<p>If she's successful, and there's every reason to believe she will, it could lead to a whole new way to buy stuff over the Internet.</p>
<p>Ramamurthy came into the public's eye about a year ago, when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/true-and-co-this-startup-has-the-secret-to-finding-the-perfect-bra-2012-4">True&amp;Co burst onto the scene</a>. It's an online lingerie store that u<span class="st">ses algorithms to guarantee</span> a bra will fit perfectly.</p>
<p>That's a big improvement over the classic bra fitting, which involves a socially uncomfortable situation with a saleswoman and a tape measure.</p>
<p>But a few months ago Ramamurthy split from the company, leaving it in the hands of cofounder Michelle Lam.</p>
<p>"We finished a year and our visions were different for where we wanted to take the company," Lam told Business Insider. So Ramamurthy stepped out, keeping her financial stake.</p>
<p>Ramamurthy wasn't worried about her future when she left. She's exactly the kind of engineering talent who prospers in the Valley. She spent six years at Microsoft, working on its popular Visual Studio software development tool and on Xbox Live. She was poached by Netflix, helping it develop its streaming 3D content service.</p>
<p>Even a little app that she and her husband, <keyword id="1767285" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sriram-Krishnan">Sriram Krishnan</keyword>, wrote on their honeymoon has been successful. He's an ex-Microsoftie, too, and yes, they spent their honeymoon in Hawaii coding together. <a href="http://bubblegum.me/">BubbleGum</a> has become a top Windows Phone 7 app for taking and sharing photos.</p>
<p>BubbleGum has partially inspired the startup she's working on now. It's an e-commerce site to help teach amateur photographers how to take better pictures. (Ramamurthy is an amateur photographer herself.)</p>
<p>Her site will use a recommendation engine, similar to the ones she wrote for bras and movies, to help photographers determine what equipment they need and then help them try before they buy.</p>
<p>She's so early that the startup doesn't have a name yet. But there's still reason to believe she'll have another hit. She's got the backing of Battery Ventures, where she's an entrepreneur-in-residence, and one of her mentors is Cisco bigwig Padmasree Warrior, the company's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cisco-chief-strategy-officer-padmasree-warrior-big-plan-2012-8">chief strategy officer.</a></p>
<p>We promised not to spill more beans than that, but if this recommend/try/buy thing works, it could be a model for others.</p>

First Aarthi Ramamurthy Fixed Bra Shopping Online-Now She's Got An Idea For Photography Equipment

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ex-Google engineers developed a conversational AI chatbot years ago, per <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-ai-chatbot-bard-chatgpt-rival-bing-a4c2d2ad" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a>.</li><li>But Google execs thwarted their efforts to release it to the public due to safety concerns. </li></ul><p>Google is expected to release its widely anticipated <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-bard-google-ai-chatbot-gpt-rival">AI chatbot Bard</a> in the near future. But years ago, two ex-Google engineers pushed their former employer to release a similar chatbot to the public — and they were met with resistance, according to a new report from  <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-ai-chatbot-bard-chatgpt-rival-bing-a4c2d2ad" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a>.</p><p>Around 2018, Daniel De Freitas, who was a research engineer at Google, started working on an AI side project with the goal of creating a conversational chatbot that mimicked the ways humans speak, former colleagues told the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/google-ai-chatbot-bard-chatgpt-rival-bing-a4c2d2ad" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Journal</a>. Noam Shazeer, a software engineer for Google's AI research unit, later joined the project. </p><p>Per the Journal, De Freitas and Shazeer were able to build a chatbot, which they called Meena, that could argue about philosophy, speak casually about TV shows, and generate puns about horses and cows. They believed that Meena could radically change the way people search online, their former colleagues told the Journal. </p><p>But their efforts to launch the bot — which they renamed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-bard-google-ai-chatbot-gpt-rival" rel="nofollow sponsored">LaMDA</a>, which would become the language model behind Bard — reached an impasse after Google executives said the chatbot didn't adhere to its AI safety and fairness standards, per the Journal. Executives thwarted multiple attempts made by the engineers to send the bot to external researchers, add the chat feature to Google Assistant, and launch a demo to the public, the Journal reported.</p><p>Frustrated by the executive response, De Freitas and Shazeer left Google near the end of 2021 to start their own company — despite CEO Sundar Pichai personally requesting they stay and continue working on the chatbot, per the Journal. Their company, which now goes by Character.Ai, has since released a chatbot that can roleplay as figures like Elon Musk or Nintendo's Mario.  </p><p>"It caused a bit of a stir inside of Google," Shazeer <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxFj5jdb6qQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferer" data-type="link">said in an interview</a> with investors Aarthi Ramamurthy and Sriram Krishnan last month. "But eventually we decided we'd probably have more luck launching stuff as a startup."  </p><p>De Freitas and Shazeer declined an interview request from the Journal, and did not respond to Insider's request for comment. Google did not respond to Insider's request for comment.</p><h2>Google has been thwarting its AI efforts since 2012</h2><p>Google's hesitancy to release its AI tools is nothing new.</p><p>In 2012, Google hired Ray Kurzweil, a computer scientist, to work on its language processing models, <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2012/12/14/ray-kurzweil-joins-google-as-engineering-director-focusing-on-machine-learning-and-language-tech/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">TechCrunch reported.</a> About one year later, Google bought British AI firm DeepMind which aimed to create artificial general intelligence, per <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2014/01/26/google-deepmind/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">TechCrunch</a>. </p><p>However, academics and tech experts pushed back on using the tech due to ethical concerns around mass surveillance, the Journal reported, and Google committed to limiting how it would use AI. In 2018, Google ended its project to use its AI tech in military weapons in response to employee backlash, per the Journal.</p><p>But Google's AI plans may now finally see the light of day, even as discussions around whether its chatbot can be responsibly launched continue. The company's chatbot, Bard, will come after Microsoft — <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/microsoft-stock-price-prediction-chatgpt-ai-tech-artificial-intelligence-google-2023-3" rel="nofollow sponsored nofollow sponsored">whose stock is on the rise</a> — released its own chatbot through Bing.</p><p>After Google's Bard chatbot <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ad-ai-chatgpt-rival-bard-gives-inaccurate-answer-2023-2" rel="nofollow sponsored">generated a factual error</a> during its first public demo last month, Google employees were quick to call the announcement <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-employees-criticize-company-ceo-after-bard-ai-announcement-report-2023-2" rel="nofollow sponsored">"rushed" and "botched."</a> The chairman of Alphabet, John Hennessy, agreed that Google's chatbot <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-bard-ai-chatbot-not-ready-alphabet-hennessy-chatgpt-competitor-2023-2">wasn't "really ready for a product yet."</a></p><p>Pichai has asked all Google employees to spend <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-bard-chatbot-googlers-sundar-pichai-2023-2">two to four hours of their time</a> helping test the product so it can be ready for launch. </p><p>"I know this moment is uncomfortably exciting, and that's to be expected: the underlying technology is evolving rapidly with so much potential," Pichai wrote to Google employees in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-bard-chatbot-googlers-sundar-pichai-2023-2">February memo</a>. </p><p>"The most important thing we can do right now is to focus on building a great product and developing it responsibly," he said. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The social-audio app <keyword id="12387925" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="clubhouse" source="Orion">Clubhouse</keyword> has hired its first <keyword id="12387926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="general-counsel" source="Orion">general counsel</keyword>, Insider has learned.</li><li>Anthony Falzone is leaving <keyword id="12003362" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pinterest" source="Orion">Pinterest</keyword>, where he was the deputy general counsel, after nine years.</li></ul><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/using-clubhouse-4-billion-valuation-audio-app-2021-4">Clubhouse</a> has hired away a key early employee at Pinterest to become its first general counsel, Insider has learned.</p><p>Anthony Falzone, who was the second lawyer at Pinterest, is leaving after nine years to join a growing team at Clubhouse, the social-audio app that surged in popularity during pandemic lockdowns. Pinterest has been the subject of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paypal-not-buying-pinterest-sale-acquisition-finance-tech-social-media-2021-10">takeover speculation</a> recently. </p><p>In an email, Falzone said he watched Pinterest "explode in scale" over nine years, building key legal functions and helping establish the company's international structure to pave the way for worldwide growth. "Clubhouse is in a similar stage as Pinterest was when I first joined," he wrote, "and I'm excited to be a part of its success and help the team build a new social platform for a new kind of creator and community building authentic, human connections."