he took influence from the UK drill scene. 2022's "Honestly, Nevermind," meanwhile, was a house music album with elements of amapiano.Given that <a href="https://www.insider.com/ti-interview-trap-muzik-20-diddy-kanye-west-beauty-salon-2023-8">trap music</a> is now at the forefront of popular music, it's no surprise that the genre plays a leading role on "Dogs."We're introduced to trap Drake as soon as the album begins, with the Canadian rapper speaking crudely of a former flame over rolling triplets on "Virginia Beach.""Pussy ain't makin' me tweak, ended up stayin' a week," he raps."She pretty but ghetto, pretty but rough, just like Virginia Beach." Themes of money, haters, and women (including what appears to be a <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2023/10/08/rihanna-dance-asap-rocky-35th-birthday-drake-diss/">thinly veiled shot</a> at Rihanna) continue to dominate up until track nine — with the exception of "Amen" featuring Teezo Touchdown — as Drake becomes more aggressive in his delivery. The beats follow suit with each song."Shout' to my ex, I'm her lifesaver / My Glocky, it sit on the night table / You light on the waist like a lightsaber," he spits on "IDGAF."By track nine, "Slime You Out" featuring <a href="https://www.insider.com/sza-brazilian-butt-lift-wanted-really-fat-behind-less-gym-2023-6">SZA</a>, however, the album takes a turn.<h2>Enter the old Drake</h2>Drake never made it clear which iteration of him would be back on "For All the Dogs" — but the middle section of the album does that for us.Comprising mostly ambient, melodic tracks speckled with soul samples and piano riffs, tracks nine to 18 evoke memories of the Drake heard on his second and third studio albums, "Take Care" and "Nothing Was the Same."On "Bahamas Promises," Drake reflects on lost love ("I'm tired of your apologies / Broken pinky promises, you fucked up my Bahamas trip"), while on "Members Only" featuring PartyNextDoor, he sings of how highly he values loyalty in his sexual relationships ("You're too down with the gangy, you're one of my members").On the album's standout track, "8AM in Charlotte," Drake touches on everything from the joys of fatherhood to his long-standing dominance of the rap industry."Things get kinky after 15 years of dominance / That October sky is lookin' ominous, the money is autonomous," he raps. This Drake — introspective, insightful, and romantic — is the Drake that made him a global superstar and amassed an army of fans, both men and women, across the globe.But just as soon as the old Drake returns on "Dogs," he is gone.The album closes out with a confused succession of tracks, including a moombahton number featuring Bad Bunny ("Gently"), and an unlistenable Chicago house song featuring Sexyy Red and SZA ("Rich Baby Daddy").<h2>The album is at times good, but overall, frustrating</h2>None of Drake's previous seven studio albums — even the critically acclaimed "Take Care" — have been cohesive. None tell a story from start to finish, and all of them contain outlying tracks that don't fit."For All the Dogs" suffers the same problems.Top to bottom, it's not an easy listen and it feels as if it should be broken into three separate projects — one trap, one R&amp;B, and one of unreleased singles.At 23 tracks, the album is also too long, just like <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-you-missed-drake-album-scorpion-2018-6">2018's "Scorpion"</a> and 2021's <a href="https://www.insider.com/drake-certified-lover-boy-album-review-kanye-hip-hop-2021-9">"Certified Lover Boy."</a><div type="image" title="Rapper Drake performs onstage during &quot;Lil Baby &amp; Friends Birthday Celebration Concert&quot; at State Farm Arena on December 9, 2022 in Atlanta, Georgia." height="1333" width="2000" msid="104290852" hostid="261" sizebytes="93886"></div>Despite these issues, Drake does deliver some of his best work in recent years on "Dogs," most notably "Amen," Bahamas Promises," and "8AM in Charlotte," on which he both croons and raps over ethereal beats in a way no other rapper-cum-singer can.Had Drake decided to make a whole album in that vein, "Dogs" could have been what he promised — a return to the old him.Unfortunately, "Dogs" is instead a meandering record that lacks depth and can't decide what it wants to be, with Drake once again hopping on the trends du jour rather than owning his own distinctive sound.

