Here’s a fun twist you might not expect: a recent study shows that most people can't tell if a poem was crafted by a human or AI — and even more surprising, we often prefer the AI versions! Researchers Brian Porter and Edouard Machery from the University of Pittsburgh put this theory to the test, and the results reveal something pretty quirky about our poetic tastes. <h2>Human or AI? You decide!</h2>For this experiment, Porter and Machery recruited over 1,600 participants and gave them a batch of <keyword id="6355263" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="poetry" source="Orion">poetry</keyword> to read. Each participant got ten poems, five written by legendary poets like William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, Lord Byron, and T.S. Eliot, and five crafted by ChatGPT-3.5 mimicking these poets’ styles. Participants had no idea which ones were real and which were AI. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="115273975" title="5 interesting takeaways from Slack&amp;#39;s survey of 17,000 desk workers about AI" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>The shocker was that readers were more likely to think the AI poems were written by humans! In fact, the poems people thought least likely to be human were often written by the very poets we’d consider masters of the craft. <h2>What makes a poem feel "real"?</h2>Curious to dive deeper, the researchers set up a second experiment with 696 new participants. This time, each reader rated poems on things like beauty, emotion, rhythm, and originality. The readers were divided into three groups: some were told the poems were written by humans, others by AI, and a third group got no information at all. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="115299674" title="Instead of killing jobs, there&amp;#39;s a strange AI hiring boom happening, according to Marc Andreessen" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>They found that if you tell someone a poem was AI-generated, they’re likely to rate it lower on just about every quality. But here’s the twist: when people didn’t know who wrote the poems, they often rated the AI-generated ones higher than the human written ones! <h2>So, why are we falling for AI poetry?</h2>Turns out, AI poems often end up being a little more straightforward and easy to enjoy, while poems by famous poets can be more complex and challenging. Instead of appreciating the depth of a classic poet’s work, readers sometimes mistake complexity for confusion and move on. <keyword id="23985627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-generated-poems" source="keywords">AI-generated poems</keyword>, meanwhile, serve up their message in a style that feels familiar and easy to “get,” making them more enjoyable at first glance. Basically, we tend to believe we’ll prefer human poetry. But in reality, AI’s smooth style is just easier to like — and we interpret this as a sign the poem was created by a human. New study finds readers can’t tell AI poems from human ones — and they often prefer AI

Business Insider verified her identity, transcript, and employment.I planned to go to med school when I first started college, but I chose to study English literature because I enjoyed it and knew I could get a good GPA.I gravitated toward English because I really like the analytical aspect of criticizing works and conducting poetry analysis. All of it was super interesting to me.Now, I work at a company that uses AI to perform <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-learn-data-analytics-new-skills-english-major-math-2023-6">predictive analytics</a> for insurance companies. I train processors to extract data so that we can templateize it and create databases. I also do some prompt engineering where I draw insights from hundreds of pages of medical records or attorney statements.This is how I went from studying English to working in tech.<h2 id="ef7c6998-c28a-4cf4-9181-9ec6cec8732d">Switching gears</h2>In my third year of college I realized I didn't want to do another 10 years in the education system for med school, so I started researching what I could do. The biggest thing that stood out to me was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-data-scientist-debunks-ai-job-myths-2024-8">data science, machine learning, and AI</a>.Data science felt similar to English literature because you have to draw parallels between different data points and figure out how correlated they are and what impacts them.I started self-studying data science with Coursera Udemy and did a bunch of online courses. I learned how to code and the ins and outs of AI and machine learning. ChatGPT also came out around that time so I played around with it a lot and developed prompt engineering skills by doing some projects involving ChatGPT.I also talked to a hiring manager at Tesla for a senior AI position to get more information on what I should do. She told me to start with MIT OpenCourseWare. So I watched a lot of the videos and did the homework and practice quizzes.<h2 id="1332d0ed-c3b1-4b17-af59-1b61ef9c337b">How I ended up in my current job</h2>I applied to some jobs but mostly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ai-job-market-changed-interviews-companies-expect-llm-experience-2024-7">reached out to hiring managers and </a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ai-job-market-changed-interviews-companies-expect-llm-experience-2024-7">directors</a>. I ended up getting my first job at an AI startup by getting on a call with the CEO. I reached out to him and he gave me a job after interviewing me.I got my second job, where I currently work, the same way. I reached out to the startup's CEO and they did a quick interview that turned into an internship, which became a job.I was a bit apprehensive about switching into tech, and was worried I may have to spend a year or two learning before I could get a job. But my dad works in tech and he always said you don't need a lot of formal education to understand the basics and get your foot in the door.<h2 id="81f17c36-b0a0-4e75-a240-cfe33b549c33">I don't regret majoring in English</h2>I have no regrets about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-data-scientist-personal-ai-project-important-land-job-2024-7">choosing English literature as a major.</a> But I do have some regrets about doubting it in the middle.The biggest thing I value about studying English literature is the consideration of multiple perspectives. I think that really helps with AI or data science because it encourages you to consider different angles. I don't see a lot of that going on in more STEM-based environments because there tends to be one right answer.If you're thinking of making a similar transition, I think the biggest thing is figuring out what you like about the humanities major you chose and figuring out how those skills can be applied externally.It makes employers think you're creative because you're able to apply what you learned from one domain into another, which makes you more useful in the job market.

