But if you're going to look at the way the internet played a role in the election and you're not talking about YouTube, you're doing it wrong. What do people who watch political stuff watch on YouTube? In some cases, it's just another version of TV: Fox News reportedly drew as many as 1.1 million concurrent viewers for its election-day livestream on YouTube. That was about 10% of its conventional TV audience, but still notable for a platform that skews very young. Overall, YouTube viewers consumed 67 million hours of live streams on Election Day, per <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2024/11/06/youtube-election-news-trump-harris-twitch-rumble-stream-fox-nbc/">Streams Charts</a>. But what was most interesting about the election was the way the Trump campaign spent the summer embracing YouTube personalities. Starting with people you've heard of, like Joe Rogan, down to ones you may have never heard of before this year, like the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/FULLSENDPODCAST">Nelk Boys</a>. Wait a minute! I can hear you saying. Isn't Joe Rogan a podcaster? Absolutely. But Rogan, like many other creators/influencers/personalities, creates content that lives on multiple platforms at the same time. You can listen to his <keyword id="20677488" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="podcasts" source="keywords">podcasts</keyword> on Spotify, but you can listen to them — and watch them — on YouTube. And that happens way more often than you might think. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.edisonresearch.com/youtube-is-the-preferred-podcast-listening-service/">Edison Research</a> says YouTube — including both regular, free YouTube and YouTube's paid YouTube Music service — is the most popular way for people to listen to (or watch) podcasts. You can see it in some of the numbers. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBMoPUAeLnY">Rogan's October interview with Trump</a> has drawn a staggering 47 million views (note: Don't try comparing this to a TV rating, since YouTube reportedly counts a "view" as 30 seconds of watching — and someone who watches for a bit, stops and comes back to the same video later in the day, will count as a second view). <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRyyTAs1XY8">The one he did with JD Vance</a> this month is now above 15 million. And there is a universe of conservative podcasts, or podcasts that aren't political but are open to conservative guests that do big numbers on YouTube, from former Fox hosts Tucker Carlson and Megyn Kelly to former reality TV star Theo Von. Trump visited all of them. You can also find bits of their shows on places like Instagram and TikTok. But they focus their efforts on YouTube, for the reasons many creators do. For starters, you can find a big audience there. And YouTube's algorithmic discovery mechanism means creators can get themselves in front of audiences that weren't looking for them. Podcast audiences, by contrast, grow slowly — but tend to stick around once they connect with someone they like, says Chris Balfe, CEO of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.redseatventures.com/clients">Red Seat Ventures</a>, a company that helps the likes of Carlson, Kelly and The Free Press' Bari Weiss sell ads for their shows. According to the EC's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), the cost submitted by manufacturers BEL and ECIL to carry out EVM "check and verification" is Rs 40,000 (plus 18 per cent GST) per set of EVM. "In addition to the cost incurred by the manufacturers, there are also administrative costs like cost of labour to shift the units, CCTV coverage, electricity charges, videography costs and various other operational costs at the district election officer level," the document said. It, however, said to make the <keyword id="21143428" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="verification-process" source="keywords">verification process</keyword> "more accessible" and inclusive in compliance to the referred mandate of the Supreme Court, it is decided that instead of going purely by the actual economic costs incurred, the administrative expenditure on <keyword id="22122362" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EVM-verification" source="keywords">EVM verification</keyword> will be treated as "election expenditure and borne by the central or state government, as the case may be". "Accordingly, the administrative charges will be waived for the applicants -- the same shall not be charged to the applicants," it noted. The charges for EVM verification to be paid by the applicant candidate is for the current financial year 2024-25 -- till March 31, 2025, it said. An EVM set has at least one Ballot Unit, one Control Unit and a <keyword id="19975285" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vvpat" source="keywords">VVPAT</keyword> machine. Separately, YSRCP and BJD candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha respectively have also applied for EVM check following the announcement of assembly results on June 4. In the verification exercise for assembly poll results, total assembly constituencies involved are three where verification has been sought in 26 polling stations. According to the SOP, the concerned state chief electoral officer (CEO) was required to communicate to the manufacturers the consolidated list of applicants within 30 days of the date of declaration of results -- by July 4. The CEOs have already conveyed the same to the manufacturers 15 days ahead of the schedule, the EC said. The technical SOP enumerating the methodology and steps for checking and verification of burnt memory/ micro-controller of the EVM units will be issued by the EC in due course.