</p><p>The growth of Clubhouse has tapered off in recent months, with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clubhouse-downloads-900000-in-april-2021-5">downloads falling</a> and a steady drip of users leaving for rival products from Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify. Still, <a href="https://variety.com/vip/clubhouse-has-cooled-off-in-the-u-s-heres-why-it-shouldnt-panic-1235050042/">data suggest</a> retention remains strong among users.</p><p>Falzone's hire adds to a team of more than 80 employees at the startup, which was founded near the start of the pandemic by a pair of serial entrepreneurs. Clubhouse started 2021 with eight employees but has quickly grown its ranks with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clubhouse-andreessen-horowitz-funding-round-valuation-2021-4">new round of funding</a> in the spring from major investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Tiger Global. </p><p>The new <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clubhouse-top-executives-early-employees-2021-4">brass</a> include:</p><ul><li>NPR's Nina Gregory as head of news and media publishers.</li><li>TED's Kelly Stoetzel as head of thought leadership programming.</li><li>Facebook's Aarthi Ramamurthy as head of international.</li><li>Scale AI's Hunter Scrivner as head of finance.</li><li>Google's Justin Uberti as head of streaming.</li><li>Spotify's Grey Munford as head of global communications.</li><li>Instagram's Chelsea Macdonald as head of entertainment partnerships.</li><li>Wasserman's Sean Brown as head of sports partnerships.</li><li>Netflix's Maya Watson as head of global marketing.</li></ul><p>Falzone, who's in San Francisco, helped build Pinterest from its earliest days. He's represented artists to help them protect their intellectual property on the app, which lets people share images. Falzone previously represented the artist Shepard Fairey in copyright litigation over Fairey's Barack Obama "Hope" posters and was the trial counsel for RDR Books in a copyright dispute with J.K. "The Good Time Show" focuses on peer-to-peer communication - an initiative that resonates with tech leaders like<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/05/elon-musk-lashes-out-at-the-media-again.html"> Musk, who has expressed his displeasure with the media's characterization of his efforts in the past</a>. </p><p>The show is run by Facebook employee Aarthi Ramamurthy and her husband, Sriram Krishnan, who has previously worked for Twitter, Facebook, and Snap. </p><p>The show first captured public attention earlier last week when<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-clubhouse-robinhood-ceo-vlad-tenev-interview-gamestop-stocks-2021-2"> Musk interviewed Robinhood CEO Vladimir Tenev</a> on his controversial decision to<a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/robinhood-lifts-trading-restrictions-reddit-darlings-gamestop-amc-relaxing-limits-2021-2-1030047696"> impose trading restrictions on volatile stocks like GameStop and AMC amid skyrocketing shares</a>.</p><p>Musk promoted the interview on his Twitter account hours ahead of the event. In July,<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kanye-west-says-elon-musk-advising-on-presidential-bid-2020-7"> West said the Tesla CEO was advising him on his 2020 presidential run.</a> </p><h3>Key Clubhouse investor Andreessen Horowitz has an active presence on the show</h3><p>Guests and co-hosts on "The Good Time Show" often include the partners of Andreessen Horowitz, Clubhouse's lead investor. As of Wednesday, Krishnan is a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz.</p><p>"The Good Time Show" could be the beginning of <a href="https://www.newcomer.co/p/the-unauthorized-story-of-andreessen">A16Z's new media efforts,</a> which seek to create a platform to talk about tech without the need to go through journalists or traditional media outlets.</p><p>"We are building a new and separate media property about the future that makes sense of technology, innovation, and where things are going - and now, we're expanding and opening up our platform to do this on a much bigger scale," Margit Wennmachers, a VC at A16Z wrote on a <a href="https://a16z.com/2021/01/25/doubling-down-marketing-update-new-media/">blog post for the site</a>. "We want to be <em>the</em> go-to place for understanding and building the future, for anyone who is building, making, or curious about tech."</p><p>After Musk's interview, A16Z took to Twitter to announce it is releasing a new podcast that would include conversations from Clubhouse, including the one between Musk and Tenev.</p><h3>The Good Time Show has a format unlike other typical talk shows</h3><p>The format for "The Good Time Show," much like the app itself, is highly casual and focuses on organic conversations on anything from startups to venture capitalism and cryptocurrencies.</p><p>But, overall, the talk show is focused on optimism.</p><p>Guests on the show talk about future innovations without skepticism. The show gave Musk the room to talk about developments at his company, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-neuralink-monkey-plays-video-games-using-his-mind-2021-2">Neuralink, that allow for a monkey to operate a video game using only his mind</a> through a chip implant, or for Zuckerberg to discuss his plans for Facebook's Reality Labs group, which works on augmented reality and virtual reality platforms.