<ul class="summary-list"><li>Elder millennials are facing down slowing wage growth and wealth, layered atop past recessions.</li><li>And new homeownership by younger millennials is outpacing elder millennials.</li></ul>It's a bad time to be an elder millennial.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/typical-geriatric-millennial-age-digital-skills-communication-2021-7">Elder millennials</a> — whom Bank of America defines as those ages 35 to 45 — have already <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-money-financial-economic-trauma-recession-student-debt-inflation-2022-2">weathered a lot of economic storms</a>. They've seen two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-coming-2022-gen-z-millennials-first-normal-slowdown-inflation-2022-5">recessions</a> in their adult lives, a pandemic, and an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elder-millennials-recovering-from-great-recession-wealth-careers-2022-1">economy that seemed to be stacked against them from the start</a>.But while the pandemic and its resulting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/geriatric-millennials-pandemic-unemployment-rate-2022-1">labor market</a> may have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-won-great-resignation-now-losing-the-big-firing-2022-9">offered some economic reprieve</a>, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-say-they-cant-afford-dream-life-survey-2022-1">financial walls</a> might be closing in on elder millennials. That could be chalked up to the lifestyle expectations of a cohort that should be entering a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-pandemic-shaped-millennials-adulthood-growing-up-2021-3">more stable period of adulthood</a>, one that includes comfortably spending, owning a house, and saving for retirement. Instead, they're falling behind in home ownership, accruing trillions in debt, and still scrambling to maintain their lifestyle.Some of the blame rests with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-great-recession-affected-millennials-2019-8">recessions that came before</a>."The older Millennial cohort is more likely to have been hit harder by the 2008 housing crisis, which potentially set them back financially relative to younger Millennials," Bank of America Institute wrote in their <a target="_blank" href="https://institute.bankofamerica.com/economic-insights/uneven-housing-market.html">research</a> on homeownership. As Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/1980s-millennials-wealth-the-great-recession-2018-5">previously reported</a>, the Great Recession made millennials born in the 1980s a "lost generation" when it came to wealth accumulation. A 2018 report from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis <a target="_blank" href="https://www.stlouisfed.org/-/media/project/frbstl/stlouisfed/Files/PDFs/HFS/essays/HFS_essay_2_2018.pdf?la=en">found</a> that the wealth of millennials born in the 1980s was 34% below predictions."We believe many families in the youngest cohort we studied here — respondents born in the 1980s — are at substantial risk of accumulating less wealth over their life spans than the members of previous generations," the report's authors wrote.But just as the pandemic led to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-millennials-financial-futures-jobs-economy-money-pandemic-recession-2023-4">boom-bust cycle for younger workers</a>, it seems like older millennials, too, are facing a bleak picture — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-gen-z-parents-struggle-lonely-childcare-costs-money-friends-2023-11">especially as childcare costs mount</a>, with older millennials <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-from-home-boom-millennials-not-gen-z-boomers-2023-11">likely facing the brunt of more costly care</a>.It's no wonder then that older millennials were the least likely to report feeling "financially well" in <a target="_blank" href="https://business.bofa.com/content/dam/flagship/workplace-benefits/ID22-0888/2023-WBR.pdf">Bank of America's 2023 Workplace Benefits survey</a> of around 1,300 employees. Indeed, 80% of older millennials said they felt stressed about their financial situations. Broadly, millennials' financial well-being score <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-millennials-debt-financial-security-interest-rates-recession-savings-2023-11">tumbled over the last year</a>, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://pro.morningconsult.com/analyst-reports/state-of-consumer-banking-payments-h2-2023">data from Morning Consult</a>. And by age, 35 to 44 year olds are carrying around a median $140,400, according to the Survey of Consumer Finances — the most median debt of any age cohort.While that members of the elder millennial cohort hold a median of around $140,000 in debt, they only make a median of $65,676 a year, according to the latest earnings data from the <a target="_blank" href="https://data.bls.gov/pdq/SurveyOutputServlet">Current Population Survey</a>.Workers ages 40 to 49 hold around $4.4 trillion in debt, per the Federal Reserve Bank of New York — the most of any age cohort they tracked. And that's also true for the youngest elder millennials, with workers ages 30 to 39 holding $3.9 trillion, slightly outpacing 50 to 59 year olds.That's not stopping elder millennials from spending money (or racking up credit card debt). A report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/medialibrary/Research/Interactives/Data/equitable-growth-indicators/downloads/10_2023_EGI_national_consumer_spending.pdf?sc_lang=en&amp;hash=CAECD9968CD2FA60AF8634493A507D71">finds</a> that Americans ages 35 to 44 are still spending on retail and restaurants, more so than their younger compatriots ages 25 to 34. And while younger Americans are seeing more credit card debt go unpaid for 90 days, elder millennials are letting their debts languish too.At the same time, though, Americans under 40 are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/medialibrary/Research/Interactives/Data/equitable-growth-indicators/downloads/10_2023_EGI_national_wealth.pdf?sc_lang=en&amp;hash=E49A671AEAC0EF96A14C4C2386EAAB84">seeing their real wealth grow at a much faster rate</a>. And, while wage growth