From being the 2023 BMI Gospel Songwriter of the Year to earning multiple <a href="https://www.insider.com/grammy-awards-2023-nominees-winners-list-2022-11">Grammy nominations</a> at last year's awards ceremony, he's no stranger to hard work either.In a conversation earlier this summer, Bowe told Insider he was in Los Angeles when he got the call that he was nominated for music's biggest award."And then the call went from, 'a <a href="https://www.insider.com/grammy-award-winning-record-of-the-year-songs-every-year-2018-1">Grammy</a> to you have six nominations' and so it was definitely a shock," he continued. "But I feel like when you're focused and you're working towards a goal, sometimes you don't even know how well you're doing…I just kind of do what I think I'm called to do."That calling is what birthed<a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/0k2wJSus536g9a8w4AU0GG"> Bowe's new album, a self-titled project</a> with 14 songs that show the singer-songwriter's range and ability to easefully glide between genres. But after Maverick City Music suddenly announced they were putting their relationship with Bowe<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci_sAw1M4Gq/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;ig_rid=f22e1d94-c14e-4a77-b811-2e51a5522e58" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> on "pause" in September 2022</a>, it shocked the music industry and left many of the group's fans wondering why. In a statement, the collective said Bowe exhibited "behavior that is inconsistent with our core values and beliefs." Due to the statement's ambiguity, and a social media break from Bowe, it left fans to speculate exactly what happened. Some reports pointed to Bowe releasing then deleting a <a href="https://protestia.com/2022/10/05/exclusive-dante-bowe-released-from-maverick-city-music-after-accidentally-leaking-nude-video/">nearly-nude photo to his Instagram Stories</a> as a reason why.Insider spoke to Bowe about the real reason behind his departure from Maverick City Music, if he has any regrets, and his plans for the future. How did that group come about and did you always see yourself as a part of a group? I never really saw myself as a part of a group. So we were going to pitch all these songs to these artists and it turned into…let's record these songs. So in the beginning it was just two of us, and then it went from two of us to the Maverick you see today. And I'm grateful that I was a part of the beginning stages of this collective and I think we did well. What exactly caused your split from Maverick City? We weren't working together that much in the first place, and not for any other reason other than my career was taking off. I had a number one single and like you said, I had all these Grammy Awards and I was getting plaques and all these different things. And I was on tour actually. Do you want to respond or expand a little bit on that?Yeah, I think that was pertaining to the photo, but that was not the real reason we stopped working together. The real reason we stopped working together is because I had already been doing my own thing. And [there's] just a lot of different things that go into this job called music and it's a lot more complex than me actually singing and writing songs — when you think about the deals being made and the money being made and the success that's happening. And I wasn't contributing as much as I used to contribute to the group anyway, and I feel like that was just their door [or moment] to say that I wasn't aligned with their core values when we were aligned in that season and we stopped being aligned after I started doing my own thing. And I think I'm setting people free and also myself as well.Good things don't always come with just stars and rainbows. Sometimes it comes with trials and tribulations and I want people to know that it's not all perfect just because you see us on TV and you see us operating our gifts and talents. I want you to know the reality of it that it will cost you something. Is that something that you've learned through your Christianity, through therapy or a combination of both? Yeah, through my faith. I really do think the Lord has sharpened me in a way that I could never imagine. I couldn't imagine being the man I am today. …When chaos comes, sometimes there's a gift with it and I think in my case it was a great gift. I got a new team. And I think that wouldn't have happened if chaos didn't happen. Are you still in contact with anyone in the group? No. I'm completely on a different level. I'm working with different people. We have different teams now and I still wish them well, but we don't talk at all. No. There were a lot of people who came to your defense even though at the time it wasn't clear what was going on. How did that make you feel? I loved it. I love my supporters. The real Dante supporters understand the journey because they built me from the beginning and I really do appreciate that. I think I have gone out of my way to be as kind to everyone I've ever met. …And it felt so good to see some of my friends come to my defense and also some of my supporters and family come to my defense because it just shows you that you've done good by people and people really trust your character and they trust your integrity.I'm glad to hear that you had such a great support system. If you had a message for your critics, what would you say? That's a good question. My message to my critics would be: look at the fruit of my life. ... I've had times where I want to give up and I want to say to any young person, there will be times you want to give up because you feel like this is going wrong and that is going wrong. In all reality, just look at your fruit, look at the fruit of your life. I feel like I've had incredible fruit from reaching millions with my faith,<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CrE8xM6Mfdv/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> to being a part of Vogue</a> and experiencing that whole thing, just in fashion, to my family and my friends who are still connected to me and love me dearly.