Mohit Suri’s Malang earns over ₹15 crore and bad reviews in two days

<br /> Telling the tale of a Kashmiri artist Noor, played by Kapur, who falls in love with Firdaus (a red-haired Kaif) before discovering that there is more to her than what meets the eyes. Daughter of Begum (played by <keyword id="6358125" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tabu">Tabu</keyword>), she is not as easy to get as one would think, and how and why the conflict of Kashmir plays its part in the movie is what could make it a cinematographic gem, thanks to the surreal beauty of Kashmir.<br />

The trailer starts with Kapur narrating how his younger self fell in love with Firdaus when they were kids. Noor is an upcoming artist, supported well by his lady love who wants him to be presentable and gets disappointed when he comes to an exhibition wearing tattered shoes.<br />

Enters Begum, the ravishing Tabu, also sporting red hair, who has had some issues in her past love life, which explains why she tries to keep her daughter away from Noor. But just as we start to think that it’s another movie in which the lead pair would overcome their financial diversity and their parents’ disapproval, Noor can be seen saying this to Firdaus:<br />

<br />
This is when Kashmir, and the long-standing conflict that it has with the Indian government, takes a character of her own in this movie. Seen with Kaif in this scene is Rahul Bhat, who was last seen in <em>Ugly</em>.<br />
<br />
How maturely Kapoor has handled the sensitive topic, and how beautifully has he been able to showcase Kashmir in its true beauty is what makes the movie worth the wait. The music is binding, and as per the cinematography, let’s just say that you can’t take a bad picture in Kashmir.<br />
<br />
As much as we love Tabu, we can never take it off our mind that the role was first offered to Rekha, who could have added a magnificent stroke of her own to this character. Not that Tabu won’t do justice to it; she has proved her mettle time and again and continues to be a respected actor, but there is something about this character that Rekha comes to our mind on its own, and we can’t help but wonder how beautiful she would have looked as Begum Hazrat.<br />

For one, Bollywood has gone big in every sense of the term. That Entered Rs 100 Crore Club In 2013

<br /><ul><li>Kapoor’s performance as the all powerful arms dealer Shelly Rungta is about perfect paradoxes.</li><li>Remakes are generally tough acts to follow, especially if the original’s cast toplines Tom Hiddleston.</li><li>Kapoor was a part of another global series called 24 and played the lead character in its Hindi avatar too.<br /></li></ul>If you are not a 90s kid, then you probably need an introduction to pretty much every icon of that era – be it Sony’s Walkman, the original 007 Sean Connery, the supersonic Concorde aircraft, Mithun Chakraborty’s dance moves and even the item songs before they were called that. But the one 90s icon that needs no formal introduction is Anil – ‘My Name Is Lakhan’ – Kapoor. From serenading Madhuri Dixit in the iconic Dhak Dhak song in Beta in 1992, Kapoor’s <em>joie de vivre </em>makes him the rightful successor of the evergreen Jitendra, who was not only nicknamed the Jumping Jack after his high-octane energy but also endorsed vitality pills called 30 Plus for decades.<br /><br />Kapoor’s performance in the Night Manager as the all powerful arms dealer Shelly Rungta is about perfect paradoxes – in one instant he charms birds or should we say birdies and in the next instant effortlessly kills with his bare hands (and a little help of a writing instrument) and yet there isn’t a spot of blood on his bespoke cream suit.<br /><br />He pulls off the over the top scenes with the same conviction as he played the role of an autistic man in <em>Eeshwar</em>. When it comes to dialogue delivery and style, there is none that even comes close to <keyword id="6354700" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="anil-kapoor" source="Orion">Anil Kapoor</keyword>. A <em>paisa vasool</em> moment in the mini series is when AK, in his laconic drawl, advises Aditya Roy Kapur, who essays the role of a soldier/hotel manager turned reluctant spy, to never know the real man behind the expensive suit.<br /><br />Remakes are generally tough acts to follow, especially if the original’s cast toplines Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, Hugh Laurie, Elizabeth Debicki and is directed by Oscar winner Susanne Bier. Attempting remakes of popular shows or movies is not for the faint hearted, look no further than last year’s epic disaster Lal Singh Chaddha – a remake of the iconic Tom Hanks-starrer Forrest Gump. But Anil Kapoor has managed to duck this trend not once but twice.<br /><br />Kapoor was a part of another global series called 24 and played the lead character in its Hindi avatar too. Both mini series have enthralled audiences primarily because of the 66-year old actor, who still looks convincing as an eight-year old child’s father. Kapoor eases in viewers with his easygoing charm in the first part of the series, where he is mostly seen enjoying the high life with his arm candy Kaveri (Sobhita Dhulipala) in his yacht, private jets and mansions. He is the classic modern-day archetype of Ravan, who also lives in Lanka.<br /><br />As the father of Rhea and Sonam Kapoor, much loved fashion icons, Anil Kapoor does not disappoint. In fact, he has his fashion chops in place alright with his bespoke suits and carefully crushed linen shirts. But there’s more to the concluding part of the mini series than Anil Kapoor’s sartorial style. Kapoor completely dominates the second part of the Hindi remake of the Night Manager with his menacing presence.<br /><br />Kapoor dominates not just the screen. There’s something particularly appealing about the bad boys of spy thrillers, but he upstages Aditya Roy Kapur, who is the undercover agent Shaan Sengupta inside Shelly Rungta’s Golden Lanka. Kapur is the good guy who pretends to go rogue as he works with RAW agent Tillotama Shome to uncover Shelly’s unholy arms business that spreads from West Asia through Myanmar and Bangladesh. The second part of the series circles back to Dhaka, where it all began with the death of Safina, a minor girl trapped in a marriage with an underworld don.<br /><br />The storytelling of the Hindi Night Manager is by and large straight out of the playbook of any spy thriller, barring some underwhelming performances. The tomfoolery by the two RAW agents are cringe-worthy and not binge worthy. The lean and mean avatar of Aditya Roy Kapur is welcome after his movie <em>Gumraah</em>. ARK fails to charm or impress with his revenge but Kapoor does both in equal measure as the villain. Give us bad boys any day.

