Do you know what you want to do? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re seeing where life takes you. Maybe you don’t want to do ‘this’, but you don’t know what you wanna do! Maybe, you just ‘wanna be!’ That’s wannabe.

Did you have that conversation with parents where you say you don’t want to do the ‘traditional courses/jobs’, and they think you’re ‘artsy’, and try to lure you with money, success and US Visa? Welcome to the Club. 
 
Don’t get me wrong. These are all noble professions, but if you’re not going in with intention, you’re doing injustice to someone who has that fire in ‘em. 
 
So now you’re just ’being’. Don’t ‘be’! You don’t have time to ‘be’. 
 
Let me tell you how to not just ‘be’! 
 
Taking time out to figure what you want to do if fine, but the problem with figuring out in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Abish+Mathew">Abish</a>’s words is that it’s ‘freakin additive’! 
 
You’re just being, not doing anything. That’s the problem. 
 
Most of our parents’ lives are governed by two things - ‘log kya kahenge’ (What would others say?) and ‘tujhse shaadi kaun karega?’(Who’ll marry you?) 
 
You’ve got to accept that you’re always going to be a kid to ‘em. They want to see you succeed where they failed. They’ll always try to safeguard your ideas. 
 
You’ve got to ensure just two things – that you’re earning enough, and that you’re occasionally praised by your peers. The praise takes care of ‘log kya kahenge’ and the money takes care of ‘tujhse shaadi kaun karega!’. Just kidding about the last part. Feminists, don’t ground me. 
 
The hard fact is that you’ve to accept that maybe your parents would accept, but never really be satisfied with what you do. 
 
So why’s it important for you to do what you got to do? 
 
It’ll eat you up. Once you find what you should do, you’d live in regret till you’re here… 
 
Sure, your stress levels are going to go up, and you’re supposed to fail, even if you do what you love. That’s how we all learn. 
 
It’s when you finally succeed and your parents see you’ve arrived that they’ll say, “Fine, love that. I’ll let you be.” 
 
There’s a long way till you can ‘be’, and that’s only where you belong.

Comedian Abish Mathew’s Guide to ‘Doing’ Careers,
and not just ‘Being’

The task at hand was nearly impossible. Our target, <keyword id="1356429" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanan-Gill">Kanan Gill</keyword>, one half of the duo behind Pretentious Movie Reviews stood enveloped amidst a herd of his loyal fans who descended almost instantly to take tokens of remembrance in the forms of selfies, autographs and advice from the guy who made them see movies in a completely different way. 
 
Fortunately for us, we somehow managed to break into the fortress and find our way in- close enough to have a chat with the 27-year-old comedian who has revolutionised the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=youtube">Youtube</a> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=comedy">comedy </a>space along with his partner in crime <keyword id="2024207" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biswa-Kalyan-Rath">Biswa Kalyan Rath</keyword> and has moved on to improve <keyword id="6359193" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Comedy">comedy</keyword> with the Improvisers ( a comedy collective comprising <keyword id="2482927" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kaneez-Surka">Kaneez Surka</keyword>, Kenny Sebastian, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=abish+mathew">Abish Mathew</a> and him) 
 
Naturally, the first question we pose in front of Gill is the most clichéd one. “Can we expect more of the Pretentious Movie Reviews anytime soon?,” we ask, our faces making no effort to hide the excitement. 
 
“Maybe. Life is long,” he quips. 
 
“Maybe?” we ask almost disappointed. 
 
“Yes, maybe. Maybe we’ll die before that or maybe a meteor will hit us tomorrow.” 
 
When we ask him whether he has been rehearsing his answers, he answers in the negative. “No, no. I’m just very zen in life. What’s the point of hurrying with everything?” 
 
That’s Kanan Gill in a nutshell. He doesn’t worry himself to death and yet he does. He doesn’t mince his words and can be found at his candid best whether on stage or off it and the best part? He never really stops trying to make you laugh. 
 
He had our curiosity. But, after the next answer, he got our attention. 
 
 
 
“When you shoot a video, there are no people, so you basically got to perform to the camera. It’s a very difficult thing to do. And, that’s where most people who start with videos go wrong- like they look very bored and have low energy because there is no else in the room, right? So that’s what both Biswa and I learnt while making our videos- that we have to pretend that the audience is your camera,” he explains, when we ask him what is more difficult- performing live or shooting videos. 
 