People were using it to write code, compose poetry, write content and whatnot. Soon, tools like ChatGPT became a part of many working professionals' lives. Over the last few months, there have been many reports highlighting how AI is turning out to be a part of workplaces. Now, a recent report says that women in the tech industry see generative AI as a crucial step towards their career growth. However, there is a major challenge being encountered- they aren't trained enough to use GenAI tools. <h2>90 percent women feel GenAI is a step towards career growth</h2>A new report by <keyword id="19955786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nasscom" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="nasscom" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="nasscom">Nasscom</keyword> and Boston Consulting Group (<keyword id="20058186" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCG" source="keywords">BCG</keyword>) has revealed that while 90% of women in India's tech industry view Generative AI (GenAI) as crucial for career growth, only one-third feel adequately prepared to use these technologies. Hence, even though women view GenAI as a crucial step in their professional journey, most of them still aren't confident using it. The report, titled "GenAI: The Diversity Game Changer We Can't Ignore," was unveiled at the nasscom Global Inclusion Summit in Bengaluru on August 8, 2024. The report highlights that women in both tech and non-tech roles exhibit high levels of professional ambition and are willing to put in extra effort to achieve success. This ambition is particularly pronounced in the AI/GenAI field, where women see mentorship as a key factor in their success. Currently, women make up 36% of India’s tech workforce but remain underrepresented in executive roles. GenAI, which involves advanced AI tools that can create new content, designs, and solutions, is seen as a game-changer for the tech industry. As GenAI is expected to dominate 33% of the global AI landscape by 2027, the market is projected to reach $320-380 billion. This rapid growth presents a unique opportunity for fostering gender diversity by helping women overcome traditional barriers and excel in their careers. The report reveals that women are ready to invest more time to achieve professional success in GenAI. According to the survey findings, 95% of junior, 96% of mid-management, and 100% of senior management women are prepared to put in extra effort. Women also view GenAI tools as a significant boost to their perceived competence, with 45% of <keyword id="20599228" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="women-in-tech" source="keywords">women in tech</keyword> roles feeling more confident compared to their non-tech peers. <h2>Challenges in GenAI adoption</h2>Despite the enthusiasm, many women at senior management levels face challenges in adopting GenAI tools. These challenges include limited knowledge, lack of trust, restricted access to these tools, and fear of competence scrutiny. Knowledge gaps are the primary barrier, cited by women across all levels from entry roles to the C-suite. Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at nasscom, talked about the importance of addressing these challenges: “Despite significant progress in diversity and AI/GenAI adoption, substantial gaps still limit women's full potential in the tech industry. With GenAI set to dominate the tech industry, it is critical to address key challenges such as knowledge gaps and lack of support, to empower women, particularly in these roles.” Meanwhile, Sreyssha George, Managing Director and Partner, Boston Consulting Group said, "Globally, senior women lead in GenAI adoption, yet India lags with a 64% gender disparity in AI leadership. To capture the USD 320 billion AI market, India’s tech sector needs diversity. This will ensure effective systems by eliminating biases and incorporating varying ethical perspectives. Most women in tech feel GenAI can help them grow in their careers but don't know how to use it, Nasscom-BCG reports

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Shane Guffogg is a multi-media abstract artist with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-can-i-test-if-i-have-synesthesia-2015-3">synesthesia</a>, meaning he "hears color." </li><li>Guffogg worked with AI experts and musicians to compose music that corresponds to his paintings. </li></ul>This is an as-told-to conversation with Shane Guffogg, an American artist who launched "At the Still Point of the Turning World – Strangers of Time," an exhibition of 21 paintings at the Venice Biennale earlier this month. This conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.I have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/people-who-see-letters-as-colors-learned-it-from-a-toy-2015-3">synesthesia</a>, which means I hear color.So, what I'm listening to when I paint is important. I listen to Indian classical music, Gregorian chants, and some obscure composers such as György Ligeti, Leo Ornstein, and Terry Riley. The music sparks my creativity and allows me to be completely present and in that moment.For years, I've been preoccupied with what my paintings might sound like. