Aadhaar Hackathon 2021 – how to participate, prize money, rules and more

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>For the second year in a row, Salesforce.com is hosting a hackathon that will dole out $1 million in prizes.
But after last year's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/salesforcecom-hackathon-apology-2013-12">disastrous contest</a>, which wound up costing the company $2 million in cash and a red face, it has changed the rules.
And, sadly, the biggest prize in hackathon history is gone.
Instead of giving out one huge $1 million prize to a team like it did last year, Salesforce is divvying up the prize money among many winners.
That said, the <a href="https://developer.salesforce.com/million-dollar-hackathon?utm_campaign=df14hack&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=new-rules">grand prize winner can still win a hefty sum: $250,000</a>.
Two more winners will win $100,000 apiece, three second-place winners will walk with $50,000, three third-place winners will get $35,000, and more than 20 others will win between $10,000 and $20,000.
All they have to do is build a spectacular mobile app using one or more of Salesforce.com's cloud services, and follow <a href="https://developer.salesforce.com/million-dollar-hackathon?utm_campaign=df14hack&amp;utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=new-rules">a bunch of new rules.</a>
A hackathon is a contest where developers write something new over a short period of time, often pouring their souls into the project and giving up sleep for days on end. It's a developer's idea of a really fun time.
This year's Salesforce.com hackathon took place over the weekend, October 10-12. The judging is going on now as part of Salesforce.com's huge annual customer conference in San Francisco.
Salesforce.com set off an uproar in the developer community last year <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-investigates-1-million-prize-2013-11">when it awarded the massive $1 million grand prize </a>to a team of developers accused of breaking the contest rules.
The winning team included former employees who had left Salesforce.com only months before, and they had submitted an app that included code that was written long before the contest began.
Some developers also complained that Salesforce.com didn't <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-investigates-1-million-prize-2013-11">treat their projects with due respect, either. </a> (One even wrote about a blog post she called <a href="https://medium.com/hackers-and-hacking/b839268fb82d">"The Dirty Secret Behind the Salesforce $1M Hackathon."</a>)
So many people were upset that CEO and cofounder Marc Benioff, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-fab-life-of-billionaire-marc-benioff-2014-2">who started his career as a teen developer</a>, even <a href="https://twitter.com/Benioff/status/404128608496529409">weighed in on Twitter</a> and promised to make things right.
After that, the company issued <a href="http://blogs.developerforce.com/developer-relations/2013/12/update-on-salesforce1-hackathon-feedback-review.html">an apology,</a> and then gave a second $1 million prize the runner-up team. It let the original winners keep their $1 million, too.
And it promised to do better this year.
So we checked and the rules have been changed. Former employees are not eligible to participate unless they've been gone from the company for over two years. Hackers have to be clear about what code they wrote during the contest and what, if any, they pulled from an existing open-source project. Most importantly, teams will get to show off their new creations to judges and get the feedback they crave.
It should all lead to a very happy ending this year, even if no one becomes an instant millionaire.

After Last Year's Debacle, Salesforce.com Fixes Its $1 Million Hackathon

EY is looking to hire 9,000 techies in 2021 to boost its digital services

<ul><li><keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> will start showing app’s data privacy information in the Play Store from February 2022.</li><li>Developers can now submit these details about their apps for review.</li><li>Google will display information like the data that the app collects, whether the data is required to use the app and whether the data is encrypted.</li></ul>Google has started letting developers fill out details for the new data privacy section in the Play Store. Similar to Apple’s privacy labels in the App Store, Google will start showing details about apps in the Play Store. Google plans to launch this feature in February 2022. Developers can find the ‘Data safety form’ under ‘App Content’ in the Google Play Console. The idea behind this new practice is to monitor the information that apps collect or share, and also to identify the safety details that are in place. The safety details will highlight if the app’s data is encrypted in transit, if the app follows Google Play’s families policy, and if it has been independently reviewed for “conformance with a global security standard”. <div type="image" title="google play store apps" msid="87137160" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;App details that will be displayed in the Play Store.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> Users will be able to see these details under the ‘Data safety’ section of apps. This includes data like location, contacts, personal information, financial information and more. Developers also have to explain how the data is used for app functionality, personalisation and more. It will also include information on whether data collection is optional or required to use the app. Google is giving developers time until April next year to finish submitting the relevant information and also receive approval for the same. Apps that are updated will start showing the data and privacy details from February onwards. As for those developers that fail to do so, Google may reject new app submissions and app updates as well. Google starts starts testing new safety section for apps, feature to go live in February 2022

