<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"><img src="http://static3.businessinsider.com/image/50f45eb969bedd046a000018-590-443/yammer-20130114-03.jpg?maxX=400&amp;maxY=300" border="0" alt="Yammer 1355 Market" width="400" height="300" /></div><p class="source">Owen Thomas, Business Insider</p></div>On Monday, <keyword id="726756" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Yammer">Yammer</keyword>, the enterprise-collaboration startup <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> bought for $1.2 billion last year, moved from its longtime home in San Francisco's SoMa district to a new headquarters in <keyword id="1779811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="1355-Market">1355 Market</keyword>, the building that's also home to Twitter and One Kings Lane.</p>
<p>Business Insider was on hand for the ribbon-cutting. We spoke to Yammer CEO <keyword id="980149" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="David-Sacks">David Sacks</keyword>, CTO <keyword id="1779809" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Adam-Pisoni">Adam Pisoni</keyword>, and a host of employees about the move.</p>
<p>Microsoft's <keyword id="1779810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Danl-Lewin">Dan'l Lewin</keyword>, its top executive in Silicon Valley, was also on hand—the only sign of a very low-key presence for Yammer's new owners.</p>
<p>Lewin told us that the hands-off approach was very intentional, the result of a lot of learning on Microsoft's part on how to integrate startups. He called Yammer a "golden egg" that Microsoft wanted to handle carefully.</p>
<p>It's incubating in a beautiful new nest.</p>

Yammer, Microsoft's 'Golden Egg,' Has Moved Into A Gorgeous New Headquarters

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/54e6cb336bb3f73f7901829b-940-705/adam-pisoni-head-shot.jpg?maxX=600" border="0" alt="Adam Pisoni Head Shot" width="600"><p class="source"><span>Adam Pisoni</span></p></img></div><p></p></div>Adam Pisoni co-founded collaboration software company Yammer with David Sacks, the former PayPal exec and Hollywood screenwriter. </p><p>When Microsoft bought Yammer in July 2012 for more than $1 billion, Sacks disappeared from public sight, and he left the company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/david-sacks-leaving-microsoft-2014-7">after just two years.</a></p><p>But Pisoni kept carrying the Yammer torch, both inside and outside Microsoft. In particular, he was a <a href="http://www.citeworld.com/article/2114910/development/yammer-cto-adam-pisoni-what-microsoft-can-learn.html">huge influence within Microsoft</a> as it tried to become a more modern cloud company.</p><p>For years, Microsoft developed software in huge three-year shifts, then tried to sell those massive updates to customers all at once. The new Microsoft is aiming to sell subscriptions to cloud services, with smaller updates trickling out all the time. It's not a new technique -- Salesforce and other cloud companies have been doing it for years - but Pisoni was one of its main proponents at Microsoft.</p><p>Now he's moved on as well.</p><p>Pisoni left Microsoft as well to start his next project, <a href="http://www.responsive.org/">Responsive.org.</a> It has a much bigger mission: Instead of just changing how software is written, Pisoni and his partners want to change how businesses are run.</p><p>And it all revolves around something called "halocracy."</p><p>"It's a non-hierarchical way of running a company, or describing how a company runs," Pisoni told Business Insider. </p><p>Most companies are run like military outfits. Everybody has an official rank, and their influence extends one level below. The exception is senior leadership, who gets to assign resources and titles to the rest of the company. The only way you get new influence is by getting promoted, or waiting for the company to reorganize.</p><p>But a lot of companies are finding that this old way of doing things is no longer working. Information moves much more quickly between people and organizations, and that means change is happening at a dizzying pace. The old command-and-control structure can't keep up with the pace of change, and a lot of companies are experimenting with new ways of organizing their people. </p><p><span>In a halocracy, people are organized into small groups called circles. Each circle has a broad purpose and specific goals, but the people in the circle define their own roles, and those roles and the circles themselves can change at any time.</span></p><p><span>As Pisoni explains, when he ran engineering at Yammer, he had 200 people under him. "But that also meant a lot of baggage because of my rank. I was also doing HR, facilities. I don't know that I'm the best at all those things, but it rolls up to me." In a halocratic organization, the people who are best at those jobs would take them, and be accountable for the results.</span></p><p>Pisoni says that halocracy isn't the end point, but rather a stopping point on the way to a more flexible organization.</p><p>Tech companies like Zappos and Google and Facebook are already working this way, but as he started floating the idea for Responsive.org in 2013, and <a href="http://www.responsive.org/manifesto">posted a manifesto</a> describing the organization's goals, he heard from dozens of companies who were all struggling with the same idea.<span><br /></span></p><p>"In the last year or two, it's gone from a little experiment to the C level saying 'we want to know if it scales,'" said Pisoni. General Electric, NAB Bank, and Telstra are among the companies that Pisoni says are starting to think differently. </p><p>Responsive.org, which officially launches today, is meant to give the people in these companies who want to change a place to learn from each other and share ideas - think meetups, shared resources, and that kind of thing. It sounds a little loose and vague, but it's similar to how the "agile" programming movement started in 2000 and has now become the standard way of programming at most tech companies. Responsive.org wants to do the same thing, but for business organization instead of mere software development.</p><p>Pisoni is joined by co-founder Aaron Dignan, the CEO of management consultancy <a href="http://www.undercurrent.com/">Undercurrent</a>, and Zappos and Microsoft have both signed on as participants.</p><p>Speaking of Microsoft, Pisoni says that CEO Satya Nadella really does get the need for change, but he can't do it by himself.</p><p>"I'm a huge Satya fan, he really gets it. But the lesson to be learned is even when teh CEO gets it, there's a lot more work to be done to transform the organization. They're doing a lot of the right things. Some will work out, some won't. Yammer's cofounder has quit Microsoft to start a new business movement

