At 8 pm on Thursday, two members of an organization called "Germany For Bernie" used the video conferencing software Zoom to train potential volunteers. They explained how to use the phone banking system and showed them the script they'd need to follow.The leaders performed several mock phone conversations with different types of voters ranging, including both supporters and critics of Sanders. In the 2016 presidential election campaign, Russia had - successfully - exerted massive influence to support then-candidate Donald Trump and to harm his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.And last month, federal authorities informed the Sanders campaign that the Russian government has attempted to interfere in the 2020 primaries to help Sanders win the Democratic nomination. But, in this case, experts say the foreign involvement on behalf of the Sanders campaign appears to be above board. Under <a href="https://www.fec.gov/updates/foreign-nationals/">US federal election law</a>, foreign entities and individuals aren't allowed to contribute funds in American elections. But foreign nationals are permitted to volunteer for a candidate or campaign, so long as they don't act in a managerial or decision-making role. "It's perfectly legal under US federal campaign finance law for foreign nationals to volunteer for candidates, so long as the volunteer isn't in a campaign decision-making role," Paul Ryan, a campaign finance expert at the nonpartisan watchdog group Common Cause, told Insider.The Sanders campaign, which didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, has run into issues with foreign supporters in the past. Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign was <a href="https://apnews.com/7f0eb6d21bed4054b0fb794d03365eb0">forced to pay a $14,500 fine</a> to the Federal Election Commission to settle a complaint after it accepted campaign help from members of the Australia Labor Party, which paid the volunteers' expenses and stipends. Because the Australian volunteers were compensated, their efforts to help Sanders were considered a violation of federal election law, which bars foreign nationals from giving anything of value to an American candidate or election. The Sanders campaign settled the complaint, didn't agree that it violated any laws, and said the campaign staffers managing volunteers didn't believe the Australians would be barred from helping because they were compensated. But Ciara Torres-Spelliscy, a professor at Stetson University College of Law, argued that the Trump campaign has not been held accountable for some of its alleged violations of campaign finance law during the 2016 race - potentially setting a new, more relaxed precedent for foreign influence in presidential races. She pointed to the Trump campaign's partnership with Cambridge Analytica, which <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/former-cambridge-analytica-workers-say-firm-sent-foreigners-to-advise-us-campaigns/2018/03/25/6a0d7d90-2fa2-11e8-911f-ca7f68bff0fc_story.html">reportedly</a> employed dozens of foreign nationals to work on its political efforts in the US. American climate activists are recruiting their German counterparts to save Bernie Sanders' candidacy

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A New Yorker was convicted on Tuesday of providing material support to the Islamic State in Syria.</li><li>He abandoned his family and job as a stockbroker in Brooklyn to go to Syria, per AP.</li></ul>A New York man was convicted on Tuesday of providing material support to the Islamic State group in Syria, resulting in the deaths of one or more people, the Depart of Justice said in <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-edny/pr/american-citizen-convicted-providing-material-support-isis-resulted-death">a press release.</a>Ruslan Maratovich Asainov spent approximately five years between December 2013 and March 2019 fighting on behalf of the Islamic State in Syria, later admitting to FBI agents that he took part in numerous battles, the DOJ said.He received military-type training on how to use machine guns, automatic rifles, and rocket-propelled grenades from the Islamic State, which violates federal law, and later volunteered to become a lethal sniper for the foreign terrorist organization, per the DOJ.According to the DOJ, Asainov converted to Islam in 2009. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Michael Sanders taught US history at two different charter schools around the start of the pandemic.</li><li>Although he enjoyed it, he didn't think the time teachers put in compared to their compensation.