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ai-is-changing-everything">AI revolution</a> pushed me to search for experts who could help me. My first point of contact was Radhika Dirks, an AI and quantum computing expert. We had a couple of Zoom sessions, and she told me — to the best of her knowledge — that no AI program could help me. Instead, she suggested I create a visual alphabet that matched the musical chords I heard in my mind to colors.I thought it could be a way to propel my creativity. It also built upon the idea of an unconscious alphabet that has informed my art throughout my career.<h2>I met with musicians and AI experts to create a visual alphabet</h2>I started by looking for musicians to collaborate with and met Anthony Cardella, a young, incredibly gifted pianist in Los Angeles. He's a Ph.D. student at USC and happened to know — and even play — many obscure composers I listen to when I paint.We started collaborating. We would sit down and examine my paintings together. I would zoom in on a color in Photoshop, look at it, and sensorially feel the musical note. Then I would tell Anthony. I'd say, for example, I think that's the color of the note B. He'd hit the B, and I'd say, "No, that's not it; try a B sharp?" After a few trials, he'd suddenly hit the right notes. I would know because the colors would begin to vibrate for me. Together, we've charted chords that correspond to 40 colors.Soon after, I met an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-ai-100-2023-the-people-who-make-ai-intelligent-2023-10">AI researcher</a> named Jonah Lynch through mutual contacts. He works at the intersection of the digital humanities and machine learning. I invited him over to my ranch in central California and explained the work I had been doing and how I created my paintings. We had long discussions about art, poetry, and creating an AI algorithm that could be fed the chords.He developed a program to "read'' my paintings and convert them into music. I gave him the main colors I used in each painting and the chords I hear when I see those colors. Jonah watched videos of me painting, studied the movement of my hands, and wrote software that sampled images of the paintings, following my hand movements, and assigned each color sampled from the paintings to its corresponding chord. Then, he fed this sequence of chords into a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-researchers-have-turned-agi-race-upside-down-with-paper-2023-11">neural network</a> that has memorized most of the last 500 years of keyboard music. He prompted the network to "dream" of new sequences based on the color-chord sequences and the history of Western music to create pages of sheet music.When I heard that music played back to me, it brought tears to my eyes. It was just a rough version of what I heard while painting, but I thought, "There it is."I took the music back to Anthony, the pianist. Amazingly, I could point to the sheet music and tell him what compositions I was listening to while painting, and he'd say, "Yes, I can see it in the chords." The Indian ragas, the Gregorian chants, the Ligeti, and Ornstein — they were all there.Still, the music was largely a series of chords at that stage. Anthony said we could have melodies if we rearranged it a bit.<h2>AI is still a tool that needs human oversight.</h2><div type="image" title="Only Through Time Time is Conquered by Shane Guffogg" height="2811" width="3600" msid="109667786" hostid="261"></div>We composed music for several paintings and have played it for audiences worldwide. We held a concert last month at the Forest Lawn Museum in Los Angeles, where I also had a few paintings in a show. The audience could look at the paintings while Anthony played, which was a profound experience. A couple of people cried.At the launch of my latest exhibition during the opening week of the Venice Biennale, Anthony played the world premiere of a sonata he composed inspired by my painting, Only Through Time Time is Conquered, to a live audience. After the performance, I talked to several people, and they said they could see where the colors and the notes met on the painting. It was something they had never experienced.I know many <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-biggest-fears-risk-threat-chatgpt-openai-google-2023-6">people are very afraid of AI</a>, and I, too, see it as a tool that needs