If one’s tracking the sector, the war-like situation between the existing and emerging cement giants is pretty evident. For the uninitiated, Aditya Birla Group-backed <keyword id="19963567" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ultratech-Cement" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ultratech Cement" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ultratech Cement">Ultratech Cement</keyword> and <keyword id="19955648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adani-Group" source="keywords">Adani Group</keyword> have been at loggerheads for increased market share in recent years. And now, JSW Cement also seems to be gearing up to challenge the potential duopoly. As conglomerates aggressively acquire smaller players to achieve market domination, the cement industry in India right now resembles an eighteenth-century battlefield. The battle has significantly escalated this year, but this trend of acquiring regional cement companies can be traced back to 2018 when Ultratech acquired Binani Cement. Since then, both Adani Group and Birla Group have been capturing checkposts all over India, one by one. Ultratech acquired Binani Cement to strengthen its base in the western region and this week, India Cement, for the southern states. Adani has also acquired the Hyderabad-based Penna Cement this year, after acquiring majority stakes in Ambuja Cements and ACC in 2022. But why the obsession with cement? <h2>Why are the Titans clashing for…cement?</h2>India's infrastructure boom is in full swing, and whoever controls the cement supply holds the key to this construction kingdom. Adani Group has been known to follow an acquire &amp; dominate strategy for capturing market segments. <keyword id="19907441" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group" source="keywords">Aditya Birla Group</keyword>, however, has dominated the cement industry in India through Ultratech for a while now. The answer to the above question may simply lie in establishing the leadership moat for themselves. With even-growing public and private spending on infrastructure, both players want to capture the majority share to dominate the supplies of cement, which is essential for construction. <h2>Where is the sector heading?</h2>While both Adani and Aditya Birla groups have locked horns to acquire CK Birla’s Orient Cement for a while now, a new hurdle threatens their dominance. As per an Economic Times report, Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Cement has now started to evaluate the acquisition of the promoter stake in Orient Cement. As an emerging front, JSW Cement also aims to reach 50 MT per annum by 2030. However, two other major players, Shree Cement and Dalmia Bharat, already have 53 MTPA and 43 MTPA capacity. <div type="image" title="Birla Vs Adani" msid="112196675" hostid="261" sizebytes="284160" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Look back at major acquisitions in the cement sector&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> However, with over a dozen acquisitions over the last decade, both Ultratech and Adani Group are by far the largest players in the sector eyeing over 200 MT per annum by 2030. <h2>What about the prices?</h2>Will consumers benefit from this cutthroat competition to industry domination? In the short term at least, yes! While lower prices might sound appealing, it's essential to keep an eye on quality as consolidation in the manufacturing sector is always tricky. We don't want to end up with buildings crumbling like cookies. And let's not forget about the little guys. This consolidation of power into a few mega-corporations could squeeze out smaller players, reducing competition and potentially leading to higher prices in the long run. <h2>I think I’ve seen this film before….</h2>The current atmosphere of the cement industry feels reminiscent of what happened in the telecom industry in India in 2016 i.e. the infamous tussle of tariffs. As Reliance Industries launched Jio, it disrupted the entire segment and forced other telecom companies to compete on their terms. As a result, the tariffs fell sharply, companies shut and brands merged, but Jio still claims 40% of the market share in India in terms of subscriber count. Moreover, experts feel that the change in power dynamics in both these industries, cement and telecom, have direct ties to the current government’s industrial policy. Government policies seem to favour companies that have acquired a dominant position in distinct sectors of the economy, which in India’s case are led by two of the richest men in Asia — Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani. This strategy of adopting ‘<keyword id="1327299" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-champions" source="Orion">National Champions</keyword>’ is seemingly inspired by South Korea’s <keyword id="4933297" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chaebols" source="Orion">Chaebols</keyword> and Japan’s Zaibatsu conglomerates that came into existence decades ago. <h2>From corporate drama to k-drama: Chaebols</h2>The term Chaebol might ring a bell if you've watched K-dramas. They are family-owned business conglomerates in South Korea. This business structure originated in the 1960s and got so popular that it made its way into Korean pop culture. While chaebols have fueled the rapid growth of the Korean economy, concerns about their opaque governance and controlling shareholder interests often deter external investors. Japan’s zaibatsu were also similar financial and