Australian wicketkeeping great Adam Gilchrist paid tribute to former India captain MS Dhoni after the latter called time on his illustrious international career. Dhoni in an Instagram post on Saturday announced retirement from international cricket. "Always a pleasure to play against you @mahi7781 You did it with style, flamboyance and above all else, calmness. Your own way. The Dhoni way. Congrats on all you achieved," said Gilchrist in his own Instagram post with a pic of the pair in the Indian Premier League. Gilchrist can be seen wearing the jersey of the Deccan Chargers while Dhoni is in the yellow of Chennai Super Kings. Here's what Adam Gilchrist had to say after MS Dhoni retired

Cricket has seen many greats come and go, but very few would argue that anyone came close to <keyword id="6354267" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sachin-Tendulkar">Sachin Tendulkar</keyword>. The Indian batting maestro has been voted the 'Best <keyword id="17665" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Test-Player">Test player</keyword>' of the 21st century in an online poll conducted by <keyword id="44302" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cricket-Australia">Cricket Australia</keyword>'s website. 

	The former India skipper got the highest number of votes to emerge on top of the list of the 100 best Test players since 2000, in a poll conducted by cricket.com.au, reported PTI.
 Moreover, <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword>'s Kumar Sangakkara got the second highest votes, followed by <keyword id="14583" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Adam-Gilchrist">Adam Gilchrist</keyword> of Australia, who was ranked third. Currently the 'Icon' of <keyword id="6354831" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League">Indian Premier League</keyword> (IPL) franchise <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword>, Tendulkar earned 23% of votes, with over 16,000 fans participating in the survey. Sangakkara got 14% after Cricket Australia released the top-100 Test players' list since 2000 on its website. 

	The Indian legendary batsman, who retired from international cricket in 2013 after playing his 200th Test, is the lone Indian player to be figuring in the top-10 list, while there are four Australian, three South African and two Sri Lankan cricketers.
 

	"After 10 days of counting down and no end of deliberations, cricket.com.au released its final countdown of the 100 best Test players since 2000 a couple of days ago. Readers debated the top 10, just as you did players 11 through 100, but we also provided an opportunity for you to decide your No.1 Test player of the century," CA's website stated.
 "Tendulkar, the Little Master who remains an iconic figure in the sport, was a runaway winner, jumping four places from where cricket.com.au had him placed, while batting giants <keyword id="6367229" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ricky-Ponting">Ricky Ponting</keyword> and <keyword id="61954" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jacques-Kallis">Jacques Kallis</keyword> were separated on countback, with the Australian just edging out his Proteas counterpart," it said. 

	The 42-year-old Tendulkar, who is the only batsman to have hit 100 international centuries, holds the record for highest run scorer in both Tests and One-Day Internationals.

Another feather in Sachin’s cap! Voted best Test player of 21st century

Australian spin legend <keyword id="17439" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shane-Warne">Shane Warne</keyword> wants England to make a strong statement against <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> in the two-Test series starting at Lord's on Thursday. Warne hoped that England <keyword id="16561" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="skipper">skipper</keyword> <keyword id="9234" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Alastair-Cook">Alastair Cook</keyword> would lead from the front and be proactive as a leader. 
 
"The Ashes whitewash is over, big-name players have moved on and this week I am excited to see the new brand of cricket Alastair Cook wants to play. I hope Cook has realised he has to own his own team, and that this is not Peter Moores' team. His job is to get everyone ready to play for Cook and England. This is Cook's team and I hope he demanded from the selectors they picked players with the traits to produce the brand of cricket he wants to play under his leadership. England's style of play will be a reflection of Cook's mindset and outlook," Warne wrote in his latest column for The Telegraph on Wednesday. 
 The former Test star stressed that in order to forget the 5-0 Ashes thrashing at the hands of <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword>, Cook must lead England aggressively and show intent that they want to get back to number one position in the rankings. 
 
"Cook should have been smashing his fist on the table and saying this is the way we are going to play. After a 5-0 hammering you want England to come out this week and be really aggressive, send a message to Sri Lanka and the world that his team are ready to regain the No 1 spot. If Cook wants to stay boring and be the same old England by bowling wide of off stump and trying to build up pressure slowly then he has chosen the wrong path. It was proved in Australia that it is an approach which does not work and it will be fascinating to see if they have learnt from losing the Ashes 5-0. Test cricket has evolved rapidly and Cook must sense the moment," he said. 
 
However, Warne was not impressed by the inclusion of wicketkeeper Matt Prior in place of in-form Jos Buttler and he hints that coach Peter Moores may have had a role behind the move. 
 
