The Ministry of Labour and Employment recently directed the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (<keyword id="19966712" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EPFO" source="keywords">EPFO</keyword>) to ensure the activation of UAN (<keyword id="20789489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="universal-account-number" source="keywords">Universal Account Number</keyword>) via Aadhar-based OTP. The outreach is part of announcements made during the Union Budget 2024-25, which aim to maximize the net of beneficiaries under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme. The central government has already directed concerned ministries and departments to ensure that payment of all subsidies and incentives under all welfare schemes occurs via the Aadhar Payment Bridge and that 100% biometric Aadhar authentication is achieved. Notably, Aadhaar-based verification eliminates the need for producing multiple documents to prove one's identity. In the first stage, all employers must complete <keyword id="24089674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UAN-activation" source="keywords">UAN activation</keyword> through Aadhar-based OTP for all employees who've joined the company in the current financial year by November 30, 2024. Starting with their latest recruits, employers will have to finish this process for all their employees. As per the budget announcements, the government will implement 3 schemes for 'Employment Linked Incentive' as part of the Prime Minister's package. These will be based on enrollment in the EPFO and focus on recognition of first-time employees and support to employees and employers. The ELI Scheme aims to create over 2 crore jobs in the country in 2 years. This will significantly contribute to increasing employment opportunities and enhancing livelihoods. UAN activation provides employees with seamless access to EPFO's comprehensive online services, enabling them to efficiently manage their Provident Fund (PF) accounts, view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claims in real-time. This allows employees 24/7 access to EPFO services from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to EPFO offices. For the uninitiated, UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each member of EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization). Think of UAN as a single-point number that brings together multiple member IDs that have been allocated to a particular employee. In September this year, EPFO added 18.81 lakh members, registering a 9.33% YoY growth.

EPFO to ensure UAN activation for employees through Aadhaar-based OTP

The government has relaxed provisions of <keyword id="19948097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tds" source="keywords">TDS</keyword>/<keyword id="19950203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tcs" source="keywords">TCS</keyword> in the event of the death of the deductee/collectee before the linkage of PAN and <keyword id="19898107" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aadhaar" source="keywords">Aadhaar</keyword> card. TDS is Tax Deducted at Source and TCS is Tax Collected at Source in India. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has issued a circular dated August 5, in view of genuine difficulties being faced by taxpayers. Through the circular, the government said it has relaxed the provisions of TDS/TCS, as per the Income-tax Act, in the event of death of deductee/collectee before linking of PAN and Aadhaar. In order to redress the grievances of the taxpayers wherein instances have been cited, of demise of the deductee/collectee on or before May 31, 2024 and before the option to link PAN and Aadhaar could have been exercised, the circular provides that there shall be no liability on the deductor/collector to deduct/collect the tax under the relevant section of <keyword id="19936187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="income-tax-act" source="keywords">income tax act</keyword>, pertaining to the transactions entered into up to March 31, 2024. On April 23, 2024, CBDT extended the date for linking of PAN and Aadhaar May for the taxpayers (for the transactions entered into up to March 2024) to avoid higher TDS/ TCS, as per the income tax act. Under the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961, every person who has been allotted a PAN as on July 1, 2017 and is eligible to obtain <keyword id="20030312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-Number" source="keywords">Aadhaar Number</keyword>, is required to intimate his Aadhaar to the prescribed authority, on payment of a prescribed fee. Failure to do so shall attract certain repercussions under the income tax act. As per government, the PAN of taxpayers who have failed to intimate their Aadhaar, as required, shall become inoperative and the consequences during the period that PAN remains inoperative will be as follows: 1. No refund shall be made against such PANs 2. Interest shall not be payable on such refund for the period during which PAN remains inoperative 3. TDS and TCS shall be deducted /collected at higher rate, as provided in the income tax act.

This can be done on the NSDL portal. Not being able to file returns will be a serious handicap as the last day for filing returns is July 31. Also, as per Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, if an individual fails to quote or furnish her PAN as required by the Income Tax Law, a penalty of ₹10,000 can be levied. The tweet also highlights an additional measure taken to facilitate the linking process: the introduction of biometric-based authentication, which can be accessed at dedicated centres of PAN Service Providers (Protean &amp; UTIITSL). According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), updating address details on Aadhaar can be done online through the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP). However, for updating other details such as demographic information (name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, email) and biometrics (fingerprints, iris and photograph) in Aadhaar, it is necessary to visit a Permanent Enrolment Centre. This allows for a larger accumulation towards the pension fund over the course of their working years. Bank locker agreement The <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) has set a new deadline for banks to update their locker agreements. It is required for banks to prepare the locker agreement on stamp paper, with the banks being responsible for providing the stamp paper at no cost to the customers. The revised agreement is designed to protect the interests of locker holders, by promoting transparency and providing clear information on the terms and conditions governing the use of the locker facility. By December 31, 2023, banks are mandated to complete the phased renewal of these agreements. The RBI expects banks to achieve 50% enrollment by June 30, and 75% enrollment by September 30. If you have received a message from your bank, you need to complete the formalities as soon as possible. Payment of advance tax In India, salaried individuals, self-employed professionals and businesses whose estimated tax liability for the financial year exceeds ₹10,000 are required to pay advance tax in installments during the year. If you are a salaried employee, the employer will deduct the required taxes and you do not need to pay advance tax if you do not have any other source of income. Advance tax has to be paid in four installments, the first installment of 15%, needs to be paid by June 15. Mutual fund, trading and demat account nomination deadline This is not in June. As per regulatory guidelines, investors are required to mention nominees for their fund folios or notify the fund house of their decision to opt out of nominations by September 30. This ensures that appropriate arrangements are in place for the transfer of assets in case of the investor's demise, and thus it is important. The earlier deadline was 31 March. The deadline for mentioning nominees for trading and demat accounts is also September 30.