has been strong across all ages, it's been far more pronounced for workers under 24.Meanwhile, the number of new foreclosures for those ages 40 to 49 has been ticking up, hitting around 8,800 in the third quarter of 2023.Similarly, 40 to 49-year-olds also lead the pack when it comes to new bankruptcies, with around 28,500 people in that age cohort declaring bankruptcy in the third quarter of 2023. Among 30 to 39-year-olds, around 24,000 were also newly entering bankruptcy.And then there's homeownership, or lack thereof. Through tracking internal data on escrow payments, Bank of America Institute <a target="_blank" href="https://institute.bankofamerica.com/content/dam/bank-of-america-institute/economic-insights/uneven-housing-market.pdf">found</a> that older millennials are falling behind their younger millennial counterparts. They found that the number of older millennial households who had an escrow payment had fallen 2% year-over-year as of October 2023, which was lower than Gen X; on the flip slide, younger millennials' payments "remained relatively strong."And so, for elder millennials, it's yet again a bleak picture. The things that were supposed to mark their entry into adulthood — home ownership, becoming a parent, and having enough disposable income to spend on things like going out — are instead only making their economic situation that much more difficult.Are you an elder millennial dealing with a tough economic situation? Elder millennials are stuck in a lifestyle they can't afford

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Canada faces a severe housing-affordability crisis, with home values doubling since 2011.</li><li>Last year, the federal government launched the Housing Accelerator Fund to boost home construction.</li></ul>Canada is facing a housing-affordability crisis even more severe than the US's housing woes. But its federal government is starting to aggressively throw its weight behind fixing the home shortage.Like the American federal government, Canada's national government doesn't have a lot of control over housing policy. Instead, provincial and municipal governments create land-use policies and control building and demand-side subsidies that shape the housing landscape.Despite the federal government's limited control over housing policy, it's gotten a lot of the blame for skyrocketing costs, said Mike Moffatt, a senior director at the Smart Prosperity Institute at the University of Ottawa. That public sentiment pushed officials in Ottawa to warm to a more hands-on approach. "Canadians just want to be able to afford a home — they don't really care about the intricacies of constitutional law," Moffatt said.So last year, the federal government launched an initiative — the <a target="_blank" href="https://liberal.ca/our-platform/1-4-million-new-homes/">Housing Accelerator Fund</a> — that incentivizes local governments to legalize denser housing construction, including by mass transit, and otherwise stimulate more home building. In exchange, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party have opened up billions of dollars in infrastructure funding — from water to transit — to support that new housing.The program pushes provinces and cities to create more pro-housing policies, including ending single-family zoning, loosening restrictions on how tall and close together residential buildings can be, opening up government land for housing, and eliminating parking mandates. The federal government first made deals directly with all the country's major cities, which the government <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/federal-government-fraser-housing-strategy-1.7171889">estimates</a> will allow 750,000 more homes to be permitted than otherwise would have been.In April, Trudeau <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/justin-trudeau-budget-housing-1.7161005">announced an additional $5 billion</a> in infrastructure grants for provinces and territories that implement pro-housing policies, including legalizing "missing-middle" homes. Those include medium-density housing like duplexes, triplexes, and small apartment buildings. The most recent push is part of Trudeau's larger housing plan, which aims to get <a target="_blank" href="https://toronto.citynews.ca/2024/04/12/trudeau-reveals-liberal-plan-to-build-3-9m-homes-by-2031-amid-housing-crisis/">3.9 million new homes built by 2031</a>.Overall, the federal push has already been quite successful in changing the housing-policy landscape across the country, Moffatt said. For example, as a result of their deals with the government, all of the major cities now allow at least four units to be built on single-family lots. Certain provinces, such as British Columbia, have been much more willing to push pro-housing policies. Local governments in places like Ontario and Alberta have put up more of a fight. However, the approach creates some political cover for policymakers facing antihousing constituencies."Uptake hasn't been universal, but overall it's been quite strong," Moffatt said. "We have seen some municipal changes that, even 20 months ago, I would have said were highly, highly unlikely."But just because denser housing is legal doesn't mean it will get built. Building missing-middle housing and other more-affordable homes needs to be attractive to developers. And with home-construction costs way up, that's a steeper ask, said Matti Siemiatycki, who heads the Infrastructure Institute at the University of Toronto's School of Cities. "With the rising interest rates, with rising construction costs, a lot of the product that used to be financed is now becoming much harder," he said.City governments have long been "biased towards homeowners and not towards renters," Moshe Lander, a Concordia University economist, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/canada-housing-crisis-bubble-imploding-real-estate-prices-rent-decline-2023-11">told Business Insider late last year</a>, and support policies that limit home building and keep home values elevated.Like in the US, the housing-affordability crisis in Canada is driven by a lack of housing and rising demand. Over the past several years, an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/22/americas/canada-record-population-growth-intl/index.html">influx