<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s Aadhaar card system will now use <keyword id="3735415" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facial-identification">facial identification</keyword> for eKYC. </li><li>In a phased roll-out to Aadhaar Authentication User Agencies (AUAs), <keyword id="130693" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="telecom-service-providers">telecom service providers</keyword> will be the first to implement this service starting September 15, 2018.</li><li><keyword id="30939" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="facial-recognition">Facial recognition</keyword> will be a part of a two-factor authentication should iris or fingerprint authentication fail.</li></ul>The largest <keyword id="79483" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="identification">identification</keyword> database in the world, Aadhaar, isn’t mandatory for issuing SIM cards. But, if you are planning to use your Aadhaar card for eKYC (electronic know-your-customer), the face-recognition feature will <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/technology/tech-news-technology/uidai-announces-face-recognition-for-aadhaar-from-september-15-heres-what-to-keep-in-mind-5315844/">start rolling out</a> on September 15, 2018. But, here’s the thing, when the measure was originally proposed in March, the aim was to help people who didn’t have <keyword id="102890" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="biometrics">biometrics</keyword> or poor biometrics. In the case of authentication failures and financial exclusion, the purpose of facial recognition was to ensure that people with physical disabilities or leprosy wouldn’t be kept from their pensions and provident funds. That being said, reports indicate that telecom service providers are only the first in line. The plan is for a phased rollout to cover all the other Aadhaar Authentication User Agencies (AUAs), once their devices are ready to accommodate face recognition. According to the nodal agency, the Unique Identification Authority of India (<keyword id="6355252" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="uidai">UIDAI</keyword>), the face recognition verification has been put in place to curbs incidences of fingerprint spoofing and cloning. They also indicated that the measure will also increase the accountability of telecom service providers by tightening the audit process and overall security around mobile SIMs. How does it work The Aadhaar card face recognition feature basically means that users will have to get their picture clicked when using the Aadhaar card for eKYC. Keep in mind, this doesn’t replace fingerprint or iris verification. Those are still in place, but should verification fail at that level, facial identification will be the second factor of authentication. The telecom companies, in turn, will save those photos on their database and send it across on their registered device for verification against the picture of you on file with the UIDAI. Once that’s done, the telecom service providers will have to save both photos on their database for audit purposes down the line. This isn’t a suggestion, it’s a rule with consequences involved. If the telecom companies fail to do so, UIDAI has issued a circular on the financial disincentives that they will be subject to. However, it still isn’t mandatory to fish out an Aadhaar card for obtaining a SIM. It’s only if you choose to use your Aadhaar for eKYC, that face recognition even comes into the picture. Other forms of identification are still valid as KYC documents. Earlier this year, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/nine-years-later-80-of-indians-are-still-not-convinced-the-worlds-largest-biometric-id-system-is-secure/articleshow/64406235.cms">survey</a> by Velocity MR ascertained that nearly 80% of Indians didn’t trust the Aadhaar card system. While the government has continuously reiterated that the Aadhaar database is safe, the concern isn’t with the central database being secure, but with middleman agencies that don’t keep a tight lid on their security when obtaining Aadhaar details are identification proof.

<ul><li>A new survey finds that 80% of Indians don’t trust the <keyword id="144117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AADHAAR">Aadhaar</keyword> card program.</li><li>Respondents agree that the government needs to take <keyword id="187124" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Data-Protection">data protection</keyword> more seriously. </li><li>The government had previously signed an affidavit for the Supreme Court, stating that the Aadhaar database can neither be hacked nor breached.</li></ul>The Aadhaar card scheme, a 12-digit unique identity number for residents in India, has been embroiled in controversy since its initiation in 2009. Nine years down the line, citizens still don’t <a href="https://cio.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/digital-security/80-people-concerned-about-aadhaar-data-security-study/64383641">trust</a> the world’s <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/aadhaar-worlds-largest-id-database-exposed-by-india-government-errors/64175448">largest</a> biometric ID system. A survey conducted by Velocity MR, a market research and analysis company, concluded that eight out of 10 respondents were concerned about the security of their Aadhar data and felt the government should be more proactive about data protection. This comes from taking 5,800 respondents into consideration, across 8 tier-1 cities in India, including the National Capital Region. The Aadhaar conundrum Headlines that call the security of Aadhaar into the question rear their head every few months. Regardless of whether it’s a <a href="https://www.indiatimes.com/technology/news/an-online-researcher-hacked-into-aadhaar-s-official-android-app-to-show-how-poorly-it-s-secured-337425.html">French researcher</a> or <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/uidai-trashes-zdnet-report-refutes-aadhaar-data-leak-claim-by-delhi-researcher/articleshow/63446024.cms">ZDNet</a>, the issue lies with the government’s reiterations of the Aadhaar system being ‘<a href="https://www.troyhunt.com/is-indias-aadhaar-system-really-hack-proof-assessing-a-publicly-observable-security-posture/">hack-proof</a>’. The Unique Identification Authority of India (<keyword id="6355252" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="uidai">UIDAI</keyword>), the government agency behind Aadhaar cards has <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/aadhaar-data-is-fully-safe-uidai/articleshow/61725239.cms">said</a>, “The Aadhaar data, including biometric information, is fully safe and secure.” Even the government filed an <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/government-files-affidavit-in-aadhaar-case-claims-it-cannot-be-hacked-or-breached-supreme-court-to-hear-case-today-4190835.html">affidavit</a> with the Supreme Court in lieu of the Aadhaar case, that claimed that the data collected through the system cannot be breached or hacked. Security in itself is not a zero-sum game. Technology evolves at such velocity that safeguards becoming obsolete is always a concern, while also being inevitable. That being said, a system cannot be completely secure, it can only be sufficiently prepared. The Cambridge Analytica data breach scandal goes a long way in proving the same. It’s one of reasons why the conversation has veered from obtaining consent to getting ‘<a href="https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/consent/what-is-valid-consent/">valid’ </a>consent. The same survey, when asking about Facebook usage, found that 1-in-3 users are going to reduce the amount of information they share on the social networking platform, though they aren’t ready to leave it altogether. Because, let’s be honest, there’s always a weak link or a point of vulnerability. The question is, how long will it be before someone finds it.