Today <a href="http://blogs.developerforce.com/developer-relations/2013/12/update-on-salesforce1-hackathon-feedback-review.html">it issued an apology</a> and agreed to award another $1 million to a new team, the second-place winners, who wrote an app called Healthcare.Love. As second prize winners, Healthcare.Love had originally won $50,000.
But Salesforce.com is also standing by its first choice and allowing the original winners to keep their $1 million, too.
The original grand prize of $1 million was the biggest ever for a <keyword id="1604076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hackathon">hackathon</keyword>, which is an event where developers gather together and work nonstop to build something new in a short amount of time.
Other developers complained that the winning app wasn't newly created and shouldn't have been eligible to win. Salesforce explained that existing apps could win, but would only be judged by the new features built as part of the contest.
However, the company admitted that it didn't do a good job of letting the final judges know that they were only supposed to look at the new features, <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/salesforcecom-announces-two-1-million-winning-teams-for-the-salesforce1-hackathon-2013-12-02">it said</a>.
Developers had other complaints about the month-long hackathon. Some said the judges didn't adequately look at all the apps. Alicia Liu, part of development team SalesRun <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-investigates-1-million-prize-2013-11">told Business Insider that this bothered her most.</a>
Salesforce.com also skipped most people's favorite part: they never showed off the submissions, allowing developers to see what the other teams did and get feedback on their own work. Salesforce.com is rectifying that now, <a href="http://salesforce1million.challengepost.com/submissions">putting them all online. </a>
After the uproar, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/benioff-agrees-he-should-judge-hackathon-2013-11">CEO Marc Benioff got involved,</a> tweeting that Salesforce was investigating the whole event. Benioff, who is also a programmer, promised to make things right. And in the end, the company did eat a lot of crow. Salesforce.com's Adam Seligman <a href="http://blogs.developerforce.com/developer-relations/2013/12/update-on-salesforce1-hackathon-feedback-review.html"> wrote things in his apology post like:</a>
We didn't get this right ...
Our judges reviewed every submission, but we passed zero feedback to participants. This was a big miss. ...
We sent an impersonal email to all participants ... This was a lame mail to send at 3:30 in the morning.
Finally, we plan to do more Salesforce1 Hackathons! We'll partner with an outside firm to execute them. It's not our core competency.

The accusers - writing anonymously on a message board dedicated to the hackathon - say the programmers submitted an app that was already in the works long before the contest was announced.
<a href="http://events.developerforce.com/dreamforce/hackathon">The Hackathon rules allowed teams to start work on Oct. 25,</a> when the hackathon and prize <a href="http://www.salesforce.com/company/news-press/press-releases/2013/10/131025.jsp">were announced</a>. The final coding was done live this week as part of Salesforce's annual conference, "Dreamforce," held in San Francisco.
A team of two developers won the prize, Thom Kim and Joseph Turian, for a voice-activated app called Upshot. Kim had previously worked at Salesforce as an engineer for nine years and had left Salesforce in January. We reached out to both men for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Upshot lets Salesforce users generate reports by talking to their smartphones and asking the phone to create the report.
But developers found evidence that Upshot team member Kim was publicly demonstrating the app to Salesforce.com users <a href="http://www.meetup.com/Salesforce-com-Integration-Analytics/events/136920332/">at this Meetup event on Oct. 8</a>.
"Zulishah," <a href="http://salesforce1million.challengepost.com/forum_topics/2647">writing on a Challengepost.com comments board dedicated to the Salesforce hackathon</a>, says:

Another angry developer is demanding that Salesforce.com disqualify Upshot. User "<a href="http://challengepost.com/users/livedash" target="_blank">livedash</a>" wrote:
This is shocking that (a) Upshot guys (Turian, you are better than this!) thought they were eligible and (b) they aren't disqualified immediately and (c) **no one from Salesforce seems to care about their own rules or the spirit of a hackathon** ... our attorney is going to make sure Salesforce has to respond to this blatant violation of their own rules.
We reached out to Salesforce.com for comment and will update when we hear back.

