Adani has been charged over his role in an alleged years-long scheme to pay a $250 million bribe to Indian officials in exchange for favourable terms for solar power contracts. The stock of the group's flagship firm Adani Enterprises plunged 22.99%, Adani Ports dived 20%, Adani Energy Solutions tanked 20%, Adani Green Energy plummeted 19.53% and Adani Total Gas tumbled 18.14% on the BSE. Shares of Adani Power slumped 17.79%, Ambuja Cements cracked 17.59%, ACC fell 14.54%, NDTV dropped 14.37% and Adani Wilmar declined 10%. Some of the group firms also hit their lowest trading permissible limit or lower circuit for the day. The combined market capitalisation (mcap) of all the ten listed group firms eroded by ₹2,45,016.51 crore during the morning deals. In the equity market, the BSE benchmark Sensex traded 536.89 points lower at 77,041.49 and the NSE Nifty quoted 186.75 points down at 23,331.75. US prosecutors charged Adani, 62, his nephew Sagar and other defendants for paying over $250 million in bribes between 2020 and 2024 to Indian government officials to win solar energy contracts on terms that could potentially bring in more than $2 billion in profit. This, they alleged, was concealed from the US banks and investors from whom the Adani group raised billions of dollars for the project. The complaint charges them with violating the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws and seeks permanent injunctions, civil penalties, and officer and director bars. US law allows pursuing foreign corruption allegations if they involve certain links to American investors or markets. The Adani group did not immediately respond to requests for comments. "The defendants orchestrated an elaborate scheme to bribe Indian government officials to secure contracts worth billions of dollars," Breon Peace, US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, which brought the case, said in a statement. Adani, chairman of the ports-to-energy Adani Group, his nephew Sagar R Adani, who is an executive director at the conglomerate's renewable energy arm Adani Green Energy Ltd, and its former CEO Vneet Jaain were charged with securities fraud, securities fraud conspiracy and wire fraud conspiracy. The Department of Justice alleged that on several occasions, Adani personally met with an Indian government official to advance the bribery scheme, and the defendants held in-person meetings with each other to discuss aspects of its execution. Adani group stocks' combined market cap erodes by ₹2.45 lakh crore, Adani Enterprises tanks 23%

Mumbai: Indian stock markets rallied on Monday after the <keyword id="20032950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP-led-government" source="keywords">BJP-led government</keyword> secured a majority in the latest state elections in Maharashtra. The <keyword id="20641216" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nifty-50" source="keywords">Nifty 50</keyword> index gained more than 1.45 per cent or 346.30 points to open at 24,253.55 points, while the BSE <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> index surged 1,076 points or 1.36 percent to open at 80,193.47 points. Experts noted that the election results have an impact on the markets today, and if past trends are followed, the markets may witness some rally amid the return of the BJP in the Maharashtra state elections. <keyword id="20161891" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ajay-Bagga" source="keywords">Ajay Bagga</keyword> Banking and Market Expert stated that "The just concluded elections in Maharashtra, the results of which were declared on November 23rd, will have a positive immediate impact on the stock markets. In the Nifty 50 list, 49 stocks gained during the opening session, while only one stock declined. Shri Finance opened as the top gainer in the Nifty 50. Majority of Adani group stocks settle lower; Adani Power drops nearly 3%

Buch and her husband issued a statement calling Hindenburg's latest tirade as an attack on the credibility of SEBI and attempted "character assassination". In the equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex tanked 479.78 points to 79,226.13. The NSE Nifty dropped 155.4 points to 24,212.10. Buch and her husband Dhaval Buch in a joint statement on Sunday said the investments were made in 2015, well before her appointment as a whole-time member of SEBI in 2017 and the subsequent elevation as chairperson in March 2022, and in capacity as "private citizens living in Singapore". These funds became "dormant" on her appointment in SEBI. "SEBI was tasked with investigating investment funds relating to the Adani matter, which would include funds Ms Buch was personally invested in and funds by the same sponsor which were specifically highlighted in our original report. This is obviously a massive conflict of interest," Hindenburg said.