industrial conglomerates that were major forces in Japan during World War II. Korea’s Hyundai and Japan’s Mitsubishi are some prime examples of this structure. <h2>Growth of the Goliaths</h2>Viral Acharya, the former Deputy Governor of the RBI, highlights the decade-old trend of the central government achieving economic growth outcomes by working with large conglomerates in part, rather than with state governments. In his conference paper for the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity in March 2023, he demonstrates this pattern with examples from multiple sectors. “By way of specific examples, the share of the Top 5 groups by sales in Civil Engineering and Construction rose from 31% in 2016 to 42% in 2021, in Telecommunications from 65% to over 84%, and in the Retail trade sector from under 44% to over 65%. Similarly, the share of Top-5 groups by Assets rose sharply by 2021 to 68% in the Manufacturing of Basic Metals, 26% in the Manufacturing of Chemicals, 90% in the Manufacturing of Refined Petroleum and Coke, and 47% in the Manufacturing of Non-metallic Mineral Products (including cement and other building materials),” writes Acharya. While this strategy of ‘National Champions’ has benefitted the telecom sector, it has its caveats. The acceleration in the growth may lead to an oligopolistic economy, thereby restricting the entry of new players and stifling innovation. Additionally, a multi-dimensional concentration of power poses the threat of crony capitalism. <h2>National champions: checks and challenges</h2>There’s more to this debate. Arvind Subramanian and Josh Felman, in their paper titled ‘India’s Stalled Rise’ note that the collective impact of this strategy could be more adverse in India, more than anywhere else. They explain that the two big conglomerates — Adani Group and Ambani-led Reliance “have interests that extend throughout the economy, in defence production, ports and airports, energy, natural gas, petroleum, digital platforms, telecommunications, entertainment, media, retail, textiles, financial payments, and education.” Chaebols and Zaibatsu have/had their demerits that range from autocratic decision-making dubbed as ‘imperialistic management’ to the slow inclination of the market towards an oligopolistic structure. However, they weren’t shielded from international competition, nor was this strategy of creating ‘national champions’ shaped using government regulation. They were prevalent in sectors that faced competition internationally, like Hyundai in automobile manufacturing, keeping them in check. The lack of a similar system of checks and balances in India may lead to deeper implications of this strategy of ‘national champions.’ Viral Acharya further notes that they “grew not just at the expense of the smallest firms, but also of the next largest firms” and empirically established a causal link between market power and markups (broadly, profit). At a point when India has seen a monumental shift in infrastructure and looks to capture the market share that China could evacuate, the implications of a tilted policy could prove detrimental. Cementing dominance: Birla vs Adani, of Chaebols, conglomerates, and National Champions

The company had posted a consolidated profit of Rs 2,454 crore in the year-ago period, <keyword id="20129733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindalco" source="keywords">Hindalco</keyword> Industries said in a regulatory filing. In a statement, the company said the consolidated PAT in the first quarter of FY'25 was Rs 3,074 crore, compared to Rs 2,454 crore in Q1 FY24, up by 25 % year-on-year (YoY)." Total income during the quarter under review rose to Rs 57,437 crore, over Rs 53,382 crore noted in the year-ago period. The consolidated revenue for the first quarter stood at Rs 57,013 crore, up 8% YoY, on account of better realisations and efficiencies in India operations. "Hindalco reported an <keyword id="19957744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA" source="keywords">EBITDA</keyword> of Rs 7,992 crore (vs Rs 6,109 crore in Q1FY24) in Q1 FY25, up 31% YoY, driven by lower input costs and higher volumes," the statement said. "Our strong Q1 results ride on the back of consistent operational excellence and cost optimisation which allowed us to leverage the higher average metal prices. "The <keyword id="20076812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="copper" source="keywords">copper</keyword> business achieved its highest quarterly EBITDA driven by high domestic sales (especially downstream products), healthy by-product credits and better operational efficiencies following a successful planned shutdown," Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries said. The <keyword id="20472150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aluminium" source="keywords">Aluminium</keyword> India upstream business recorded an 81% growth in EBITDA over the previous year, he said. "Looking ahead, the major capital formation phase of the downstream business is near completion, and from here on, we will explore growth opportunities in the upstream business, given our strong cash position," he explained. The company said its copper business delivered a new record-breaking performance in the first quarter, with EBITDA at an all-time high of Rs 805 crore, up 52% YoY, backed by higher average copper prices and robust operations. Hindalco Q1 profit rises 25% Rs 3,074 crore on operational efficiencies, lower input costs

