Jayalalithaa’s confidant VK <keyword id="6358664" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sasikala">Sasikala</keyword> has been unanimously elected as her successor and will take over as General Secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). 
 
Sasikala, a close friend and confidant of Jayalalithaa, was chosen to head the party. 
 
Reportedly, the General Council body of AIADMK passed the resolution to elect Sasikala Natarajan as the General Secretary almost unanimously. However there were few dissent notes as well. The post fell vacant following the demise of party general secretary and Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on December 5. 
 
The meeting was attended by over 2000 party workers, but Sasikala wasn’t present there. 
 
Yesterday, clashes broke out between AIADMK workers and supporters of Rajya Sabha member Sasikala Pushpa outside the ruling party's office in Chennai. 
 
Sasikala Pushpa had earlier expressed her wish to contest for the party's general secretary post. Sasikala was expelled from the AIADMK sometime back but did not resign from the Rajya Sabha.

The <keyword id="19896558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu" source="keywords">Tamil Nadu</keyword> Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (<keyword id="20053164" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TANGEDCO" source="keywords">TANGEDCO</keyword>) said that it has been compelled to increase the <keyword id="20703938" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electricity-tariff" source="keywords">electricity tariff</keyword> to cover increasing <keyword id="20041852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-loss" source="keywords">financial loss</keyword>. The state <keyword id="21209946" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-distribution-company" source="keywords">power distribution company</keyword> said that the total financial loss of the Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation, which was Rs 18.954 crore in 2011-12, increased to Rs 94,312 crore in the last 10 years, TANGEDCO said in a press release. The release said that Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation has been forced to take loans from financial institutions and banks due to non-commitment in the past, like the current Tamil Nadu government's commitment of 100 per cent government absorption from 2021-22. As a result, the loan amount of Rs 43,493 crore to Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation and Power Network Corporation in 2011-12 has increased three times in the last 10 years to Rs 1,59,823 crore till (2021-22). As a result, net interest on loans increased by 259 per cent from Rs 4,588 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 16,511 crore in 2020-21, the release said. The press release said that considering the burden that may be caused to the electricity consumers due to the increase in electricity tariffs, the government has been implementing small electricity tariff hikes every year so that the consumers do not have a major impact. According to the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Power, annual electricity tariff revision is a pre-condition for availing Union Government funds under the Strengthening of Distribution System (RDSS) scheme. As per the multi-year electricity tariff order of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, from 01.07.2023 on the basis of consumer price index number, against the increase of 4.7 per cent for all electricity connections, only 2.18 per cent has been raised considering the welfare of consumerss, the release said. It is worth noting that this 2.18 per cent increase for houses is entirely covered by the government's electricity subsidy. As per the rules of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, the electricity tariff was hiked only by 2.18 per cent last year even though there was a possibility to increase the electricity tariff by up to 5 per cent, the release said. Tamil Nadu power distribution company increases electricity tariff to cover financial loss

Meanwhile, leaders of the <keyword id="20020494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="AIADMK" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="AIADMK">AIADMK</keyword> party held a protest in the Kallakurichi district against the DMK-led state government over the same. The protest was headed by Tamil Nadu Opposition Party leader and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami. It was held opposite the VAS Marriage Hall, Salem Main Road, Kallakurichi District, in Tamil Nadu. The number of people who died in Tamil Nadu after consuming <keyword id="20359588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="illicit-liquor" source="keywords">illicit liquor</keyword> has risen to 57, according to updated information released by the district administration on Monday. A total of 156 people are undergoing treatment at various Government hospitals in the state after consuming illicit liquor. A total of 110 people are undergoing treatment at the Kallakurichi Government Medical College hospital. Twelve people are admitted at Puducherry 20 people are undergoing treatment at Salem and four in Viluppuram government hospitals. A total of seven people, including five men and two women, who were undergoing treatment at hospitals in Tamil Nadu after consuming illicit liquor have been discharged, according to the Kallakurichi District Magistrate. So far, 32 people have died at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, and 18 at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem. Four people have died at the Government Villupuram Medical College and Hospital and three at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Puducherry. Earlier on Friday, Tamil Nadu <keyword id="21728762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CM-MK-Stalin" source="keywords">CM MK Stalin</keyword> said the state government will take care of the entire education and hostel expenses of children who have lost either one or both of their parents in the Kallakuruchi hooch tragedy. The government will provide Rs 5,000 in monthly assistance until the age of 18 for children who have lost both their parents and Rs 5 lakh will be deposited immediately as a fixed deposit in the names of children who have lost both parents, Stalin said. After the minors turn 18, the amount can be withdrawn with interest, the chief minister said. Similarly, Rs 3 lakh will be deposited as a fixed deposit for children who have lost one parent. Priority will be given to them in all government welfare schemes, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said.

These members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) had previously voted against Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the incumbent Chief Minister, during a ‘no-confidence’ motion in 2017. The plea for their disqualification has been pending since 20 March 2017 and DMK leader R. Sakkarapani said it will likely remain that way until the government completes its term, unless the Supreme Court intervenes. Amit Anand Tiwari, the lead advocate for DMK, told the Supreme Court that even notice to the MLAs was only issued in February 2020, three years after the fact. "Despite that nothing has been done for the last 4 months, whereas the law requires the Speaker to decide a petition from disqualification within an outer limit of three months,” the plea said. Subsequently, Panneerselvam raised a banner of revolt on February 7, along with his supporters.