“Performing live is much easier- mainly because your audience is right there. There’s no pressure to pretend. Your energy, expressions and mannerisms come almost naturally,” he says. 
 
As an afterthought, he adds that when it comes to dealing with hate, online is a much trickier platform. 
 
“I usually ignore it. For one video, I just turned off the comments because they were like really bad. There are times it really gets to you, so I think it’s best to just avoid them,” advises Kanan. 
 
We try getting the conversation back to how he shot to fame- Pretentious Movie Reviews and ask him which movie has been his favourite to review? 
 
 
 
 
“Gunda was fun if you keep in mind the whole process of actually reviewing it. But, I was the most happy when we reviewed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ddlj">Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge</a>.” 
 
And, is there movie he is looking forward to reviewing? 
 “My parents live in Singapore and my sister lives in London, and this December all of them came down to Bangalore and we met. Naturally, I was like ‘Guys let’s watch a movie as a family’ and I took them to watch <keyword id="1665132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dilwale">Dilwale</keyword> and you can imagine- it ruined our entire vacation. So, I guess I’d start with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=dilwale">Dilwale</a>,” he tells us while laughing. 
 
Explaining why they suddenly stopped reviewing movies, Kanan says, “We shot a couple of reviews but didn’t end up releasing them because we thought they weren’t that funny. Which is why, we took a hiatus because we thought that we had exhausted all our angles.” 
 
Considering he has recently started doing improve comedy, we wonder if there are some parameters he follows to ensure his jokes don’t cross the line of being offensive and quick comes his reply, “This is a thing I’ve worried about more and more over time. When I was just starting out, I used to just go and say anything like horrible, deliberately offensive things just to shock the audience and get a response out of them. But now, when you realise more people are coming to see you, you have to worry about every word you’re about to say.” 
 
 
 
He further adds that he still slips up sometimes and says one or two things he shouldn’t and then instantly regrets them and wonders whether he is going to get into trouble for that. “You never know especially with people filming everything all the time and getting offended at the drop of a hat,” he says. 
 
So, censorship does affect his content then? “Very much” he answers. “I have a video that I shot in January and I absolutely love it. I’ve shown to it all the other comedians and they’ve told me that it’s the funniest shit ever but you know what? I can never put it out because if I did, I’d be butchered. I’m upset about that video every day,” Kanan tells us. 
 
To put things in perspective, he talks of his favourite show South Park. 
 
“The creators of South Park talked about political correctness as a wave. They said that it was big in the 90s and then it went away. But, when they did the latest season, they also talked about how political correctness is becoming a big thing again. So I’m hoping censorship is one of those things that just goes away with time or at least reaches a breaking point.” 
 
Realising our time is almost up, we ask him one last question- Any tips for people who’re just starting out? 
 
He replies matter-of-factly, “You know when you’re sitting around with your friends and trying to make them laugh? Take that experience of being the funny guy in your group on to a much bigger platform- the stage,” he signs off.

Pretentious Movie Reviews will be back sooner than
you think, says comedian Kanan Gill