The union budget for 2024 introduced a slew of changes that will directly impact your pocket in the days to come. FM Sitharaman brought about significant changes in how your capital gains were taxed. Take a look at how this will impact your pocket. First off, what are capital gains? Simply put, any gains or profits you make when you sell a capital asset like your properties, investments in stock or mutual funds and more is counted as capital gains. What sets capital assets aside is their ability to generate monetary value over a long period. Depending on the time period they are held for before they are sold, <keyword id="20584761" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="long-term-capital-gains" source="keywords">long-term capital gains</keyword> (LTCG) or <keyword id="20584760" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="short-term-capital-gains" source="keywords">short-term capital gains</keyword> (STCG) is applicable. So, what has changed? In one sharp move, <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nirmala-Sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> pushed up the long-term <keyword id="20301441" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="capital-gains-tax" source="keywords">capital gains tax</keyword> from 10% previously to 12.5% now. Moreover, <keyword id="22142879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indexation-benefit" source="keywords">indexation benefit</keyword>, which reduced the total tax outgo from the investor's hands, also went away with these proposed changes. As for short-term capital gains tax, it was decreased to 15% from its previous rate of 20%. However, to ease the pain, the maximum exemption amount for long-term capital gains in a single year was increased from Rs 1,00,000 previously, to Rs 1,25,000 now. All listed securities will be considered long-term capital assets (and hence, LTCG will be levied) if they are held for a period of 12 months. For unlisted securities and other immovable properties, LTCG will be applicable post 24 months of holding them. Bonds, debentures and gold will have also have a holding period of 24 months, from the earlier duration of 36 months, in order to be eligible for long-term capital gains tax. What does indexation mean? Indexation allowed <keyword id="19900618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investors" source="keywords">investors</keyword> to account for inflation, by adding the same to their initial purchase price. This would result in a higher purchase price, significantly lowering the overall gains. But now, capital gains tax will be calculated at the actual purchase price (ouch!) with no scope to factor for inflation, which would mean a higher tax outflow from the investor's pockets. This benefit has been done away with for real estate and gold. Under indexation benefit, it is not your initial purchase, or acquisition price that is taken into consideration, but rather your indexed cost of acquisition that comes to play. This is calculated using the CII of the sale year and the purchase year. This helps in adjusting the purchase cost of your property for inflation when you are selling it. The government calculates and notifies the public of the CII (cost inflation index) every year. For instance, Aditya's father purchased a property worth Rs 40,00,000 in 2009 (FY2009-10). In 2004 (FY2024-25), he decides to sell this for around a crore. How will his tax liability be calculated? First, lets consider that he had indexation benefit. By that, his indexed cost of acquisition (there's a long formula to this) would be Rs 98,10,810, making his long-term gains at Rs 1,89,189. So, 20% of this would come down to Rs 37,837. But lets also consider if he did not have this indexation benefit. While indexation benefits have been done away with starting July 23rd, 2024, lets assume this rule came into effect at the very start of FY25, or 1st April, 2024. This would mean your total capital gain would be 12.5% of Rs 60,00,000, or a staggering Rs 7,50,000. What are the experts saying? Nilesh Sharma - President &amp; Executive Director, SAMCO Securities sees this as a double whammy which leaves much to be desired on the investors front. "It seems govt wants share in investors’ profit. At a time when the equity indices are at an all-time high, the government has tried to take a share out of the growth and the profits earned by the investors by increasing both the STT rates on derivatives and an increase in STCG and LTCG", he notes "The removal of indexation benefit for LTCG will also impact the real estate industry and will slow down the resale of residential flats /lands. There is a fear that it may also increase the proportion of cash transaction in real estate deals, which will be again be counterproductive. The government has not announced any major changes for the individual tax payers except a slight change in the tax slabs and a minor increase in the standard deduction. This too, is however applicable only in the new tax regime, leaving nothing for the tax payers who have opted for the old tax regime", continued Sharma. Palka Arora Chopra, Director, Master Capital Services Ltd notes that the removal of indexation benefits might negatively impact investor returns, leading to a short-term bearish outlook for the sector. "While the 25% increase in the Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax is manageable and not likely to deter investors significantly, the increase in short-term capital gains (STCG) tax from 15% to 20% could have a more pronounced negative impact in the medium term", she continued.

