New Delhi, Jun 5 () A 22-year-old man allegedly committed suicide at AIIMS here on Friday by hanging himself from the grill of a staircase, police said. The man has been identified as Bittu Kumar Tiwari, a resident of Gopalganj in Bihar, they said. At 6.16 am police received information about the suicide in the emergency ward of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a senior police officer said. Tiwari committed suicide by hanging himself from the grill of a staircase on the second floor, the police said. "Tiwari was admitted to AIIMS on May 25 for treatment of blood clotting," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said. The reason behind his extreme step has not yet been ascertained. Tiwari's mother and sister are already in the hospital. The body will be handed over to his family after the autopsy, the police said. Sources said that the recruitment and clinical trials of the children aged 6-12 years will start from Tuesday. The trial on children aged 6-12 has already started at AIIMS Patna. Participants would be given the vaccine after their screening report comes. The trial would ensure if the Bharat Biotech jab is suitable for children. Delhi AIIMS has decided to start the trial drive after the recruitment and <keyword id="122283" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Clinical-trial">clinical trial</keyword> for single-dose Covaxin for 12-18 age group is over. After the recruitment of 6-12 year-old children, AIIMS Delhi will be conducting trials for the age group 2-6 years of children. The trials are taking place at 525 centres. AIIMS Delhi to start clinical trial of Covaxin on children aged 6-12 years from Tuesday

New Delhi, Jul 10 () A 25-year-old junior resident doctor at AIIMS here died on Friday after he jumped from the tenth floor of a hostel, police said. The victim has been identified as Anurag. He was a junior resident doctor at the Department of Psychiatry, they said. He used to live in the doctors' hostel and allegedly jumped from its tenth floor around 5 pm, a senior police officer said. "He was shifted to the AIIMS casualty where he succumbed to his injuries. Inquest proceedings have been initiated," Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Atul Kumar Thakur said. AIIMS Delhi junior doctor jumps off 10th floor of hostel, dies

New Delhi, Apr 20 () The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Monday issued notices to the AIIMS administration and the Delhi Police in connection with the alleged suicide attempt by a woman doctor at the premier healthcare institute here apparently over caste and gender based discrimination and harassment. The woman doctor attempted suicide on Friday, one of her colleagues at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here said. In the notice issued to Delhi Police, the DCW sought a copy of the FIR registered in the matter, status report on investigation and asked whether the accused have been arrested till now. The panel has sought details about proposed timeline for completion of investigation and has sought the police''s reply by April 25. In the notice issued to AIIMS, the panel asked for copies of all complaints received from the woman doctor till date and action taken report on each. It also asked whether the matter was dealt with by the Internal Complaints Committee and details of the action taken against the accused faculty member. The panel also asked for details of steps taken to assist the victim in seeking legal remedies in the matter and sought the reply by April 25. "It is critical that exemplary action is taken against the perpetrators of caste and gender based violence. The Commission has instituted an inquiry into the matter," the notice said. The National Commission for Women (NCW) had written to the Union Health Ministry asking it to conduct an immediate inquiry in the matter. The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of AIIMS had written to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday about the administration's "inaction" on the alleged harassment of the resident doctor on the basis of caste and gender by the faculty at the premier hospital. The victim, identified as Anurag Kumar, was battling depression for over eight months. He used to live in the doctors' hostel and allegedly jumped from its tenth floor around 5 pm, a senior police officer said. "He was shifted to the AIIMS casualty where he succumbed to injuries. Inquest proceedings have been initiated," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Atul Kumar Thakur said. Anurag Kumar had shared his struggle with depression on his blog on June 21 and said in February, he started feeling suicidal and began looking for options to end his life. He was diagnosed with severe depressive episode. The blog was also shared by Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Twitter. Vardhan also expressed anguish over the death of Kumar. "Shocked &amp; distressed to hear of the painful death of young &amp; most brilliant Dr Anurag Kumar, Junior Resident at AIIMS Delhi He was under treatment for severe depression for sometime now &amp; took away his own life. "My heart bleeds for his family. Condolences to them &amp; his colleagues. Swept by tears as I read young Dr Anurag Kumar's blog sent to me by a doctor friend. I feel very strongly. This self-annihilation must be stopped at any cost! Rest in Peace My Son!" Vardhan tweeted. From jumping from the tenth floor of his hostel to hanging himself, Kumar weighed all options. "Finally I stumbled across a website that was providing bulk quantity poison and alas! I paid my hard earned internship money to them," he said in his blog. When a friend-cum-colleague came to know about it, Kumar was immediately admitted to the same ward where he was working. He was kept in an isolation ward and was discharged in a week. "Initial few days were good, but I again deteriorated