Hindenburg alleged that Buch and her husband had undisclosed investments in <keyword id="22746661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="obscure-offshore" source="keywords">obscure offshore</keyword> funds in Bermuda and Mauritius, the same entities allegedly used by <keyword id="20283220" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Adani" source="keywords">Vinod Adani</keyword> - the elder brother of group chairman Gautam Adani - to round-trip funds and inflate stock prices. SEBI in October 2020 began a probe into the shareholding structure of Adani Group companies after red flags were raised over high concentration of foreign holdings in the conglomerate's listed companies. Investigation was launched to determine if the foreign investors are genuine public shareholders or acting as fronts for the promoters. SEBI last year had told a Supreme Court-appointed panel that it was investigating 13 opaque offshore entities that held between 14 per cent and 20 per cent across five publicly traded stocks of the conglomerate. It hasn't stated if the two incomplete probes have since been completed, something which Hindenburg used to attack the market regulator. Madhabi and her husband Dhaval Buch in a joint statement strongly denied the "baseless allegations and insinuations made in the report". The same, they said, "are devoid of any truth". "Our life and finances are an open book," they said. "It is unfortunate that Hindenburg Research against whom SEBI has taken an enforcement action and issued a show cause notice has chosen to attempt character assassination in response to the same." While the statement did not talk on the questions Hindenburg raised over SEBI probe, the duo promised to come out with a detailed response. Hindenburg on Saturday stated that the Madhabi and her husband invested in offshore entities that were allegedly part of a fund structure managed by India Infoline and in which Vinod Adani also had investments. These investments reportedly date back to 2015, well before her appointment as a whole-time member of SEBI in 2017 and the subsequent elevation as chairperson in March 2022. It said Bermuda-based Global Opportunities Fund, which allegedly was used by entities connected to Adani Group to trade in shares of group companies, had sub-funds. Buch and her husband were investors in one of these sub-funds in 2015. Citing "whistleblower documents", Hindenburg said, "<keyword id="22743118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhabi-Buch" source="keywords">Madhabi Buch</keyword>, the current chairperson of SEBI, and her husband had stakes in both obscure offshore funds used in the Adani <keyword id="22743230" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="money-siphoning" source="keywords">money siphoning</keyword> scandal." SEBI, it claimed, has "shown a surprising lack of interest in Adani's alleged undisclosed web of Mauritius and offshore shell entities." The Buchs may have first opened their account with IPE Plus Fund 1 on June 5, 2015 in Singapore. IPE fund is a small offshore Mauritius fund set up by Vinod Adani through India Infoline (IIFL), a wealth management firm with ties to the Wirecard embezzlement scandal. "Vinod...used this structure to invest in Indian markets with funds allegedly siphoned from over invoicing of power equipment to Adani Group," claimed Hindenburg. Latching on to the Hindenburg allegations, Congress said the revelations only reinforced its demand for setting up a "joint parliamentary committee to investigate the full scope of the Adani mega scam" while the Trinamool Congress said the SEBI chairperson must resign. In January last year, Hindenburg accused Adani Group of pulling "the largest con in corporate history" by using a web of companies in tax havens to inflate its revenue and manipulate stock prices, even as debt piled up. After the Hindenburg report, the SC asked SEBI to complete its investigation and set up a separate expert panel to look into regulatory lapses. The panel did not give any adverse report on Adani and the apex court too stated that no other probe other than one being done by SEBI was required. On June 26 this year, SEBI in a show cause notice charged Hindenburg of "deliberately sensationalising and distorting certain facts" as well as working with a New York hedge fund to make its bet. Hindenburg had responded to that saying it made just USD 4.1 million from its declared positions on Adani stocks and criticised the regulator for not focusing its investigation into the January 2023 report "providing evidence" of the group creating "a vast network of offshore shell entities" and moving billions of dollars "surreptitiously" into and out of Adani public and private entities. Gautam Adani, who was the world's third-richest man before Hindenburg, in an epic comeback strategy raised USD 15 billion in equity and debt, sold some assets, repaid loans that was raised pledging shares, reined in expenses and refocused energies on core business. Adani is now ranked 12th richest in the world. The group has also made some acquisitions, buying cement company Sanghi Industries and the news agency IANS. Hindenburg on Saturday alleged that just weeks before Buch's appointment to SEBI, her husband requested the transfer of their investments into his sole control, potentially to avoid any scrutiny related to her new regulatory role. The couple's investments were reportedly funnelled through a complex, multi-layered offshore structure, raising questions about their legitimacy and purpose. On March 22, 2017, just weeks ahead of Buch's appointment as SEBI whole-time member, Dhaval wrote to Mauritius fund administrator Trident Trust. That communication was regarding his and his wife's investment in the Global Dynamic Opportunities Fund (GDOF), the US firm alleged. "In the letter, Dhaval requested to "be the sole person authorised to operate the Accounts", seemingly moving the assets out of his wife's name ahead of the politically sensitive appointment," Hindenburg alleged. Dhaval is a senior advisor at Blackstone and at Alvarez &amp; Marsal. He also serves as a non-executive director on the Board of Gildan.

