New Delhi, Apr 1 () Supplies in the country could be impacted due to challenges being faced by truck drivers amid the Covid-19 pandemic, transporters' body AIMTC said on Wednesday, as it sought government intervention for stranded drivers. The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) is the apex umbrella body of transporters representing about 93 lakh truckers pan-India. "Proper movement of vehicles, carrying essential or non-essential goods, is not possible under the challenges like ...cases of arrest of persons providing food to stranded drivers," AIMTC said in a statement. "AIMTC Research Unit (ARU), after talking to cross-section of transport fraternity on pan India basis came to the conclusion that there are many challenges before the transport fraternity and operations are not feasible under present circumstances," it said. There is no clear policy whether to run vehicles or not, especially those loaded with non-essential goods, AIMTC President Kultaran Singh Atwal said. "High-handedness by the personnel manning the checkposts / nakas and in some cases leading to harassment, extortion and beating of drivers, creating panic among them, is the big roadblock," he added. Even if the vehicle is made to move across a check-post or naka by talking to senior officials, it get stuck at some other place, he said, adding either the directions or updated guidelines from the top are not percolating down to the personnel on the ground or they are being wilfully ignored. Stressing that there is an urgent need for a holistic revision of policies to streamline the system, AIMTC said transportation services cannot work in isolation without manpower or infrastructure and lack of sensitivity of officials at the ground level. "It must be appreciated that the drivers are mainstay of the Transport Sector which is backbone of our economy and lifeline of the nation. They must be treated with sensitivity as they are also doing public service risking their lives under extreme circumstances like our doctors and health care workers," it said. To restore confidence among the 'heroes' of the transport trade -- the drivers -- and to bring them back, Rs 50 lakh insurance cover must also be extended to them as has been done for doctors and paramedics, it said. Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training (IFTRT) official SP Singh said a large number of truck drivers do not have social security net as they are not employed by the companies. Last week, AIMTC had cautioned that panic among stranded truckers at various places without proper provisions could escalate the problem of drivers' shortages and cripple the supply chain. AIMTC seeks govt intervention for food, safety for stranded truck drivers

New Delhi, Apr 1 () Only 5 per cent of around 90 lakh trucks across India are plying on the roads at the moment due to shortage of drivers and labourers at loading and unloading points following the nationwide lockdown, thereby severely hampering transportation of goods, according to truckers body AIMTC. The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) said even after the notification by Union Home Ministry on Sunday allowing movement of non-essential goods during the lockdown, things have not changed at the ground level as many drivers have either abandoned trucks and went to native places, or have moved to stay put at places where basic amenities like food and shelter are available. "There are around 90 lakh commercial vehicles that we represent all across the country with 3,500 state, district and taluka level bodies affiliated with us... What we feel is that only around 5 per cent of them are operating now. These are mainly LPG and other petroleum products carriers and short distance milk tankers," AIMTC Chairman Core Committee and former president Bal Malkit Singh told . He further said vegetable and fruits that are available in the market now transported by farmers through their own means. Singh said before the nationwide lockdown was announced on March 24, there was already partial lockdown as some states have already sealed borders and lakhs of trucks were stranded. "When lockdown was announced, there was a panic situation among drivers fraternity across the country. As a result many drivers abandoned vehicles and went to their native places. Some headed to safer places where basic amenities like food and shelter are available and they don't want to come on the highways at the moment as there are no 'dhabas' or eateries available now," he said. Apart from driver issues, Singh said labour availability is also a big challenge that is also hampering logistics operations in the country. "Truck owners are at home, offices are closed, staff are at home, garages are closed and labourers are not available at loading and unloading points," he said. Singh further said, "in the logistics supply chain, huge manpower is involved. At loading point you need supervisor who would do documentation but with no public transportation available he can't go to loading points at the moment." Besides, he said,"There is also a huge fear factor as staff are unwilling to come out due to coronavirus, and the same is also with drivers." "We have suggested that people who are involved in supply chain must also be given the Rs 50 lakh insurance cover that government has announced for frontline health workers during these trying circumstances. If that happens it can be an incentive for them to come out," Singh said. Moreover, trucks should also be sanitised at every 200 kilomtres and drivers health checked before entering from one state border to another, he added. When asked if things could improve with government interventions, like the home ministry order allowing movement of non-essential goods, he said, "we will have to wait and watch, but the fact is drivers are also human and they are fearful of coronavirus outbreak."  At such a crucial juncture, the apex body of passenger and cargo transport, <keyword id="6379446" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="All-India-Motor-Transport-Congress">All India Motor Transport Congress</keyword> (<keyword id="244580" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIMTC">AIMTC</keyword>) has said that the financial crunch has badly hit the transport sector . AIMTC covers up to 3,500 taluka, districts and state level federations and transport associations. 
 "AIMTC submits that the limit of Rs 10,000 withdrawal per day and maximum of Rs 20,000 per week is minuscule and has paralysed the transport business which is poised to come to a standstill," the apex body of cargo and passenger transporters told <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword>. 
 