<div type="image" title="A black-and-white photo of Dante Bowe" height="2779" width="2000" msid="103760413" hostid="261"></div>Do you have any regrets? I regret accidentally posting that photo. I regret some of my interviews. Not because I didn't believe what I said, it was very honest and truthful. And I hope that one day people can receive the truth and not judge people for the truth because at least they're telling you the truth. Because a lot of your favorites will not tell you what they're thinking in an interview. Usually, it's just something that PR has told them, different things of that sort…and I think sometimes, some things are better left unsaid. So what can we expect from you in the future, any future collaborations? I know you just released an album…Yeah, actually I have another album out and we're planning a tour and I'm very excited about it. I know a lot of people are ready to see it and then some people are like, "I don't know if I want to see it or not. I don't know what he's going to do." It's going to be the best thing I've ever created. It's going to be so positive, so good. …You're going to be educated after you leave this tour. Everything I do comes from God. I try to be as obedient as possible. I don't want to do it like everyone else has done it. Everything I put out there is the truth about who I am and I want people to accept me as a Christian and not think that I have to have the three-piece suits or I have to move a certain way in a video and that dictates if I'm a Christian or not. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Himanshu "Heems" Suri spoke to Insider about his work on launching a <keyword id="14223990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="punjabi" source="Orion">Punjabi</keyword> <keyword id="11898471" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="music" source="Orion">music</keyword> vertical at <keyword id="12689936" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="audiomack" source="Orion">Audiomack</keyword>.</li></ul>Earlier this month, the music <keyword id="11899360" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="streaming" source="Orion">streaming</keyword> platform Audiomack launched "<a href="https://audiomack.com/world/post/punjabi-music-playlists" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Audiomack Punjabi</a>," a new vertical aimed at amplifying the regional language genre that originated in India and Pakistan.In a phone interview last week, Insider spoke to Himanshu "Heems" Suri, who's leading the vertical and in part overseeing the platform's broader South Asian expansion.An artist of Punjabi-Indian descent, Suri gained notoriety as one-third of the hip-hop group Das Racist and has gone on to release music as a solo act and with the group Swet Shop Boys. Following a corporate stint at Spotify, he joined Audiomack in 2021 and is now the company's director of marketing and music strategy for the UK, Europe, Canada, and Asia. In the interview, Suri framed the vertical's launch as a continued effort on his part to "shine a light on Indian culture as a whole" within the corporate structures of digital streaming platforms (DSPs), and discussed the potential for Punjabi music to mirror the international emergence of genres like Afrobeats and Dancehall.This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.You came onto Audiomack around this time last year. What made that the move for you personally and professionally at the time?Yeah. I mean, it made a lot of sense for a lot of reasons. I had moved into the space of working at DSPs, trying to shine a light on Indian culture as a whole, and something both professionally and personally that drives me is the idea that Punjabi music deserves a place alongside hip-hop, Afrobeats, Dancehall, Latin, and some of the more popular genres of the world right now. And Audiomack already having that belief in those other genres, already kind of connecting diaspora dots, whether between Africa and the UK, or now in this sense, with what we're doing, India and the US, UK, and Canada — so seeing that they were already doing that. And then thirdly, seeing that folks were already engaging with Audiomack to listen to solely Punjabi music, versus other Indian genres. Those three things, I think. Actually, a fourth being: seeing how artist-forward they are, and what they kind of do to nurture artists early on in their career, having been an artist myself. So as you could see, there were a lot of reasons why it made sense to work together.You said in <a href="https://audiomack.com/world/post/why-punjabi-music" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a recent blog post</a> you've seen "how global DSPs often focus on Bollywood while regional language genres fall to the wayside." Could you expand on that as an animating factor in this for you?Sure. I mean, I think there's two things. For one, I believe in the power of regional languages, and I think