of immigrants</a>, rampant investor speculation, and rapidly rising construction costs have also sent prices up. The average home value in Canada has <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65688460">more than doubled since 2011</a>. Rents are up <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cp24.com/news/average-asking-rent-prices-reach-2-193-in-february-up-10-5-from-2023-1.6802734">more than 20%</a> over the past two years. And a ballooning number of Canadians are spending more than they can afford on housing.At this point, most of Canada's housing landscape looks like California's supply-starved and deeply unaffordable market."The difference is that California makes up about 12% or 13% of the United States, whereas Ontario and BC combined are over half," Moffatt said. "Half to two-thirds of the country is unaffordable."Siemiatycki said there had been a "subtle but noticeable change" in how Canadians view residential density. Many homeowners who previously opposed densification are starting to realize that "even if it's not them that rising prices and skyrocketing impact, it might be their children, or their colleagues, or their elders," he said.Pro-housing policies are increasingly popular across Canada's ideological spectrum. The federal opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party, says Trudeau's government hasn't gone far enough and has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/poilievre-housing-plan-1.6966907">proposed his own plan</a>, which would require cities to increase the number of new homes built by 15% each year or lose out on federal grant money. It would also impose a fine on cities that tolerate "NIMBY" — the antidevelopment "not in my backyard" philosophy — opposition to housing construction.Under President Joe Biden's 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the US federal government is providing states and cities across the country with hundreds of billions of dollars in funding for transportation and other infrastructure projects. Canada's bold plan to make housing more affordable is showing signs of working &mdash; and could be a model for the US

Some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-things-labor-shortage-people-quitting-work-afl-cio-spriggs-2021-7">retired early</a> because they lost their jobs and struggled to find new work. And as virus cases remain at elevated levels, some are just too worried about the pandemic to keep working.Yet a <a href="https://crr.bc.edu/briefs/what-resources-do-retirees-have-for-long-term-services-supports/">recent study</a> from Boston College suggests a large share of retirees can't really afford it.Americans' odds of retiring before 62 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-retirement-age-labor-market-great-resignation-boomers-golden-decade-2021-9">rose to roughly 50% in July</a>, according to a survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. That's the highest reading dating back to 2014 and caps a steady decline in <keyword id="11909870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retirement" source="Orion">retirement</keyword> age over the last several years.But 36% of Americans aged 65 to 69 aren't able to cover just one year of minimal care, according to the<a href="https://crr.bc.edu/briefs/what-resources-do-retirees-have-for-long-term-services-supports/"> study</a> from Boston College's Center for Retirement Research. Only 21% of Americans can cover a year of severe needs, such as dementia or physically debilitating health issues.The team's calculations include the need for paid and unpaid care. It also uses the median hourly rate for a home health aide for paid-care calculations, which totaled $22 per hour in 2018.The ability to pay for <keyword id="12243967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elderly-care" source="Orion">elderly care</keyword> also varies widely depending on marital status, education, and race and ethnicity, researchers Anek Belbase, Anqi Chen, and Alicia Munnell said in the September paper. While 31% of married people aren't able to cover a year of care, the share climbs to 33% for unmarried men and 56% for unmarried women.College graduates are also much more prepared to cover care costs than less-educated Americans. Just 14% of people with college degrees can't afford a year of minimal care, according to the study. Conversely, 65% of those who never graduated high school don't have the means to pay for care.And white Americans are generally much better equipped for retirement than racial minorities. Just 32% of white Americans can't cover minimal elderly care, according to the study. That jumps to 49% for Black Americans and doubles to 64% for Hispanic Americans.The findings paint a bleaker picture of retirement at a time when millions of Americans - many unwillingly - have yet to return to the workforce. The labor force participation rate for Americans aged at least 55 years <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/3-things-labor-shortage-people-quitting-work-afl-cio-spriggs-2021-7">sits near 15 year lows</a> after tumbling at the start of the pandemic, while the broader rate has staged a much more significant recovery. The data, along with booming retirement accounts, suggest many Americans were forced into early retirement due to the pandemic.Many of those who haven't retired yet have done little to prepare. Twenty-six percent of non-retired Americans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/quarter-of-americans-have-no-retirement-savings-2019-6">haven't saved a penny</a> for their eventual exits from the workforce, according to a 2019 Fed study. That means a significant number of Americans didn't benefit from the stock market's boom through the pandemic recovery, and are likely to have little financial cushion if any by the time they retire.With the pandemic now in its 19th month and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-report-august-235000-payrolls-unemployment-rate-labor-market-recovery-2021-9">the hiring recovery running on fumes</a>, people who left the workforce are unlikely to come back. The country may still be rebounding, but the new study suggests millions of old Americans are entering a new phase of economic turmoil.

