A recent report by <keyword id="274082" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maple-Capital-Advisors">Maple Capital Advisors</keyword> stated that the Indian gaming sector saw investments of around $544 million between the August 2020 and January 2021 period, a number that is expected to double over the next 12-18 months on the back of higher user awareness and accelerated engagement. Over the past few years, we have seen a number of e-gaming players enter the market. Many of these have been spending substantial amounts on advertising too. One such player, Mobile Premier League (MPL), announced in February this year that it had raised $95 million in a Series D round of funding, bringing its value to $945 million after raising. With this fresh round of funding, MPL planned to expand its eSports portfolio and bolster its efforts to organize more eSports tournaments nationally and internationally at scale. It is also looking at accelerating its international expansion this year. Last month, MPL also acquired esports gaming platform <keyword id="6231572" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="GamingMonk">GamingMonk</keyword> that hosts esports tournaments across multiple platforms. MPL had invested on the Indian Premier League last year and reaped impressive results, it saw the number of gamers on its platform go up 7X post IPL so this year too, the platform had launched an aggressive campaign to grab maximum eyeballs during the league. Another report by investment bank Maple Capital Advisors titled Gaming – India Story stated that by 2024, the overall gaming industry in India is set to be valued at $3,750 million. In the past few months, we have seen people not just take to offline games to spend time with family, a lot of them are enjoying their me-time playing different kinds of online games. Excerpts: Q) The lockdown has come as a blessing in disguise for the gaming industry. What kind of growth has MPL witnessed in the last few months? We witnessed 3-4x overall growth over this period. Number of games played per day for some of our popular titles like WCC increased by 400%. We also saw that new users coming onto our platform played 3-4 different games on average. Q) There has been an overall increase in people taking up gaming from smaller cities. What kind of growth have you witnessed coming in from smaller cities and what are the factors that have accelerated this growth? MPL has always had a substantial presence in Tier II and Tier III cities across the country. A lot of the growth of gaming in smaller cities can be attributed to 4G data and smartphones easily available to more people. We also foresee more growth in this regard as internet and smartphone penetration increases across the country. One of our first digital sports scholars, VS Rathanvel is from Coimbatore and he won the first Chess Mahayudhorganised by MPL in July 2019. The runner-up in the same competition was Ankit Rajpara, who is from Mehsana in Gujarat. Q) What is your revenue model right now? What kind of increase have you seen in in-app purchases in recent months? Are you witnessing people from smaller cities also spend money on gaming? MPL is a gaming platform and we charge a platform fee for paid contests/tournaments. All our games are also available for free. We have seen an increase in our users participating in paid contests and tournaments. Q) How have you been marketing your platform? We just partnered with Kolkata Knight Riders and its sister franchise in the Caribbean- Trinbago Knight Riders - as their principal sponsor. Recently, we even sponsored the Irish Men’s Cricket team for the ODI series against England. These are some of our current marquee brand marketing activities. We also command a good presence in television and digital advertisements and we ensure that the messaging is simple, honest and that it resonates with our audience. Q) Where do you think the next phase of growth for MPL will come from? We are a platform, with a variety of games and content cutting across categories. We will look to add more games from various game developers. Our live-streaming feature for audio and video has also picked up so we are excited about that as well. Q) Where does India rank when it comes to growth in online gaming? Esports has taken off in the country and we have even won a Bronze medal in the Asian Games 2018, where they had esports for the first time. We have a lot of talent in gaming and esports and with the industry becoming mainstream, we can hope to do better on the world stage. Q) What is your vision for MPL? We aim to become a one-stop shop platform for gamers and game developers. We already have 50+ games on our app and have over 15 gaming studios as our developer partners. We want to work with more and more indigenous game developers and give them a platform to showcase their games to our user base. <ul><li>India has banned 177 Chinese mobile apps since June, including key games such as PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends, Chess Rush, Rise of Kingdoms.</li><li>The banning of Chinese <keyword id="1319826" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gaming-apps">gaming Apps</keyword> have opened doors for Indian Gaming platforms.</li><li>We speak to a few Indian gaming companies and experts to find out how Indian Gaming apps benefitted from the ban on Chinese apps so far. </li></ul>India’s ban on another 118 Chinese apps in September, including popular games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Ludo World, Dank Tanks, Ludo All Stars, Arena of Valor, Carrom Friends, Mobile Legends, Rise of Kingdom, Chess Rush opened up room for home-grown gaming apps to rise in the ranks. While only three games were banned in June, the second batch in September put a ban on 35 games. According to Pokkt, the apps that have been banned were contributing about 5% to the total revenue in mobile gaming and about 40-50 % tournaments were happening through PUBG. After the ban on TikTok, we saw many replicas like Instagram Reels, Mitron, Chingari, Bolo Indiya, Roposo, crop up. It opened up an opportunity for Indian video apps to come to the forefront and they have seen millions of downloads in the past month. Did the ban on Chinese Games have a similar effect on the <keyword id="739806" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gaming-industry">Gaming industry</keyword>? We speak to experts and home-grown apps to find out if Indian games have what it takes to fill up the void and crop up as a perfect alternative. Here is what they had to say: Rajan Navani, Vice Chairman &amp; Managing Director, JetSynthesys: The ban on Chinese apps has benefitted many of our platforms, however, the growth we can attribute to this reason alone in the last few weeks is hard to allocate. It would be under 10% on an overall basis. Larger growth has been due to people staying indoors during the lockdown. We do see the surge sustained. We have a lot of promotions and loyalty initiatives within our digital products to retain our consumers even if new opportunities or other older products come back into the market. JetSynthesys Inc is our platform for global growth and we would like to see our international base growing at least 100% in the next year. Shivanandan Pare, CEO Adda52Rummy: The banning of Chinese gaming Apps have opened doors for Indian Gaming platforms. We should see a lot of local players leveraging the opportunity and coming up with new games with local flavour. As far as Rummy is concerned, it is a highly local card game and truly Indian, family card game mostly played in India and amongst Indian Families. So that we never faced any competition from chinese players. The shift due to such events, usually are secular and are sustainable based on user experience in respective platforms. We are very confident that consumers who experience our platform will stay back. We are looking at creating an experience which is immersive and engaging. Over the next 12 months the idea is to give users an extremely differentiated online rummy playing experience. Vaibhav Odhekar, Co-Founder &amp; COO of POKKT: While it's too early to talk numbers, it is a golden opportunity for local developers to explore. Obviously you can’t build a game now, so only if someone was in an advanced stage of development or had a ready product, would seek to maximise most. However, I also feel there are options of other global games like freefire. So Indian developers need to focus on quality because competition is still global. The growth will sustain but the most important factor is quality. So the ban is helping in creating trials / giving developers an opportunity. However if the game is not good or cannot develop traction, the it's a big opportunity lost. In the casual/mass gaming segment, Chinese apps hardly occupied any space. In the esports genre, pretty significant. I might say almost 40 - 50 % tournaments were happening via PubG. In a country where 800 movies are made in a year, it’s difficult to remember each and every film that releases. 
 