Similar to Maureen, she's concerned about financial security for older Americans — but she will be supporting Vice President Kamala Harris."He says that he's going to keep Social Security, but you never know with him," Klein told BI of Trump.Americans like Maureen and Klein may decide the election. A Morning Consult <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/us/elections/polls-president-pennsylvania.html">poll</a> conducted from October 6 to 15 found Harris leading Trump in the swing state of Pennsylvania by just one point. However, among voters aged 50 and over in Pennsylvania, a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aarp.org/politics-society/government-elections/info-2024/pennsylvania-harris-trump-poll.html">poll</a> from AARP found Trump leading Harris by eight points."We're a pivotal state for this presidency," Bill Johnston-Walsh, state director of AARP Pennsylvania, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aarp.org/politics-society/government-elections/info-2024/pennsylvania-harris-trump-poll.html">said</a>. "Whoever wants it is going to have to go through us."Pennsylvania is a case study for the role the federal government will play in supporting the US's aging population over the next few decades through programs like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-retirement-of-peak-boomers-could-affect-economy-social-security-2024-4">Social Security</a> and Medicare. Pennsylvania voters and economists told BI it's vital that the next presidential administration plan for a future when retirees greatly outnumber younger Americans to ensure the economy and workforce can function effectively. As a swing state, it's critical for their campaigns that Harris and Trump listen to older Pennsylvanians' concerns.<h2 id="af5cee7e-b374-4096-b8b8-8442a2e05213">Social Security and Medicare in the hot seat</h2>Pennsylvania is aging rapidly; it has nearly 2.5 million residents over the age of 65, the fifth-highest total in the country. Nationally, the population of adults over 65 is expected to surge by 20 million between now and 2040.The state's residents rely heavily on federal government income, mainly through Social Security and Medicare, with two rural counties — Fayette and Cambria — among the most reliant in the nation, a report from the bipartisan Economic Innovation Group found.Benjamin Glasner, a coauthor of EIG's <a target="_blank" href="https://eig.org/great-transfermation/">report</a>, told BI that the most reliant counties were generally in older, poor, and more rural communities. Cambria, for example, needed more government aid after steel plant closures in the 1980s. Residents' incomes still haven't recovered."You can only receive so much from Social Security. Medicare can only cover so much, and Medicaid can only cover so much," Glasner said, adding that creates "a thin level of economic prosperity" reliant on the program's generosity."Mike Crossey, 73, has seen the limits of government aid firsthand in his work as an advocate for retirees. The Pittsburgh-area resident wants the next president of the US to strengthen Social Security, protect pensions, and expand Medicare. He said he knows too many older Americans who live off Social Security alone, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/quickfacts/stat_snapshot/">averaged</a> $1,921 nationally for retirees in September."I run into people every day who are still making decisions about, 'Do I take my prescriptions today or do I have lunch today?' And that just breaks my heart," Crossey said.While Trump has denied that he would cut Social Security and previously criticized GOP lawmakers who proposed raising the retirement age to 70, the Committee for a Responsible Budget <a target="_blank" href="https://www.crfb.org/blogs/what-would-trump-campaign-plans-mean-social-security">said</a> that Trump's policies could force cuts to Social Security benefits in as little as six years. Harris has proposed strengthening Social Security by ensuring the wealthy and big corporations pay what they owe in taxes.With the Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees report recently projecting that Social Security will only be able to pay out full benefits <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-will-social-security-benefits-run-out-retirement-crisis-boomers-2024-5">for the next 11 years</a>, the issue is growing more pressing, and not only for Pennsylvanians. Richard Fiesta, the executive director of the nonpartisan 4 million-member Alliance for Retired Americans, said that "Congress and the next administration needs to have a serious look at Social Security."Some retirees are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-savings-401k-pension-real-estate-investments-baby-boomers-2024-6">able to live comfortably</a> amid economic headwinds. However, Fiesta said the decline in defined benefit pension plans, or employer-subsidized retirement plans, contributes to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retirement-crisis-social-security-poverty-older-americans-savings-inequality-2024-3">slump in average retiree savings</a>.This means that more and more Americans rely primarily on Social Security to help keep them financially afloat as they age. The previously mentioned EIG report found that income from government aid is the fastest-growing portion of an American's income, and it is primarily driven by retirees, who make up a rising share of the total US population."And we're just kind of seeing that now over the last 10 to 15 years as that generation ages into retirement," Fiesta said.