<br /><ul><li><keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="keywords">Electric vehicles</keyword> (EVs) are gaining popularity worldwide</li><li>However,  concerns remain about their environmental impact</li><li> <keyword id="21881868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alternative-fuel" source="keywords">Alternative fuel</keyword> vehicles like hydrogen fuel cells and biofuels are some more alternatives we can tap into</li></ul><br /><br />Electric vehicles or EVs are in their prime right now, with the demand crossing an all-time high. A trend noticeable around the world, EVs are not only becoming increasingly popular but also fairly affordable. Slowly but surely EVs are overcoming the challenges that crossed them — design, features, safety, and most importantly range. A major credit to this trend can be given to consumer acceptance, policy backing, and improving infrastructure. <br /><br />However, there is a downside to EVs as well. Having featured multiple EVs with our series<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCR3PaYxcmk&amp;t=1s" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank"> Short Spin, </a>I developed a strong reference point. This made me wonder why are we so heavily reliant on them. Over its life cycle, EVs cannot be termed as particularly environmentally friendly, which has been their main selling point over the past few decades. <br /><br /><h2>The ‘Red’ side of EVs</h2> <br />There is a bit of red within the go-green agenda that EV manufacturers push. EVs as a whole do come with benefits like low maintenance, improved efficiency and ultimately lower fuel emissions. However, <keyword id="21357488" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EV-production" source="keywords">EV production</keyword> and disposal can have detrimental effects on the natural environment. Here are some socio-ecological concerns over EVs:<br /><br /><strong>1. High carbon footprint in battery production:</strong> EV battery production is energy-intensive and often relies on electricity from fossil fuels, leading to a high initial carbon footprint. This is elaborated in a story recently published by Earth Org. <br /><br /><strong>2. Resource constraints and ethical concerns: </strong>Particularly with the extensive mining of cobalt and other minerals for EVs, there has been a global outcry. Limited availability of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, shady mining practices long work hours, unsafe work environments, and use of child labour in underdeveloped parts of the world have raised several ethical issues around the sustainability of EVs. This issue can be explored further in this essay by Al Jazeera. <br /><br /><strong>3. Recycling and end-of-life challenges: </strong>EV battery recycling is currently inefficient, costly, and poses significant environmental risks, with a huge amount of batteries ending up in landfills.<br /><br /><strong>4. Manufacturing costs and economic barriers: </strong>High production costs, especially for batteries, make EVs more expensive than conventional vehicles and require significant investments in new manufacturing facilities and supply chains.<br /><br /><strong>5. Supply chain and geopolitical risks: </strong>Critical mineral resources necessary for EV production are concentrated in a few countries. This leads to vulnerabilities in the complex supply chain and often risks disruptions due to geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, or natural disasters. China as of today controls 83% of EV battery production in the world, with a major stronghold on the supply chain. <br /><br />While I am in no way suggesting to drop out of EVs, I believe sticking to just one alternative risks replicating the same mistake we did for ICE vehicles. So, what are the alternatives?<br /><br /><h2>The alternates fuel vehicles (<keyword id="23193800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AFVs" source="keywords">AFVs</keyword>)</h2><br />AFVs are a growing segment of the automotive industry that utilize fuels other than traditional gasoline or diesel. These vehicles offer similar potential benefits such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. While EVs are also a form of AFVs, here we will list out other major alternatives like hydrogen fuel and biofuel options.<br /><br /><strong>Hydrogen fuel cells: </strong>Convert hydrogen gas into electricity, emitting only water vapour. Currently, <keyword id="19906788" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toyota" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Toyota" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Toyota">Toyota</keyword> and Hyundai are the only hydrogen-based cars in the Indian market. <br /><br /><strong>Hydrogen internal combustion engines:</strong> These vehicles use hydrogen as a fuel in modified combustion engines. While road-legal vehicles for this fuel type aren’t out, BMW with hydrogen 7 is working on a prototype.<br /><br /><strong>Ethanol: </strong>This is a renewable fuel made from plant materials, commonly mixed with gasoline. In America, Ford F-150 Flex-Fuel and Chevrolet Silverado Flex-Fuel are utilizing this technology. <br /> <br /><strong>Biodiesel and renewable diesel: </strong>Derived from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled grease, these fuel types can be used in diesel engines.<br /> <br /><strong>Compressed Natural Gas (CNG):</strong> Perhaps the most famous alternative for cabbies in Delhi, CNG is in popular demand. Technically it is used in specially modified internal combustion engines, primarily for lower emissions.<br /> <br /><strong>Propane (Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG):</strong> A byproduct of natural gas processing and crude oil refining, used in internal combustion engines. <br /><br />As technology continues to advance, these AFVs are becoming more accessible and affordable, making them a promising option for sustainable transportation. EVs are not the only options for alternative fuel — make way for hydrogen and bio-fuel