</li></ul>In his second year of teaching high school US history, Michael Sanders was still passionate about his job and the subject matter. But when he took a hard look at his finances, he realized over two-thirds of his take-home pay was going toward his rent — and it made him wonder what the next five years of his life could look like."If I stayed in the industry, not just that one school, or one system, but, if I stayed doing this, even if I hopped around, what realistically could I expect," Sanders, 27, said in an interview with Insider.He'd entered the teaching profession with no illusions about money. He figured it would be an opportunity to work and support himself, while staying involved in his favorite subject, but when it became harder to make ends meet, it pushed him to find other options.Sanders, who is now a CEO Action for Racial Equity Fellow at PricewaterhouseCoopers, a Big Four accounting firm, talked to Insider about his teaching experience and how he transitioned into his current role. <h2>The hours put in did not match the compensation</h2>After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2018, Sanders completed his master's degree at the University of Chicago, and planned to pursue a PhD to become a history professor. But during his master's work, he realized he didn't want to keep going for a doctorate. In 2019, he started teaching tenth grade US history at a charter school in Barnstable, Mass., which he enjoyed. However, he felt isolated in the town, and had to commute to have a social life. When the coronavirus pandemic started in March 2020, he moved back in with his parents in the suburbs of Washington, DC, and thought about moving to another school for his second year of teaching. The next school year, he moved to a larger charter school network in Austin, Texas, and taught AP US history to eleventh-graders. As a teacher during the height of the pandemic, Sanders said he and his colleagues felt pressure to not only teach, but also to be unofficial advisors and guidance counselors to students facing issues with remote learning and the pandemic.Some of his students dealt with food scarcity and finding child care for their own children or siblings, and some worked jobs to support families in addition to doing schoolwork. "I think every teacher that I knew personally during COVID was not prepared by any sort of training or educational theory that they had encountered previously to really navigate all the challenges that were magnified by the pandemic," Sanders said.The hours he and other teachers put in, compared to their compensation, wasn't sustainable, he said."It's not that I burned out or soured on the act of teaching itself," Sanders said. "Rather, I thought that it's really tough to be a teacher, especially during COVID."<h2>Teachers don't "only teach"</h2>Sanders started talking to friends from college and grad school who had jobs in the corporate world as well as a good work-life balance. He also used LinkedIn to connect with people at companies that interested him. When he made it to the interview round at companies he'd applied to, he connected with current employees which helped him get referrals.He eventually joined PwC as an experienced associate in June 2021 after the school year in Austin. He moved up to senior associate a year later, then started his current fellowship this past September where he works to address disparities impacting Black Americans, including closing the digital divide.Teachers who want to transition into the corporate world should have a resume that exhibits their teaching skills "in a way that is digestible to these corporate recruiters," he said, as well as network.Break the mindset that you've "only taught," said Sanders."No, you haven't just taught, you have managed stakeholder relationships with, oftentimes, 150-plus students. You've tracked deliverables in terms of their assignments, their different assessments, their homework, across a nine-month period."He added that teachers also chart students' growth and identify areas of strength and development — a skill that professional companies need and want.Even after leaving, Sanders said he still loves the teaching profession, and volunteers between five and 10 hours a week teaching English-as-a-second-language at a nonprofit in Austin. He still talks to some of his former students and teacher colleagues too."I think it was bittersweet," Sanders said about the transition. "I was really happy for new opportunities. I was sad to leave my students."