and bought shaving blades to cut my carotid on March 2 when I was admitted again only to be discharged 45 days later in April," he said. This time, he stayed for a few days in general bed before being shifted to isolation room. This enabled him to get a broader perspective of life in a psychiatry ward, Kumar wrote on his blog. He, was however, discharged upon which he distributed chocolates in the ward and resumed his duty the next day. "Although I missed multiple academic activities and OPDs, I am sure that my experience in ward will help me become a better psychiatrist," he said. AIIMS Resident Doctors Association (RDA) Adarsh Pratap Singh said Kumar was suffering from mental illness and was on medication. "Mental health is of utmost important in this era of cut-throat competition and the ongoing and everlasting race for success. Social stigma related to mental health must be discouraged in this modern world, since it its treatable and the associated grievous consequences are preventable," Singh said in a statement. On Monday, a 37-year-old journalist undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at the AIIMS Trauma Centre had also died after allegedly jumping off the fourth floor of the hospital building. An AIIMS probe into the alleged suicide by the journalist did not find any mala fide intent behind his death or any lapses in the treatment protocol, Union Minister Vardhan said on Friday. NIT CK

New Delhi, May 29 () The Delhi High Court has said there appeared to be a lack of communication between the AAP government and AIIMS which led to several patients who tested positive for COVID-19 being shifted to other hospitals instead of the dedicated COVID-19 facility at AIIMS. The high court noted that these were out-station patients who had come to AIIMS for treatment of non-COVID ailments and later tested positive for coronavirus while residing in the night shelter within the hospital campus. A bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Rajnish Bhatnagar directed both All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Delhi government to appoint their respective nodal officers and any communication between the two related to COVID-19 patients be addressed to the nodal officer of the other party. "It appears to us that there is lack of communication protocol between AIIMS and Delhi government," the bench said. The direction was issued after 20 patients, being treated at AIIMS for non-COVID ailments, were transferred to Delhi government hospitals after they tested positive for coronavirus. On this aspect, Delhi government standing counsel Rahul Mehra alleged in the high court that AIIMS was not accessible for common man and that the hospital was turning away COVID-19 patients, unless they were well connected and influential. Delhi government, in its affidavit, said that the persons who were found COVID positive were admitted to its hospitals and not at AIIMS, for the reason that the decision to shift them to a hospital had been taken in the night, and at that hour, the authorities at AIIMS were not available. The contentions were disputed by AIIMS which said that it admits any person who reports at the emergency, and is found COVID positive and requires hospitalisation instead of home quarantine. The hospital also said that nobody from Delhi government contacted any officer of AIIMS with regard to the 20 patients. It also said that these patients could have reported at the emergency (which they did not) and, thereafter, they would have been admitted to one of the AIIMS facilities if they were found COVID-19 positive, depending on their condition. The direction by the bench came while hearing two PILs seeking to address the grievance of about hundred out-station patients and their attendants, residing in night shelters here, who were earlier being provided treatment for several ailments at the AIIMS which allegedly stopped treating them after COVID-19 outbreak. Another issue the high court took note of was regarding testing of the out-station patients, receiving treatment at AIIMS for non-COVID ailments and residing at night shelters inside and near the hospital. The bench was concerned how the mother of one patient, residing in the night shelter within AIIMS, was allowed to go back home without testing for coronavirus while her son's test report was awaited. The high court also noted that another patient residing in the same shelter was not quarantined despite testing positive for COVID-19 which led to spread of the infection to amongst many other inmates of the night shelter. "This aspect raises a serious concern, " the bench said and asked Rachna Malik, a social worker and one of the petitioners, to file an affidavit giving particulars of when the two patients were tested, when their test reports of COVID-19 as positive were received and when the mother of one of them left and when these two persons were quarantined. The bench took note of another issue that only 51 of the inmates of the night shelter were tested for coronavirus, even though there were in excess of 90 persons residing in the night shelter, where the other two patients were living. "We had asked the respondents (AIIMS and Delhi government) to provide justification for the same. It has come out from the status report and the documents placed on record, that the said 51 persons were the patients who were undergoing treatment at AIIMS. It appears that only the patients were tested, and not their attendees," the bench noted. The bench said the "failure to test all the occupants of the night shelter, who were more than 90 in number, may have led to a further outbreak of the viral disease amongst many other persons with whom they may have come in contact". It directed AIIMS and Delhi government to "ensure that all such occupants of the night shelter, who are found COVID-19 positive, are quarantined so that they do not infect