After Adani, Hindenburg targets SEBI chief, she calls allegations baseless, character assassination

Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares notes that a range of 23,970-24,400 is a make or break for Nifty, and a breakout on either side will open the door for a further 300-400 points. The same observation was also seen in BankNifty with a range of 49,730-50,730. "Some stocks look strong on a technical front Balrampur Chini and United Spirits, HUL, and ITC. The media segment shows stock-specific buying (Network18 &amp; SunTV). The pharma sector has extended its strong uptrend and breakout in a few counters are indicating further rally in the sector (Alkem Labs, IPCA Labs, and Mankind Pharma)", he continued. All broad market indices dipped during early trade, about 1% each, with the exception of India VIX, which inched up about 5.57%. Only consumer durables and realty saw shoots of greens during opening trade today, while media dipped over 1%. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities, highlights that "benchmark indices experienced profit booking at higher levels last week. Nifty closed 1.42% down, while Sensex closed 1,260 points lower. The metal index declined by nearly 3%, while healthcare and pharma stocks held positive momentum despite weak market sentiment. The market slipped below the 20-day SMA (simple moving average) during the week but recovered some losses in the second half and eventually closed at 24,367/79,722. "For the week, 23,800/78,000 and 24,500/80,100 are expected to be the major support and resistance levels. Above 24,500/80,100, the market may continue the pullback formation until 24,700/80,600 or even 24,900/81,200. On the other hand, below 24,100/78,600, selling pressure may increase, potentially leading to a drop to the 50-day SMA and 23,800/78,000", he said. "The suggested strategy is to reduce long positions until the market crosses 24,500 levels. Considering trading bets above 24,500 is advisable as there may be a technical breakout that could push the market towards 24,900 levels. Below 23,800, it could fall to 23,300 levels", continued Chouhan.

