The <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> is planning to discontinue giving blankets in some AC trains, following criticism that it gives dirty blankets to passengers. Recently, a CAG report criticised the railways on cleanliness and hygiene in trains and stations. Instead, railways is working on a pilot project to maintain the temperature of the <keyword id="6369612" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="AC-coaches">AC coaches</keyword>. The railways will work on a pilot project and maintain the temperature at 24°C in these AC coaches, up from the current 19°C. According to initial estimates, the move to do away with blankets is an economical option, considering that it takes Rs 55 to clean the bedroll while passengers are charged just Rs 22 for it. Railways guidelines stipulate that the blankets are to be washed every one to two months, which was not being followed, resulting in the transporter being flooded with complaints.

Rs 11.17 crore! That’s how much <keyword id="61108" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="North-Central-Railway">North Central Railway</keyword> (NCR) and <keyword id="82627" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="South-Central-Railway">South Central Railway</keyword> (SCR) have levied from its passengers for booking in superfast trains. However, a recent investigation by <keyword id="6356851" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="CAG">CAG</keyword> shows, these ‘superfast’ trains have been delayed almost 95% times. <keyword id="51689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Railway-Board">Railway Board</keyword> has defined superfast trains as the ones that run at an average speed of 55kmph. Given the fact that most express trains with exception to a handful runs on that speed, passengers are charged extra for most long distance train travels. The study done between 2013-14 to 2015-16 in NCR and SCR shows that these trains reached the destination late between 13.48% and 95.17% of the days on which they ran. In total, 21 superfast trains were delayed on 3,000 days out of 16,804 days because they failed to attain the 'superfast' speed, according to a TOI news report. Currently there is no policy by which the railways will refund money to passengers automatically for delays. It’s only when a person files a ticket deposit against reservation (<keyword id="59440" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="TDR">TDR</keyword>) against a train delayed for more than three hours is a refund possible. Also 'superfast' surcharges vary for different class of coaches. For example, it is Rs 15 for general coaches, Rs 30 for sleeper, Rs 45 for AC (chair car, AC-3 economy, AC-3, AC-2 classes) and Rs 75 for AC First/Executive class which were effective from April 1, 2013, as per the TOI news report. <keyword id="6356295" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agra">Agra</keyword> divisional commercial manager <keyword id="4798023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanchit-tyagi">Sanchit Tyagi</keyword> told TOI, "There are scores of factors which lead to trains not achieving their superfast speed, thus causing delays. Some the prominent factors are the maintenance of tracks, signal glitches, emergency brakes and accidents which contribute in the late operations of railways."

<ul><li><keyword id="65866" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRCTC">IRCTC</keyword> to launch special train to attract international tourists from Buddhist countries like Japan, China, Thailand and Sri Lanka. </li><li>The first rake of the train will roll out by the end of October although the train will be functional from December. </li><li>The train’s route will include important Buddhist destinations like Bodh Gaya, Budh Vihar, Sarnath and Kushi Nagar. </li></ul><keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword> are leaving no effort to attract foreign travellers. After launching the Ask Disha app for domestic and foreign travellers, Indian Railways are now targeting tourists from Japan, China, Thailand and Sri Lanka by launching a special train on the <keyword id="6394118" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="buddhist-circuit">Buddhist Circuit</keyword>. The important Buddhist destinations to be connected are Bodh Gaya, Budh Vihar, Sarnath and Kushi Nagar. The ticket fare of the route is yet to be decided. As per media <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/infrastructure/railways/wonderful-indian-railways-to-launch-special-train-with-world-class-facilities-on-buddhist-circuit/1352656/">reports,</a> the special express train will be managed by Indian Railways Catering and Tourists Corporation (IRCTC). The first route of the train is expected to be decided and kicked off by the of the year. Although, IRCTC will roll out its first rake by the end of October. Presently, the rail coaches are being manufactured in the Rail Coach Factory located at Kapurthala. The second train designed specially for international tourists, inspired by the Maharaja Express, will have 12 coaches. The first rake of the train will constitute four AC first class coaches followed by two second class coaches and one AC 3-tier coach designed specifically for staff. The first rake will also include two power car coaches, a pantry and two coaches for the dining car facility. The train will have a very fancy outer body and top notch facilities for the travellers. Some of the facilities includes digital lockers, venetian windows, decorative lighting, touch-free taps, bio toilets with vacuum evacuation, soap dispensers, CCTV camera, anti graffiti coaching and tea/coffee vending machines.

Like they promised, the <keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> finally unveiled the rail coaches with revamped interiors and even conducted a successful mock run! The passenger coaches which look absolutely comfortable and mindblowing have been designed by Bhopal's coach rehabilitation workshop (CRWS), Nishatpura. 
 