"I find it really surprising they have gone back to Matt Prior. When you are restructuring the team why pick Prior and not Jos Buttler? He has just shown how dangerous he is with the bat with a brilliant one-day hundred so stick with him while he is on a roll. Going back to Prior I really believe is a backward step. This is the time for new beginnings. If you are going to rebuild the team then the keeper is vital because he sets the tone and standards in the field. England dropped him for a reason. He was not doing the job properly. He has only kept in one first-class match before this Test, I hope this is not a teacher's, or should I say coach's pet selection. I think that it is a Moores call, the old Sussex connection with Prior. I think it is, as I said, a teacher's pet selection and Buttler has been hard done by. 
 The 44-year-old gave the example of <keyword id="14583" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Adam-Gilchrist">Adam Gilchrist</keyword> to explain how a player becomes better with experience at the top level and why Buttler must be given a go in Test cricket. 
 
"Buttler gives that extra dimension with his batting. Prior might be slightly better behind the stumps but it is not as if England have picked two front-line spinners and the keeper will have to stand up all day. Instead, they have picked a part-time off-spinner. I played for Australia when Adam Gilchrist first came in to the side. He was not a complete keeper then, but he improved and everyone wanted a Gilchrist in their team, and why wouldn't you, because of his brilliant batting at seven. He worked his butt off to be the best keeper possible, and it came with experience. 
 
"Gilly revolutionised the batsman/keeper role and now every team wants that kind of player. Well, Buttler could be your man so give him a go. It should be a case that Buttler needs to mess up in order to lose his England place, not the other way round. Buttler should not be going back to county cricket. Moores has to win respect in his new job. Telling Prior to earn his stripes back would have been a perfect way of doing it," he said. 
 Regarding England's spin resources, Warne felt that the untimely retirement of <keyword id="62118" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Graeme-Swann">Graeme Swann</keyword> has left a big hole in their bowling attack. 
 "England have rebuilding work to do and it will naturally take time to replace the wonderful Graeme Swann. He jumped from a sinking ship in Australia and should have finished that series off but we should still respect him for what he achieved. The fact England have picked a part-timer in <keyword id="1811046" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Moeen-Ali">Moeen Ali</keyword> shows the hole Swann has left behind. If you are a young spinner in England it is time to put your hand up because there is a spot waiting for you," he wrote. 
 
He believes that the inclusion of Moeen in the Test squad augers well for other bits-and-pieces English cricketers who can now hope to have a future in the Test side. "I will be here for the next 10 weeks and I will be keeping a close eye on the spinners in county cricket to see who is out there. Even batters who bowl a bit of spin, such as Moeen, have got a chance too. 
 
"Moeen has, by sheer weight of county runs for Worcestershire and bowling a few overs of spin, earned a Test cap without being a front-line spinner so all those bits-and-pieces cricketers should get down to the nets and start bowling for hours every day because they could get a Test cap for England. All county front-line spinners should not take the selection of Moeen to heart either. They just have to show the selectors what they have got and demand selection by pure performance," he said. 
 
The highest wicket-taker in Ashes history with 195 scalps, Warne has urged England to pick up 'match winners with character'. "England have to find someone who does a good job for what they need, which either means being accurate or someone who rips it big, can take five wickets and win a game but might get smashed. This is where Cook needs to decide on the traits he wants and hopefully he goes for match winners with character," he said.