with DSPs, we've seen a rise in how much people engage with regional language music, if they're provided more access to it. I've been at a larger DSP and I've worked on go-to-market content strategy for launching in local Indian markets. And, you know, I've seen and been a fan of Bollywood myself, but the industry up until this point has been very much driven by Bollywood North Indian film music. And so I think looking at the things, one, the rise of Punjabi and regional languages as a whole, and then two, specifically that folks that use Audiomack were listening from Punjab, were listening from Chandigarh, were listening and uploading from Punjab, from Chandigarh, from Ludhiana, and also from Delhi, where there's a large Punjabi culture. So those two things combined.What has your experience as an independent artist and label founder shown you about the process of breaking acts in the US in particular?As an artist, being American, it's easy to forget the kind of privilege you have of being a part of the largest music market. But being in a band with British artists, in Swet Shop Boys with two British artists, I've seen how important it is for artists outside the US to break in the US, how much they wanna do it and how much it means to their success. And I've seen that in the Punjabi community as well. And I've seen it in, not just that, the access to Punjabi listeners in the US and the UK and Canada and Australia, but also, for Western listeners and other markets that we've seen artists like Burna Boy and Bad Bunny break into. So it's extremely important for them.<div type="image" title="heems" height="750" width="750" msid="92287048" hostid="261"></div>And I think one thing that Audiomack does well is kind of like ... how do you say ... uh, expedite the pipeline to global audiences, with <a href="https://audiomack.com/trending-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Global Trending</a>. You know, it's much easier to be a Punjabi artist that's placed on a playlist alongside hip-hop, Afrobeats, and Latin and Dancehall at Audiomack, then it would be to come up through the playlist of your local market and then tap those charts and break into Western-facing global charts at the larger DSPs. So, I'd say in having our main music discovery be that Global Trending playlist, that's very genre-, culture-, geographically agnostic, that I think makes a difference to artists where they finally feel like, okay, they're breaking out of being pigeonholed in their local market.What do you think the emergence and the prominence of Afrobeats could foretell of the potential emergence or greater emergence of Punjabi music? How do you see that in this role in particular?Yeah. You know, actually, my career started asking this question, with what we referred to, or what some of us called, the "Despacito" moment. And previous waves of music from other cultures, and what we've seen with reggae and Latin in the past. But you know, it started for me asking, what can we do to have those moments in Indian culture, to move beyond <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wke0-lj2wzw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Punjabi MC and Jay-Z moment</a>. And so, from what we saw after "Despacito" with Latin, and at the same time I was working to sow those seeds for Punjabi, it was happening alongside me for Afrobeats and for Arab music as well. So I've always kind of viewed these genres as related in some ways.And I think I want to always emulate the success of those other genres, whether it's Latin or Afrobeats. And, you know, what I think has happened at Audiomack is they've seen organic audiences and growth in Africa. They listen to their users, both the creators and the listeners, and then they were able to build upon that. And I think what I'm trying to do here is very similar in that we listened to our users, you know, we saw where they are in India, we saw what they're listening to, what they're uploading, and we're trying to build on that organic growth. Already, we've seen a very significant growth in Canada of the Punjabi music genre on Audiomack, upwards of 500% over a year span.How do you personally discover music? What tools or resources, outside of, let's say, DSPs, do you go to?That's a good question. For me, a lot of it is playlists, and a lot of it is, again, Audiomack offering the genres that I'm interested in on one central spot. So for me, it is often that Global Trending playlist, especially 'cause those are artists often at the earlier stages of their career. But outside of Global Trending and what I see at Audiomack, honestly, the radio and on TV, Punjabi TV channels. And then, yeah, social media. I mean, just pretty much the places other people find music. But I would say working at DSPs, a lot of my music discovery is just roaming through the backends of computer systems and finding different things from different countries.I've seen the playlists that have kind of initiated this, and that there are more plans for discovery, but could you speak to what this vertical will look like moving forward in your mind?Sure. You know, I think the playlists are obviously a great place to start, and what we're doing there is a blend of playlists that incorporate traditional Indian instruments, playlists that are more hip-hop oriented, playlists that are more romantic or Senti, sentimental in nature, playlists representing women artists, and then playlists representing duets, which I'm really happy about. We've seen in Bollywood that the women