Mumbai, Jul 15 () Stand-up comedians Aadar Malik, Sahil Shah and Azeem Banatwalla are the latest names to apologise for their years old and "out-of-context" videos and social media posts that have resurfaced online. The comedians said they were sorry if they had offended or hurt anyone's religious sentiments and also requested that their families be spared of online vitriol. The development came days after several comics such as Vir Das, Rohan Joshi and Kaneez Surka alleged that their personal contact information and addresses were leaked online, which led to vicious trolling. Earlier this week, Twitter users dug out screenshots of jokes of some comics, including Varun Grover, Aditi Mittal, Abish Mathew, which they had cracked in the past. These users claim that comedians used Hindu gods in their joke punchlines and started trending #HinduphobicComedyIndustry. On Tuesday, private contact details of these comics were shared from an anonymous Twitter account. The account was later suspended. Joshi claimed that his family was being targeted with hate messages and announced a hiatus from social media. On Tuesday, Malik took to Twitter to apologise for hurting religious sentiments. "Some clips of my videos are being shared on social media. I'm really sorry if I've hurt anyone's religious sentiments or if anyone has got offended by these videos. These are eight-year-old videos, and they have been taken out of context and time," he said in the video. The comic also claimed that he is getting a lot of hate messages and threats to his family on social media, and requested trolls to take a step back. "It becomes a very scary atmosphere to live in. As comedians, we just want to make people laugh... "We were learning comedy at that time, trying out new jokes. If I've hurt or offended anybody, I apologise again... Over time, we have matured, become better and have changed. This won't happen again," he said. Shah, a member of the East India Comedy (EIC) group, said he was apologetic for cracking a joke on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj all those years ago. The comic said he understood the anger behind his old joke and he has deleted the said video. "I should not have cracked a joke on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at all. Once again, I'm very sorry. I have deleted that video. Henceforth, whatever comedy I do, I'll do it thoughtfully and responsibly," he added. While apologising "unreservedly", Banatwalla said he had temporarily suspended his Twitter account as people had been pouring in the "vilest of Islamophobic abuse to me". "It has come to my attention that many people have been upset and offended by tweets I have made many years ago. For that I would like to apologise unreservedly. Many of these were before I even starting doing comedy, but that does not excuse the fact that they were not acceptable," he said. "I am willing to accept my mistakes and grow as a person, and I sincerely hope these people can find it within themselves to do the same," the EIC member tweeted. Last week, a female stand-up comic was subjected to online rape threats and abuses after a year-old video of her allegedly cracking a joke on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue surfaced. She later took down the video and apologised on social media. The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Sunday sought immediate action from Gujarat Police against one Shubham Mishra for allegedly hurling abuses and giving rape threats to the said comedian on social media. Vadodara Police had arrested Mishra on Sunday for the alleged video. Mumbai Police's Cyber Branch, too, took suo motu cognisance of another alleged threatening video against the comedian and arrested Imtiyaz Sheikh, who used the profile 'Umesh Dada' on YouTube, on Monday. Stand-up comedians post apology after old videos, tweets resurface online

Following the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=forbes">Forbes</a> list of <keyword id="2051863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="30-Under-30">30 under 30</keyword> list of <keyword id="310274" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Young-Achievers">young achievers</keyword> that was announced last month where 45 Indians found a mention, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=forbes+india">Forbes India </a>revealed its own 30 under 30 list today, featuring who they described as the cool kids. 
 
The list is a mixture of expected faces and a few new ones. It’s certainly not as exhaustive as the original list, but the list, in its third year now doesn’t fail to pack a punch. 
 Explaining their choices, <keyword id="6373044" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Forbes">Forbes</keyword> put out an article, saying “These young men and women not only fill us with admiration but also, to borrow an acronym from their generation, major FOMO (fear of missing out—yes, that’s a thing). 
 
To compound this angst, let’s remember this list is not exhaustive. It is impossible to cover the geographical expanse of this country and reach every potential candidate. But, as always, our aim is to find the best possible names that meet our three criteria: The extent of the impact of an achievement in a short span of time and its ability to disrupt the status quo; scalability of the business or line of work; and enough indication of being a long-term player. And, as with previous lists, well-established names as well as those who have access to an influential lineage are not considered.” 
 
To make it even simpler for readers, we decided to introduce you to the 30 change makers mentioned in the list, across the 13 categories.

The other contenders in this section was Arpit Dave (23) and Mohit Kumar (27), founders of RoadRunnr and innovator Anirudh Sharma (26) were the other contenders in this category. 
 
Actress <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=richa+chadha">Richa Chadha</a> (28), film-maker Raam Reddy (26) and stand-up comedian Abish Mathew (28) represented the Entertainment category. 
Inshorts which has completely revolutionized the way news is consumed at the present found a mention in the Social Media, Mobile Tech and Communication category. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=harsh+songra">Harsh Songra</a>, the founder of My Child App, and whom Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg dedicated a post to is the youngest person to be on the list at 19. 
 
Equally lauded were Arunima Sinha (28) who took up mountaineering as an amputee after losing her legs in an accident in 2011 when thieves threw her out a moving train and Shreya Singhal (24), a vocal advocate for the speech of freedom and expression, especially on the internet. Singhal is a law student at Delhi University. 
 
Yash Bhanage (29), Founder and COO, Bombay Canteen dominated the food and hospitality category with his already popular Mumbai restaurant. 
 
According to Forbes, the research process was three fold- First, the staff of Forbes India conducted interviews with sources across relevant categories and analyzed media coverage at the same time. Second, applications were invited from entrepreneurs and professionals on forbesindia.com and third, word was spread on social media. 
 
This helped the team arrive on a longlist of 300 across 13 categories, which was then cut down to 100 after weighing in views of experts and from there the Forbes Team took over to make the final selection!
