<ul class="summary-list"><li>Artificial intelligence is now the top priority for major tech firms.</li><li>Software engineers know they need to do more than just code to stay relevant in the AI era.</li></ul>Software engineers know that the days of simply being able to code are behind them.After all, artificial intelligence taking over jobs is not new — numerous tech giants over the past two years announced that they were axing jobs to focus more on artificial intelligence development.Last year, Google <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-layoffs">slashed 12,000 jobs</a> — 6% of its then workforce — as the company began shifting its priorities toward AI.In May 2023, IBM announced that it would <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dropbox-ibm-google-big-tech-companies-ai-in-layoff-memos-2023-5#ibm-4">pause hiring for roles that could be replaced by AI</a>. The affected roles, which amounted to 26,000 jobs, included those in human resources and other non-consumer-facing departments.But AI has had a direct impact on software engineers, too.Although AI has helped to increase their productivity by helping to debug and generate code, software engineers that Business Insider spoke to said that they expect the industry to shrink simply because it doesn't need as many workers as they do today.This, they said, means they have to work smarter if they want to keep their jobs. <h2 id="46fa40b7-28ed-4cdd-8b6b-706f096a4034">AI will push companies to have leaner software engineering teams</h2>Arpita Kaushik, a data scientist at Rocket Mortgage, told BI that AI tools like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/chat-gpt">ChatGPT</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/codex-github-copilot-chatgpt-openai-productivity-2023-3">Github Copilot</a> do a lot of the "heavy lifting" for workers like her.This meant that companies could get by with leaner teams without compromising on output, she said."I think there will be a change in the way a software engineer works, and instead of five software engineers you might need four in future," she said.Kaushik's point was echoed by Aditya Swami, who heads product development efforts at Hatcher+, a venture capital firm in Singapore. In fact, Swami said that shrinking headcounts will be even more apparent in bigger companies."That's going to happen," he said. "Because the basic things they could do, now they could do with AI."<h2 id="4a757fb3-2ca9-47b0-9289-f9f9d5df76dc">Don't say goodbye to technical skills just yet</h2>However, software engineers who think they can rely on AI to solve their problems may be disappointed to learn that one's technical abilities still matter.Swami from Hatcher+ said that he still expects his engineers to have strong coding skills, be able to understand code and explain what they are doing.He said that people who studied software engineering before the rise of AI tools have a stronger foundation because they have "written code from scratch.""The biggest problem right now is that the AI large language model hallucinates. It's not correct 100%, only 50 to 60% of the time," he said. "You still need to be very careful.""When it comes to an interview, you should be able to explain line by line what the code is doing. That's still very important, that hasn't changed," he said.Adrian Goh, cofounder of <a target="_blank" class="" href="http://www.nodeflair.com/">NodeFlair</a>, a job board for tech professionals in Asia, told BI that one's technical foundations have only become more important in the age of AI."Companies value engineers with strong fundamentals who are dedicated to continuous learning and self-upgrading. These qualities ensure adaptability to evolving roles and technologies," Goh said.<h2 id="191cb370-2c56-496c-853d-944ad10d0412">A computer science degree is still far from useless</h2>Academics BI spoke to also said the rise of AI has not diminished the value of a computer science degree and the technical skills that come with earning it"Computer science is not just about AI," said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~kanmy/">Kan Min Yen</a>, an associate professor of computer science at the National University of Singapore."Proper development and use of AI still require fundamental knowledge of software engineering, data management, and security, all tenets of a holistic computing education," he added.While some may think that tools like GitHub Copilot will render them obsolete, Kan said such concerns may be overblown.Software professionals, he said, could still add value by understanding the limitations of AI tools and how to troubleshoot them."You would go to a mechanic to fix a car and to someone who knows the math and training methods for large language modules to fix and diagnose problems with LLMs, such as ChatGPT," Kan explained.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://dr.ntu.edu.sg/cris/rp/rp00698">Bo An</a>, who heads the AI division at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU), said that "the core value of a CS degree remains robust," and advancements in AI do not erode the value of a CS degree.An added that foundational knowledge in "algorithms, data structures, software engineering, and other critical areas" is essential for advancing AI technologies.<h2 id="ed831ea3-0022-49b8-bcaa-0e5519f42de1">Aspiring software engineers need to embrace AI and work on their own projects to stay ahead</h2>That said, software engineers looking to score a job in software engineering must strike a tricky balance between integrating AI into their workflows and honing their fundamentals.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-computer-science-professor-prisoners-use-phones-cs50-free-class-2023-1">David Malan</a>, a computer science professor at Harvard, told BI that AI tools could be a plus for aspiring software engineers who know how to leverage them."In the near term, AI is posed to amplify the impact of individual software engineers," Malan said. "Consider just how many more features they can implement, how many more bugs they can fix if they have a virtual assistant by their side."Malan also advised job seekers to continue building up their portfolio of projects if they haven't already.Working on your own projects, he said, could come in handy during interviews when employers want to see how candidates approach problems."Continuing one's education beyond school, whether formally or informally, forever expanding your own knowledge and skills, can certainly help too," Malan said. "There will always be something new to learn."Tejas Rajagopal, a recent computer science graduate from NTU, said he's been trying to expand his skillset to strengthen his chances of landing a job."You can't just go to classes, watch lectures, do tutorials, and expect to be useful out there," Rajagopal said. "Because if you haven't really done any projects, built anything up by yourself, your education probably won't be adequate."