singers' share of voice has decreased over time, and also duets, which used to be a cornerstone of Bollywood, have also decreased over time, in addition to Bollywood listening decreasing more recently as well. In Punjabi music, duets remain strong, and so we're happy to highlight that as well.And then from there, what we're really proud of, again, is about placing Punjabi songs alongside others on Global Trending. And <a href="https://audiomack.com/world/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Audiomack World</a> is something that I think is really amazing about Audiomack, and going back to the days where I was discovering music on blogs, to have something in-app where I can read a thousand words on an artist and then press a button and be listening to their music, and to have that kind of context of the artist that background is important. So to have more coverage of Punjabi artists on Audiomack World, this past week, we honored Sidhu Moose Wala, who passed away, was murdered, with a tribute to his work, his impact on not just Punjabi music, but global music, with a piece on Audiomack World. And so we're hoping to do more of that.Beyond that, we've launched <a href="https://www.instagram.com/audiomackpunjabi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IG</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/AudiomackPunjab" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter channels</a>. I think Audiomack does a great job of building community on their socials, and so we hope to do that as well on our social channels. And then, you know, the main thing, again, is being there for those artists, listening to them, seeing what they come up with with us. At Audiomack, some of the more recent kind of things we worked on that I'm proud to share with the Punjabi artist community specifically, is giving them access to Audiomack monetization program, uploading songs for free and being paid for it. Getting them access to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/audiomack-ceo-interview-new-supporters-feature-2021-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Supporters</a>, having them be able to reach out to their fans, have their fans buy tokens of support directly, and have the artist able to connect with the audience through private messaging, giving them access to things like concert tickets, meet-and-greets, and early access to music.Thirdly, the <a href="https://audiomack.com/world/post/audiomack-creator-app" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Creator App</a>. Having a place where artists can easily access their data, see how they're doing, where they're doing well, what playlists they're on. And then in addition, fourthly, I'd say the <a href="https://guide.audiomack.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Artist Guide</a>, which we recently launched, where artists can go, and beyond the glossary of terms, having a bunch of industry experts provide them with knowledge on things from publishing and legal and press and just where to start your career. So, you know, Audiomack is invested in being there with an artist from the beginning of their journey. Punjabi music is a huge genre, but globally, I feel that we're still at the beginning of this journey. And so part of it is just integrating that audience into these existing resources. And then part of it is just using those resources to build on what we've done with hip-hop and with Afrobeats, and apply the same resources and passion to Punjabi music.

Audiomack exec on launching 'Audiomack Punjabi,' a new music vertical aimed at amplifying the regional genre

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Watching, learning, and choreographing dances on TikTok has been popular since the app launched.</li><li>It's helped professional dancers land jobs or secure brand deals and companies recruit talent.</li></ul>This story is the first in a series examining TikTok's influence on the entertainment business. Welcome to the era of CultureTok.When dancer Neha Dharmapuraum joined TikTok, she never imagined it would lead to her Broadway debut.But that's exactly what happened when, in May 2022, two choreographers came across the 21-year-old's social-media account. Dharmapuraum, who had around <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@neha.dharma?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">70,000 followers</a> on the app at the time, had been putting Bollywood or Indian classical dance twists on popular trends. The choreographers encouraged the New York-based dancer to attend a South Asian workshop, where casting agents would be recruiting talent for Broadway-bound musical, "Come Fall In Love — The DDLJ Musical,'' based on the hit Bollywood movie.Dharmapuraum went to the workshop, was invited to audition, and landed a role in the production. It paid as much as she'd been earning in corporate marketing, which allowed her to quit that job and throw herself into 10-hour days rehearsing for the show."This app is a goldmine for artists like me who are still looking for their big break," Dharmapuraum said. "You never know who's scrolling through and might see your account — it's become my portfolio."TikTok first arrived on the global stage in 2018 after it <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-app-online-website-video-sharing-2019-7">merged</a> with the short-video app Musical.ly. The social-media platform, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has since surged in popularity, with an <a