These coaches have been given beautiful interiors and jerk-less seats. Additionally, say goodbye to teh red and green seats as the seats too have been given a colour makeover and the colour replacing them is purple. According to the Indian Railways, these purple seats instantly give a high class look and feel. 
 
They have also ensured that the coaches are spacious and have bigger side-berths. What more? They also come equipped with a snacks table, LED reading lights and bio-toilets installed. 
 
There's more. The floor of the coach is painted like a carpet, the seats are fire-proof and there is a water-bottle holder next to every seat. 
 
What seals the deal is however the fact that every compartment has a separate mobile and laptop charging points. Hell to the yeah! 
 
While the AC coaches have cost the government a whopping Rs 70 lakh, sleeper coaches have cost around Rs 40 lakh.

<keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Railways">Indian Railways</keyword> will soon launch new and improved coaches, which were ordered to assist in operating at 200 kmph speed. 
 
These modern coaches come with automatic sliding door, stainless steel brake disc, sintered pads and electro-pneumatically assisted brake system. 
Manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, each coach is estimated to cost about Rs 3.25 crore. 
 
A total of 20 coaches will be manufactured at RCF out of which four are almost ready and the rest will be delivered in June this year as announced by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in his last budget. 
 
The new initiative involves manufacturing a rake of 20 coaches which comprises 14 AC chair cars, 3 Executive Chair cars and 3 Power cars. 
 
Other features which are incorporated in these 200 kmph coaches include improved passenger safety and comfort. The coaches will have aesthetically pleasant interiors with spacious and ergonomically designed seats. 
 
The lavatories of these coaches will have redesigned interior and equipped with vacuum evacuation assisted toilets. The plush interiors will have touchless fittings in taps, hand dryers and soap dispensers besides marble finish and anti graffiti coating on walls.

<ul><li><keyword id="6355455" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian railways</keyword> just unveiled their first <keyword id="248686" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-coach">smart coach</keyword> in line with the country’s ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative.</li><li>The interface on-board monitors the train on two fronts, coach maintenance and passenger welfare. </li><li>The Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit (PICCU) has been implemented with the aim of cutting down on maintenance costs.</li></ul>Riding on the ‘Make in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’ wave, the Indian Railways just unveiled their first smart coach and there are a 100 more on the way. In collaboration with the <keyword id="6835217" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modern-Coach-Factory-Raebareli">Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli</keyword>, the ordinary Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches have been upgraded to include sensors that monitor various aspects of the carriage. Equipped with black boxes that form a multi-dimensional communication interface, it monitors critical components of the coach that are usually responsible for derailments and delays. The sensor-based on-board condition monitoring system (OBCMS) enables the timely detection of defects. According to the Indian Railways, this will help the department move from preventive maintenance to predictive maintenance in an attempt to provide ‘world-class’ facilities to passengers. What makes these coaches so smart? A <keyword id="6752987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-device">smart device</keyword> is anything that’s connected to other mechanisms or networks through Bluetooth, NFC, <keyword id="47655" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</keyword>, Li-Fi, 3G etc and can operate on its own or by interacting with other devices. In the case of the smart coach, there’s a <keyword id="604467" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Processing-Unit">central processing unit</keyword> that connects over a <keyword id="17406" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSM">GSM</keyword> network. The OBCMS is officially called the Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit, or ‘PICCU’, an industrial grade computer that monitors two aspects, coach maintenance and the passenger interface. Coach maintenance entails relaying information about the train’s health back to PICCU using a vibration-based self-powered harvesting sensor that’s placed on the axle box. The sensor is capable of predicting hard spots and defects on the railway track, the wheels of the train and the bearings. Using that information, the Indian Railways can plan for maintenance accordingly to optimise their resources on a ‘need-basis’ rather being premature or once something already goes wrong. And since the railway tracks are also monitored, the probability of line failures should decrease. The same goes for sensors fitted into the train’s air conditioning (AC) system, that will relay information about the AC condition with alerts for when repairs are required. In addition, the Water Level Indicator (WLI) technology will let PICCU know if the water level drops below sufficient levels. For passengers, there’s an integrated information system that informs them of the train’s location, the expected time of arrival and how fast the train is going. The Indian Railways already has the RailYatri app that tries to do that same thing, but currently lacks the accuracy to pull it off. More importantly, there are at least 6 CCTV cameras on board the coach to implement more stringent security measures. It’s not only about the security of passengers but also monitoring the behaviour and actions of the railway staff on-board. That being said, in case of an emergency, a talkback system has been integrated so that passengers and the train guard can communicate directly. It’s also useful in cases where direct assistance may not be feasible, and instructions can be relayed over the network. And, of course, the coach will have Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities for passengers to check-in and the browse the internet per their convenience.