He asked to quit in October, and "despite his troops' patient exhortation, he persisted in dropping out" in November.According to the report, the new recruit was then hit with eight punishments ranging from a two-year ban on travel to more than $7,000 in fines and reimbursements. Here all eight of the punishments:<ul><li>A two-year ban on foreign and domestic travel, buying real estate, going to college, and starting a business.</li><li>A lifetime ban on working for the government, even as a temporary staffer. This is a big deal since China's communist government means that many jobs are government jobs.</li><li>His military status will be changed to "rejection of military service."</li><li>A $4,000 fine for leaving the military, in addition to paying back the government for the costs they incurred taking him on as a soldier and housing him, which amounts to $3,750.</li><li>A cancellation of his preferential treatment as a serviceman.</li><li>A public shaming via TV, newspaper, and social media reports.</li></ul><a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/15/asia/china-military-recruit-quit-intl-hnk-scli/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> reports that there have been a few dozen similar cases in recent years of soldiers in China being punished for leaving the military.It's an interesting system since China has an essentially volunteer force, according to CNN. Though the People's Liberation Army is technically compulsory, they get so many volunteers that they've had to get more discerning in recent years with who they take, focusing now on college-educated individuals.It's likely that Zhang was in basic training or recently graduated from it, showing the huge stakes for someone new to uniform. His fate is in stark contrast to that of US recruits, who can refuse to continue their basic training or fail physical tests and are likely to be processed out of the service without lasting repercussions.It's also important to note how the military publicized this story on their English-language news website.Adam Ni, a China researcher at the Department of Security Studies and Criminology at Macquarie University in Australia, told CNN that it appears the military is trying to "make an example out of" Zhang by making his punishments known to "broader society."Ni said "this is an example of some of the tensions that the PLA faces. If you leave the Chinese military, the government can make your life a living hell

If a foster parent needs to be away from a child, they should place that child in the care of another foster parent who was trained and licensed by the same agency, DeGarmo said."As a foster parent myself, I would not leave my teen in foster care with anybody," he said. "I would make sure that there's somebody who is prepared to care for these children who have issues of trust and issues in judgment."Children in foster care often arrive in the system with a history of trauma, and even those who don't have preexisting mental-health conditions are likely facing anxiety associated with being removed from their homes, DeGarmo said."Many of these kids have some serious behavior problems," said <a href="https://violenceinterventionprogram.org/about-vip/">Astrid Heppenstall Heger</a>, the executive director of the Violence Intervention Program, an organization that provides support services to at-risk children in Los Angeles.She added: "Leaving them alone is dangerous from a lot of perspectives since foster kids are the primary source for recruiting children to child prostitution and sexual exploitation. When DeGarmo saw the police body-camera <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-columbus-shooting-police-teenage-girl-makhia-bryant-2021-4">footage</a> of Bryant lunging at another person with a knife, he believed she was afraid of something."Her emotions overwhelmed her, and she doesn't know how to process those emotions," DeGarmo said. "This is what happens to many of these kids. They don't know how to process the emotions they're feeling, and so many of them don't get the professional therapy, the assistance they need."Alison Rodgers, a spokesperson for Franklin County Children Services - the agency that runs the foster program in Columbus - declined to say whether Moore continues to care for foster children after Bryant's death, citing confidentiality guidelines.Rodgers provided Insider with an internal policy for how the agency conducts an investigation following a death in foster care. Those guidelines don't indicate whether other children remain in a foster home while an investigation takes place."The nature and cause of death could be determining factors regarding the removal of a child," Rodgers said. He noted a spike in severe cases of <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2020/04/30/child-abuse-reports-coronavirus/">child abuse</a> and <a href="https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/04/30/coronavirus-pandemic-human-trafficking-crisis/">human trafficking</a>, and said that at the same time, many foster parents have given up because of the challenges of being at home around the clock with children who have special needs."The kids are not going to school, they're not getting the professional services they need, they're not getting the therapy, they're not getting the counseling, and they're not getting their one-on-one visitations with their parents," DeGarmo said. "And the anxiety levels of kids in foster care have gone through the roof during COVID."Shutdown orders have only added to the strain on the foster system, where even before the pandemic, many children weren't getting the resources they need to break a cycle of trauma, DeGarmo said."I will tell you this: Two of the three I've adopted are third-generation foster care, which means their parents and grandparents were also in the foster system, and they never got the help and support they needed," DeGarmo said. "So it's just cyclical."Heger agreed that US foster children - especially Black foster children - and their biological families aren't getting the mental-health and mentoring services they need."There are a lot of things in foster care that predispose a kid to be a victim of abuse and neglect and failure. And in the African American population, a great number of them end up in the legal system and ultimately in adult prison," Heger said. "So we are not paying a lot of attention to these kids right now."<div type="image" title="Ma'Khia Bryant" height="1080" width="1080" msid="82564262" hostid="261"></div>More than 15,000 children are clients of the Violence Intervention Program, Heger said. She is trying to launch a clinic in Los Angeles that would provide support services for at-risk youth, particularly those who are Black, with the goal of allowing children to stay with their biological families.The clinic would also provide a volunteer mentor to every child who checks in weekly to make sure they are happy, safe, and healthy. Heger said this kind of programming is an alternative to taking children away from their families and putting them in foster homes that aren't guaranteed to keep them safe."We can't just take these kids out and dump them in a foster home and then not support them," she said. "We know they're in foster care for a reason. They're there because they needed protection and we're not there to protect them."Heger said that while the No. 1 request she's gotten from the children she's worked with is for a mentor, the second most frequent request, often from young Black girls, is for a hair salon. She purchased a portable hair salon that she plans to staff with volunteers who are trained in styling Black hair for the young women in the Violence Intervention Program."It seems frivolous to some people, but it's just that it's about value, and it's about self-esteem and about knowing that you're important," she said.Torrence previously told Insider that it was her cousin's dream to graduate high school and go to a cosmetology school so she could one day open her own salon and eyelash studio. Bryant had shared videos online of her doing her hair and makeup."If Ma'Khia was in my clinic, I would have absolutely wanted to make certain that she was in a place where somebody honored that desire, that wish," Heger said. "And that if she was placed away from her mom, wherever she was placed, that she had a mentor that was willing to help her pursue that."