People Are Furious That Salesforce Gave These Two Programmers $1 Million

Liu's story made me reach out to Salesforce.com Marc Benioff directly with a suggestion on how he could fix the angry feelings created by the <keyword id="1604076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hackathon">hackathon</keyword>. 
He replied to my suggestion (posted below), but before we get to that, let's recap:
Salesforce gave a $1 million grand prize to two programmers, one of whom was a former employee, for an app found to be created before the hackathon contest.
The $1 million was the biggest ever prize for a hackathon, which is an event where developers gather together and work nonstop to build something new. Hackathons often take place over 24 to 48 hours.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-investigates-1-million-prize-2013-11">Developers were angry</a>. They accused Salesforce of granting the prize to an app that had broken the hackathon rules.
Another big complaint was that not all the apps that were submitted by the 149 participants were even opened and looked at by the judges.
Typically the pinnacle of a hackathon is when all the submissions are displayed and developers can admire each other's work. That didn't happen in this case, Liu says.
She says she personally spent 150 hours working on her app, nights and weekends for a month, only to discover that the email to the judges containing the app was never opened, the code never installed and run. Judges may have looked only at a video her team submitted that demonstrated the app.
She told Business Insider that "It's not unreasonable that for a 4-week-long hackathon that they put in the effort to actually look at some/most of the actual apps, which took considerable effort to build. ... We're not being sore losers, we just don't want to be jerked around. "
So on Sunday, I emailed Marc Benioff and suggested how he could make this right:
Here's the email I sent:
I'm writing about this $1 million hackathon prize and how upset people are. Would be cool if you would announce that you, personally, will look at all the submissions. You're a developer.
You know how harsh it is when people spend their nights and weekends building something, and they are proud and excited about what they built, and no one even looks at it (as some developers are accusing).
You could turn this whole thing around by spending your own weekend looking at the submissions.

Hopefully, Benioff gives each developer some feedback on the work that they did. But so far, even with all the controversy, Salesforce.com hasn't given much exposure to the developers who submitted projects that didn't win.
On the hackathon's website, <a href="http://salesforce1million.challengepost.com/submissions">under the tab "submissions," as of right now</a>, it shows only five apps: The five winners. No mention of the remaining 144.