“Our industry is mostly cash driven. Almost 80% of transactions are done through cash,” the spokesperson added. 
 This move has posed as a hurdle in their day-to-day operations. The spokesperson also defended his demand saying CNG gas stations across <keyword id="674224" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-NCR">Delhi NCR</keyword> only accept cash. And as per government’s directive, commercial vehicles need to ply on CNG. 
 
Rs 1,194 crore is required on a daily basis by the transport sector for its operations. A small operator having 10 trucks would require up to Rs 3 lakh and 50 thousand every day. As per the finance act section - 6D(d) of IT Act – Rs 35,000 per truck per trip is allowed for en route expenses. 
 
The badly timed demonetization comes at a time when nearly 2 lakh trucks that are 15 years old would be scrapped out of road today. This means the daily supply of milk, food items, vegetables, medicines will be badly hit. The traders aren’t very sure if this sudden stop in supply would lead to price rise and inflation. 
 
Most traders associated with local markets dealing in perishable food items told Business Insider that their daily sale has dipped from 25% to 50%. With online groceries making full use of the situation, their fixed customers are buying in credit. With the money flow in the market having gone down, it’s turning to be a disaster.

New Delhi, Mar 28 () Amid reports of thousands of drivers carrying non-essential goods stuck at different parts during the lockdown, All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has made a distress call to the government to ensure that its drivers reach home.AIMTC is the apex body of transporters representing about 93 lakh truckers across the nation."We have been receiving consistent distress calls from the drivers who are stranded and stuck on the highways, away from their homes without food, water and money. Thousands of drivers are living in pathetic conditions on the roads, with no basic amenities or food at any dhabas and this is a major problem," AIMTC said in a statement.AIMTC President Kultaran Singh Atwal said: "We have written to the Government to allow them to return home. There is a grave humanitarian crisis in the making unless prudent steps are taken to allow the stranded trucks to reach their destination."The body said "callous" approach is going to snap the supply chain of essential commodities as the vehicles carrying essential goods have also got stuck up while returning empty or with non-essential return load.With no relief coming on the ground for the helpless drivers AIMTC has taken initiatives on pan India basis to coordinate help and provide them food wherever possible, but there are many pockets which are not reachable due to lockdown and the situation is fast getting out of control, the organisation said."We have approached, represented and spoken time and again to the Government to allow good vehicles in transit to reach their destination after the screening of drivers and sanitization of vehicles. "We expect immediate circular from the Government to allow trucks, either empty or with non-essential goods to reach their destination/home state without any hassles. as the drivers are getting restless and may abandon the vehicles on the highways," the body said.Meanwhile, express logistics service providers said it will take time to regularise the cargo services.Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training ( IFTRT ) on the other hand has demanded issuance of order by the Home Ministry for off-loading of trucks by factories and warehouse owners as hapless good carriers are stranded.The 21-day lockdown has been imposed in the country from Tuesday amid coronavirus outbreak. Transporters body urges govt to rescue stranded drivers

New Delhi, Apr 3 () Supply chain optimisation platform Locus on Friday said it has launched a "Driver Seva Mobile App" to help drivers stranded during the lockdown on account of coronavirus outbreak. The app has been supported by Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), an apex body of transporters that has been raising the issue of stranded drivers. "Locus, a global B2B SaaS company that automates human decisions in supply chain, has initiated the 'Driver Seva Mobile App' project along with Highway Delite, a travel app startup, to do its bit in easing the situation for the truck drivers who are stuck on highways due to the lockdown," the company said in a statement. It said the project is supported by the Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd, in association with the AIMTC. The country-wide lockdown in India has had an impact across industries, but at the heart of it all is logistics and supply chain, it said adding drivers, who are the lifeline of this industry, have been deeply affected right now. A sizable population of drivers have nowhere to go to and not many resources to survive with, the statement said. This app aims to help drivers in the current lockdown with information regarding food, water, and safe parking near their location, across the country, it said. "Highway Delite has added more than 400 BPCL Pumps (140 BPCL Company owned pumps), 6 APML Hubs, and 30+ dhabas. The Highway Delite team is working to increase this count to 1000+ within 4 days by listing more pumps and dhabas, where food facilities will be available to drivers," said Rajesh Kumar G, Founder, Highway Delite. "We heard from a lot of clients about their drivers being stranded on highways with nowhere to go and bleak availability of essentials like water and food. We immediately got into the act and reached out to Highway Delite to set this up. Once again, I am glad that technology is acting as an enabler in these uncertain times. The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), the apex body of truckers representing around 93 lakh truckers, has been seeking government intervention for its drivers stranded at various places during the nationwide coronavirus lockdown. "NHAI is making all efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The highways authority has made arrangements for food and water at toll plazas across the country for the drivers of goods carriers as the restaurants and eateries along highways are temporarily closed following the 21-day nationwide lockdown," it said in a statement. This arrangement has been made to ensure that they are looked after well as they carry goods and services for people across the country. "NHAI believes that truck drivers are truly the lifeline of our country. It is imperative that transportation of goods happens freely on the highways for the welfare of society at large. In the current circumstances, when the truck drivers are executing their duties with utmost sincerity, the NHAI acknowledges their efforts and is committed to extend support to them in every possible way," the statement said.