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Ukraine appears to have destroyed a rare Soviet-era armored fighting vehicle.</li><li>The Ladoga was designed for use in "doomsday" environments.</li></ul><p>Ukraine appears to have destroyed a rare Soviet-era armored fighting vehicle (AFV) designed in the 1970s as a means of transport for senior Kremlin officials in the event of a nuclear attack.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://t.me/ombr_63/520">A video posted on X, formerly Twitter,</a> which bears the insignia of Ukraine's 63rd Mechanized Brigade, appears to show the AFV, known as the "Ladoga," as it is targeted by a drone.</p><p>The Ladoga's appearance on the modern-day battlefield could highlight Russia's struggle to replace its fast-dwindling reserve of tanks and armored vehicles.</p><p>Business Insider was unable to independently verify the claims but <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/AFVRec_">AFV recognition,</a> a social media account that tracks Russian armor vehicles, confirmed to BI that they believed the vehicle seen in the video was a Ladoga.</p><p>The AFV Recognition account holder, who spoke anonymously as they said they were serving in the military, told BI that it was "extremely surprising" to see the vehicle out in the field, noting that they had not seen any photographs or records of them leaving storage facilities, which may suggest it was moved "some degree of secrecy."</p><div type="image" title="Ladoga" height="441" width="710" msid="109105706" hostid="261"></div><h2>The Ladoga AFV</h2><p>The Ladoga's intended role as a transport vehicle for the Soviet political elite in a potential nuclear attack led to it being nicknamed the "Doomsday Tank."</p><p>The vehicle combines the armored hull of a T-80 tank chassis with a 1,250-horsepower gas turbine engine.</p><p>The AFV Recognition account holder said that the "rear-facing exhaust" shown in the video confirmed that the vehicle was "certainly a T-80 chassis vehicle."</p><p>It is believed that only four or five Ladogas were ever made, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/03/27/ukraine-destroys-1970s-russian-tank-tested-at-chernobyl/">The Telegraph</a> reported.</p><p>The vehicle was first field-tested after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April 1986, when it carried out "chemical reconnaissance" of the area, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CwaAv1psvcs/?hl=en">per AFV Recognition</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Ladoga" height="442" width="703" msid="109105708" hostid="261"></div><p>Photos of the Ladoga's interior show comfy chairs, tables, and monitors.</p><p>It also had a ventilation system and storage for food and water that could last the crew for up to 48 hours, per AFV Recognition.</p><p>Russia has lost a huge quantity of tanks and armored vehicles since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.</p><p>In February, Bastian Giegerich, the director-general of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-lost-more-tanks-than-before-ukraine-war-iiss-2024-2">International Institute for Strategic Studies</a> think tank, said that Russia had likely lost over 3,000 tanks since the invasion began.</p><p>"To put that into perspective, Russia's battlefield tank losses are greater than the number it had when it launched its offensive in 2022," Giegerich said.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-indefinite-supply-soviet-tanks-storage-ukraine-military-experts-2023-7">Russia has been forced</a> to turn to older Soviet models — as well as surprising alternatives such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2024/03/22/russias-golf-cart-troops-dont-stand-a-chance/">Chinese golf carts</a> — to make up for its losses.</p><p>But Russia maintains a significant advantage over Ukraine in terms of munitions and equipment supplies, the UK's <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1774049069322682668">Ministry of Defence</a> (MoD) said in an update on the conflict last week.</p><p>The MoD said Russia was likely recruiting 30,000 additional troops a month, adding that it was "highly likely" it could continue its attacks on Ukraine and absorb losses.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Videos appear to show Russia using vulnerable golf cart-style vehicles near the frontline in Ukraine.</li><li>The Chinese-made vehicles are typically used on farms and construction sites.</li></ul><p>Russia appears to be using open-top golf cart-style vehicles near the frontline in Ukraine, possibly in response to suffering significant vehicle losses during the war.</p><p>One video appears to show a Russian armored column, which included<a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2024/03/04/its-true-the-russian-army-attacked-ukrainian-positions-in-open-top-golf-carts/"> several Desertcross 1000-3 all-terrain vehicles,</a> attacking Ukrainian positions in Donetsk Oblast, Forbes reported.</p><p>The vehicles were being used to transport infantry to the frontline, per Forbes, and the video shows them being struck by shells and explosives dropped from drones.</p><p>The video ends with shots of the open-top vehicles lying wrecked in the mud.