A declaration of funds, signed by a principal at IIFL states that the source of the investment is "salary" and the couple's net worth is estimated at USD 10 million," the report stated. In January 2023, Hindenburg published a report accusing the Adani Group of <keyword id="20054376" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-irregularities" source="keywords">financial irregularities</keyword>, leading to a significant drop in the company's stock price. The group at the time had rubbished these claims. The Hindenburg report alleged <keyword id="20055139" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock-manipulation" source="keywords">stock manipulation</keyword> and fraud by the conglomerate. The case is related to the allegations (part of a report by Hindenburg Research) that Adani had inflated its share prices. After these allegations were published, there was a sharp fall in the shares of various Adani group companies stocks, reportedly to the tune of over USD 100 billion. The US short seller's 2023 January report was published two days before a USD 2.5 billion follow-up public offering was issued by Adani Enterprises. "Although volatility has significantly cooled-off after the sharp surge, there remains potential for further decline. On the index front, a decisive close above 24,500 in the Nifty is needed to ease pressure and trigger a sustained rebound. Given the current conditions, we maintain a cautious outlook and recommend continuing with a hedged approach", he continued. Says Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities, "Today, the benchmark indices bounced back sharply, the Nifty ends 305 points higher while the Sensex was up by 875 points. Among Sectors, all the major sectoral indices were traded in to the positive territory but Oil and Gas index outperformed, rallied 3.10 percent. Technically, after a positive opening the market held the positive momentum throughout the day. It also holding double bottom formation on intraday charts, which indicating continuation of pullback rally in the near future". "We are of the view that, 24,200/79,100 would be the sacrosanct support zone for the day traders. As long as market is trading above the same, the pullback formation is likely to continue. On the higher side, it could bounce back till 24,400-24,475/80,000-80,200. On the flip side, below 24,200/79,100 the sentiment could change, below same, it could retest the level of 24,100-24,000/78,800-78,500", he explained. However, this amount constitutes 0.067% of the total income and 0.22% of profit before tax for FY 23-24. <h2>Experts advise caution as Sensex hits 80,000</h2>According to Mr. Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares, "Indian bourses commenced the session on a strong note at a fresh high of 24,290 but due to lack of follow-through, the Index oscillated in a well-maintained range to end the session at 24,286.50 with gains of 162.65 points. Barring media, all other sectors ended the day in green with Bank Nifty being the top performer followed by metal and PSU Banks. Broader markets outperformed the frontline index as mid and smallcap gained by 0.79% &amp; 1.03% respectively". Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities noted that today, the benchmark indices registered a fresh all time high of 24,309/80,074. The Nifty ends 162 points higher while the Sensex was up by 545 points. Almost all the major sectoral indices were traded in to the positive territory but private bank index outperformed rallied over 2 percent. Technically, after a gap up opening market comfortably trading above 24,200/79,600 resistance level which is largely positive. "In addition, on intraday charts it is holding higher high and higher low formation, which supports further uptrend from the current levels. We are of the view that, as long as the index is trading above 24200/79600 the bullish structure is likely to continue". Arvinder Singh Nanda, Senior Vice President of Master Capital Services noted that BSE Sensex today touched the 80,000 mark for the first time, setting a new all-time high. "This milestone comes after the index added the last 10,000 points in under seven months, having first hit 70,000 on December 11, 2023". But while the long-term outlook remains positive, he advised caution at current levels.

Amidst the constituents of Nifty50, only 3 stocks advanced today, while 47 others saw declines. Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, highlights that almost all the sectors ended in the red, with PSU Banks and Realty being the major laggards. "The weak link of the markets, i.e., mid- and small-caps, tumbled by 2.61% and 3.92% and underperformed the frontline index. Considering the oversold conditions in the mid- and small-cap segments, a short-term bounce can be expected in the markets, which may push the index higher, but the upside seems to be capped at 24,670". Rajesh Bhosale, equity technical analyst at Angel One, cautions traders against taking long positions until there are clear signs of a bullish reversal. "The midcap space, in particular, saw a sharp decline, breaking below key support levels, signaling more pain ahead—bottom-fishing in this sector should be avoided for now," he added. Investor wealth worth Rs 8.98 lakh crore was wiped off the markets today, with the BSE m-cap dipping from Rs 453.65 lakh crore yesterday to Rs 444.66 crore today. Broader mid- and small-cap indices saw their worst losses since August, riding on the back of disappointing earnings and cautious management guidance for the upcoming quarters. As such, hefty profit-booking ensued to make the most of still elevated valuations. <h2>FIIs on a heavy selling spree</h2> The massacre in the markets comes amidst heavy offloading of stakes by FIIs (<keyword id="19932515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-institutional-investors" source="keywords">foreign institutional investors</keyword>). Data suggests so far this month, FIIs have offloaded a staggering Rs 82,479.73 crore in Indian markets. DIIs (<keyword id="20234284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-institutional-investors" source="keywords">domestic institutional investors</keyword>) have been trying to maintain some semblance and balance in the markets, having bought 77,402.11 crore worth of assets in the Indian markets. However, that has proved insufficient for maintaining the positive momentum of the markets. The last time Indian markets had witnessed such intense selling was in 2021–22, i.e., during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from NSDL suggests that during this period, FPIs had sold Rs 1,22,242 crore worth of assets in the Indian markets. Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, highlights that mid- and small-caps bore the brunt of earnings disappointments, as these are also the segments most stretched on many valuation metrics. "Growth slowdown concerns, along with uncertainty on rate cut timing, act as a double whammy for equity markets, especially after recent inflation data surprised sharply to the upside," he added. Looking ahead, the markets will continue to focus on the earnings announcements. Investors will look to the RBI's monetary policy meeting minutes tomorrow and the HSBC Manufacturing, Services, and Composite PMI data on Thursday for further signals to act upon.