Trump's playbook for the 2020 election is starting to take shape - and it looks like a rerun of 2016, but even riskier

And when he <a href="https://twitter.com/TheDukeOfYork/status/1197213619152396288" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced he was stepping back</a> from public life last month, he said he would be "willing to help any appropriate law enforcement agency with their investigations, if required."But just how such a talk would go down remains up in the air. Insider spoke to three legal experts with experience in federal and sex abuse cases, who gave insight into the the likelihood of an Andrew interview, the conditions that could be set, and the possibility that he could become a target of the investigation.<h2>Prosecutors and investigators will likely want to talk to Prince Andrew</h2>MugshotJeffrey Epstein.Though Prince Andrew hasn't given too many details about what he witnessed during his friendship with Epstein - and he claims to have had no direct knowledge of illicit activities - investigators will still likely want to interview him, lawyer Dominique Penson told Insider.Penson - a partner at Barasch, McGarry, Salzman &amp; Penson - has represented sexual abuse victims in the past, in cases involving the Catholic Church and Jehovah's Witnesses."I'm sure they would be interested in talking to him, because he was apparently close to Epstein on a number of occasions, and then of course everybody now knows the allegations made by Ms. Giuffre," Penson said, referring to Virginia Giuffre (née Roberts), who said Epstein paid her to have sex with the prince when she was 17 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prince-andrew-jeffrey-epstein-virginia-giuffre-alibis-discredited-2019-11">(the prince has said he has no recollection of ever meeting Giuffre).</a>Penson added: "If true, he had a close inside look into Epstein's sex-trafficking operation."Since <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-conspiracy-theories-death-clinton-trump-2019-8">Epstein died in jail</a> before facing trial, justice for the <a href="https://www.thecut.com/2019/07/how-many-jeffrey-epstein-victims-are-there.html">dozens</a> of women who accused him of molesting, assaulting, or trafficking them has been in limbo. Prosecutors could turn their attention to Epstein's possible co-conspirators, which Giuffre has alleged includes Prince Andrew and <a href="https://www.insider.com/ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein-alleged-madame-2019-7">Ghislaine Maxwell</a>, Epstein's one-time girlfriend and alleged madame. <a href="http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Jeffrey-Epstein-Accusers/92beb8b6ed294710920af076092b30b4/2/0">Bebeto Matthews/AP</a>Virginia Roberts Giuffre is seen talking to reporters in August 2019.<h2>There's a good chance an interview could happen because of the public scrutiny against the prince</h2>Juliet Sorensen, a former federal prosecutor who now teaches public corruption and criminal law at Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law, told Insider there's a good chance that Prince Andrew will speak to US investigators so that he can repair his tarnished reputation.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/newspaper-front-pages-prince-andrew-jeffrey-epstein-interview-2019-11">The media's reaction</a> to Andrew's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKQi3wzNFGQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC</a> interview about his relationship with Epstein was widely panned, with many criticizing the prince for failing to show regret about the friendship or sympathy for the victims. Shortly after the interview, he announced that he would be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-prince-andrew-interview-about-epstein-connection-bbc-2019-11">taking a step back from public duties.</a>Speaking to investigators could be a step toward changing the public perception of him and returning to royal work.When asked whether it was likely that Andrew would agree to speak to US officials, or if he was just trying to get brownie points by offering, Sorensen said "it's probably both.""That is to say, he's probably received the advice that it's going to make him look better if he agreed to speak. If prosecutors were proactive, they could file a request through The Hague, compelling Andrew to testify in the case.The same goes for Epstein's victims - if they want Andrew's testimony badly enough or named him as a defendant, he could be compelled to testify.Faced with the possibility that he could be forced to talk anyway, his recent offers to talk may have just been a move to get him some good PR, Penson said."If I were his lawyer and I thought, 'Gee, if they want it badly, they're telling me they're going to go through The Hague,' and I thought they're going to get it. Ultimately, it's up to a British judge whether to sign off on the extradition order, have the suspect arrested, and sent to the US.But Sorensen says it's unlikely that American investigators would ever demand the prince's extradition because it could harm diplomatic relations between the two countries."I think that's totally unlikely because the US has other fish to fry, and has intimate relations with the United Kingdom that arresting a member of the royal family would jeopardize," Sorensen said.