href="https://sensortower.com/blog/tiktok-downloads-3-billion">estimated billions of downloads worldwide</a> and 150 million US monthly active users, <a href="https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/150-m-us-users">according to the company</a>. Today, TikTok is so ubiquitous that it's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-hearing-congress-interrupting-grilling-ceo-ban-sale-2023-3">drawn scrutiny from lawmakers</a> in the US, Europe, India, and elsewhere, who worry the Chinese Communist Party could pressure the app into handing over sensitive user data or influence the content shown to users.However, the platform has also pushed pockets of the entertainment industry forward in big ways. As people watched and created TikToks for their amusement, many accounts dedicated their videos to one particular art form: dance.Some of the first TikTok creators to reach stardom were trained dancers like <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@charlidamelio?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Charli D'Amelio</a> and <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@addisonre?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Addison Rae.</a> They choreographed 15- or 30-second dances to popular sounds or songs, going viral as thousands of people recreated their movements.As TikTok has ascended, popular artists from <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/15/style/tiktok-memes-pop-stars.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dua Lipa</a> to <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/lizzo-about-damn-time-tiktok-dance-podcast-1356772/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lizzo</a> have integrated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-tiktok-is-changing-the-music-industry-marketing-discovery-2021-7">TikTok dances into their promotional strategies</a> and seen their songs go viral.TikTok creators, professional dancers, choreographers, and dance companies who spoke with Insider said the app had changed the way they choreographed, helped them earn more money, and given them access to career opportunities they otherwise wouldn't have had."People in really small towns or remote locations now have a shot at the same opportunities as dancers based in cities like Los Angeles or New York City," said Sharayu Mahale, a professional dancer with <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@sharayumahale?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">74,500 followers on TikTok</a>. "It levels the playing field and has made it more equitable for everyone."<div type="image" title="American Ballet Theatre" height="4186" width="6000" msid="99302433" hostid="261" sizebytes="797666"></div><h2>Dancers are landing jobs through the app and some companies are using it to recruit</h2>Before TikTok, many dancers relied mostly on in-person auditions or industry connections to secure lucrative jobs like dancing for a company or in TV commercials. Several artists and dance organizations said the social-media platform had revolutionized hiring and recruiting.Content creator Enola Bedard, who has <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@enola.bedard?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">16 million TikTok followers</a>, said she'd landed multiple jobs through TikTok over the past two years, including dancing with well-known artists like Daddy Yankee and Shania Twain. The LA-based dancer, who is from Quebec, Canada, posts her own choreographed sequences and hops on popular trends, usually in a hip-hop or contemporary style. Artists who want her to choreograph music videos or perform at live events now reach out via DMs on the app as well as through her management agency. "It's what I've dreamed of doing since I started dancing, and I honestly don't think it would have been possible without TikTok," she said. "I never expected my platform to blow up the way it did, but I'm so grateful it happened because of the opportunities I'm getting now." TikTok has also given dance companies and agents access to talent they otherwise wouldn't have known about.Dance agent Kuidee Davie, 28, said she had used TikTok to scout potential dancers for campaigns. When brands like Nike and Adidas reach out to ask for commercial performers they can work with, and her dancers are already booked, she scrolls TikTok to find others who would be well-suited."Now, most casting agents don't even look at your website or the portfolio you send in," Davie said. "They head straight to your Instagram and TikTok, so it's kind of like an artist's resume." Even dance companies like American Ballet Theatre have gotten on the bandwagon. It pays two senior dancers to film behind-the-scenes content for its <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@americanballettheatre?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">610,000 TikTok followers,</a> showing dancers at private rehearsals, warm-up classes, and breaking in their pointe shoes. The account, which has viewers from all over the world, has increased ABT's applicants for its summer intensive programs, according to the company."It's been an incredible way of showcasing what dancers really go through to prepare for the performances you see on stage," said Lourdes Liz, ABT's chief marketing officer. "It's definitely resulted in more people wanting to join us, so competition is steep now."