others, who may have not got the infection yet". "We direct the Health department of the Delhi government to look into this aspect so that such like situations do not recur in future," the bench said and listed the matter for further hearing on June 10. By Payal Banerjee New Delhi, Apr 8 () Around 30 healthcare workers including doctors, nurses and technicians at the Cardio-Neuro Centre in AIIMS here have been advised to undergo quarantine after a 72-year-old man who visited the facility with neurological problem tested positive for COVID-19, sources said on Wednesday.The patient had reported to the emergency with brain stroke symptoms around two days back and was immediately shifted to the Neurology ward N-S5 for evaluation and treatment."He was then subjected to radiological investigations like CT and MRI and was kept in a cubicle with other patients. He later complained of chest and respiratory distress after which his chest X-ray was done and and he was intubated. "There was some suspicion over his respiratory problems and his sample was taken and sent for testing which came out positive for COVID-19," a source said.According to an official, the patient was immediately transported to AIIMS Trauma Centre, which has been converted into a dedicated COVID-19 hospital, and contact tracing has been initiated.The neurology ward where the patient was admitted is being sanitized and doctors in the emergency department are making robust screening of all patients to identity such cases. The patient is in critical condition and doctors are keeping a close watch on his health status. "About 30 healthcare workers including doctors, nurses and technicians who came in contact with the patient have been advised to self-quarantine for 14 days. After five days, their samples would be tested," the official said.The death toll due to the novel coronavirus rose to 149 and the number of cases to 5,194 in the country on Wednesday, according to the Union Health Ministry. However, a tally of figures reported by various states as on Tuesday 9.45 p.m. showed 5,192 testing positive for coronavirus across the country and at least 162 deaths. PLB TDSTDS

A team of researchers has uncovered an array of <keyword id="20447061" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medicinal-plants" source="keywords">medicinal plants</keyword> at <keyword id="22748801" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brahmayoni-Hill" source="keywords">Brahmayoni Hill</keyword> in <keyword id="27908" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gaya" source="Orion">Gaya</keyword>, <keyword id="30033" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar" source="Orion">Bihar</keyword>, with Gymnema sylvestre (commonly known as <keyword id="22748802" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gurmar" source="keywords">Gurmar</keyword>) one of the notable findings of a study published in the International Journal of Creative Research Thoughts (IJCRT). The country's premier research agency, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has already utilised this medicinal herb in developing the anti-diabetic drug BGR-34, the researchers noted. Gurmar is known for its unique ability to reduce blood sugar levels due to the presence of gymnemic acid, which works by occupying receptor sites in the outer lining of the intestine, thereby curbing cravings for sweetness. As a result, the intestine absorbs fewer sugar molecules, which results in low blood sugar levels. In addition, the plant contains flavonoids and saponins, which help regulate lipid metabolism. Flavonoids have antioxidant properties, while saponins help lower cholesterol levels, said the Professors from Magadh University, in the study published in the International Journal of Creative Research Thoughts (IJCRT). Gurmar is one of the three medicinal plants found on the Brahmayoni Hill, a treasure trove for natural remedies on which traditional healers have been relying for diverse medicinal herbs for centuries. Gurmar, or Gymnema sylvestre, is particularly known for its anti-diabetic properties. Also, the researchers noted that the "Gurmar plant recently came to light as one of the important ingredient of the medicine BGR-34 which was developed by the CSIR and is marketed by Aimil Pharma as an anti-diabetic ayurvedic formulation. " In 2022, a study by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, also validated that the herbal formulation BGR-34 is effective in reducing obesity along with blood sugar levels. It also improves the body's metabolic system. Dr Sanchit Sharma, Executive Director of Aimil Pharma, said that BGR-34 in addition to Gurmar includes phyto-ingredients such as Daruharidra, Giloy, Vijaysar, Manjishtha, and Fenugreek to manage <keyword id="6359018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diabetes" source="Orion">diabetes</keyword>. He added that herbal-based Ayurvedic medicines are seeing a surge in popularity, driven by the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases linked to lifestyle changes and an increasing focus on preventive health. Researchers also noted in their study 'Ethnobotanical research on certain therapeutic plants found on Gaya's Brahmayoni Hill' that, like BGR-34, the first <keyword id="20037810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diabetes-drug" source="keywords">diabetes drug</keyword> Metformin was also derived from a medicinal plant, Galega. Therefore, they have called for more in-depth research on Gymnema i.e. Gurmar to provide the new generation with another effective therapeutic option. Researchers stressed involving local populations in the cultivation of the most regularly used medicinal herbs found on the hill to prevent their extinction. This collaborative approach would ensure the sustainability and availability of these valuable medicinal resources for future generations, they said.