The combined entity will start trading with the name PVR-INOX on exchanges in March 2023 and their combined financials would be reported from 4QFY23.<br /><br />The multiplex behemoth now owns more than 1,650 screens across 350 properties, in 110 cities.<br /><br />“PVR-INOX now controls 18% screen share (43% share in multiplex screens in India) and 30% box-office share (over 50% share of multiplex box office). The merged entity commands the highest multiplex market share in all key regions of India. PVR-INOX would become the fifth-largest listed multiplex chain globally by screen count with the highest number of admissions per screen (around 127,000 admissions/screen in 2019),” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. <br /><br />The combined entity aims to open 180-200 screens per year, across formats, in the next two years. “Capex per year would be ₹8-8.5 billion (₹800-850 crore). Over 40% new screen openings will come from the South as it remains underpenetrated,” said the report. <br /><br />While merged entity gains the lion’s share, real issue still remains poor content <br /><br />While the merged entity can definitely achieve bigger goals, analysts believe the real issue still remains poor content leading to flop movies on screen. <br /><br />“The management has guided for annual synergy benefits of ₹2.25 billion (₹225 crore) at the EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) level in the next 12-24 months,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities.<br /><br />Analysts say that the merged entity has no real competitor and should remain focused on strengthening its position at the cost of single-screen theatres and smaller chains. Yet, there are challenges that all multiplexes will face bringing in the mega footfalls. <br /><br />For one, the Hindi cinema industry itself is facing the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/its-not-bollywood-films-its-the-superstars-that-people-seem-to-be-tired-of/articleshow/92382077.cms">shifting trend and migration of audiences to South movies</a> which captured audiences with larger-than-life characters.<br /><br />Rapid adoption of OTT, proliferation of social media and an active ‘Boycott Bollywood’ campaign and higher ticket prices have impacted footfalls in theatres, say analysts at Emkay Global.<br /><br />“While focus of the merged entity now shifts to realising synergies, the crucial issue of footfall recovery remains moot. Post-Covid, we have witnessed a clear dichotomy in box-office performance, with a high proportion of movies turning out to be duds; we believe the main culprit is the sub-par content quality, punctured by the weak critic and audience reviews,” said a report by Emkay Global. <br /><br /><strong>Not star power, alone <br /></strong>It’s because of the increasing Southern push that <keyword id="4568700" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PVR-INOX" source="Orion">PVR Inox</keyword> are planning to boost the addition of new cinemas there. <br /><br />“With Bollywood content not up to the mark, footfalls have not seen a meaningful uptick post Covid. Only select movies with differentiated offerings have managed to taste success at the box office. As we have emphasised in the past too, Bollywood’s recovery is critical to box-office collections, with regional and Hollywood contribution being only sporadic in nature,” said the report. <br /><br />Bollywood continues to witness poor movie performance with most movies including Amitabh Bachchan-starrer <em>Goodbye</em> and <em>Uunchai</em>, Akshay Kumar’s<em> Ram Setu</em> and Ranveer Singh’s <em>Cirkus</em> not meeting expectations except for <em>Drishyam 2</em> and <em>Pathaan</em>.<br /><br />“Going ahead too, we believe that star power alone cannot drive collections, if there is no differentiating factor in the movie,” said the Emkay Global report. <br /><br />In Q3 FY23, only one Bollywood movie i.e Drishyam 2 managed to break the ₹100 crore box office barrier. <br /><br />“CY22 has been one of the worst years for Bollywood, with very few movies finding traction. A mere 7% of the major movies that were released in the CY21/22 managed to recover their investment and yielded some profit. Prior to Covid, this was close to 30%, with more than 40% of movies doing well in CY19,” said a report by Emkay. <br /><br />While Inox-PVR have a bigger screen presence, they need what it takes to PVR-INOX, now fifth largest listed multiplex chain globally, awaits good movies