However, in over enthusiasm, Dhoni’s personal details got shared on social media, leaving wife Sakshi enraged and demanding action from Union Law and Information and Technology Minister <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/indians-dont-steal-jobs-they-create-them-says-ravi-shankar-prasad-amid-h1b-visa-row/articleshow/57689276.cms">Ravi Shankar Prasad</a>. 
 
After Prasad promised prompt action, UIDAI director has blacklisted the agency for 10 years.

The security breach happened in the form of a tweet that the agency's Common Services Center did from its official handle. The tweet carried a photograph of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/heres-what-dhoni-gifted-virat-kohli-after-india-won-series-against-england/articleshow/56757764.cms">Dhoni</a> getting his biometric data registered, and another of his personal details on the Aadhaar website. The tweet with the details was later deleted.

Uncertainly over online train tickets seem to have hit a dead end. <keyword id="65866" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRCTC">IRCTC</keyword> has just announced that you can opt for Pay on Delivery for your <keyword id="56937" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tatkal">tatkal</keyword> train tickets just like your online shopping. IRCTC users will be able to pay for tickets via cash or a debit or credit card by opting to have tickets delivered at their doorstep. The service, which was available for general reservations up till now, will be a game changer for Tatkal bookings as it will allow users to book tickets with just two clicks. IRCTC has collaborated with <keyword id="255717" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anduril-Technologies">Anduril Technologies</keyword> Pvt Ltd for the doorstep delivery process. Anduril Technologies provides pay-on-delivery service to 4000+ pincodes across India. In case of refusal or cancellation before delivery, the customer will be liable to pay the cancellation and delivery charges., failing which may attract deactivation of user’s account and strict action as per law. IRCTC processes 130,000 Tatkal transactions daily, and a majority of these tickets are booked within minutes of Tatkal quota being opened for booking. Until now, users had to pay first via the standard online payment gateways before the IRCTC portal confirmed their ticket; a process that introduced a delay of several precious seconds and often led to users not able to book a confirmed ticket. The ‘pay on delivery’ feature completely circumvents the use of a payment gateway and will help users make the bookings in just a few seconds; greatly increasing their chance of booking a confirmed ticket under the Tatkal quota. So what’s the procedure to get tatkal tickets at doorstep? The customers need to first register with irctc.payondelivery.co.in in order to avail the ‘pay on delivery’ option. They need to tender either Adhaar or PAN details at the time of registration. While booking the ticket on IRCTC portal, the user then needs to choose the ‘pay-on-delivery’ option. The digital delivery happens instantly via SMS / Email. The collection happens within 24 Hrs of the booking The customer can also pay online through a payment link that will be sent to them at time of booking. Pay only for successful transactions The new IRCTC ‘pay on delivery’ feature eliminates the transaction failures, often the money gets debited and the ticket is not issued on account of multiple reasons. With the Pay-on-delivery option on IRCTC, users will pay only when the tickets are booked.

A government official who attended Gate’s little over half hour long meeting with the IT minister told Business Insider that Gates was very keen to participate in e-agriculture and e-payment platforms talking specifically about initiatives like patient digital health records and e-mandi. Gate was especially excited about developing apps for the two platforms, showing a lot more interest in e-payment platforms in India. He discussed developing apps around e-payment and talked about how more payment banks need to come up in India. Praising the government for being able to get a billion people on Adhaar, Gates also discussed how the government should look at connecting the soil health to the unique identity which can help developers to build apps that will help make a farmer’s life much easier. He ended by emphasizing his interest in investing in e-payment and e-agriculture start-ups.
