The ticker will broadcast live prices of BSE’s almond futures contract along with currency derivatives rates. This move will lead to increased price transparency and will help market participants in effective decision making. "The launch of (the) ticker at the APMC market will help market participants gauge overall market sentiment at any point of time. Wide dissemination of prices will be used as reference for physical market transactions, which in turn will positively impact the lives of traders especially when the intensity of information needed in commodities market is increasing day by day,” said <keyword id="300102" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sameer-patil" source="Orion">Sameer Patil</keyword>, chief business officer, BSE. BSE launched what it claims is the world’s only almond futures contract in June 2020. This had been well received by the market participants, it said. Since its launch, the almonds futures contract has seen physical deliveries to the tune of 2.4 lakh kg, along with 52,162 tonnes being traded, aggregating to ₹18,659 million. “This is unprecedented and one of its kind. BSE launches ticker at Navi Mumbai's APMC Market to display dry fruit prices

They are also concerned about minimum support price guarantee, without price regulation in place. Sitharaman says the changes will empower farmers Making the announcement, Sitharaman said that farmers should have the freedom of choice to sell their agricultural produce at attractive prices. Further, she said that no other industry restricts producers from selling their product to whomever they want, and at their desired prices. To solve this problem, Sitharaman said that the central government is working on a law. This will remove barriers to inter-state trade and allow farmers to sell their produce to the highest bidder, which should result in increasing their incomes. Apart from this, she also said that a framework for online trading of agricultural produce will also be worked upon. It is likely that this framework will be on the lines of e-NAM, which is a national agriculture market with an online trading platform for farmers. What’s wrong with APMCs? APMCs were set up with the intention to increase farmers’ incomes by making it easier to sell their produce without having to deal with commission agents. However, the government criminalised setting up of competing markets in the same area, essentially creating a monopoly in the form of APMCs. This led to traders forming cartels to artificially lower prices of the agriculture produce they buy from farmers. A 2012 <a href="https://www.cci.gov.in/sites/default/files/AO.pdf">report</a> by the Competition Commission of India cites the example of a visit to Ahmednagar APMC which revealed collusion among traders. These traders then sell the produce at higher prices to end consumers. While APMCs were formed to benefit farmers, it’s the traders who end up milking both farmers as well as consumers. Just when you thought that the newly introduced Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes can’t be counterfeited because of extra ‘high security’ features, a farmer in <keyword id="6354780" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka">Karnataka</keyword> has received a fake note already. 
 <keyword id="4192" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok">Ashok</keyword>, a farmer in <keyword id="6414863" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chikkamagaluru">Chikkamagaluru</keyword> was selling onions in the market when an unknown man handed him over Rs 2000 note after a purchase. Afterwards Ashok showed the note to his friends, who discovered that the note is a mere photocopy of the original note, trimmed at the edges with scissor. 
 "It was a photocopy of the original notes... anybody can notice it easily. The person was given the copy by a man in <keyword id="6366428" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="APMC">APMC</keyword> market," Superintendent of Police K. <keyword id="239882" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Annamalai">Annamalai</keyword> said. 
 The new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes that <keyword id="1485126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Bank-RBI">Central Bank RBI</keyword> is issuing starting from Friday are being called "high security" notes and have several new features to make them harder to fake than the 500 and 1,000 rupee notes that were scrapped from Tuesday midnight. 
 The new 2,000 rupee note, said the <keyword id="50847" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank">Reserve Bank</keyword> or <keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword> in a statement, will include several features like a see-through register with the denominational numeral 2,000 which can be seen when the note is held up against light. 
 
There will also be a latent image with the denominational numeral 2,000, which can be seen when the bank note is held at a 45 degree angle at the eye level. 
 
The note will also have a colour-shifting windowed security thread with the inscription 'भारत', RBI and 2,000. The colour of the thread will change from green to blue when the note is tilted. 
 For the visually-impaired, there will a raised print of <keyword id="6355532" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahatma-Gandhi">Mahatma Gandhi</keyword>'s portrait, the Ashoka Pillar emblem, bleed lines and identity marks. 
 The RBI said the 2,000 rupees notes have a motif of the Mangalayan, India's <keyword id="47638" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mars">Mars</keyword> mission and the base colour is magenta.