But sometimes, we do come across some mind blowing and thought provoking storylines, which remain with us for a long time. Such is the power of storytelling that it makes some stories a part of our lives. 
 
However, while revisiting some of the famous Hindi movies, we realized their script writers conveniently chose to forget that we are living in the Facebook and Twitter age. 
 
Here we list out 4 of them. 
 
1. <keyword id="6373971" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="3-idiots">3 Idiots</keyword> 
The crux of the story and the emotion that appealed to all of us was that two friends, Raju (Sharman Joshi) and Farhan (R. Madhavan), could not find their best friend Rancho (Aamir Khan) for over 5 years, because they didn’t have his address and contact details. However, had the movie released in today’s time when everything goes on internet, they could have easily searched for Ranchhod Das Chanchad and unearthed the secret that lay behind the walls of that Simla mansion. Also, don’t you think that the name of Phunsukh Wangdu, a genius who has patented so many designs, would have found its way to the Facebook news feeds of either Raju Rastogi or Farhan Qureshi? 
 
2. <keyword id="2196546" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raja-Natwarlal">Raja Natwarlal</keyword> 
Although this movie was released in 2014, the audience was actually baffled by the ease with which Raja (Emraan Hashmi) befooled Varda Yadav (Kay Kay Menon). Wouldn’t a multimillionaire business tycoon look up for website of the cricket authority before believing a virtually non-existent agent and handing over a cheque of Rs 100 crore? While Raja could have tampered with Google for the first page of the search results, we are sure that five minutes of Google search would have been enough for Yadav to figure out the con. 
 
3. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein 
A favourite of many, this romantic movie rules many hearts, even after 14 years of its release. The story shows how Maddy (R.Madhavan) makes his love interest Reena (Dia Mirza) believe that he is Rajiv Samra, the man that she has been betrothed to since childhood. But today we are sure that Reena would have done a quick search for the social profiles of Rajiv Samra, only to find the images of Saif Ali Khan giving his coy smile. 
 
4. <keyword id="15117" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="dostana">Dostana</keyword> 
We loved the laughter ride that this movie took us on, but had Neha (Priyanka Chopra) been more brainy, she would have obviously added Kunal (John Abraham) and Sam (Abhishek Bachchan) on Facebook, or followed them on Twitter, only to know that they weren’t gay. There, end of the story!