Americans expect to retire earlier than ever, but nearly 40% of retirees can't afford to take care of themselves for just one year

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Cheryl Sands moved from Illinois to Costa Rica, fearing retirement costs in the US.</li><li>As costs rose, she struggled to live on her pension and Social Security despite working two jobs.</li></ul>Cheryl Sands, 69, had worked two jobs at a time for much of her life, but after seeing her two older siblings <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/baby-boomer-gen-z-millennials-economy-housing-job-market-stocks-2024-2">work</a> into their 70s and 80s to afford daily costs, she knew it was time to move from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moving-to-florida-weather-chicago-illinois-boomer-retirement-sarasota-beaches-2024-1">Illinois</a> — and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/americans-moving-abroad-cost-of-living-too-expensive-debt-retirement-2024-4">the US</a>.She feared her teaching pension and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-can-retire-using-social-security-before-retirement-2024-5">Social Security</a> wouldn't be enough to live on without continuing to work. She had saved about $300,000, but into her 60s, she had two jobs to keep her savings stable.She looked to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-from-colorado-to-costa-rica-blue-zone-2023-9">Costa Rica</a> as an option, having visited a few times prior, and she knew the cost of living was cheaper and life was calmer. She moved earlier this year and has loved it since."What I love about<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-moved-to-costa-rica-remote-work-mental-health-2023-5"> Costa Rica</a> is the freedom, work ethic, value of learning and education, taking responsibility for their and their children's actions and accepting the consequences of their actions, pride in what they have, even if it's not much, respect for others, positive attitudes, and valuing children and the elderly," Sands said.<div type="image" title="Cheryl Sands home" height="2952" width="3710" msid="110795487" hostid="261"></div>Sands is one of many Americans who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-moving-to-panama-new-mexico-hamptons-best-places-move-2024-4">moved to Latin America</a> for their retirement. Some <a target="_blank" href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T6x5PBBRilYKZLJPN-s-C27gGd5BEFo8adc0OghyDgI/edit?usp=sharing">recently told Business Insider</a> they were scared they wouldn't have enough money for a comfortable retirement in the US and thought living in Latin America would be cheaper. Others said they found new income opportunities that were much more relaxed than in the US.<h2 id="3fc4a7eb-5333-4cbc-9966-7d18fd8c27c5">Life in the US got more expensive</h2>Sands lived in northern Illinois for much of her life. At one point, she described herself as a "professional student" who accumulated various degrees but did not know what to do with them. She worked odd jobs until she was 35. Eventually, she became a chemistry teacher in Aurora, about 40 miles from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-chicago-from-portland-big-city-life-affordable-2024-5">Chicago</a>.She taught for over 20 years, and in 2007, she quit her job and put her house up for sale. She assumed that the equity on her home would be her savings for another house, but she said it lost a lot of value amid the 2008 housing crisis.She moved to the Illinois-Kentucky border and bought a cheap house on 10 acres in Shawnee National Forest. She said the home was "deserted and isolated," and she enjoyed living in peaceful nature.Sands received a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boomer-retiring-early-nervous-about-money-2024-5">pension</a> from teaching, but it wasn't enough for her to live on. She worked as a substitute teacher and installed barbed wire and chain link fencing on properties in the area to help pay her bills. She said people in her area were shocked because she held two jobs even in retirement. Her 82-year-old sister and 78-year-old brother still work as well.Sands increasingly felt out of place. She was 25 miles from the closest town, meaning going to medical appointments was a growing hassle, and taking care of her property was more challenging and expensive.Between her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-peak-boomer-alice-social-security-masters-degree-student-loans-2024-5">Social Security</a> and pension, she earned $30,000 a year, not nearly enough to enter an assisted living or retirement community. Her property taxes increased 165% in one year, and the cost of deliveries from stores like Walmart also spiked.Though she had a comfortable home, she worried she wouldn't have enough money to live without constantly worrying or working two jobs. She considered moving to a more urban area but couldn't imagine paying more for a much smaller home."I did not see myself being able to go anywhere, and I could see myself having to fall into the public support sector after not too long because I would not have any money," Sands said.<h2 id="4d57742f-42f9-48a4-b60c-ba5ae9c64331">Moving to Costa Rica</h2>She remembered a trip to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-do-voluntary-work-exchange-in-costa-rica-2023-12">Costa Rica</a> in 1995 and visited in 2022 and 2023 to see if escaping retirement in the US by living there was viable."Last fall, I sold my house, sold all my belongings, packed up my two 90-pound dogs, packed as much as I could fit in carpet bags and suitcases, and left," Sands said.She moved to a condo in the Guanacaste region in northwest Costa Rica earlier this year. Within three weeks, she realized it wasn't big enough for her dogs, so she searched for another rental property. She chose not to buy a home as she's still waiting on her pensioner visa.She rented another home for $1,100 a month, a one-bedroom house a short walk from the beach. Her home is in Junquillal, a town between Santa Cruz and Tamarindo.