"Odds are AI will impact finance and law as well."Instead, Malan suggested that students embrace lifelong learning while not neglecting the tried-and-tested approach of working on their own projects."Having a portfolio of projects under one's belt can certainly help, insofar as you can draw on those experiences in applications and interviews to paint a picture of how you think and solve problems," he added.Besides focusing on the technical aspects of the job, Kan said that students shouldn't forget about their soft skills as well.Software engineering as a profession, he added, is really a team sport that prizes communication, coordination, and collaboration."Computer science is an evergreen profession, as it is not about the tools but more about the mindset and product," Kan said."We don't define the worth of a carpenter by her tools or a chef by his knives, but by the furniture or dishes they create. It is the same with a computer science-trained professional using tools such as AI."

AI won't kill your computer science degree, professors say

The December 24, 1999 hijack of the Indian Airlines flight is getting a series treatment at Netflix with <keyword id="19913032" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anubhav-sinha" source="keywords">Anubhav Sinha</keyword> attached as creator and director. According to the makers, the series revolves around "the 24th December 1999 hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight IC 814 which was en route from Kathmandu to New Delhi. It was taken to Kandahar. The hijack lasted seven days and while the crew and passengers suffered, officers back home tried to find a solution to bring them home." Sinha, known for films such as "Mulk", "Article 15" and "Bheed", said it was a responsibility to be as authentic as possible while working on the series. "When I started doing research, almost everyone remembers a few things about the hijack, and what all happened during the process. I realised it is a very complex story and a lot of things happened in those seven days and not many people know about it. "I met a lot of officers, passengers, the pilot, and there was a lot more to share. We have put it all in the show... We had to make it factually correct and yet dramatic and engaging... It was an interesting process," the director said at the Next on Netflix event here. Netflix announces series on 1999 Kandahar hijack, Anubhav Sinha to direct show

YouTube announces Winners of first India edition of YouTube Works Awards

If things work as planned, <keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> will have at least two operational metro lines in 2020 connecting the western suburbs of the city. The two corridors, Metro Line-2A (Dahisar-DN Nagar) and Metro Line-7 (Dahisar East-Andheri East), are proposed to be commissioned simultaneously in 2020, the <keyword id="64095" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Metropolitan-Region-Development-Authority">Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority</keyword> (MMRDA) said in a statement. MMRDA has not yet received possession of land for a car depot for Metro Line-7 as the land parcel is currently with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
 MMRDA had proposed to give AAI another land in Gorai in lieu of their land. However, currently, this land has got a stay by the Bombay High Court as it had been earmarked for a law university.
 Meanwhile, MMRDA has also claimed that corridors, Line-2B (DN Nagar-Mandale), Line-4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali) and Line-6 (Swami Samarth Nagar-Vikhroli), will be operational by 2021.
 The Supreme Court has restrained MMRDA from chopping trees for construction of the Metro Line-4 and asked to maintain status quo on felling of trees for the project. It had also sought replies from the MMRDA and the state.
 The ambitious Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro-3 corridor, being implemented by the <keyword id="117023" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-metro">Mumbai Metro</keyword> Rail Corporation (MMRC), has been facing several roadblocks and also missed its deadlines, which is now expected to be commissioned in 2021. After the change of dispensation in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered a stay on the construction of a metro car-shed for Metro Line-3 in <keyword id="6370614" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aarey">Aarey</keyword> colony, touted as the city's green lungs. Protests by locals, NGOs and the chief minister's son who is now a Cabinet minister, Aditya Thackeray, led to Uddhav Thackeray making this announcement soon after taking charge.
 "Once completed, these five lines -- 2A, 7, 2B, 4 and 6 -- with an aggregate worth of Rs 44,869 crore are expected to serve more than 50 lakh commuters at around 98 stations across the city," the MMRDA said.
 These lines are expected to make a considerable commuter shift by 35 per cent, thus easing the gruelling grind that the suburban rail network is, it said.
 "We are overcoming the biggest challenge one might face, which was to do these development projects without having to completely stop the vehicular traffic even for 10 minutes. It will be an accomplishment to showcase to the entire world. Mumbaikars have shown great patience. Now, it is time to reap rewards," MMRDA Commissioner R A Rajeev said.
 Apart from these, Mumbai will also witness works on projects like Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) and the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor having an aggregate cost of Rs 31,430 crore. 
 The ambitious Rs 17,843-crore MTHL project will be connecting Sewri with Nhava Sheva and help solve the traffic congestion in the island city by improving connectivity between Mumbai and <keyword id="57321" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Navi-Mumbai">Navi Mumbai</keyword>. "Besides these, there are several other bridges and connectors which will be beneficial to Mumbaikars. From Deepak Parekh to Vodafone CEO Nick Read —  5 times corporates criticised Indian government and ran into trouble

