AAP MP donates entire salary for education of students

New <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword>: Delhi Chief Minister <keyword id="19901384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="arvind-kejriwal" source="keywords">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> was arrested by the <keyword id="19895344" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="enforcement-directorate" source="keywords">Enforcement Directorate</keyword> (ED) on Thursday night in an excise policy-linked money laundering case, officials said. The arrest, the first of a sitting chief minister, came hours after the Delhi High Court refused to grant protection to the <keyword id="19914482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aap" source="keywords">AAP</keyword> national convenor from any coercive action by the agency. The 55-year-old leader's arrest, amid campaign for the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections, drew angry reactions from his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Soon after the high court order, an ED team reached his residence and carried out searches. Subsequently, he was arrested, officials said. Officials said the ED would produce the chief minister before a court here on Friday and seek his custody for interrogation. As the ED officials carried out their action inside, additional Delhi Police personnel and Rapid Action Force (RAF) and CRPF teams were deployed around the chief minister's residence. The additional deployment was made as the ED sought extra security measures in anticipation of protests by AAP supporters, sources said. A large number of AAP workers and leaders gathered near the chief minister's residence and shouted slogans against the ED action. During the day, <keyword id="19895701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kejriwal" source="keywords">Kejriwal</keyword> moved the Supreme Court against the high court's order denying him any relief in the matter. The ED's action is virtually a replay of what transpired during the arrest last week of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader <keyword id="19987244" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="k-kavitha" source="keywords">K Kavitha</keyword>, who is now in ED custody in the same case. The case pertains to alleged corruption and money laundering in formulating and executing the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are in judicial custody in the case. Kejriwal's name has been mentioned multiple times in the charge sheets filed by the ED. The agency has alleged that the accused were in touch with Kejriwal for formulating the excise policy that resulted in undue benefits to them in return for which they paid kickbacks to the AAP.

New Delhi, The <keyword id="6354944" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="aam-aadmi-party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> (AAP) on Wednesday claimed unidentified men on Tuesday night opened fire on the convoy of its MLA-elect <keyword id="6391535" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="naresh-yadav">Naresh Yadav</keyword>. The party said one person was killed in the attack. AAP Rajya Sabha MP <keyword id="6360239" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanjay-singh">Sanjay Singh</keyword> told IANS that on late Tuesday night, Yadav was attacked when he was returning from temple. "The convoy of Yadav was attacked. Unidentified men opened fire at the convoy when Yadav was returning from the temple after results. A party volunteer Ashok has been killed," Singh told IANS. Singh said the a party volunteer was injured following the attack. He blamed the law and order situation in Delhi for the incident. The AAP swept the Delhi Assembly elections as it bagged 62 of 70 seats here.

AAP is leading in 92 seats in Punjab elections, Congress in 18

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)'s <keyword id="101521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhagwant-mann" source="Orion">Bhagwant Mann</keyword>, who on Thursday won the Dhuri seat with a margin of 58,206 votes, is set to become Punjab's next chief minister. AAP is heading to a landslide win in the 117-member legislative Assembly by leading at over 90 seats. In his first public address in his home town Sangrur after winning the seat and seeing the meteoric rise of the party, Mann promised to fix unemployment as his first task in office. "No government office in the state will have the photo of the Punjab CM, but will carry a portrait of B.R. Ambedkar." Mann said he will take oath as the Chief Minister in Bhagat Singh's ancestral village Khatkar Kalan and not in Raj Bhawan. "We will ensure that the youth do not have to go abroad... Within a month, you will observe changes," he added. Taking a dig at the opposition leaders, he said, "The elder Badal has lost...Captain (Amarinder Singh) Sahab has also lost. Majithia is also losing. Channi has also lost from both seats." The AAP is leading in 91 of 117 seats in the Punjab Assembly, as per the Election Commission of India (ECI) website at 1.10 p.m. The Congress was leading in 17 seats so far. For the AAP that was banking on 'Hun ek mauka Kejriwal nu (now one chance to Kejriwal)' -- arguably one of the biggest advertisement blitz campaigns -- two-time MP, Mann, took the lead as the chief minister's face. In the 2017 Assembly elections, the AAP had made inroads among Jat Sikhs by emerging as the second largest party with 20 seats, 18 of them in the Malwa region. However, it failed to make a mark in Majha and Doaba regions. Mann held his fort despite Modi wave across the country in 2019 by retaining the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat for the second time in a row. "The fight is not to save some political families but to save Punjab, the farmers, the agriculture, the industry and the youth. Owing to lack of employment and better education infrastructure, our youth is moving abroad," was the common talk of Mann in his folksy style in his elections campaigns. Formerly a popular comedian-actor, Mann, known for his trademark 'basanti' turban, a colour associated with Shaheed Bhagat Singh, has had his fair share of controversies in recent years, especially linked to his drinking habit. In these polls, AAP's vote share is estimated to be close to 42.45 per cent compared to 22.9 per cent of the Congress and 17.9 per cent of the SAD. The meteoric rise of AAP in the 2014 Parliamentary polls and then in the 2017 Assembly elections in Punjab followed by its nosedive owing to 'mass exodus' of its legislators proved a litmus test for the party in the 2022 Assembly polls in the state. Political observers say AAP was seen as the alternative to the traditional parties that had dominated Punjab's electoral space for decades. Delhi Election 2020: Gautam Gambhir, MP, cricketer and commentator, will have a lot of say during Delhi’s upcoming assembly elections