<div type="image" title="Overhead look at Cheryl Sands' home" height="2892" width="3856" msid="110795483" hostid="261"></div>She has a 30-foot treehouse with views of the ocean and mountains. Her property is surrounded by trees, and she has a large front yard for her dogs. Her home has reliable internet and electricity, which are included in her rent.Sands said nearly everyone she's met has been very friendly, and she hasn't had much of an issue with the language barrier. Many residents speak some English, and she's learning Spanish to feel more at home. Still, she said many people think she's wealthy because she's from the US."It's incomprehensible that with the money I had, I didn't have enough money to live where I lived, and I came here because it's less expensive," Sands said. "I feel more welcomed here than I did in Southern Illinois."She said the cost of food is much lower than the US, though portion sizes for packaged goods are smaller. She's valued the wide selection of fresh produce and fish, though the stores in her small town don't have everything she needs. Dairy products are also rather expensive, she's noticed.The closest city is about a half-hour drive, which is $50-$75 each way via taxi. She doesn't need to worry about owning a car as she said vehicles are a luxury and "for the very brave."While the cost of living is much lower in Costa Rica, the exchange rate between the US dollar and Costa Rican colón <a target="_blank" href="https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-04-01/coffee-and-tourism-costa-ricas-economic-emblems-hit-by-local-dollar-slump.html#:~:text=The%20exchange%20rate%20of%20the,it%20was%20a%20decade%20ago.">has worsened</a>, meaning prices in Costa Rica have recently shot up. Her Walmart bill, for example, increased by at least a third in just a month.Still, she's not too stressed about money anymore. She wakes up at 5:30 a.m. each morning, takes her dogs for a walk, swims for a few hours, does household chores, and reads — which she acknowledges she rarely had time for as a teacher."It doesn't sound like much, but my days are full," she said. But there's an even darker side to DINKs: The slice that forgoes kids not by choice but out of necessity. These are the Americans who would love to be parents but find that they can't swing it financially. They're more accurately described as childless rather than childfree.It's difficult to parse out the exact number of Americans who might want kids but can't have them. We know that the childfree group — people who don't want kids — <a target="_blank" href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0283301">might be about 20% of the US adult population</a>. But it's harder to track down the people who might otherwise have kids were the circumstances different.A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/finance/2024-cost-of-raising-children-report">survey</a> from NerdWallet and Harris Poll polling over 2,000 US adults in December found that 56% of non-parents don't plan to have kids. Of this group, 31% said that the "overall cost of raising a child is too high.""The big takeaway — and what really stood out to me — is just how big the cost of having kids looms for both current parents who are considering having more kids, and also people who don't have children yet," Kimberly Palmer, personal finance expert at NerdWallet, told BI.In an economy as large as the US's, any story about the economy is probably true somewhere. It's why some industries can't fill <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-work-labor-market-wage-growth-in-february-2024-3">open jobs</a> while people in other professions struggle to find a new role, or why a country where jobs are abundant and wages on the rise also has a housing and childcare affordability crisis — and a dreary general economic outlook. And when it comes to DINKs, that duality is true as well — for some, it's a boon; for others, it's less of a choice than a need."We have over 150 million people working in the US economy," Kathryn Edwards, an economist at the RAND Corporation, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ghost-jobs-why-some-companies-dont-respond-to-applications-2022-9">previously told BI</a>. "Whatever can be true is true for at least one person. Having that many workers means that you can have two true stories that are in absolute conflict, and it totally makes sense that they're both in our labor market."While there are signs that our society is coming to greater acceptance of childfree people, evidence points to our economy moving in the opposite direction. A Business Insider calculation earlier this year found that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-kids-cost-raising-child-inflation-childcare-tax-exemptions-2024-1">parents could spend $26,000</a> raising a kid in 2024. As birth rates are dropping, costs for housing, childcare, and medical care are rising. It's contributing to a whole population of DINKs who can't afford to shed the moniker.<h2>'We're fine with a single mom working 60 hours a week paying for daycare'</h2>Larry Bienz, 38, is a social worker and DINK in Chicago. He said he might be a parent in a different country, one with different priorities and infrastructure. But he's chosen not to be in this one.In our society, Bienz said, "the first and foremost priority is that people are working in a job. Everything else comes after making sure that we are working on a job."He could imagine a life where he has kids, but the lifestyle it would require — both parents juggling jobs, housework, and childcare on little sleep — just doesn't seem sustainable.Bienz already feels like he doesn't have enough time to invest in not just pleasure activities but also being civically engaged and part of his community. Layer onto that, as Bienz notes, a country with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/current-federal-minimum-wage-is-13-years-old-inflation-impact-2022-7">stagnant minimum wage</a> and without guaranteed paid leave or affordable healthcare, where parents rely on underpaid educators and day care workers. Meanwhile, in other countries, parents can have up to a year of paid parental leave guaranteed."Our system says, 'Oh, it's okay. You can get up to 12 weeks unpaid and you won't get fired from your job," Bienz said. "It's like, what a joke. 'Oh, I won't get fired for my job if I want to stay home with my baby for a while!'"Bienz pointed to the example of the "welfare queen" — a concept "packed full of racism" — as an example of what it feels like the system won't allow: Someone using public resources to feed and house their family without working a job."The one thing we can't live with is a welfare queen," he said. "We're perfectly fine with, let's just say, a single mom working 60 hours a week paying for daycare."