<p>It's been two years since Microsoft acquired business social network site Yammer for $1.2 billion and the cofounder of the company, David Sachs, <a href="https://twitter.com/DavidSacks/statuses/492383928745861120">announced on Twitter</a> on Thursday that he's leaving Microsoft.</p>

<p>Yammer had been running as a fairly independent unit, even as its tech was integrated into various Microsoft products like SharePoint and Office 365 (the cloud version of Microsoft Office).</p>
<p>But now Microsoft is moving Yammer into the Office 365 and Outlook development teams, which are headed by Microsoft Corporate Vice President Rajesh Jha, <a href="http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-moves-yammer-under-office-365-co-founder-david-sacks-is-out-7000031984/">reports Mary Jo Foley.</a></p>
<p>Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been warning that he is reorganizing the company to streamline it. So it's perhaps not surprising that Yammer is being folded into a bigger team and Sacks would leave.</p>

Yammer was supposed to teach Microsoft about <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/live-microsoft-yammer-conference-call-2012-6"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"viral adoption."</span></a> Ballmer even coined a term "Yammerization," which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-hasnt-adopted-yammers-model-2013-6">Microsoft told us,</a> "is about designing software for viral, voluntary adoption, but with enterprise-grade controls and reliability."</p>
<p>But a year after the acquisition, Microsoft changed its tune. Instead of creating more software for viral adoption, it viewed Yammer as "a freemium on-ramp to other Microsoft services," Yammer's other cofounder Adam Pisoni told us. </p>
<p>As for Sack's departure, Pisoni <a href="https://twitter.com/yammeradam/status/492401207567065088">tweeted</a>, "We were an unlikely pair, but that's also probably what made us special. Thanks again @DavidSacks for the wild ride."</p>
<p>Before Yammer, Sacks was PayPal's chief operating officer.</p>
<p>Microsoft sent Foley the following comment about Sack's departure:</p>

<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Typically, restaurants deal with tens, if not hundreds, of different suppliers. For example, they would have four different meat suppliers, another three different vegetable suppliers, a couple bakeries, a separate beverage supplier, and even a dish-washing supplier.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This makes it extremely difficult for restaurant owners to keep track of everything they order, because each supplier has different payment terms, dates, and catalogues. On top of that, the food industry is still largely run offline, where payments are done by checks and paper invoices. </span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Y Combinator grad <a href="http://sourcery.us/">Sourcery,</a> which came out of stealth mode Friday, is a startup that's trying to end this decades-long problem. It provides a platform where food suppliers and buyers can manage their entire transactions online. From electronic invoicing and payments to product viewing and order placements, Sourcery takes care of a big part of restaurant operations that usually takes huge amounts of time for owners.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"By essentially taking over this part of the operation, we're enabling our customers to really focus on what they really love to do: cooking food," Sourcery's CEO Na'ama Moran told Business Insider. "Restaurant owners are really passionate about food, but they really don't like to manage cash flows."</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Sourcery also makes it easier for buyers to find suppliers across the country. Because of its fast-growing user base, it's creating a social-network-like platform for wholesale food suppliers and buyers. With just a single click, restaurant owners can connect with local farmers and place orders whenever they want.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Because of this, Sourcery has already built a quite impressive list of users. Some of the leading tech companies with their own kitchens, like Palantir, Dropbox, and Airbnb, are all Sourcery users. Popular restaurants like La Mar, 'witchcraft, and Hops &amp; Hominy are also on it. Munchery, a SF-based food delivery startup that makes thousands of meals a day, also relies on it.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Moran didn't share actual sales figures or the number of clients it has, but did note that its sales has been doubling month-over-month. That translates to over millions of dollars in monthly transaction volume, she said. That's a good start when you consider the entire wholesale foodservice industry is worth $220 billion.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In fact, some of the biggest venture capitalists are already taking note of Sourcery's huge growth potential. Palantir's cofounder Joe Lonsdale, Yammer CTO Adam Pisoni, and ex-Oracle CFO Jeff Epstein are all part of an investor group that committed $2.5 million in seed funding.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Sourcery is solving a real business problem in a highly focused and underserved vertical with massive potential for network effects," Lonsdale said in a statement.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Electronic invoicing may not be anything new, especially when you consider the big players in the market, such as Tradeshift and Taulia. But Sourcery claims to differ from the rest because of its highly customized technology specifically designed for food vendors. And it already has a much bigger community of food vendors, which matters the most when you're building a niche marketplace platform focused on a single industry.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"We're doing something that no one else has done in this industry," Moran said. "We want to create a better food system and we believe our technology can make people's lives easier."</span></p>