But that wouldn't necessarily be a dis-qualifier, Seligman said in the <a href="http://blogs.developerforce.com/developer-relations/2013/11/addressing-questions-about-the-salesforce-1-million-hackathon.html">a blog post.</a>
That's because Salesforce.com had <a href="%20http://boards.developerforce.com/t5/Salesforce-1-Million-Hackathon/developed-solely-as-part-of-this-Hackathon/td-p/702029">told developers during the contest</a> that it was ok for them to use older code in their hackathon app. The judges were supposed to ignore that older code and only look at the new features built after the contest was announced.
Another accusation was that judges didn't even look at all the apps submitted before handing the prize to a former employee. These complaints were aired on a <a href="http://salesforce1million.challengepost.com/forum_topics/2647">Salesforce.com discussion forum</a> and in a thread on <a href="https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6778546">Hacker News.</a>
Alicia Liu, part of team "Testflight," also wrote a long blog post about her experience at the hackathon, called <a href="https://medium.com/hackers-and-hacking/b839268fb82d">"The Dirty Secret Behind the Salesforce $1M Hackathon."</a> After her team submitted their app:
"I saw a bland standard rejection email ... specifically stating no judging feedback will be given. ... the Testflight email with our [app] wasn't even opened. ... Having spent collectively over 150 hours working on something, giving up nights and weekends, and not even have someone actually look at our app left a distinctively sour taste."
Seligman responded to those accusations in his post, too, saying, "Every eligible app entry was reviewed at least twice."
Liu told Business Insider:
"I don't deny they looked at our video, though we can't verify. But they say they had 80 judges, and there were only 149 submissions. It's not unreasonable that for a 4-week-long hackathon that they put in the effort to actually look at some/most of the actual apps, which took considerable effort to build. And their rules specifically say the app has to be able to be run on judges' phones."
Others also said that some of the teams that won prize money got extra help from Salesforce.com. One participant, <a href="https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6778546">Melvin Tercan</a>, wrote on Hacker News:
One of the finalist teams didn't make the check-in time, so they extended the check-in by a few hours ... You could tell it was just a dog and pony show on the second day. Some people were helped, some weren't. Then, when you submitted, all you got was a "sorry, you're not chosen" ... Nothing telling you where you could have improved, nothing saying what your score was, no information at all. ... Won't be coming back, that's for sure.
As Lui told Business Insider:
"I think people just want to be treated fairly. If Salesforce is going to run a dog and pony show that's fine, but don't make everyone follow 12(!) pages of rules and then disregard them. We're not being sore losers, we just don't want to be jerked around. I think this has really struck a chord with the dev community and people at large are upset and fed up with corporate "hackathons" which aren't really hackathons at all."
Salesforce.com declined further comment, except to point to a couple of tweets by Salesforce.com Marc Benioff <a href="https://twitter.com/Benioff/status/404128608496529409">where he said,</a> "We are doing a full review of the Hackathon. We always respond to feedback, and this will be no different. It must be a legitimate victory." <a href="https://twitter.com/Benioff/status/404128608496529409">He also promised,</a> "We will address every issue raised by the community."

Salesforce.com Is 'Reviewing' Its Controversial Decision To Award These Two Developers $1 Million

On Thursday it awarded the money to two developers who created a voice-activated app called Upshot.
Upshot, built by Thom Kim and Joseph Turian, lets Salesforce.com users generate reports by asking their phones for them, reports TechCrunch's <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/21/two-harvard-university-alum-win-salesforce-1m-hackathon-prize-at-dreamforce-for-mobile-service-to-create-reports/">Alex Williams, who was also one of the judges for the event.</a>
A hackathon is when developers work non-stop to build something new. In this case, <a href="http://events.developerforce.com/dreamforce/hackathon">the event began on Monday</a> as part of Salesforce.com's annual conference, Dreamforce, taking place this week in San Francisco. Dozens of teams participated and five teams walked away with prize money.
The $50,00 prize went to an app called Healthcare.lov. A $25,0000 prize went to one called Hirebase for annotating resumes. The $10,000 prize went to Salesfetch, a service that helps salespeople search for info on leads. And $5,000 went to to2lementary, an app that lets you identify people as they walk up to a booth.
In addition to turning the top two programmers into half-millionaires, it was pretty fun to see them walking through San Francisco holding the physically enormous check.

Salesforce.com Just Handed These Two Programmers A Million Dollars

New Delhi, Jan 20 () An India-Africa conference on e-governance is being planned here in March to ensure that benefits of digital platforms are made available for the empowerment of African citizens, a senior official said on Monday.
 The conference 'Digital Africa: Empowered Citizens' will witness participation of policy makers and government officials from India and 54 African countries.
 "The Ministry of External Affairs-led initiative in collaboration with the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and National Centre for Good Governance envisages convening an Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) India-Africa e-governance with focus on enhanced south-south cooperation for sharing the benefits of e-governance for improved service delivery," DARPG Additional Secretary V Srinivas said. 
 He said discussions have been held with African ambassadors in Delhi and the preparations have commenced.
 "Dates for the conference in March 2020 are expected to be announced shortly," Srinivas told .
 The objective of the conference is to ensure the benefits of digital platforms are made available for empowerment of the African citizens, another official said.
 India has a number of success stories on how technology is used to provide efficient services while improving the quality of life of the citizen, he said.
 "An innovative feature of the ITEC India-Africa e-governance conference is that it provides a forum for government, business and academia from India and Africa while also seeking to crowdsource ideas on strengthening the collaboration through hackathon," the officer said.
 The conference will have eight sessions to cover an array of subjects including e-governance, fintech and capacity building, while also exploring business partnerships and identifying a roadmap forward, he said.
 India's several successful initiatives like BharatNet (a programme on providing broadband connectivity to all households), DigiLocker (platform for issuance and verification of documents and certificates), BHIM (unified payment interface) and Aadhaar enabled payment services, and its benefits would be highlighted during the event, the officer added. American Express and TechGig call for women coding contest — Geek Goddess