<h2>TikTok has helped dancers find financial stability, thanks to brand deals and other projects</h2>Mahale said TikTok had also helped artists like her earn more money, especially during a dancer's "off season," which is the period when they are auditioning for new opportunities.She said she'd made around $1,500 from brand deals in the last three months, which Insider verified with documentation she provided. She said content creation is a better side gig for dancers than working in restaurants, or performing at weddings, because it allows them to make their own schedules and earn more for their time.For example, it usually takes Mahale — who's trained in Indian classical dance styles like Bharatnatyam, as well as Bollywood and hip-hop — an hour or two to choreograph a 20-second video, compared with eight hours to prepare for and perform at a wedding."TikTok has opened up this avenue where my skills are more valued and placed at a higher monetary rate compared to other jobs," the New York-based dancer said. Tay Marquise's viral TikTok dances have also helped him land deals with brands like Calvin Klein, Planet Fitness, and Nerf. The 22-year-old has also gotten various short-term dance gigs, like when he was paid $3,000 to dance in a promotion for the action-comedy movie "Bullet Train." (Insider verified these earnings and deals with documentation.)As a college student studying musical theater, Marquise dreams of working full-time as a dancer or actor, but has worried the career path won't support him financially. Through TikTok, where he has about <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@taymarquise?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">600,000 followers</a>, Marquise has been able to supplement his income from dance with paid partnerships. He charges at least $4,000 per TikTok video, although final compensation depends on the brands' specific terms and conditions."It's really persuaded me to keep going after I graduate," he said.While TikTok has opened up new doors for dancers, it's not the only forum for performers to showcase their work and reach new audiences. Some in the industry, including ABT and Bedard, have been looking to platforms like Instagram and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-influencers-transition-youtube-shorts-monetization-revenue-share-engagement-2023-1">YouTube</a> should US lawmakers follow through on their calls to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-threatening-tiktok-with-ban-if-owners-dont-sell-shares-2023-3">ban TikTok</a> in the country."Some people do prefer TikTok and hope it isn't banned, but there are other social-media platforms out there so we'll adapt if we need to," Liz said.<div type="image" title="Rihanna Super Bowl Halftime Show Performance" height="4616" width="6925" msid="99302435" hostid="261" sizebytes="4942404"></div><h2>Choreography timing and style has changed, and access to different styles of dance has increased</h2>Still, TikTok's influence on the industry isn't going away any time soon. It's even started to influence how dances are structured and taught.Bedard said she's had to rethink her choreography for TikToks that include multiple performers to fit the app's vertical frame, for instance."Choreography is more vertical now to fit the frame of a video on TikTok or YouTube, but that's hard to do when you have a lot of people," she said. "To fit the screen of a TikTok, we use more staggered lines so each dancer can be seen."She said famous choreographers like Parris Goebel, who arranged <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjBo--1n8lI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rihanna's </a><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjBo--1n8lI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">performance at the </a><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjBo--1n8lI" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Super Bowl halftime show</a>, have mastered this. That performance quickly went viral on TikTok as <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/rihanna-flowers-tiktok-dance-older-women-super-bowl-halftime">users recreated moments</a> from the show, which featured the artist in a red jumpsuit surrounded by dancers dressed in white.As more people have hopped on TikTok dance trends, creators, <a href="https://news.bloomberglaw.com/ip-law/tiktok-dance-creators-struggle-to-win-credit-and-copyrights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">especially those of color</a>, have called for proper crediting for choreography, which the app has tried to address with <a href="https://newsroom.tiktok.com/en-us/crediting-tools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more tools.</a>On TikTok, Bedard also highlights her most dynamic moves first, like jumps, splits, or turns to draw viewers in. She searches the app to see what music or sounds are trending, too."The audience needs to be caught up in the dance right away or they scroll," she said. It's led some dance teachers to put the most dynamic moves at the start of their routines rather than build toward them, said Brandon Powers, an LA-based professional dancer and founder of the immersive-art organization Constellation. This approach could influence how the next generation of dancers structures choreography.Powers said TikTok is already introducing people to different dance styles, from Afrobeats to salsa, and boosting enrollment for various types of dance classes, based on his conversations with dancers and instructors in California."It's really opened up an awareness for dance movements from all parts of the world," he said.