But the worst hit will be non-bank players as they will be hit on both asset and the liability sides. While they will have to pay higher rates while borrowing from banks and bond markets, they will also have to pass on higher costs to borrowers. This will slow down the rapid growth in their balance sheet, which has been driven by rapid growth in the disbursement of unsecured personal/consumer loans. According to analysts, non banking finance companies like Paytm and Bajaj Finance would be most affected by RBI’s move to tighten capital norms on unsecured loans and also loans disbursed to non banks. This will not only make lending more expensive for non banks but in many cases will also force them to raise more capital ahead of schedule. <keyword id="116253" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sbi-cards" source="Orion">SBI Cards</keyword>, Bajaj Finance, IIFL and Aditya Birla have relatively higher proportion of unsecured loans on their portfolio and, therefore, tighter capital norms will impact them the most. Unsecured personal loans account for 37% of Bajaj Finance’s loan book, while it is 21% for Aditya Birla Capital and it is 27% for IIFL (standalone), according to Jefferies. According to Jefferies, SBI Cards can see an estimated.400 basis points cut in its Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio while Bajaj Finance can see 220 basis point hair cut to Tier 1 CAR. However, both NBFCs are well capitalised and have higher return on equity (low capital consumption). “IIFL (standalone entity) and Aditya Birla Capital can see a 50-80 bps haircut to Tier 1 capital, which can lower their Tier 1 to 13%/15%. IIFL may need to infuse capital in the standalone entity; at ABFL, next phase of capital raise may get advanced,” the global investment bank said in a report. in funding costs. SBI Cards faces highest drag on Tier I CAR and highest dependence on bank-funding. The tighter norms will not impact NBFCs but even fintechs like Paytm. Loan disbursals by fintechs will also slow down from the current levels as they may find it hard to raise funds and even pass on higher cost loans to consumers. Japanese investment bank Nomura says in a report, that in the past 18 months, nearly 25%-30% of incremental growth for NBFCs has come from unsecured retail. Any moderation in unsecured credit for NBFCs will hence have an impact on both growth and profitability for NBFCs in our view. Moreover, the regulatory action comes at a time when credit costs in these segments have started to inch up. For Paytm's lending partners, higher funding costs and increased capital requirements will affect product profitability in the buy-now-pay-later and personal loans segments. Non bank lenders like private banks may also start to improve their underwriting standards after this which will impact overall growth. Jefferies says: “We also watch out for the pricing environment and ability of Paytm to pass-through hike in funding costs. In our base case earnings, we forecast consumer loan disbursal growth to normalise from 90% in FY24 to 40% in FY25 and 35% in FY26. Any additional 10 percentage point slower disbursal growth (vs. base case) in FY25/26E can lead to 5-10% impact on lending revenues and ~2-3% impact on overall contributions, which may impact break-even timelines as well. RBI crackdown on personal loans – Bajaj Finance, IIFL, Aditya Birla and SBI Cards to take a bigger hit, say analysts

As many as seven brokerage houses and investment firms have given a "buy" call for <keyword id="6391710" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="aditya-birla-capital" source="Orion">Aditya Birla Capital</keyword> shares as the financial services provider recently reported a healthy earnings in Q4 and for the entire fiscal. They are Motilal Oswal, <keyword id="48085" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="credit-suisse" source="Orion">Credit Suisse</keyword>, <keyword id="103838" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hdfc-securities" source="Orion">HDFC Securities</keyword>, ICICI Securities, <keyword id="14017217" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="investes" source="Orion">Investes</keyword>, and <keyword id="48670" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="morgan-stanley" source="Orion">Morgan Stanley</keyword>, and their target price falls in the range of Rs 130 to Rs 169. ICICI Securities pegged the highest at Rs 169, whereas Credit Suisse the lowest at Rs 130. It posted a rise of 20 per cent in its consolidated profit after tax at Rs 450 crore Q4, whereas the consolidated revenue rose 18 per cent year on year to Rs 6,962 crore. For the entire financial year FY22, the consolidated revenue rose 16 per cent to Rs 23,633 crore, whereas profit after tax rose 51 per cent to Rs 1,706 crore, which is reportedly the highest ever recorded by the company. "With the worst on asset quality behind it, the coming years will see an uptick in its growth and margin profile, lower credit costs, and better return ratios," Motilal Oswal said, adding that the asset management business is likely to churn out better profitability, driven by an improvement in revenue as well as cost rationalization. Further, brokerage house ICICI Securities believes that franchise investment, cross-sell or up-sell and leveraging digital and analytics will likely help the company boost its RoE (return on equity) profile. Looking at the FY22 performance, Investec opined that the company has mitigated Covid-19 impact and is well positioned to deliver strong earnings growth over next three years.