<a href="http://www.apimages.com/metadata/Index/Britain-Prince-Andrew/36843f0352c746d2bd988829bedf48e7/26/0">AP</a>A collection of British newspapers are seen the day after Prince Andrew decided to step away from public life, in the wake of his disastrous interview.The fact that Andrew is a prince also means that decisions about his involvement in the case will be decided at the highest levels in the Department of Justice, University of Chicago law professor Sharon Fairley said."There's going to be a whole heck of a lot of scrutiny and hoops that are going to be jumped through to compel him to testify or charge him, if that is even possible under international law," Fairley, a former federal prosecutor, told Insider.She continued: "Certainly those decisions are going to be made by the highest levels at the Department of Justice because of the political implications. That's a pretty serious matter when you're bringing in someone of that stature. I imagine that's going to be really discussed all the way up to the top."<h2>Prosecutors would only offer immunity if they knew Andrew has valuable information</h2>Prosecutors only give out immunity when they know that a witness has information that they won't be able to win their trial without, Fairley said."I think that's what prosecutors are probably trying to figure out right now - what information he could potentially have that would inform their case," she said.Even if they decide to offer immunity, Fairley said full immunity is rare.<a href="https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/news-photo/melania-trump-prince-andrew-gwendolyn-beck-and-jeffrey-news-photo/1192977806?adppopup=true">Davidoff Studios/Getty Images</a>Prince Andrew (second left) and Epstein (right) share a laugh at Mar-a-Lago in 2000, with Melania Trump on the far left."Sometimes what you'll have is what's called a 'proffer discussion.' And that's where anything that a witness says in the context of a proffer interview cannot be used against them in a criminal trial," Fairley said, adding that what they say must be truthful in order to count.Interestingly, this tactic is also called getting to be "<a href="https://www.wisenberglaw.com/Articles/Queen-For-A-Day-The-Dangerous-Game-of-Proffers-Proffer-Agreements-and-Proffer-Letters.shtml">Queen for a day</a>."(Fairley said it's important to note that the government can still use the information that they get in a proffer interview to develop leads in a case that could potentially uncover other evidence that might be used against the witness.)Penson said prosecutors could also offer to keep Andrew's testimony under seal, or protect him from being served with a lawsuit if he comes to the US for the talk.The former is less likely though, due to the public interest in the case, Penson said.<h2>Prince Andrew's woes are likely more about his image than legal concerns</h2>Prince Andrew's connection to the Epstein affair is Giuffre's allegation that Epstein paid her to sleep with the prince twice, when she was a minor (again, <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-andrew-suggests-virginia-roberts-epstein-photo-is-fake-2019-11">Andrew denies having met her</a>).Florida Southern District CourtPrince Andrew and Virginia Roberts Giuffre, along with Ghislaine Maxwell. This photo was included in an affidavit in which Giuffre alleged Prince Andrew directed her to have sex with him.Though Giuffre alleges that sex acts with Andrew date back to 2001, there is no statute of limitations on the federal level when it comes to participating in the sex trafficking of a minor, so Andrew could technically still be charged if investigators find evidence to back up her claim.But the language of the law provides him an out. The law says it's a federal offense "to knowingly recruit, entice, harbor, transport, provide, obtain, or maintain a minor (defined as someone under 18 years of age) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that the victim is a minor and would be caused in engage in a commercial sex