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="1583080" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="AirAsia-India">AirAsia India</keyword>, which plans to start operations sometime this year, knows it will have to fight hard with existing carriers for a piece of the market. Actually, the battle with rivals has already begun, even before <keyword id="82750" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tony-Fernandes">Tony Fernandes</keyword>’s joint venture with the <keyword id="6360721" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Tatas">Tatas</keyword> takes wing. The latest round is being fought in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), with the incumbents strenuously objecting to the grant of an air operator’s permit to AirAsia India and complaining that the new entrant will disrupt industry “equilibrium”. 
 Gurgaon-based low-cost carrier <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indigo">IndiGo</keyword>, the country’s airline largest by <keyword id="34527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="market-share">market share</keyword>, and the Federation of <keyword id="1446" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="indian-airlines">Indian Airlines</keyword> lobby group have both objected to AirAsia’s entry. The letters, reviewed by ET, were in response to a public notice from DGCA seeking objections and suggestions on granting the permit. A DGCA official told ET that the views would be taken into consideration and a decision arrived at “soon”.

IndiGo President Aditya Ghosh said the relaxation of foreign direct investment rules in September 2012 had not been aimed at helping set up new projects but was meant to act as a lifeline for loss-making airline companies laden with debt. 
 “IndiGo’s primary objection opposing the application of <keyword id="2069477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="AirAsia-India-Private-Ltd">AirAsia India Private Ltd</keyword> for grant of licence to operate a new greenfield scheduled airline in India is based on the grounds that it is not permitted under the foreign direct investment policy as enunciated by the government,” the letter said. “The reason and rationale of the policy was to provide the opportunity for existing airlines to access muchneeded capital, improve the viability through expanding route networks and skills from international airlines,” it added. Both representations are identical except for some changes. 
 <keyword id="43642" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="FIA">FIA</keyword>’s letter has been signed by the associate director of the lobby group, Ujjwal Dey. The association represents <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword>, GoAir, SpiceJet, IndiGo and <keyword id="6373962" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kingfisher-Airlines">Kingfisher Airlines</keyword>, the last of which hasn’t been flying since October 2012. 
 
The points have been raised before, Ghosh said in an SMS reply to queries. “IndiGo has not raised any new objections,” Ghosh said. “Subsequent to the objections filed by the FIA on behalf of Jet Airways, Jet Lite, SpiceJet and GoAir on February 11, IndiGo only sent a letter on February 17 to the DGCA in support of some of these objections.” It should be pointed out that IndiGo is the country’s only carrier that has consistently been making profit. As an unlisted company, it’s not obliged to make quarterly earnings announcements. 
 
FIA and IndiGo both said a new entrant is not in the “long-term interest of existing airlines and consumers of the country.” They add: “The new joint ventures would have the opportunity to unfairly compete with the existing airlines, with huge losses and starved of capital, and thereby ensure that the existing airlines become even more vulnerable which could result in their ultimate closure.” FIA said the service proposed by AirAsia would result in “wasteful duplication” and “diversion of traffic” from existing airlines. IndiGo said that under “no circumstances” was the aviation sector ready to “inherit a fresh airline”. 
 
IndiGo and FIA also said a damaging price war was likely to ensue, which would “only lead to cumulative losses”. But that should also be read in the context of AirAsia having stopped international operations to four Indian cities, which would indicate that the local carriers flying those routes have been competitive, as ET reported on February 15. 
 
According to the submissions of both IndiGo and FIA, the accumulated losses of existing airlines as of March 2013 have hit Rs 77,000 crore. A senior aviation ministry official said the objections weren’t a surprise. 
 “We had expected such comments from the airline industry, but we have been very clear that the <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword> policy is for both greenfield and brownfield airlines,” said the person, who didn’t want to be named. “However, the final call remains with the DGCA.” 
 It’s pertinent to note that Subramanian Swamy’s petition against AirAsia’s application is coming up for hearing in the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Friday. FIA’s petition has been tagged along with that of Swamy. IndiGo had previously welcomed the prospect of competition.