The pain is visible in the latest corporate earnings of some mutual fund companies. Among the top mutual fund companies Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC reported a 13% on-year decline in net profit to ₹136 crore from ₹156 crore last year. “While we are constructive on Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC’s strong and diversified distribution network, given rising competitive intensity, we believe yields will plummet faster than assets under management (AUM) growth, posing a high risk to earnings from negative operating leverage,” said analysts at HDFC Securities. The brokerage house downgraded the rating on the company’s stock to ‘Add’ from ‘Buy’. As a result, shares of Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC have been the top loser among its peers, slipping 21% in 2023 so far. Rival HDFC Asset Management Company posted a sequential 2% rise in profit to ₹376 crore in the March quarter while its revenue fell 3% to ₹541 crore. However, in the case of HDFC AMC, analysts feel that the impact of the total expense ratio (TER) changes on the company’s stock may be limited due to strong AUM growth and potential benefits from its HDFC Bank parentage. Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) is the parent company of HDFC AMC that is expected to complete its merger with HDFC Bank by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/wealth/borrow/hdfc-hdfc-bank-merger-how-will-it-impact-hdfc-home-loan-borrowers-will-home-loan-interest-rates-go-down/articleshow/99978517.cms">July this year as per reports. </a> “While we remain watchful of the proposed changes in the TER structure and HDFC AMC’s stock has corrected by c.9% over the last 3 months on fears regarding the changes, we expect the impact to be limited and current valuations (20x FY25 EPS) adequately factor in the expected cut in earnings. HDFC AMC is our top pick in the space and the stock can see a meaningful rerating in the near to medium term driven by robust AUM growth and potential benefits from HDFC Bank parentage,” said analysts at JM Financial. On the other hand, <keyword id="193636" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="uti-amc" source="Orion">UTI AMC</keyword>’s profit grew strongly to ₹86 crore in March quarter from ₹60 crore in the previous quarter and ₹54 crore during the same period last year. However, Nippon Life Asset Management’s profits were flat sequentially at ₹198.96 crore while revenue from operations fell nearly 2% at ₹325 crore. As a result, shares of all the listed asset management companies have been in the red so far in 2023 underperforming the market. The amendment in the Finance Bill that proposed to do away with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/debt-schemes-of-mfs-lose-edge-over-bank-deposits-as-budget-proposes-to-scrap-ltcg-indexation-benefits/articleshow/98965932.cms">long-term capital gains tax benefits on debt investments</a> was the latest trigger that impacted the mutual fund companies. As per the proposed changes in the Finance Bill, investors in debt funds will have to pay tax according to their income slabs. Investors had so far benefited from indexation while calculating long-term capital gains from debt funds but this will now longer be available effective 1 April. Adding to it, as per reports, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is considering taking action against big fund houses that charge very high expense ratios from their customers. Currently as per SEBI’s rules, mutual funds can charge a total expense ratio (TER) of up to 2.25%, if the AUM reaches ₹500 crore. However, the regulator might now reduce this expense amount to benefit investors. Also, since distributors earn more commission by selling new funds, there are cases of mis-selling. Mutual fund company stocks bleed this year, thanks to tax hit on debt funds and strict expense ratio norms

Government-owned and listed insurer, the <keyword id="47873" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="new-india" source="Orion">New India</keyword> Assurance Company Ltd closed FY22 with a net profit of Rs 164.27 crore, down from Rs 1,604.69 crore logged during FY21. The company's solvency margin also dropped to 1.66 times at the end of FY22 from 2.13 times at the end of FY21. During the year under review, The New <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> had logged a gross premium of Rs 36,834.61 crore as against Rs 33,046.41 crore earned in FY21. While all other lines of business showed operating profit - including the motor - the company's profit was drawn down by the huge operating loss in the health insurance segment. Last fiscal, the operating loss under the health insurance segment was Rs 4,843.93 crore, against Rs 1,459.97 crore posted during FY21. Incidentally last year, the company's crop insurance business made an operating profit of Rs 214.82 crore, up from a loss of Rs 296.08 crore in FY21.