Cutting across party lines, members in the Upper House of Parliament expressed their solidarity and support to the armed forces, which are facing a standoff situation against the Chinese army in eastern Ladakh. Leader of Opposition <keyword id="6360065" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ghulam-nabi-azad">Ghulam Nabi Azad</keyword>, <keyword id="6409376" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="anand-sharma">Anand Sharma</keyword> and former defence minister A K Antony of the Congress asked the government to take efforts to restore the status quo ante of April and resolve the over-three-month-old border standoff. Some members such as Prasanna Acharya of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and <keyword id="6355496" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Raut">Sanjay Raut</keyword> of the Shiv Sena cautioned the government while entering into any agreement with China over the present situation. Referring to the recent talks between the Indian defence minister and foreign minister with their Chinese counterparts and a statement on September 11, Sharma asked: "Do we understand that the restoration of the status quo ante will remain a non-negotiable and final objective for India?" Antony sought a clarification over Singh's statement in the Upper House. "You have to clarify that sovereignty means status quo ante as on the middle of April. That is the meaning of sovereignty," he said. Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh was never a disputed site, the former defence minister said. "Even at Galwan Valley, our soldiers are now not allowed to patrol at the point at which they used to patrol earlier. In the Pangong area, in a more than eight-kilometre area they are not allowing us to patrol, the area which we used to patrol. Previously, we used to patrol till Finger 8 and now we are not being allowed to patrol till Finger 8," he added. The Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) should be allowed to patrol at the point where they used to patrol earlier, the Congress leader said. Azad said he stands with the armed forces and salute their valour. Being a citizen of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, Azad said the people from there are ready to sacrifice themselves to defend the territory and integrity of the nation. "On behalf of my party, I would say at least on this China issue, we stand with the government. There should be no compromise. They should go back to the position where they were in April," the Congress leader said. RCP Singh of the Janata Dal (United) said China is an "ungrateful' country that always follows a "policy of aggression". He suggested that the government should negotiate with the neighbouring country from a position of strength. Tiruchi Siva and P Wilson of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) expressed their solidarity with the armed forces. Raut said patience and valour are the traditions of India, but not of China. The neighbouring country has a "tradition of betrayal and we should always be careful with them," the Shiv Sena leader said. Delhi election 2020: AAP’s Gopal Rai wins a second term in Babarpur with 84,776 votes

DELHI/ BANGALORE: Within 23 days of its stunning debut in the Delhi assembly election, the appeal of <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> appears to have spread across the country, from north to south, west to east. Donations are pouring in and volunteers are lining up to join the party, including some senior corporate leaders who are chucking up prized jobs to work with <keyword id="6356115" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword>. 
 In Bangalore, V Balakrishnan, the <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> board member once seen as a future CEO, who quit the company last month, said on Wednesday he had joined AAP. In Mumbai, <keyword id="48669" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="banker">banker</keyword> Meera Sanyal, the Harvard Business School-educated head of <keyword id="65497" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Royal-Bank-of-Scotland">Royal Bank of Scotland</keyword>, has quit to join AAP. Adarsh Shastri, grandson of former Indian <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> Lal Bahadur Shastri, resigned as head of sales for Apple in western India to join Kejriwal. 
 
And donations to AAP have spiraled. On Wednesday, the party had collected almost Rs 38 lakh from online donations till 10pm. This has been the highest collection in a day so far, barring two days – one when Shanti Bhushan donated it Rs 1 crore and another day when a Singapore-based sympathizer had sent in Rs 50 lakh. 
 Until the Delhi elections, AAP was receiving on an average Rs 6-7 lakh a day. It stopped collections once it reached its target of Rs 20 crore. Fund collection resumed on December 13, when the party formally announced its intention to contest the 2014 <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections. Since then, the average collection has been around Rs 17.5 lakh a day. 
 