And who knows, the released names could get brought using right-to-match card or find a new home at a higher price. <h2>Another setback for Ishan Kishan?</h2> Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) placed their trust in Indian core, consisting of skipper Hardik Pandya, former captain Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah, 360-degree hitter Suryakumar Yadav and young left-hander Tilak Varma. It was expected that Ishan could retain his place, given his youth and experience with the franchise. Aged just 26, he had spent seven seasons with the franchise and did reasonably well. However, after being brought for Rs 15.25 crores ahead of 2022 season, the price tag seemed to have caught up with Kishan. In next 44 matches for the franchise till the 2024-season-end, Kishan scored 1,192 runs in 43 innings at an average of 28.98, with just seven fifties. While these numbers are not bad, it could be debatable that he did not deliver as per expectations, with 19 scores being below 20. In the 2024 season, he could score just 320 runs at an average of just over 22, with just a fifty to his name. After being excluded from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) central contract this year after not participating for red-ball cricket, this is another big setback for Kishan, who has not been considered for international cricket despite participating and doing well in red-ball tournaments like Buchi Babu Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy recently. <h2>DC era 2.0 on cards?</h2> With wicketkeeper-batter and biggest superstar of the franchise, Pant released from the franchise and looking for a new franchise as per several media reports, Delhi Capitals could be moving to their 2.0 era, placing trust in young, under-the radar names like Axar Patel (235 runs with two fifties and 11 wickets in 2024), Tristan Stubbs (378 runs with three fifties and three wickets), Abhishek Porel (327 runs with two fifties) and Kuldeep Yadav (16 wickets at an average of 23.25) after good performances last year. Franchise has also released big time stars like David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Anrich Nortje, Prithvi Shaw. Could this be the start of a new era for DC? Only time will tell. <h2>Shreyas Iyer joins unfortunate list of captains</h2>The IPL winning captain Shreyas Iyer has been let go after winning the title for his franchise KKR this year, their first in a decade and overall third. While many argue his batting stats of 351 runs in 14 innings with two fifties at a strike rate of 146.86 could be a reason behind his release, the other half of the story is that the in-form KKR top-order did not leave the middle-order with much to do. His recurring fitness issues, which caused him to miss 2023 season, also could be a reason. Irrespective of what the reason could be, one thing is for sure, Iyer is up there with likes of Adam Gilchrist (released by Deccan Chargers in 2011 after title win in 2009, semifinal finish in 2010), David Warner (released by Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of 2022 season despite 2016 title win and multiple playoff finishes) as one of the most unluckiest captains in IPL. <h2>Strong faith in Indian uncapped/inexperienced stars</h2>The franchises have been extremely bold this time around, opting to release experienced, household Indian/overseas names and placing their trust in several Indian uncapped/inexperienced players. Out of a total of 46 players retained across all franchises, 36 players are Indian. Out of these, 10 players are uncapped Indians stars. These players are Abhishek Porel, Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, Ramandeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Mohsin Khan, Ayush Badoni, Shashank Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, Yash Dayal. Also, out of other 24 capped Indians, 13 players have played less than 30 international matches and eight have played 10 or less international games for India. Of these 24 uncapped players, no one has all format experience for India and only two have Test cricket experience, Dhruv Jurel and <keyword id="20022019" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajat-patidar" source="keywords">Rajat Patidar</keyword>. Notably, it is Jurel, who has just played international matches for India, who has received the biggest pay hike, going from Rs 20 lakh this season to Rs 14 crores next season. <h2>End of 'KGF' era for Royal Challengers Bengaluru?</h2> With stars like Faf and Maxwell released, it could spell the end of 'Kohli, Glenn, Faf' (KGF) era for <keyword id="20282652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rcb" source="keywords">RCB</keyword>, which lasted from 2022-24. During this phase, they all scored heavily for RCB. Despite a lull in 2022 season, Virat scored 1,721 runs in 45 matches and innings at an average of 44.12, with three centuries and 13 fifties. Skipper Faf also scored 1,636 runs in 45 innings at an average of 38.05, with a strike rate of 146.99 and 15 fifties to his name. Maxwell sits at the third spot with 1,266 runs at an average of 28.77 and a strike rate of over 159, with 12 half-centuries in 50 innings. The only player that came closer to the trio was Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who made 796 runs in 44 matches and 42 innings at an average of 29.48, with three fifties. If RCB had Virat-AB de Villiers-Chris Gayle in 2010s, KGF dominated the RCB batting numbers in 2020s. When RCB starts rebuilding their side from scratch in the auction, they would have a huge task in hand of finding one or two highly popular, capable and consistent foreign stars to help Virat unleash the carnage in a "Play Bold" avatar. Also, with the Rajat Patidar being retained for 11 crores, RCB might have made it clear that he could be the next big Indian batter the franchise invests in. His exceptional spin abilities have made a lot of difference for the side. Ever since he was brought by the franchise in 2021 for Rs 20 lakh, Patidar has played 27 matches, scoring 799 runs at an average of 34.73 with a strike rate of 158.84 and having registered a century and seven fifties. Melbourne, Jun 12 () Former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist and current opener David Warner have expressed gratitude to two Indian students for helping people in the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gilchrist thanked Sharon Varghese, an Indian student who did her Bachelors in Nursing from the University of Wollongong. Varghese has been was working on the frontline along with other health care workers to look after the residents of aged-care during the global health crisis. "She gave up her time to work as an aged-care worker throughout that time. Sharon, I want to say congratulations on the selfless act and for wanting to thank people in Australia because you have enjoyed three and a half years living here. And that's wonderful to hear," Gilchrist said in a video message. "Just want to let you know, all of Australia, all of India and more importantly, your family will be so very proud of your efforts." In another short video, Warner thanked Queensland-based Indian student, Shreyas Sheth. "Namaste. I am here to say thank you to Shreyas Sheth who is doing selfless work to help others during the COVID crisis. Shreyas is doing his Masters in Computer Science at the University of Queensland and he has been part of University's outreach program, preparing and delivering food packets to students in need right now," Warner said in the video. "So I just want to say 'good on ya'. I am sure your mum and dad and India are proud of you. Keep up the great work." Several of these players have already stretched their careers in Twenty20 after retiring from international cricket. 
 
The initial plan is to hire 28 players to play 15 matches for the next three and a half years. The first few matches would be played in three US cities this September. 
 
Similar formats with legendary figures have worked well in tennis and golf, thanks to the obvious fan following and nostalgia, but nothing of the sort has ever been tried in cricket. Whether this will work out, only time would tell.