<h2>That'll be $30,000, please</h2>Amelia and Kevin desperately want to be parents.The couple — who are 37 and 43 respectively — have been trying to get pregnant for 18 months. They've bought a bigger house in a good school district in anticipation of the kids who would come. But there's no baby for them yet. And in a country where reproductive care is more scant by the moment, and health insurance only offers a piecemeal approach to affording treatment, they're having to think about how much, exactly, they can afford to spend on the act of having a child."We're the ideal situation. We're a happily married couple. We have good jobs, we're well educated," Amelia, whose last name is known to BI but withheld for privacy reasons, said. "What infertility feels like — it feels like every month you're attending a class and at the end of the month you go to take the final and the teacher comes up to you and goes, what are you doing? You're not in this class."The couple hasn't yet invested in medical interventions like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pay-for-ivf-iui-fertility-treatment-credit-card-2024-2">intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF)</a> yet, but have already spent over $1,000 on treatments, therapy, and doctor's visits — and that's with insurance. More in-depth treatment, like IVF, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kff.org/womens-health-policy/issue-brief/coverage-and-use-of-fertility-services-in-the-u-s/">likely wouldn't be covered</a>, they said. And that's before considering any other potential risks, as reproductive rights and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-alabama-ivf-ruling-gop-republicans-2024-biden-2024-2">access to IVF</a> become more imperiled in the US.The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reproductivefacts.org/patient-journeys/in-vitro-fertilization-treatment/">American Society for Reproductive Medicine estimates</a> that the average cost of an IVF cycle is $12,400, and other estimates <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/article/ivf-treatment-costs-guide.html">have it coming in closer to $25,000</a>. Meanwhile, adoption in the US can end up costing anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000, per the <a target="_blank" href="https://cwig-prod-prod-drupal-s3fs-us-east-1.s3.amazonaws.com/public/documents/s_costs.pdf">US Children's Bureau</a>. Comparatively, the <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEHOINUSA646N">median household income</a> in the US is $74,580, meaning a household trying to embark upon parenthood through nontraditional means might be putting over a third of their earnings toward it.As countries around the world bemoan falling population rates and some politicians in the US try to limit <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/these-are-the-5-us-states-where-hardest-get-abortion-2023-4">access to abortion</a>, Amelia thinks the government could step in."Everyone's saying you shouldn't abort, you should put your kid up for adoption, you should adopt. I'm like, great, let us adopt," Amelia said. "Oh no, that'd be $30,000, please."Amelia's not alone: In the NerdWallet survey of people who were not parents, 11% of respondents said it was because the cost of infertility treatments was too high, and 10% similarly said that the cost of adoption is too high. Those high costs are also colliding with a perfect reproductive storm as treatments like IVF <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alabama-judge-rules-frozen-embryos-are-people-ivf-2024-2">become potentially even riskier</a>."In Michigan, we saw a big jump in the number of child-free people following the overturning of Roe v. Wade," Zachary Neal, a professor in Michigan State University's psychology department's social-personality program, told me. In anecdotal responses in a <a target="_blank" href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0294459">landmark study</a> of childfree adults Neal conducted with fellow Michigan State psychology professor — and his wife — Jennifer Neal, men were even thinking about the decision's repercussions, saying that they would not want to expose their partner to potential medical risks. "Both men and women are thinking in this climate, it just became too risky to be a pregnant person."<h2>The baby elephant in the room</h2>Priscilla Davies is a 41-year-old actor, writer, and content creator. As an elder millennial, she's seen the ups and downs of multiple "economic crises." Davies is single and childfree by choice — in part because of the ways that marriage places <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-straight-relationships-are-doomed-according-to-sex-researcher-2020-12">uneven gendered burdens upon women.</a>"The establishment calls out the issues — they call it out from the wrong angle — and they're like, 'Oh, millennials are killing families. They don't want to have children. They're so selfish. They're always coming at it from the wrong angle as opposed to calling out what the issue is. And it's basically an elephant in the room," Davies said. "We all know that this economic system does not work."<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennial-gen-z-parents-struggle-lonely-childcare-costs-money-friends-2023-11">Younger parents</a> have told Business Insider that the idea of the caretaking village has been washed away by ever-higher costs, skyrocketing rents, grandparents still working, and the loss of safe third spaces for kids and parents alike to congregate. Without a village, parenthood feels even more untenable."We should be providing financial assistance to parents. Just point blank, period. You have a child, we as a social society are invested in our children, so let's help people raise their children and that community, unfortunately — because we live in this hyper-capitalistic environment — that community is going to have to come at this stage from money," Davies said.The tale of two DINKs — those who have happily opted into the lifestyle and others who have been pushed in — might sound like a story of diverging paths. But, ultimately, they're sides of the same coin: They want to have a choice.For the DINKs who are happily living it up, that means the choice to exist peacefully and respectfully as a childfree adult. It means a world that respects their choices and can envision something beyond a traditional family structure that provides meaning, love, and satisfaction.And for the DINKs-by-default, it means a path to parenthood, no matter their financial standing.Right now, though, neither is reality. And that's leading childfree and childless people alike to experience isolation and difficult calculations. As for Amelia and Kevin, they said they're taking it one step at a time."It really comes down to do you have the money to have a child? And that's a very depressing situation to be in," Amelia said. "How much is a child worth it to you? Isn't a child worth $30,000? Isn't it worth it to you? The dark side of DINKs: People who want kids but can't afford them 