<ul><li>March 2022 turned out to be the best months for both <keyword id="799" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pvr" source="Orion">PVR</keyword> and <keyword id="6407732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inox" source="Orion">INOX</keyword> Leisure due to stellar movie releases.</li><li>The companies can still replicate the March success due to the strong movie pipeline set up for this year.</li><li>“2022 or financial year 2023 will be one of the best for the Indian film industry,” INOX CEO Alok Tandon said.</li></ul>Afer a stellar March business, movie theatres are hoping to make a comeback — but they need movies that can move the audiences away from OTTs and TVs. <br /><br />This is the view held by five brokerage firms — ICICI Securities/Direct, Motilal Oswal, Prabhudas Lilladher and ShareKhan. They believe that good movies can help them replicate the March success which came with superhits like the controversial Kashmir Files; Rajamouli’s RRR, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi, followed up by KGF 2 in April. <br /><br />“They witnessed a March — which was the best ever in the history, led by superlative performances of movies,” ICICI Direct said in its views on PVR and INOX both. The March footfalls made up for half of the Jan-March quarters footfalls in theaters. <br /><br />But both these companies need more than a good month to turn things around. A strong recovery in footfalls and sales of these listed theatre companies will be driven by ‘strong content slate lines’, as per ICICI Direct. If all goes well, it estimates that both these companies can cross their pre-covid earnings in the current financial year. <br /><br />These companies are in desperate need of a ‘recovery worthy’ movie releases. All the three Khans have movies planned this year — which had become a rare occurrence even in the years before the pandemic. <br /><br />Aamir Khan has Lal Singh Chaddha, that’s a remake of Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump. Salman Khan also promises another movie from his formulaic stable — called Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali. The King of Khans — Shah Rukh Khan too is releasing a movie after four years called Pathan. <br /><br />The fact that these Khan movies are ‘much-awaited’ can help drive footfalls. INOX CEO Alok Tandon spoke of an influx of good releases in FY23, in a conversation with Business Insider India. <br /><br />“2022 or financial year 2023 will be one of the best for the Indian film industry… I feel like we have some very, very strong lineup,” Tandon said. He also confirmed that March was their best month yet and the movie business had been operating in limited capacity over the last few years due to Covid-19. <br /><br />Then other bankable stars like Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar too did not live up to its expectations. <br /><br />Kangana Ranaut’s Dhakkad, Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey, Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam too failed to impress the audiences. Brahmastra, Laal Singh Chaddha and Avatar — movies that can determine the fortunes of INOX and PVR

