JD Vance of Ohio and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/peter-thiel-blake-masters-jim-lamon-arizona-senate-campaign-tech-2022-7">tech billionaire Peter Thiel</a>, was defeated by Abe Hamadeh in a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/abe-hamadeh-blake-masters-primary-arizona-trump-2024-6">crowded GOP primary</a> in Arizona's 8th congressional district. That's despite getting a last-minute boost from <keyword id="19918985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump" source="keywords">Donald Trump</keyword>. After initially endorsing just Hamadeh several months ago, the former president issued a dual endorsement of both Masters and Hamadeh in the final days of the race. That came after Vance, who'd <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-and-potential-vp-jd-vance-disagree-over-nasty-gop-house-primary-2024-7">supported Masters from the beginning</a>, became Trump's running mate. This is the second time Masters has lost an election in two years. In 2022, when he was the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blake-masters-mark-kelly-john-mccain-arizona-senate-seat-election-2022-8">GOP nominee for US Senate in Arizona</a>, he was handily defeated by Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona. It came after a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/abe-hamadeh-blake-masters-primary-arizona-trump-2024-6">remarkably nasty campaign</a>, where Masters — who lives over 100 miles away from the Phoenix-area House district where he was running — painted Hamadeh as sympathetic to terrorists and sought to make an issue out of his Muslim background. The race first began last fall when incumbent Rep. Debbie Lesko decided to retire in the midst of the House's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jim-jordan-speaker-house-stalled-austin-scott-2023-10">struggle to elect a new speaker.</a> <h2>Who is Abe Hamadeh?</h2>Given the GOP lean of the district, the 33-year-old Hamadeh is almost certain to be elected to Congress in November. <div type="image" title="Abe Hamadeh" height="1333" width="1777" msid="112181172" hostid="261"></div>A former prosecutor, he's a close ally of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kari-lake-financial-disclosure-book-sales-paid-speeches-2024-7">Kari Lake</a>, the former gubernatorial candidate who officially became the GOP nominee for <keyword id="20321799" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Senate" source="keywords">US Senate</keyword> on Tuesday. Like Lake, he still has not conceded his 2022 statewide loss: Hamadeh was the party's nominee for state attorney general, and he was ultimately defeated by Democrat Kris Mayes by just 280 votes. He has since filed four lawsuits over the results. He also still suggests that Trump was the rightful winner of the 2020 election. Hamadeh also has an unusual background for a GOP candidate. He's the son of Syrian immigrants, a Muslim father and a Druze mother, who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/elections/2022/08/24/arizona-attorney-general-candidate-abe-hamadeh-father-faced-deportation/10277368002/">faced a deportation order</a> in 1996 after overstaying their visas. They were ultimately allowed to stay in the country in part because their children, including Hamadeh, were citizens. Masters's campaign had <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/MastersPress/status/1775563949313822896">gone as far</a> as to call Hamadeh an "anchor baby." But there's already one major potential issue for his campaign: He lives nowhere near the district.Masters is a resident of Tucson and still lives there, according to Federal Election Commission records. The 8th district is in the Phoenix metro area, and Masters' home is more than 120 miles from the edge of the district.On his <a href="https://www.blakemasters.com/">campaign website</a>, the 2022 candidate seemingly acknowledges that he doesn't actually live there."I'm thrilled at the opportunity to be your next Congressman, here in Arizona's 8th District," he wrote. "I campaigned hard in the West Valley during my run for US Senate, and fell in love with its people and its places."And Masters has another challenge: He's on a collision course with lots of his former allies on the Trump-aligned right.Abe Hamadeh, the 2022 GOP nominee for attorney general, is already running for the seat. Hamadeh has locked up the endorsement of former GOP gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake, other Trump-world figures, and local officials in Arizona. Kyrsten Sinema left the Democratic Party to become an Independent last December, many members of her former party fretted about the implications for her potential 2024 reelection bid.While Sinema has not shifted her voting pattern and is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kyrsten-sinema-party-switch-independent-gop-democrats-arizona-bipartisanship-2023-5">not looking</a> to caucus with Republicans, a possible three-way race looms if she decides to run for a second term in the upper chamber. But based on <a href="https://emersoncollegepolling.com/arizona-2024-senator-kyrsten-sinemas-independent-candidacy-could-help-democrats-for-u-s-senate/">a recently-released Emerson College poll</a>, Sinema's entry into the race may actually give an advantage to Rep. Ruben Gallego, the Phoenix-area lawmaker who's widely seen as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination.In a one-on-one matchup between Gallego and Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, a Republican, both candidates were tied at 42% support in the poll, while 16% of respondents indicated that they were undecided. But in a three-way race with Gallego, Lamb, and Sinema, the Democratic candidate leads with 36% support, followed by Lamb at 29% and Sinema with 21% support — while 15% of respondents were undecided.Similarly, in a one-on-one matchup between Gallego and Republican candidate Brian Wright, the Democrat posted a 41%-38% edge. And in a three-way contest with Gallego, Wright, and Sinema, the congressman leads with 37% support, with Sinema at 26% and Wright with 25% support.One of the more fascinating elements of the polling is Sinema's continued popularity with a sizable bloc of Republicans, a dynamic similar to her 2018 Senate victory when she ran as a Democrat. That year, she peeled off enough Republicans and independents to defeat then-GOP Rep.