Even Rs 2000 note isn't foolproof enough; fake note found in Karnataka

Nashik, <keyword id="519104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="onion-traders" source="Orion">Onion traders</keyword> have said that they suspended auctions in all agriculture produce market committees in Nashik district of Maharashtra and their protest will continue indefinitely, a development raising the fear of shortage of the kitchen staple in retail markets and hike in prices. An office-bearer of the Nashik District <keyword id="50894" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="onion" source="Orion">Onion</keyword> Traders Association (NDOTA) said on Wednesday they were protesting against the Union government's recent move to increase <keyword id="139959" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="export-duty" source="Orion">export duty</keyword> on onions up to 40 per cent, which will remain in force till December 31. Taking serious cognisance, the District Sub-registrar, Co-operative Societies, on Wednesday night issued an order directing all APMCs to suspend or cancel the licences of the striking traders and submit the Action Taken Report on September 21. "In protest against the export duty hike decision, we have decided to shut the auction of onions in all APMCs in the district indefinitely. This (export duty hike) decision of the Centre will not only make export of onions difficult but it will also affect the onions in transit, causing huge loss to farmers," the office-bearer said. Earlier on Wednesday, Maharashtra marketing minister Abdul Sattar said that observing a bandh (shutting auctions of onions) was not right. "Secretaries in the departments of cooperation and marketing will discuss the action to be taken as per rules and Nashik district collector will take the necessary action," he said on the sidelines of an event. Notably, auctions of onions remained closed at most of the APMCs in Nashik district, including at Lasalgaon, the largest wholesale onion market in India, on August 20. "We had given time till September 19 to the government to find a solution to our demands. But as our demands are not agreed to yet, we have decided to shut the auction of onions indefinitely," the office-bearer said. The other demands raised by traders include the cancellation of export duty on onions, a 50 per cent reduction in market fees, participation by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) in auctions and a 50 per cent subsidy in transport of onions. Accordingly, onion auctions did not take place in all APMCs in Nashik district on Wednesday including in the Lasalgaon APMC. No onions arrived at APMCs, sources said. The government order mentions that Khandu Deore, president of Nashik District Onion Traders Association, had written a letter on September 13 to minister Sattar mentioning four demands and warning of not participating in onion auctions from September 19. Accordingly, the minister has organized a meeting of officials of the Marketing department on September 26. The minister also requested the traders to defer the agitation. Despite that the traders and brokers resorted to strike which has caused many problems for farmers in the sale of various agri produce, the order said. "Even in the meeting held by the government on Wednesday (Sep 20), the traders and brokers remained adamant on their stand. As a result, the order of immediate legal action has been issued," it said. Accordingly, as per the Maharashtra Agriculture Produce Marketing (Development and Regulation) Act, 1963, all the APMCs should make optional arrangements and take necessary measures to continue the sale and purchase deals of agri produce. APMCs have the right to suspend or cancel the licenses of such traders. As per the provision, the APMCs should immediately suspend or cancel the licenses of such traders. In addition, a necessary process should be implemented to issue licenses to new buyers who want to purchase goods at the APMCs, the order said. If an APMC fails to follow the order, action will be taken against the board of directors and the secretary, the order added.

Onion traders in Nashik district go on indefinite strike over export duty; govt orders strict action