human oversight. It's not a means to an end. Still, it opened up many possibilities and enhanced my creative process. I don't know if I could have unlocked the musicality in my paintings in a real way without it. We chose — Chandler Bing, Dwight Schrute, Sheldoon Cooper, an ardent Shah Rukh Khan lover and Sherlock Holmes. Ahead of them all, we asked it to mimic the style of the greatest writer that ever lived – Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon. Here are the results of our little experiment and what we thought of ChatGPT output. Not on board with the Bard’s letter According to ChatGPT this is how Shakespeare would have written a letter if he had to. While we are digging the language, this seems like bland poetry. Would he ever go as basic as a thirsty man for water? This is just Hindi movie lyrics in Shakespearean English. While we will probably never really know who Shakespeare was or if he wrote all the plays he is credited with, what we do know for sure is that words from his heart cannot be as simple. When we asked ChatGPT to profess a single woman’s love for SRK, it sounded more like an essay on the superstar rather than the description of an ardent lover of the dimple-chinned charmer. We didn't hear any imaginary violins play when we read this letter that ChatGPT produced for SRK: “Dear Shah Rukh Khan, It’s not just your acting that has me smitten. Your smile, your laugh, your warm and caring nature, all of these things make me fall in love with you over and over again. Your passion for life, your hard work, and your dedication to your craft are all qualities that I admire deeply. I know that I am just one of many fans, and that you are probably inundated with letters like this every day. But I just had to take a chance and express my feelings to you. I am a single woman, searching for love and happiness, and I can't help but think that you could be the one to bring that into my life. I understand that our worlds are very different, and that we may never meet in person, but I wanted to reach out to you nonetheless. Also, is Holmes even half as fun without the doctor in tow? If we shouldn’t expect an AI to go so deep, it should have at least used the word ‘deduction’ or 'elementary'. Your insights and observations have been invaluable in my work as a detective, and I can only hope that I have been of equal help to you in your endeavors.” If Chandler Bing would… OH MY GOD! No, let’s hope this love letter is not written for Janice but sure that’s the reaction this would evoke. But this time around, ChatGPT got the first thing on everyone’s minds when they think of Chandler —- Can this beeee anymore right? It’s also very Chandler to mention the names of all the other girls while writing a love letter. For that we like this letter more than the others. But it looks like the AI system has studied a lot of the memes and chatter of this very popular Friends character. Although that always helps, we wish the AI picked up a few more books instead of spending “all” its time surfing the net. Here’s an excerpt from Bing’s proposal – also he did not promise that his future wife never has to take his last name’... “Could I BE any more in love with you? I mean, I know I say that a lot, but I really, really mean it. You're like my lobster, y'know? We're meant to be together, and I don't want to spend another day without you. I know sometimes I can be a little awkward and sarcastic, but I hope you know that it's only because I'm crazy about you. You make me laugh and smile in a way that nobody else can, and I can't imagine my life without you. So, what do you say? Will you be my Monica? My Rachel? My Janice? (Just kidding about that last one.) Let's be together, forever and always.” From Dwight to Angela We have to be fair in our assessment. Even though the beginning of the Chat GPT letter by the whimsical ‘assistant to the regional manager’ Dwight from the hit series The Office sounded colourless, the letter managed to somewhat capture the essence of love for his cat-lover lady love Angela. The Dunder Mifflin salesman Dwight, in the letter, asks Angela to assist him in a “hostile takeover of Dunder Mifflin or a zombie apocalypse”. If Dwight used ChatGPT, we would not guarantee the same results though. My dearest Angela, I have long harboured feelings for you, which I believe may be the result of an evolutionary drive to ensure the survival of our species through strong genetic bonds. Your impressive intelligence, resourcefulness, and impeccable work ethic have captivated me, and I find myself thinking of you constantly, even in the midst of a beet harvest. Please consider my proposal, as I believe we could be a formidable team, and together we could overcome any obstacle, whether it be a hostile takeover of Dunder Mifflin or a zombie apocalypse.