Mumbai, RBI Governor <keyword id="6359111" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="Orion">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> on Thursday said the central bank does not "emulate" others when it comes to regulations and asserted that the bank's as well as his own opposition to cryptocurrencies remain unchanged, a day after US regulators allowed bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). He also said that emerging markets and the world cannot afford to have a "crypto mania". "What is good for another market need not be good for us. Therefore our views -- both that of the Reserve Bank and personally that of mine -- remain the same," Das said. Addressing a financial sector seminar organised by business daily Mint here, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) chief also said that for emerging market economies and advanced economies, travelling down that path of cryptocurrencies will create huge risks which will be very difficult to contain going forward. "The question is why do you want to go down that road? What is it that you are going to get?," Das said while responding to a query about the development in the US with respect to cryptocurrencies. <keyword id="20153809" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="personally-das" source="keywords">Personally Das</keyword> and RBI, as an institution, are opposed to private cryptocurrencies on the grounds that they pose tremendous threat to the financial stability. "The US capital markets regulator in the same announcement also issued necessary cautionary advice and necessary warning to investors to be careful along with the risks it poses. Our position, my position and the RBI's position on this remain unchanged irrespective of who does what. Just because someone has done something, we are not here to emulate them," he said. The remarks were in the context of the US regulator SEC permitting bitcoin ETFs. The approval is seen as a landmark event in the adoption of cryptocurrencies in mainstream finance as the ETF structure gives institutions and financial advisors a familiar and regulated way to have an exposure to bitcoins. "I don't wish to comment on what a regulator of another country has done; they know what is best for their country. But I would like to say that they themselves have flagged risks in the product and advised people to be very careful. "We are all familiar with the Tulip mania in the Netherlands that had led to an asset bubble in the past. I don't think emerging markets and the world can afford a crypto mania that could lead to similar outcomes," the governor said. On whether he sees the forthcoming vote-on-account to be inflationary, Das said that going by the past records of the present government, he feels that the interim budget will not lead to inflationary pressures. Further, Das mentioned many supply side measures that the government has taken to contain price rise since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war.

The world cannot afford a crypto mania: Shaktikanta Das

<ul class="summary-list"><li>California has helped lead the charge to boost ADUs, which are increasingly popular across the US.</li><li>But a Malibu couple's struggle to build an ADU shows how local governments are standing in the way.</li></ul>California policymakers have done a lot to make building a backyard tiny-home <a target="_blank" href="https://bipartisanpolicy.org/blog/accessory-dwelling-units-adus-in-california/">easier than ever before</a>. That's because accessory dwelling units — smaller, extra homes on existing lots, also known as "granny flats" — are a good way to add density to residential neighborhoods full of single-family homes.But not all local governments and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/adus-tower-over-neighboring-backyards/509-07af8570-6641-4a14-a26c-1143363a6cc2">communities</a> are as open to ADUs — and some are willing to go to extreme measures to block them. A Malibu couple is learning that the hard way. Jason and Elizabeth Riddick have been trying to build an ADU in their backyard in the pricey coastal enclave since July 2020.The couple wants Elizabeth's aging mother to be able to live independently, but close enough that they can care for her. "Her moving in here and having her own space is a very urgent issue," Elizabeth told Business Insider.So they applied for a permit from the city to build a small ADU and a minor addition to their existing house. Almost a year later, the city planning commission denied the Riddicks' request, arguing the project was too big and too close to the street, the Malibu Times <a target="_blank" href="https://malibutimes.com/malibu-couple-battles-city-over-request-to-build-adu">reported</a>. While the ADU met the state's standards, the commission insisted that it needed a coastal development permit, which it didn't qualify for.The Riddicks, represented by the libertarian Pacific Legal Foundation, appealed the commission's decision and a few months later the commission denied their appeal. So the couple submitted modified plans to the city that didn't include an addition to the house. Again, the commission rejected it. So the Riddicks <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thecentersquare.com/california/article_4a1a3018-9b29-11ec-be92-c3c75b3e34cc.html">sued the city</a> and in July 2022, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge sided with the couple.The Riddicks say they've spent more than $50,000 on the permitting and design process for the ADU, and that not a single neighbor has expressed concern with their plans. In fact, several of their neighbors have built unpermitted ADUs on their own property, Elizabeth said. "No one cares," Jason added.But the city wouldn't stop there. It appealed the court's decision to an appellate court, which