The number of people flocking to the party has seen a dramatic rise. Since December 8, 2013, when the Delhi election results were announced, 3.03 lakh volunteers have joined AAP across the country and over 1 lakh have become members. "These figures are of those joining online and don't include volunteers and members who have registered manually at party offices. The party's membership fee is Rs 10 but people below 18 years of age cannot become members. Similarly government officials cannot become members. Such people instead register as volunteers," said Ankit Lal, who handles AAP's online campaign. 
 One of those joining online is Balakrishnan, who was on the CEO track at Infosys before he quit. He told media on Wednesday that he had paid the Rs 10 AAP membership fee but said it was too early to talk about his role in the party. Balakrishnan's entry into AAP pits him against his long-time Infosys colleague Nandan Nilekani, who is tipped to be the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> candidate from the South Bangalore in the LS elections. Balakrishnan described AAP as the most successful startup ever by an IIT-ian and said he wanted to be part of the revolution that AAP was bringing about in the country. 
 
AAP's online campaign, managed by a young and tech-savvy team, is rarely short of ideas. The most recent — one of the reasons for the spike in collections on Wednesday – was a simple message: ‘Donate Rs 2014 in the year 2014'. Till 10pm, 1,273 people had donated Rs 2014 or more. "It started with one volunteer wanting to donate Rs 2014 to mark the New Year. We decided to put it up on the party page and it seemed to have caught the fancy of a lot of people," said Lal. 
 AAP suddenly grabbing national attention hasn't gone unnoticed by political parties, with leaders either racheting up their criticism of the newbie or acknowledging the potency of AAP's politics. On Wednesday, Congress's <keyword id="227742" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mumbai-MP">Mumbai MP</keyword> <keyword id="56431" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sanjay-Nirupam">Sanjay Nirupam</keyword> took a cue from the <keyword id="6354952" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Delhi-Government">Delhi government</keyword>'s decision to slash power tariff by threatening to launch an agitation if the <keyword id="6356172" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government">Maharashtra government</keyword> too didn't cut electricity charges. 
 In neighbouring Goa, <keyword id="5269" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Chief-Minister">chief minister</keyword> <keyword id="6363133" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Manohar-Parrikar">Manohar Parrikar</keyword> – an IIT alumnus like Kejriwal – appeared to be praising the AAP leader at a time when some of his colleagues in Delhi have sharpened their criticism of AAP, possibly because they feel more threatened by it. Parrikar said, "He (Kejriwal) has shown the right intent. Let us see if he can deliver." 
 
CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Wednesday said his party considers AAP to belong to non-Congress, non-BJP political forces — a space that CPM seeks to create and promote. He said any alliance with AAP would depend on how it evolved on the political and policy platforms, on whether it would be anti communalism and against "neo-liberal economic policies". 
 
In Ahmedabad, former BJP MLA Kanu Kalsariya, a gynaecologist who had led the agitation against Nirma's cement plant in his Gariadhar constituency, joined AAP on Wednesday. He admitted that he was about to join Congress, but now saw AAP as "a symbol of people's power." 
 There have been reports about BJP and Congress being worried by the new kid on the block. For starters, they joined hands to quickly pass the Lokpal Bill. Since then, Congress leaders like Digvijay Singh have claimed that AAP's programme was similar to that of <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>'s, while the BJP brass has reportedly met to assess the impact of AAP in the coming LS polls.

As <keyword id="6358992" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Police">Delhi Police</keyword> butt into <keyword id="6356115" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword> core committee member <keyword id="6360239" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Singh">Sanjay Singh</keyword>’s protest for Yadav’s arrest, his supporters also booed away the AAP leader. 
 
As per the media reports, Yadav, the the founder-member of farmer rights group <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Yogendra-Yadav-arrested-at-Parliament-street-police-station-complains-of-being-beaten-up/articleshow/48438383.cms">Swaraj Abhiyan</a>, was arrested on Tuesday from Jantar Mantar, where he held a protest, demanding adequate compensation for farmers affected by the land bill as well as those hit by crop loss. Singh, still, tried to meet Yadav at <keyword id="2253676" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Delhi-police">Central Delhi police</keyword> station along with other AAP supporters where Yadav supporters shouted slogans like "We don't need your support, go back." 
 
After the episode, Singh told Times Now that the party is not trying to extract mileage from the arrest to push its case against the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Delhi+Police">Delhi Police'</a>s functioning. 
 
Kejriwal has demanded direct control of the Delhi Police for the force's efficient functioning. 
 
The Chief Minister on Tuesday set aside differences with Yadav and tweeted strongly against the Delhi Police action. 
 
"I strongly condemn the treatment meted out to Yogendraji by Delhi Police," Kejriwal tweeted. 
 
"They were protesting peacefully. It is their fundamental right," the chief minister further added. 
 
Yadav claimed Delhi Police manhandled him. "I have been beaten up, manhandled, dragged, pushed and arrested at the parliament street police station," he tweeted early Tuesday along with a picture of himself.