<h2 id="a2e550dc-625f-4039-8e34-cbb0ecc4d25f">An aging workforce creates job mismatches</h2>The workforce in Pennsylvania is already starting to see imbalances as the younger population dwindles and the number of retirees grows.Kyle Kopko, executive director of the bipartisan legislative agency Center for Rural Pennsylvania, said local business owners complain of labor shortages. CRP research suggests that's due to fewer older adults working traditional jobs and instead pursuing entrepreneurship to supplement their retirement incomes. At the same time, lower birth rates mean younger adults are not filling the open roles either, Kopko said."If you don't have a pool of younger adults in Pennsylvania who can backfill for some of the retirees, that's going to create supply and demand imbalances," Kopko said, referring to the role retirees play in the economy as consumers, but less so as workers.When it comes to the issue of jobs nationwide, Harris proposed tax incentives for small businesses to spur more hiring, while Trump has largely focused on bolstering manufacturing in the US to create more jobs.One possible avenue for job creation — the infrastructure industry — has hardly been mentioned by either candidate in policy discussions. Bill Candelori, a 68-year-old retired commercial painter, sees this as an overlooked opportunity. He says Biden's infrastructure investments, which brought $16 billion to Pennsylvania, was a promising step but wants the next administration to go further."It's not only roads and bridges. It's airports, it's water authorities, it's schools, it's libraries, any public project," Candelori said. "That's work for us. And it's work afterward on maintaining those facilities. It's job creation."<h2 id="485b4799-3267-4ca3-96b7-d90ae5f90405">Political steps being taken</h2>State and local governments have already taken steps to address these mounting issues. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro — a Democrat — has worked with members of his administration to create a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pa.gov/content/dam/copapwp-pagov/en/aging/documents/aging-our-way/documents/AOW%20Final%20PDF%20online%20version%20with%20signature.pdf">10-year strategic plan</a> that outlined eight key priorities for older adults, including housing, transportation, and health and community support.Pennsylvania's Aging Secretary Jason Kavulich said it's a bipartisan issue that has bipartisan support: "There is not a representative or senator who I've ever sat down with that does not care about older adults in their district."JR Reed and Krista Geer, both in charge of county-wide aging agencies, have met with older adults in Pennsylvania to hear their top worries. Geer said that one of the biggest concerns she's heard about is the high cost of living, which has interfered with their ability to afford medications, gas, and groceries. Though inflation has moderated in recent months, it's still historically elevated and putting pressure on consumers."Social security just doesn't quite keep pace with that," Geer said. The program adjusts payouts annually to account for inflation. Critics say it isn't tied to a measure that accurately reflects the spending of older Americans.Reed and Geer agree the solution is for older populations to have a bigger nest egg, but not one that comes from Social Security. Reed said that he hopes Trump or Harris will continue to fund a 1965 federal law that provides funding to states to better support older adults.At the federal level, Harris recently proposed a plan that would allow Medicare coverage for in-home eldercare, which Fiesta said would "go a long way" toward helping both older adults and the family members who typically would take care of them.Trump, to date, has offered minimal details about his plans to address eldercare. Brian Hughes — his campaign's senior advisor — told BI that the presidential hopeful and his running mate, JD Vance, "share the principles of using more choice in the marketplace and efficiency as tools for better, more affordable health care."Overall, the stakes for an aging US population are high, and bipartisan participation is required to ensure the country is properly prepared for a surge in retirees.Kavulich said that the shift needs to be addressed head-on."Older adults really drive our economies," Kavulich said. "They drive our communities, and we have to respect that. And we have to not just think of them as frail and old and vulnerable."