act."In other words, if Andrew can prove he didn't know Epstein was paying Giuffre to sleep with him (if her allegation as such is true), then he wouldn't be guilty of sex trafficking.But there are still a lot of unknowns in the case. A 747 aircraft emits more than 21 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per mile traveled.So Thunberg put a call out on Twitter in search of a solution to this ethical quandary.Herrmann had seen Thunberg speak at a "Fridays for Future" demonstration in Hamburg, Germany, and he offered his team's sailing services."Greta was thankful, polite, humble, very informed, and asked a lot of detailed questions about safety," Herrmann told Business Insider. A 38-year-old professional sailor, Herrmann has raced across the Atlantic and sailed around the world multiple times. Thunberg, on the other hand, has little sailing experience, so Herrmann said the trip will require mental preparation on her part. The journey will involve two weeks of potentially rough seas and cramped quarters."I'm very impressed by her courage to try it out and her ability to accept the lack of comfort that goes with traveling without emissions," he said.<h2>What Thunberg's 3,000-mile journey will be like</h2>Thunberg and Herrmann's 3,000-mile journey will start in the southeastern UK and terminate in New York. (Thunberg will likely take the train to the UK from her home in Stockholm.) The group will dine on on freeze-dried or vacuum-packed meals.Herrmann's team isn't charging Thunberg for this journey, and he said he even cancelled two big practice sessions for the opportunity to sail her. "I'm happy about Greta's youth movement," he said. "They're much more realistic about the [climate] problem, and concerned as a generation as much as the older generation should be, but isn't." Thunberg, for her part, took a sabbatical year from school to attend the UN events and travel around the Americas in between.<h2>The Malizia</h2>The Malizia, <a href="https://team-malizia.com/en/boat/">which means "the wily one"</a> in the Monegasque language, is 60 feet long and 20 feet wide. The sailboat relies on 8 square-meters of solar paneling that cover its deck for power during the day, and turbines at night. (It has motors and generators onboard in the case of emergency.)Casiraghi <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/29/climate/greta-thunberg-sailing-climate-summit.html">told the New York Times</a> that only a handful of zero-emissions vessels like Malizia II exist. Herrmann said he and Casiraghi will handle all sailing duties on the 8-ton racing boat and keep an eye out for hurricanes as well (that risk is why the group is sailing north)."I am conscious about Pierre's and my responsibility. But his vast fandom on social media didn't translate to primary victory, and the Democratic Socialist announced he was suspending his campaign on Wednesday, leaving former Vice President Joe Biden as the only viable Democratic candidate. Despite having two unsuccessful presidential bids, Sanders' ideas and momentum, particularly among Gen Z and millennials, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-influence-on-us-politics-historic-despite-failed-campaigns-2020-4">influenced the Democratic Party</a> as a whole. Setting a new tone for progressive politics, the Vermont senator gave ideas like a Green New Deal, Medicare for All, and tuition-free college <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-influence-on-us-politics-historic-despite-failed-campaigns-2020-4">more name recognition</a> and support - or, as his young fans would call it, clout. The 78-year-old couldn't identify what an app was when <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/01/13/opinion/bernie-sanders-nytimes-interview.html">The New York Times asked him</a> about his own technological preferences, but compared to every other presidential candidate over the past five years, he had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-democratic-frontrunner-memes-meme-economy-once-again-asking-2020-2">the biggest online following</a>, or fandom - besides President Donald Trump.The sway the two candidates have had in meme culture and on platforms like TikTok and Reddit <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-democratic-frontrunner-memes-meme-economy-once-again-asking-2020-2">are comparable</a>, and Trump's online meme-makers and defenders <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-democratic-frontrunner-memes-meme-economy-once-again-asking-2020-2">definitively had a role</a> in electing him president.It's unclear what internet-driven Trump supporters would have done had he not won the 2016 election, but the