During the day, Sensex had soared 740.89 points, or 0.94%, to touch 79,523.13 points. From the 30-share Sensex pack, JSW Steel surged nearly 5% while Tata Steel jumped nearly 4%. Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and UltraTech Cement were also among the big gainers. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Lupin, Britannia, and Infosys were among the major laggards on Sensex. On Nifty, where 39 stocks advanced during the day and the remaining 11 saw declines, Tata Steel, Hindalco, and JSW Steel were among the top gainers. Adani Ports, ITC, Bharti Airtel, and Asian Paints were among the leading laggards. In Asian markets, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory, while Seoul ended lower. Yesterday, the BSE benchmark tumbled 941.88 points, or 1.18%, to settle at 78,782.24, the lowest closing level since August 6. The Nifty had also tanked 309 points, or 1.27%, to close at 23,995.35. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) continued with their hefty exodus, offloading equities worth Rs 4,329.79 crore today, according to exchange data. So far in November, DIIs (domestic institutional investors) have put in Rs 2,558.75 crore in Indian markets. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.60% to $75.53 a barrel today. <h2>Banks, metals lead the party</h2> Aditya Gaggar, Director of Progressive Shares, explains that while bears dominated the first half of trading session by dragging the index lower; it was the banking counters that led to a sharp up move and pushed the index higher from its previous session's low. The Metal stocks also joined the party and pushed the index further higher to end the session at 24,213.30 with gains of 217.95 points. Mid and smallcaps also advanced but underperformed the frontline index", he added. Today's rally was largely led by banking scrips. The BSE Bankex jumped a staggering 1,218.58 points during the day. On NSE, both banks and financial services indices inched up by 1.94% and 1.98% respectively during the day. While PSU bank counters were up by 1.84%, private banks surged ahead with a 1.94% growth during the day. Metals were amidst the highest gainers, rising 2.84% during the day. All broad market indices closed the day in green, except for India VIX, which tumbled 4.08%.

In a post on X, Hindenburg cited "newly released Swiss criminal records reported by Swiss media outlet" to state that "Swiss authorities have frozen more than $310 million in funds across multiple Swiss bank accounts as part of a money laundering and securities forgery investigation into Adani, dating back as early as 2021." "Prosecutors detailed how an Adani frontman invested in opaque BVI/Mauritius &amp; Bermuda funds that almost exclusively owned Adani stocks," it said citing the report. Adani group rejected the allegations as baseless saying it had no involvement in any Swiss court proceedings. "We unequivocally reject and deny the baseless allegations presented. The Adani Group has no involvement in any Swiss court proceedings, nor have any of our company accounts been subject to sequestration by any authority," it said. It went on to state that "even in the alleged order, the Swiss court has neither mentioned our group companies, nor have we received any requests for clarification or information from any such authority or regulatory body. We reiterate that our overseas holding structure is transparent, fully disclosed, and compliant with all relevant laws." The allegations, it said, "are clearly preposterous, irrational, and absurd. We have no hesitation in stating that this is yet another orchestrated and egregious attempt by the same cohorts acting in unison to inflict irreversible damage on our group's reputation and market value." "The Adani Group remains steadfastly committed to transparency and compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements," it said, adding it "strongly condemns" the allegations. The Swiss media outlet Gotham City in its report stated that "A ruling by the Federal Criminal Court (FCC) reveals that the Geneva Public Prosecutor's Office was investigating alleged wrongdoing by the Indian conglomerate Adani well before activist investors from Hindenburg Research made the first accusations." "More than USD 310 million belonging to an alleged front man for billionaire <keyword id="19929098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Adani" source="keywords">Gautam Adani</keyword> is sequestered in five Swiss banks," it said adding the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) took over the investigation after the case was revealed in the media.