affirmed the lower court's ruling and found the Riddicks didn't need a coastal development permit to build their ADU. Again, the city appealed the decision, this time to the state supreme court this month. The Riddicks are preparing to file their reply, David Deerson, a Pacific Legal Foundation property rights attorney representing the Riddicks pro bono, told Business Insider.A representative for the city's planning commission did not immediately respond to BI's request for comment.If the state supreme court declines to take up the case, which Deerson thinks is likely, the appellate court's ruling will stand and the Riddicks should be granted a permit by the city.The Riddicks' case points to a broader issue of local governments finding ways to get around looser state regulations. And Malibu is finding ways to block housing construction without having passed its own ADU ordinance, which would allow it to much more heavily restrict development."Instead of going through the hard work of actually legislating and amending the law that they say they don't like, they've gone to kind of incredible lengths to stop an 85-year-old disabled woman from living in a modest 463-square-foot ADU," Deerson said.Deerson and the Riddicks believe they're caught up in the city's broader fight to keep zoning and land-use policy under local control.The pricey coastal enclave is "not interested in supporting any type of additional housing," Elizabeth said, "no matter how badly it's needed by the people who live here, by the community here, by the teachers, by the workers, by the single moms, by people who cannot afford what it costs to have a house here."Jason added that ADUs are "the most viable way" to add new, moderately-priced housing to the community.But even as many communities push back, cities and states across the country are jumping on the ADU bandwagon. ADUs have become a particularly popular way to boost the housing supply in part because they allow homeowners more flexibility to do what they want with their property, including for income generation by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/convert-garage-into-airbnb-rent-pay-mortgage-california-adu-2023-8">renting the home out</a>.Boosting the supply of all kinds of housing helps bring costs down and is a key part of addressing the housing affordability crisis.California has helped lead the charge to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-10-14/a-new-law-allows-homeowner-to-sell-adus-like-condos-boosting-homeownership-heres-how-ab-1033-works">loosen regulations</a> on ADUs. In 2022, the state said yes to the construction of more than 23,000 ADUs, up from fewer than 5,000 in 2017. Millions of Americans are set to see their healthcare bills surge in 2023 with more pandemic aid fading away.That's due to the growing possibility Democrats never manage to resurrect parts of their social spending and climate package, which stalled out in the evenly-divided Senate because of resistance from Sen. <keyword id="11930702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="joe-manchin" source="Orion">Joe Manchin</keyword> of West Virginia.The Biden stimulus law beefed up subsidies to cut monthly premium costs and make private individual health insurance plans more affordable under the <keyword id="12109871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="affordable-care-act" source="Orion">Affordable Care Act</keyword> (ACA). But the voters facing eye-popping bills next year tend to be older — the very group that turns out in larger numbers during midterm elections."It's those people who are relatively middle-income, and who are also elderly that are going to face the biggest hit if the subsidies expire," Emily Gee, the vice president and healthcare policy coordinator at the liberal-leaning Center of American Progress, told Insider.In Manchin's home state of West Virginia, some could experience a calamitous increase in their healthcare bills. A 60-year old married West Virginian couple earning $75,000 will see their monthly premium skyrocket by $2,700 if Obamacare subsidies end, according to <a href="https://acasignups.net/22/04/25/new-state-state-how-much-more-will-you-pay-if-amrescueplan-subsidies-arent-extended">estimates</a> from healthcare policy expert Charles Gaba.A similar couple in Arizona would experience a $942 monthly premium hike, per Gaba's projections. Those states are up for grabs in November with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midterms-primary-election-dates-who-is-running-swing-states-trump-2022-1">very competitive</a> Senate races underway.Gee added lawmakers must act by midsummer to ensure states and insurers have enough time to set up their enrollment periods, a complex process stretching months. "It's not like there's a switch that you can flick in late August or late in the fall to turn on the subsidies," she said.<h2>A swerving Manchin</h2><div type="image" title="Ron Wyden Joe Manchin" height="3000" width="6000" msid="91400901" hostid="261"></div>Manchin <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/manchin-says-build-back-better-dead-here-s-what-he-n1288492">told NBC News in early February</a> that he's "always been supportive" of ensuring people have access to affordable insurance by keeping the subsidies. While speaking to media persons, Director of Tamil Nadu's Public Health services, T.S. Selvavinayagam, said, "We advise the elderly people and those with co-morbidities to stay away from closed spaces and to wear masks and maintain social distancing when they are outside places." In the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu recorded 493 fresh cases. With this, the total number of active cases in the state has reached 2876 cases. Among the active Covid-19 cases reported, 137 were admitted to hospitals, two were in intensive care units (ICUs) while 51 were administered oxygen therapy. The daily Test Positivity Rate (TPR) in the state is 8.6. Chengalpattu and Kanniyakumari reported 12 and 11 TPR respectively while Chennai reported 10. Except for Ramanathapuram, Kallakurichi, Tenkasi and Villupuram, all other districts recorded fresh Covid cases in the last 24 hours in Tamil Nadu. Chennai is the highest with 132 new cases followed by Coimbatore (43), Kanniyakumari (41), Chengalpattu (31), Tiruvallur (26) and Salem (23). Seven districts of the state reported fresh Covid-19 cases between 10 and 19 while the other districts reported in single digits.