leaders of online Sanders communities like "<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/">r/SandersForPresident</a>" have a plan to mobilize the people behind the 50 million pageviews their forum got just last month, even if the candidate they fought for isn't in the race any longer. "Basically, we're going to focus on down ballot races, not the presidential race, and progressive policies-slash-ideas. We're gonna use what media power we have to guide the subreddit in that direction," Kevin Moore, director of operations for the "r/SandersForPresident" moderating team and previously a top Reddit social media manager, told Business Insider. "We've probably talked about that even like six months ago. You don't project that to the community like 'Hey, we're thinking about doing this,' because it's like a loser mentality. But that's been the plan for quite some time."<h2>Sanders supporters are disproportionately represented on Reddit, where socialist communities are now pivoting down-ticket</h2>Reddit is the 19th-most visited website on the internet as of August 2019, according to <a href="https://www.alexa.com/topsites">a report</a> created by Amazon. Twitter, in comparison, is the 38th-most visited website. Reddit's users are <a href="https://www.techjunkie.com/demographics-reddit/">two-thirds male</a> and two-thirds under the age of 29, with more than half being US citizens. Overwhelmingly, its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-democratic-frontrunner-memes-meme-economy-once-again-asking-2020-2">users favor</a> either Sanders or Trump, based on the size of the dominant subreddits for each 2020 presidential candidate.On "<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SandersForPresident/">r/SandersForPresident</a>," the largest Sanders subreddit, more than 510,000 users are subscribed to the forum's feed. According to Moore, the actual reach of the subreddit is much larger, with 6 million monthly active users. Besides just hosting dicussion about Sanders-related news, campaigning, and Democratic Socialist ideas in general, it was also a major fundraising platform for the candidate and it actively recruited members to volunteer for Sanders' campaign. Moore, who often spends up to five or six hours a day moderating, says based on his usual social media consulting fees, he gave $200,000 of his labor to the Sanders campaign via the subreddit. "Bernie obviously has a great deal of appeal to younger people, and Reddit has a user base that skews younger than, like, Facebook, per say," Moore said. "Combined with how Reddit works in general, it's easy for regular people like me or you to have a voice there. Quite frankly, the working class is on there."The day that Sanders suspended his campaign, Reddit's unofficial drama historian, "<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/fx9xt4/sanders_drops_out_reddit_reacts/">r/SubredditDrama</a>," cataloged how the platform reacted to the news as a whole. Both "r/SandersForPresident" and the second-largest Sanders subreddit, "r/OurPresident," briefly suspended posting and locked comment sections under announcement posts. In terms of immediate reactions, megathreads on non-specific political forums like "r/politics" <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/fx8hga/megathread_bernie_sanders_ends_2020_democratic/?sort=controversial">devolved into controversy</a> over whether Sanders supporters were going to rally behind Biden or not. But the moderators of "r/SandersForPresident" had planned to cast a wider net than just the 2020 presidential election for months, Moore told Business Insider, and the group is refocusing its efforts on down-ticket races for Democratic socialist candidates. It may even start a PAC, although "that is currently in the 'idea' phase.""In my experience, what happens when you have a community large enough and have enough passion, which we undoubtedly have, is that they will in turn organize themselves and new behavior will emerge," Moore said. "Our job as moderators is to feed into the emergent behavior and help create structure that generates more of it. No doubt, it's not a happy day, but I'm not particularly worried about the subreddit or the progressive movement in general."