And with it, CEO Ginni Rometty sent an uplifting email to the troops about how IBM is doing in turning around its workforce.In it Rometty announced several surprising statistics, including that IBM has already grown its headcount by a whopping 30,000 people in its fiscal first half.Much of that was through hiring though some of that was through acquisitions. New Delhi, Mar 5 () A parliamentary panel has observed that there is a lot of dissatisfaction and fear among people on the upcoming National Population Register (NPR) and census and asked the government to have a national consensus on the two exercises to be carried out from next month so that there is absolute clarity and no apprehension in anyone's mind.The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, headed by Congress leader Anand Sharma, also said it would like the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to explore the feasibility of using the Aadhaar metadata for the Census and updating the NPR in 2020-21."The committee recommends that all the states and Union territories should be fully convinced on various issues pertaining to the NPR, which commences in April, to have a national consensus so that there is absolute clarity and no apprehension among people across the country, which will help in conducting these exercises in a smooth manner," the panel said in its report submitted to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.The house-listing phase of the 2021 census and the exercise to update the NPR will be carried out from April 1 to September 30.The committee observed that there was a lot of dissatisfaction and fear among people regarding the upcoming NPR and census."The committee also feels that these apprehensions should have been duly ventilated in the media. The MHA must consider some way out so that the census goes smoothly. Otherwise, there is quite a chance of the entire process being stymied in many states," the report said.During its deliberations with MHA officials, the committee sought to know about the new parameters or new questions that have been put in the upcoming NPR and whether the states have been consulted or not and whether any effort has been made to build a national consensus as regards the changed parameters.The ministry submitted that during the process to update the NPR 2020, it was proposed to collect data on some additional aspects such as place of last residence, mother tongue, Aadhaar number (voluntary), mobile number, passport number (for an Indian Passport holder), voter identity card number, driving license number, date and place of birth of father and mother.Besides, the data on date and place of birth of parents was collected in the NPR 2010 as well for all parents who were enumerated within the household, the ministry said, adding that for the parents living elsewhere or expired at the time of enumeration, only the names were collected.To facilitate back-end data processing and making the data items of date and place of birth complete for all households, the details of parents are being collected in a more comprehensive manner in NPR 2020, the ministry said.The panel noted the submission of the MHA on the upcoming census and NPR and said it was not quite convinced with its reply that Aadhaar was an individual data and in order to create a family database, the NPR exercise was undertaken.The committee is of the opinion that Aadhaar is not just an individual's data but it is also tied up with ration card, pan card etc."The Aadhaar metadata also includes the entire family's surname, address etc. Therefore, the committee fails to understand as to why this should be treated as individual data only," it said.The panel observed that a huge amount was already spent on data collection under Aadhaar. But in the Budget Estimate 2020-21, an amount of Rs 4,568 crore was allocated for the Registrar General of India (RGI) for census 2021.The committee is of the view that Aadhaar data should be used in the upcoming Census to reduce duplicacy and wastage of expenditure.Replying to a question of the committee, the MHA said there was no proposal to undertake biometric identification in the upcoming census 2021. Further, it is forthe first time in the history of the census that census 2021 is going to be undertaken in the digital mode by adopting a mix mode approach for data collection.Enumerators can collect and submit data directly through a mobile app, using his or her smartphone or they can use a paper schedule to collect data and submit the same through a mobile app. Alternatively, the enumerators can also use a paper schedule only to collect and submit the data, it said.