By Komal Panchamatia <p>Mumbai, Apr 12 () Filmmaker Anurag Basu believes once the COVID-19 crisis ends, the entertainment industry will be defined by "pre-corona and post-corona" eras.</p><p>The director was looking forward to his next, "Ludo" this month, the release of which was pushed after the pandemic hit India.</p><p>Basu said cinema will witness a complete shift in terms of storytelling and mode of entertainment.</p><p>"The cinema and entertainment world will be defined as 'pre-corona and post-corona' era. Storytelling will change and there will be some people, who are getting used to watching stuff on OTT, so that may take the front seat now. </p><p>"I believe now corona will become the backdrop and subject for many films for years to come till the world sees the next big crisis," Basu told  in an interview.</p><p>The director believes many people will come out as a completely different personality post the lockdown, and it will also influence their choice of content.</p><p>"For some people, the view on life has changed. It will affect their likes and dislikes and the kind of things they want to watch and not watch. They will see the world through a different prism.</p><p>"People will not see anything meaningless and that will push people to make more meaningful stuff. This is just a guess. And that's what we do right? I am only guessing the viewer's choices," he added. </p><p>Basu said he is also doubtful whether people would be comfortable about returning to the theatres after the lockdown.</p><p>He hopes Bollywood producers would work together to chalk out a release calendar which lures the audiences to come to the cinema halls. </p><p>"I hope all the producers discuss what works best for each of them and not fight for dates or cut into each other's business. If we are together, we can manage."</p><p>From both creative and business points of view, Basu said, like any other sector, the film industry too will be incurring losses due to the lockdown, but the filmmaker is more concerned about daily wage workers.</p><p>"My heart goes out to the daily wage workers, who make for 75 per cent in any film unit, as they will be hit the most with all the shoots being stalled."</p><p>His next film "Ludo", a comedy anthology, was scheduled to hit the theatres on April 24, but the director is still unsure about the new release date. </p><p>"We were all ready and geared up for the April 24 release. Looking at the current scenario, I'm not expecting 'Ludo' to hit the theatres soon. As soon as we decide our date we will launch our trailer. Earlier we were supposed to launch it with 'Sooryavashi' release."</p><p>Set in a quintessential Indian metro, "Ludo" follows four different stories with people dealing with unavoidable jeopardies of life.</p>Produced by T-Series, the film features Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanya Malhotra, Rohit Saraf and Pankaj Tripathi. 1. The first time we saw Shraddha Kapoor on the silver screen was when she donned the role of a studious geek Aparna Khanna who volunteers in a poker experiment. The year was 2010 and the movie that marked her debut was <em><keyword id="16035" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Teen-Patti">Teen Patti</keyword></em>, in which she starred along Amitabh Bachchan and R. Madhavan. The movie could not do well at the box office, resulting in a career setback for Shraddha. 3. After taking a year-long break, the young Kapoor lass returned to the screens with the musical romantic saga <em>Aashiqui 2</em>. The movie, which also had Aditya Roy Kapur, was highly successful and Shraddha Kapoor was noticed for her good looks as well as acting prowess.<br />

4. Next in line for the lady was a guest role in Dharma Productions’ <em>Gori Tere Pyaar Mein</em>, in which she played Vasudha, a Tamilian girl in love with a Sikh boy. The lead pair of the movie was Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, and Shraddha’s role was limited to a few scenes.<br />

5. Came 2014 and Shraddha was seen as Ayesha in another musical romantic thriller <em>Ek Villain</em>. Her role was that of a young girl who falls in love with a goon and transforms him into a family man, only to be killed by a psychopath killer. Her role in the movie was limited to a few flashback scenes other than some songs, given the fact that her character gets killed in the first 15 minutes.<br />

6. Towards the end of 2014, we saw the pretty lady doing a role in <em>Haider</em>, for ace director Vishal Bhardwaj. She portrayed the role of Arshiya, a young Kashmiri journalist in love with the main lead, played by Shahid Kapoor. Her performance and hard work in the movie to get into the skin of a Kashmiri girl were appreciated.<br />

7. She also did an item number, called <em>Dance Basanti</em>, in the movie <em>Ungli</em>.<br />