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/front_ukrainian/status/1765625237259812874">Another video </a>appears to show another similar vehicle being struck by an anti-tank mine, and other photos appear to show more of the all-terrain vehicles lying abandoned in a field.</p><p>Business Insider was not able to verify the videos.</p><p>Forbes reporter David Axe noted that the vehicles lack armor and weaponry and are typically seen on farms and construction sites, not on the battlefield.</p><p>"It's reckless, if not insane, to deploy an open-top, unarmored all-terrain vehicle — in essence, a heavy-duty golf cart — in combat just a quarter mile from the front line," Axe wrote.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/a1d6fd56-120c-4ce8-9684-738c1376e135">Russia's military purchased hundreds of the Chinese-made vehicles </a>in December amid reports that the country was increasingly turning to Chinese suppliers for equipment following major losses.</p><p>At the time, local media published a video of<a target="_blank" href="https://tass.com/defense/1704361"> President Vladimir Putin inspecting </a>the off-road buggies, and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told him that they were "extremely in demand."</p><p>Despite China's insistence that it is not selling military equipment to Russia, Ukraine's allies have expressed concern about the sale of non-lethal goods that might be used on the battlefield.</p><p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said last year that Russia was "dependent on willing third-country individuals and entities to resupply its military and perpetuate its heinous war against Ukraine."</p><p>"We will not hesitate in holding them accountable," she said.</p><p>The vehicle manufacturer, Chinese company Shandong Odes, would be vulnerable to retaliation from authorities in the US because of its high volume of sales in the country, the Financial Times noted in December.</p><p>The vehicles are popular in the US among farmers and power sports enthusiasts, according to the paper.</p><p>Since it launched its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has lost about 2,600 main battle tanks and 4,900 other armored vehicles, the UK Defense Ministry previously said in <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1751898118436655191?s=20">an intelligence update.</a></p><p>With the conflict now entering its third year, both Russia and Ukraine continue to grapple with personnel and equipment shortages.</p><p>Ukraine has urged its Western allies to maintain their support, as President Joe Biden's request for additional military aid for Ukraine remains stalled in Congress.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Audio of glass breaking and a child saying "oh no, our table, it's broken" has exploded on <keyword id="11894125" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tiktok" source="Orion">TikTok</keyword>.</li><li>The audio comes from a clip that appears to have first aired on America's Funniest Home Videos.</li></ul><p>Audio of a child saying, "oh no! our table! it's broken!" has become one of TikTok's biggest try-not-to-laugh challenges years after the clip, which also features the shattering sound of a broken table, first began circulating online in 2016 after it appears to have aired on the ABC program "America's Funniest Home Videos."</p><p><a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@chefsbrim/video/6987871350966750469?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=0&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;sender_web_id=68912598098960563261259809896056326">Uploaded to TikTok in July by the user @chefsbrim</a>, the sound is popularly used by users who film themselves trying not to laugh as they lip-sync along to its words. It has soundtracked over 411,000 videos, some of which feature the try-not-to-laugh challenge, while others show users pantomiming the sound.</p>  <p>While the shattering noise of the table has echoed in thousands of TikTok videos in 2021, it's been circulating online in various forms for half a decade. </p><h2>The video appears to have originally aired on 'America's Funniest Home Videos' in 2016</h2><p>The video appears to have come into internet fame by airing on "America's Funniest Home Videos" ("AFV"), the ABC television program that compiles funny home videos, as its name suggests, with the chance for their owners to win cash prizes. <a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/oh-no-our-table-its-broken">Per Know Your Meme</a>, the video originally aired on "AFV" in February 2016, and was <a href="https://vine.co/v/ivnp5qbmOUw">also uploaded to the show's account on Vine,</a> the now-defunct short-form video app. </p><p>In the video, a child stacks what appear to be bricks on a table as multiple people film the stunt. Too much weight causes the towers of bricks to fall and the table to crumble, producing the glass-shattering sound of the century.</p><p>"Oh no!" The child exclaims as he approaches the site of destruction. "Our table! It's broken!"</p><p>On Vine, the clip received approximately 971,100 "loops" - Vine parlance for views - the archived post shows. That was only the beginning of its online fame. </p><p>Clips of the video were re-uploaded sporadically since its original air date in 2016 on platforms like YouTube and <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/instant_regret/comments/9zdcyo/kid_stacks_bricks_on_glass_table/">Reddit</a>. In some cases, the challenge seems to have circled around in parody, with users making exaggerated facial expressions as if they're holding in laughter. </p>   <p>Long-standing meme sounds regularly circle around into TikTok fame, and "oh no, our table, it's broken" is just the latest.