Even as the soaring prices of tomatoes are burning a hole in the common man's pocket, a farmer from Pune in Maharashtra has become a millionaire by selling his bountiful yield of the key kitchen staple for ₹3 crore in just over a month while overcoming various challenges. Farmer Ishwar Gaykar (36), from Pachghar village in Junnar tehsil of Pune district, had faced a difficult decision of dumping a large quantity of harvested tomatoes in May this year due to low prices. Undeterred by the setback, he continued to exhibit unwavering determination and work tirelessly on his 12-acre farm to cultivate tomatoes. Now, amid the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, Gaykar's hard work has paid off handsomely, transforming him into a millionaire as he claimed to have earned ₹3 crore through the sale of his crop yield between June 11 and July 18. Talking to PTI, Gaykar said during the period, he sold 18,000 crates of tomatoes (each crate comprising 20 kg of tomatoes) at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Narayangaon in Junnar tehsil for ₹3 crore. He aims to earn another ₹50 lakh by selling the remainder of the produce, which is roughly 4,000 crates. The total input cost of cultivation, including transportation, was ₹40 lakh, he said. "I have an 18-acre farm where I cultivate tomatoes on 12 acres. I have sold 18,000 crates since June 11 and have so far earned ₹3 crore," said Gaykar. On June 11, his produce fetched a price of ₹770 per crate (₹37-38 per kg), and on July 18, he sold tomatoes at ₹2,200 per crate (₹110 per kg ). Gaykar, who is now happy to earn handsome dividends on the produce, recalled how he had to dump a large quantity of harvested tomatoes just two months back due to low prices. "This is the best of times for the tomato growers, but we have witnessed worst times also. In the month of May, I grew tomatoes on one-acre land, but had to throw away large quantities of the produce as the prices were very low. I had thrown the produce away as the per crate rate was just ₹50, which means ₹2.50 per kg," he said. Gaykar also said that in 2021, he incurred losses worth ₹15-16 lakh and last year also he just earned a narrow profit margin. "When I was throwing the tomatoes in May this year, this yield on the 12-acre land was under cultivation. Undeterred by the setback, I kept up my resilience and commitment towards farming and continued spending on the cultivation of tomatoes," he said. "I took good care of the produce even in the scorching May heat. Due to the high temperatures, tomato cultivation in other parts took a beating, but farmers like me benefitted as we continued to work hard," he said. Another farmer Raju Mahale, who earned more than ₹20 lakh by selling 2,500 crates in the current season, said he was also jittery about tomato cultivation after May as the per acre input cost was around ₹3.5 lakh. But, he went ahead with the cultivation, receiving good dividends now. Narayangaon agriculture market trader Akshay Solat, who purchased Gaykar's produce, said as there was a boom in the market again, he purchased tomatoes at ₹ 2,400 per crate. "I have been in this trading business for the last 15 years, but I have never seen such a boom in the tomato market. Once there was a rate of ₹ 1,500 to ₹ 1,600 per crate, but such price-wise consistency in the tomato market was never witnessed," he said. He, however, said only a handful of farmers have earned handsomely this season, including farmers from Pachghar, Otur, Ambegavhan, and Rokdi. Narayangaon APMC chief Sanjay Kale said generally in this season, their market receives 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh crates of tomatoes per day, but in the current season, it has dropped to 30,000 to 35,000 crates per day. "In the last two years, farmers incurred huge losses and could not recover their production costs, which resulted in a drop in production. During the summers, the tomato crop suffered from diseases, forcing the farmers to abandon their tomato farms," he said. "I generally get tomatoes from across the state, but because of the aforementioned reasons, the market committee is receiving the produce from Junnar and Ambegaon tehsils. These are the reasons why tomato prices have skyrocketed and demand has soared," he said. Kale said since the production of tomatoes has taken a beating in north India, traders from other states come to the market in Narayangaon to purchase the key kitchen staple. The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) last week started selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of ₹ 90 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Patna in a bid to provide relief to consumers amid the high prices. The Centre had directed the two cooperatives to procure tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for distribution in major consumption centres, where retail prices have recorded maximum increase in the last month. "Though the NCCF and NAFED started selling tomatoes at the discounted rate, the government is buying the produce at ₹ 110 or ₹ 120 per kg, so farmers will continue to get what they are getting now," Kale said.

Off-seasonal tomato cultivation peaks during monsoon in the hills when the crop is not harvesting in plains of north India. The state annually produces 320,700 tonnes of tomato and aims to increase its production by 498,000 tonnes. Agriculture Minister <keyword id="1150518" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="virender-kanwar" source="Orion">Virender Kanwar</keyword> told IANS for some farmers off-seasonal tomato cultivation is the main source of income. About 46 per cent of the state's total plantation is in Solan district with more than 90 per cent of the produce going to markets in neighbouring states mainly Delhi. The other tomato growing belts are Sirmaur (30 per cent) and Kullu (10 per cent), while the remaining is in Shimla, <keyword id="86092" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="mandi" source="Orion">Mandi</keyword> and Bilaspur districts. Most of the farmers prefer to sell their produce through local agriculture produce market committees, whileAAAAA some send directly to Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMCs) of other states. To promote its cultivation, the university is regularly organizing capacity building programmes, benefitting over 25,000 farmers. The Minister said the government is also extending irrigation facilities and promoting rainwater harvesting. For systematic diversification of crops, the Agriculture Department has chalked out a plan for the introduction of high-yielding hybrids of vegetables, popularization of a micro-irrigation system and protected cultivation. For improvement of quality, organic and natural farming is also being promoted across the state. Subsidy to the tune of 50 per cent is being provided to the farmers for diversification of cereal crops to vegetables under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, wherein the tomato crop cultivation is also being promoted, added Kanwar.