<h2>Many TikTok users can't vote yet, but the Gen Z-favored app was full of Sanders support that's now dwindling without his candidacy</h2>While Redditors overwhelmingly favored Sanders among Democratic candidates, Reddit is far more skewed to a subset of the American population that's white and male than other social media platforms where pro-Sanders sentiment took hold. One of those is TikTok, and while the short-form video platform is stereotyped as a place for teenagers and children, it's <a href="https://www.omnicoreagency.com/tiktok-statistics/">biggest age demographic</a> straddles the voting age, with 46% of its users falling between ages 16 and 24.It's also, similar to Reddit, less engineered to serve you content that your friends suggest, via resharing tools. TikTok uses a complex algorithm to serve up a never-ending stream of videos tailored to your interests, including political bias, based on what types of videos you interact with the most. The number of Sanders supporters on TikTok is less quantifiable than Reddit, but popular trends like "<a href="https://www.papermag.com/barbz-on-tiktok-against-conservatives-2645584173.html?rebelltitem=13#rebelltitem13">#barbzforbernie</a>" and memes like Twitch streamer Neekolul's <a href="https://kotaku.com/ok-boomer-girls-rise-to-twitch-fame-was-a-perfect-stor-1842634154">"ok, boomer" TikTok</a> - which features her wearing a "Bernie" t-shirt and using the hashtag "#bernie2020" - reflect a pro-meme, pro-Sanders environment on the app.The "#barbzforbernie" creator, who pushed dual support for <a href="https://www.papermag.com/barbz-on-tiktok-against-conservatives-2645584173.html?rebelltitem=13#rebelltitem13">both Nicki Minaj and Sanders</a>, made a TikTok in the wake of the Sanders' campaign. In TikTok meme fashion, it features his heartbroken expression juxtaposed over a screenshot of the Twitter Moment announcing the campaign's suspension, while "Pills N Potions" by Minaj plays."Bernie ended his campaign but that doesn't mean #barbzforbernie will ever stop supporting him, we all love you @bernie," the caption reads. But it's hard to imagine that viral figures who devoted their TikTok presences to Sanders have the pivot-potential like"r/SandersForPresident" to turn their prominence into a different type of political movement.TikTok barely has the infrastructure to promote a legible conversation between users, opting instead for an environment focused on virality and self-expression over anything else, and most users on the platform have become adept at creating content catering to that mindset. Neekolul, for example, drew over 30 million views to her Sanders promotion, but in an interview with Kotaku, <a href="https://kotaku.com/ok-boomer-girls-rise-to-twitch-fame-was-a-perfect-stor-1842634154">which profiled</a> her rise to Twitch fame, she focused more on how that viral moment built her own brand, rather than made her into a Sanders-driven or socialist campaigner. "He's without a doubt motivated new generations of voters, and I think the covid-19 situation has definitely helped drive home the importance of his Medicare for All platform. It's a sad time for a lot of us supporters, but I think there's still hope for many of us who are younger to make a change with future elections," she wrote in <a href="https://kotaku.com/ok-boomer-girls-rise-to-twitch-fame-was-a-perfect-stor-1842634154">an email to Kotaku</a> after Sanders announced his campaign's suspension. There are dedicated socialist corners on TikTok, though, and some of them are already pushing the conversation forward. 26-year-old Democratic Socialist <a href="https://www.insider.com/joshua-collins-democratic-socialist-is-washingtons-tiktok-candidate-2020-1">congressional candidate Joshua Collins</a> has a dedicated pro-Sanders TikTok presence, and he's already posted videos asking his followers whether they'll vote for Biden. "So people wanna know how I feel about Bernie Sanders dropping out," he said in another TikTok. "The short answer? Unsurprised. People were risking their lives to go out and vote for this man. He couldn't have that on his conscience."Collins, unlike Sanders, is a young candidate who <a href="https://www.insider.com/joshua-collins-democratic-socialist-is-washingtons-tiktok-candidate-2020-1">actually uses the platforms</a>, where Democratic Socialism is popular, to campaign for himself. He's the kind of future down-ticket candidate that "r/SandersForPresident" might decide to endorse in the coming days and weeks. He's also not nearly as popular on TikTok as people like Neekolul, but his ideal target audience is <a href="https://www.insider.com/joshua-collins-democratic-socialist-is-washingtons-tiktok-candidate-2020-1">Washington state's 10th district</a>, as opposed to Twitch's global audience. "The Democratic Party basically held his supporters and their families and their communities hostage, and rather than let his supporters continue contracting coronavirus just to vote for him, he dropped out," Collins continued on to say in his TikTok. "Do I think it was the right move? I don't know. Does it f---ing suck? Yeah. Am I dropping out?