A battle over the future of US retirement is playing out in Pennsylvania as the election looms

The RealClearPolitics national average has narrowed by roughly 0.5 percentage points in the past week. Noted election forecaster Nate Silver's model now shows Trump with an extremely slight lead in what continues to remain a toss-up race. According to FiveThirtyEight's state averages, Trump has narrowed Harris' lead in the three so-called Blue Wall states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.Harris trolled Trump on Friday for being "exhausted," referencing a string of interviews he has reportedly walked away from."Well, if you are exhausted on the campaign trail, it raises real questions about whether you are fit for the toughest job in the world," Harris said in Michigan, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/10/18/2024-elections-live-coverage-updates-analysis/trump-skips-another-interview-00184327">referencing a Politico report</a> that Trump begged out of an interview due to "exhaustion."In response, Trump said she's a "loser" who "doesn't have the energy of a rabbit."Instead, the former president has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-going-for-crypto-bro-vote-world-liberty-financial-2024-9">hit the podcast circuit hard</a> — approaching the end of the campaign like a retired athlete loaded with stories from the glory days. In all seriousness, his team is focusing on young men. It appears to be working. According to The New York Times, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/18/upshot/polls-trump-harris-young-men.html">Trump leads Harris among young men</a> "58 percent to 37 percent, across the last three Times/Siena national polls." In contrast, Harris is driving an even larger gender gap among young women.In an era of close elections, 2024 is entering the home stretch with the potential to be one of the closest on record.<h2 id="5b26390b-d82d-4995-9be4-9043c97c0ea9">The big names are about to come out.</h2>Amid the final push, both campaigns are turning to a mix of their top surrogates. Like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton before her, Harris has virtually every top Democrat at her beck and call. She's set to stump with both Obamas separately in Georgia and Michigan, respectively. In recent days, Harris has also appeared alongside former "Shark Tank" star <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-mark-cuban-campaign-swing-states-sec-chair-2024-10">Mark Cuban</a>, her go-to billionaire. Former Congresswoman <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2020-is-back-on-the-2024-campaign-trail-2024-10">Liz Cheney</a> and other top Republicans will also continue to push Harris' theme of democracy and attack the former president for his refusal to accept his 2020 loss.Harris' team has teased bigger guests. He's never had as deep of a bench or as glitzy of guests as the Democrats. It's still news when his wife, former first lady <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/melania-trump-book-memoir-scandals-2024-10">Melania Trump,</a> joins him — as she did for Thursday night's Al Smith dinner.The former president's entire appeal is predicated on breaking with traditional US politics. It's why few, if any, GOP standard-bearers ever campaign with him. His actions leading up to and during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot have also further eroded relationships, namely with his former running mate, Mike Pence, who has said Trump endangered his family. On Friday, "Fox &amp; Friends" cohosts practically begged Trump to campaign with former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Instead of talking about his former primary foe, Trump extolled Tesla CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-trump-america-super-pac-2024-10">Elon Musk</a>. The world's richest man has donated roughly $75 million to a pro-Trump super PAC he founded. But in a razor-close election, there's always the possibility that one could fall out.Most models predict that if Trump wins Pennsylvania again, he will be the next president. If he punches a hole elsewhere, Harris could repair the damage by picking up a state like North Carolina — though the Tar Heel state has only voted for a Democratic presidential nominee once this century (Obama's 2008 victory). There's also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-trump-georgia-battleground-state-suburbs-2024-8">the possibility of Georgia</a>, a state that you might remember that Biden won by just 11,779 votes in 2020.The good news for the vice president comes from Nebraska. Like Maine, Nebraska awards some of its Electoral College votes by congressional district. In the overwhelmingly conservative state, there's a swing district, the Omaha-based Nebraska 2nd. Obama narrowly won it in 2008. Nebraska Republicans then successfully pushed to gerrymander the seat. Amid a broader demographic realignment, Biden easily won the district in 2020. Trump's best plan for Warren Buffett's backyard was a last-minute change to the state law. But <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-nebraska-2nd-electoral-college-vote-omaha-harris-mcdonnell-2024-9">it didn't work</a>. It means there is still a possibility that Harris wins the presidency 270 to 268, avoiding the possibility of just the second tie in the nation's history.Trump's team once dreamed of flipping Minnesota, New Hampshire, and perhaps even New Mexico in a rout of Biden. Since Harris' rise, they have tried to hang on to North Carolina. It's quite possible Trump could flip Georgia and Arizona, seizing on his increased standing among Black and Latino men. But barring a major surprise, Trump's best path remains to find a way to flip at least one Great Lakes state.

This mystery may linger not just this week, but throughout the term of the next government given the fickle nature of the Indian political system.
