The men's attire, the classic kurta bundi silhouette, had panel detailing in the colours of the national flag, safari pockets, and rolled-up sleeves. The women's saris featured a pre-pleated design for convenience and ease of wear. Their borders featured the panelling in tricolour. They completed the look in gold brocade sneakers. What has not gone down well for some is the way brand logo has been incorporated prominently in the borders of the garments, the fabric used and the fits. Tahiliani's team said he was unavailable for comment when PTI reached out for a response. However, he defended himself in an interview with NDTV when he said he stood by his work and said the opening ceremony was not a couture show. "We wanted the team in the colours of the tricolour as most countries follow their flag and that was visible from afar. It would have been very easy for me to send them in zardozi vests. But it's not appropriate," Tahiliani said. He added that he and his team had only three weeks to prepare the costumes. "I can't weave handloom for 300 uniforms in that time. The shoes were brocade, brocade from Benares," he told NDTV. Tahiliani also slammed "armchair critics" who accused him of charging a heavy sum for crafting these designs. "This was paid for by Tasva. There was an opportunity for the designer to display the art of our culture through embroidery or hand paint!! "It was a work of absolute mediocrity and looked shabby!!! I really hope the sports family stops compromising on quality for our sportspersons looks on court and off court!!!! (sic)" Gutta wrote, posting photographs of herself from the 2016 Rio Olympics with fellow badminton players PV Sindhu, Ashwini Ponnappa and tennis star Rohan Bopanna. A user reshared her post and wrote: "Hello Tarun Tahiliani! I have seen better Sarees sold in Mumbai streets for Rs.200 than these ceremonial uniforms you've 'designed'. Another user said designers for the Mongolia and Sri Lanka contingents did a better job dressing their teams. Others shared videos of the designs as reimagined by AI and wrote Tahiliani's design can be "easily replaced" by technology. One user said the kurtas were "creased", the blouse "poor fitting" and the sari was "not even white". "I don't know what Tarun Tahiliani was thinking while scribbling these pathetic uniforms, did our champions really bad. The women's saree look like 'before' shot in an Ujala Ad. While menswear, it's just looks a bit ..ringard if I may say in spirit of Paris! (sic)" commented another. According to Ashish Mukul, brand head, Tasva, the ceremonial attire for Team India is "crafted with a profound sense of national pride and an aim to balance tradition with modernity". In a statement, Mukul said the garments draw inspiration from the Indian flag, "symbolizing unity, and pride, which is one of the richest ways of representing India". He said the contemporary silhouettes, such as the Bundi jacket and pre-pleated sari, were carefully chosen to ensure "both comfort and functionality" for the athletes. "The fabrics, including cotton and viscose crepe, are selected for their practical and aesthetic qualities, as our athletes would be out in the open for almost 6 hours during the event. The use of Ikat-inspired prints and modern elements is a deliberate choice to reflect modern India. Our intention is to create an attire that represents India's rich heritage and ensure our athletes feel comfortable and confident," he added. As a result, shares of Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC have been the top loser among its peers, slipping 21% in 2023 so far. Rival HDFC Asset Management Company posted a sequential 2% rise in profit to ₹376 crore in the March quarter while its revenue fell 3% to ₹541 crore. However, in the case of HDFC AMC, analysts feel that the impact of the total expense ratio (TER) changes on the company’s stock may be limited due to strong AUM growth and potential benefits from its HDFC Bank parentage. As per the proposed changes in the Finance Bill, investors in debt funds will have to pay tax according to their income slabs. Investors had so far benefited from indexation while calculating long-term capital gains from debt funds but this will now longer be available effective 1 April. Adding to it, as per reports, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is considering taking action against big fund houses that charge very high expense ratios from their customers. Currently as per SEBI’s rules, mutual funds can charge a total expense ratio (TER) of up to 2.25%, if the AUM reaches ₹500 crore. However, the regulator might now reduce this expense amount to benefit investors. Also, since distributors earn more commission by selling new funds, there are cases of mis-selling. Mutual fund company stocks bleed this year, thanks to tax hit on debt funds and strict expense ratio norms

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd notes that the market traded volatile for yet another session and ended nearly unchanged. After a flat start, the Nifty gradually inched higher for most of the session; however, sharp profit-taking in the final hours trimmed all the gains. "Meanwhile, a mixed trend continued on the sectoral front, with energy, auto, and realty performing well, while FMCG and pharma lagged slightly. The broader indices continued to attract buying interest, helping market breadth to end on the advancing side. Rotational participation from the heavyweights is maintaining a positive tone amid consolidation, and we expect this prevailing trend to continue. We are targeting 25,100 in the Nifty and suggest focusing on accumulating quality stocks on dips", he continued. As per Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares, "Broader markets extended their streak of outperformance as Mid and Smallcaps advanced further with gains of 0.45% &amp; 0.86% respectively. Nifty50 has made a DOJI candlestick pattern which indicates an indecisiveness between the bulls and bears. A psychological level of 25,000 will continue to act as a strong barrier while immediate support is placed at 24,800 followed by 24,660". Osho Krishan, Senior Analyst - Technical &amp; Derivatives, Angel One Ltd highlights that the Indian equity markets opened the session steadily, drawing insights from mixed global cues. The benchmark index gradually gained momentum post the initial opening hour and made strides towards the last swing high. However, the bears made a comeback at the highs, leading to a modest correction. Despite multiple efforts, the bulls were unable to challenge the record high, and the day ultimately concluded on a flat note. "Technically, the 25,000 milestone withholds the daunting task for the bulls, and a sustainable breakthrough could only direct the next leg of the rally in the index. On the lower end, 24,600 is likely to be seen as intermediate support, followed by the sacrosanct demand at the 24500 zone in the comparable period. The advance-decline ratio continues to highlight the dominance of the bulls, particularly in the mid and small-cap segments, which bodes well for market sentiments. Thus, one needs to focus on such themes for having an outperformance while the key indices are witnessing some timidness at their pivotal zones", continued Krishan.

Analysts expect the mutual industry’s assets under management (AUM) to grow by 11-13% in the next five years to ₹57 trillion and Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC to benefit from strong industry prospects given it is among the top five players in the country. “Going forward, the overall industry’s AUM is projected to grow between 11-13% from 2021-2026 and reach ₹57 trillion, largely driven by a pick-up in corporate earnings following stronger economic growth, higher disposable income and investable household surplus, improving technology and expanding internet footprint and better awareness of mutual funds as long-term wealth creators,” said Religare Broking in a report. “Moreover, the fund house stands to benefit from strong industry prospects as it has a diversified product portfolio and also offers customised solutions to meet financial goals,” added the report.