</p><p>Unlike traditional interviewers, Krishnan and Ramamurthy, as well as their guests, do not appear to push back against the ideas discussed, instead letting them flow freely. In many ways, it could be described as akin to some of the friendlier late-night shows on big networks.</p><p>Outside of A16Z's plans to turn high-profile conversations on the app into a podcast, Clubhouse does not create a permanent record of conversations or messages between users, which could allow for speakers to feel more comfortable expressing their ideas, but has also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clubhouse-anti-semitism-chat-on-yom-kippur-2020-9">prompted some issues with moderation on the app in the past.</a></p><p>The application operates more or less like a virtual chatroom without video - a live podcast of sorts. A Clubhouse spokesperson, along with Ramamurthy and Krishnan, did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication.</p><p>While the app is still invite-only, Clubhouse <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clubhouse-social-network-ceo-interview-public-launch-invites-elon-musk-2021-2">co-founder Paul Davison said the startup is working as quickly as possible to open the application up to all users.</a></p>

It costs $25 to have the box shipped to you.</p><p>Now Lumoid is offering the chance to <a href="https://lumoid.com/apple-watch">include the Apple Watch</a> in that seven-day trail.</p><p>"We'll do all of the hard work of getting the watches," Lumoid founder and CEO Aarthi Ramamurthy said to Business Insider. "We'll have an army of people to camp out and buy them."</p><p><span>You can sign up to rent the Apple Watch on Lumoid's web site, though Ramamurthy says they currently have a waitlist numbering in the thousands. She says wait time will depend on how many watches they're able to purchase.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It'll cost only $45 to include an Apple Watch Sport in the wearables box, $25 of which will go towards purchase, if you do decide to buy it. The Apple Watch Sport <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-watch-price-release-date-2015-3">costs $349</a> for the 38MM model and $399 for the 42MM model.</p><p>If you want to try the steel Apple Watch, it'll cost $55, with $30 of that going towards purchase. <p>I  write about the tech industry, but personally, I've never been that into gadgets. I usually wait for a few iterations of a particular product to come out before I'm ready to make a splurge purchase. </p><p>But I care about my health, and being able to track and monitor my exercise with a device seemed appealing. There are a lot of fitness trackers out there, though, and researching them all was a little intimidating.</p><p>Enter <a href="https://lumoid.com/">Lumoid</a>, a <a href="http://y-combinator.silk.co/page/Lumoid">Y Combinator-backed</a> startup that sends you a box of five wearables to try at home for a week. </p><p>"Everyone is different, and each gadget is personalized," Lumoid founder and CEO Aarthi Ramamurthy said to Business Insider. There was even a FedEx shipping label ready for me to send them all back at the end of the week.</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Over the course of the week, I downloaded each app, wore each device for a day or more, and assessed my options.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span>Some devices I liked more than others. </p><p>The Nike Fuelband, for example, I knew I wouldn't like as soon as I put it on. The band was way too bulky and tight around my wrist - something I wouldn't have known if I had just bought it after researching it online.</p><p>I ended up only wearing it for an hour or so before deciding it wasn't for me.</p><p>I really liked the sleep tracker on the Jawbone UP24. It even has a smart alarm that gently wakes you up when you're in a period of light sleep.</p><p>Still, like with the Nike Fuelband, I wasn't sure I wanted something so large around my wrist. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>My favorite wearable overall was the Jawbone UP Move. </p><p>It might not be the best looking device out there, but it was small and discreet enough that I could attach it to my clothes and wear it comfortably while I slept. Plus, at a price of $50, it was one of the more affordable options in the wearables box. </p><p>The Jawbone app was also easy to use, with hour-by-hour data on the number of steps I had taken and the hours of light and deep sleep I had gotten each night.</p><p>Though the Fitbit One was also small, I thought Jawbone's app was slightly more accurate and efficient.</p><p>Ramamurthy said that Lumoid gets smarter when people choose to buy a certain device after the weeklong trial. </p><p>"We're collecting a ton of data, including why you bought something or not, why you picked one over the other," Ramamurthy said. "We can use that to recommend other products in the future, or go back to the manufacturer and share our findings."<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p><p>There was one glitch - the Misfit Flash was still paired with the person who had rented it before me, and I couldn't get my phone to match with it. This was the last wearable I was going to try before I had to send the box back the next day.
