<ul class="summary-list"><li>Analysts believe Pakistan may be arming its JF-17 fighters with nuclear-armed cruise missiles.</li><li>Suspicions the JF-17 could be armed with nuclear missiles were speculative until a recent photo.</li></ul><p>The nuclear balance of terror between America and Russia, and now also America and China, attracts the most concern about an atomic apocalypse. But the simmering conflict between India and Pakistan — both of which are nuclear powers — is no less dangerous.</p><p>Now there are indications that Pakistan is arming its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-pakistan-jf17-may-be-most-widely-operated-combat-jet-2022-11">JF-17 fighters</a> with nuclear-capable cruise missiles. The JF-17s are replacing older French-made Mirage jets that Pakistan has tasked for nuclear strike missions, according to the <a target="_blank" href="https://fas.org/publication/pakistan-jf17-aircraft-nuclear-potential/">Federation of American Scientists</a>.</p><p>"These developments, along with heightened tensions in the region, have raised concerns about accelerated arms racing as well as new risks for escalation in a potential conflict between India and Pakistan, especially since India is also increasing the size and improving the capabilities of its nuclear arsenal," wrote FAS analyst Eliana Johns.</p><p>Not surprisingly given Pakistan's secretiveness over its nuclear program, the evidence for nuclear-armed JF-17s is somewhat circumstantial. Pakistan's current nuclear strike aircraft are the 1960s-vintage Mirage V, armed with nuclear bombs, and the Mirage III, which has been tested with the Ra'ad cruise missile, which can be armed with nuclear or conventional warheads. And a JF-17 in flight was recently photographed carrying what appears to be a Ra'ad missile.</p><p>However, the Pakistani Air Force has at least 130 of the JF-17 Thunder, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/azerbaijan-snubbed-russia-fighter-jets-for-competitors-turkey-pakistan-2024-3">joint project</a> between Pakistan and China that created a fighter <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-arms-sales-may-get-boost-from-russia-war-ukraine-2023-7">that is equivalent</a> to the US F-16 (Pakistan also operates 75 F-16s). The aircraft, designated the FC-1 Xiaolong ("Fierce Dragon") in Chinese service, first flew in 2003.</p><p>Suspicions that the JF-17 would be armed with Ra'ad missiles were mostly speculative, until a photo surfaced recently. "During rehearsals for the 2023 Pakistan Day Parade (which was subsequently canceled), an image surfaced of a JF-17 Thunder Block II carrying what was reported to be a Ra'ad ALCM," according to FAS. "Notably, this was the first time such a configuration had been observed in public."</p><p>The Federation of American Scientists "was able to purchase the original image," and compared the Ra'ad mounted on the JF-17 with previous images. One question was which version of the Ra'ad had been fitted to the JF-17. The <a target="_blank" href="https://missilethreat.csis.org/missile/hatf-8/">Ra'ad</a> I (also known as the Hatf-8) is a subsonic air-launched cruise missile with an estimated range of more than 200 miles, and corresponds to other models such as the Europe's Storm Shadow, according to the CSIS Missile Threat defense site. The newer Ra'ad II reportedly has a range of almost 400 miles. Pakistan is also developing the Taimoor, an anti-ship version of the Ra'ad.</p><p>Using tools such as Photoshop Vanishing Point to analyze the images, FAS concluded that JF-17 had been armed with the older Ra'ad I. If true, this would put numerous targets within western and northern India within range of nuclear or conventional cruise missiles.</p><p>"There are several air bases in Pakistan located near the border," Johns told Business Insider. "The aircraft would be able to scramble and fly to dispersal bases within Pakistan's borders to get closer to potential targets inside India at a range of 350 to 600 kilometers if desired."</p><p>There is still considerable uncertainty about the exact capabilities of the Ra'ad. "Observing the differences between the Ra'ad-I and Ra'ad-II missiles raises a few questions," FAS noted. "How was Pakistan able to nearly double the range of the Ra'ad from an estimated 350 kilometers to 550 kilometers and then to 600 kilometers for the newest version without noticeably changing the size of the missile to carry more fuel? The answer could possibly be that the Ra'ad-II engine design is more efficient, the construction components are made from lighter-weight materials or the payload has been reduced."</p><p>Thus for now, Pakistan's air-launched cruise missile capability will remain a mystery. It is "unclear whether either of the Ra'ad systems has been deployed, but this may only be a question of when rather than if," FAS said. "Once deployed, it remains to be seen if Pakistan will also continue to retain a nuclear gravity bomb capability for its aircraft or transition to stand-off cruise missiles only."</p><p>And though the JF-17 is a joint Sino-Pakistani aircraft, Johns doubts that China will try to restrain Pakistan from modifying it into a nuclear strike aircraft. "China and Pakistan have enjoyed economic and technical partnership for a long time," Johns said. "It is suspected that Pakistan received a blueprint for its first nuclear device from China. The JF-17s were not built for a nuclear mission in the Chinese air force. Nonetheless, Pakistan seems to be preparing it for this capability since the Mirage III and V aircraft are aging."</p><p>Pakistan's main delivery system for its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/countries-with-nuclear-weapons-2017-11">estimated 170 nuclear weapons </a>will continue to be ballistic missiles, which include at least six models of road-mobile rockets. But extending the range of Pakistani aerial nuclear weapons will only exacerbate the potential for nuclear war. Both Pakistan and India are already developing multiple warhead, or MIRV, versions of their ballistic missiles, and Pakistan is working on short-range, dual-use ballistic missiles. India and Pakistan have fought four wars — and numerous border clashes — since the Indian subcontinent was partitioned in 1947. In 2019, Pakistan made veiled <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pakistan-clings-to-nukes-after-embarrassing-air-strikes-by-india-2019-2">nuclear threats</a> after Indian aircraft bombed Kashmiri militant bases in Pakistan.</p><p>"This context presents an even greater need for transparency and understanding about the quality and intentions behind states' nuclear programs to prevent mischaracterization and misunderstanding," Johns concluded.</p><p><em>Michael Peck is a defense writer whose work has appeared in Forbes, Defense News, Foreign Policy magazine, and other publications. Vizio is discounting a handful of great 4K TVs up to 75 inches - save up to $200 for a limited time

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="11893746" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="indian-air-force" source="Orion">Indian air force</keyword> is in the midst of a massive modernization and expansion effort.</li><li><keyword id="11892747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> has focused on archrival <keyword id="11893449" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword> for decades, but it is now contending with a much larger foe: <keyword id="11892748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword>.</li></ul><p>Earlier this month, at the end of India's annual Independence Day parade in New Delhi, the Indian Air Force showed off its aircraft inventory in multiple flyovers of the Rajpath, a ceremonial boulevard in the capital.</p><p>The flyovers included transport aircraft, helicopter gunships, fighters, and fighter-bombers. It was the latest show of force for a military branch that, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/after-himalayan-clash-india-prepares-navy-to-take-on-china-2021-6" target="_top">like its naval counterpart</a>, is in the midst of a massive modernization and expansion effort.</p><p>Focused for decades on the threat from archrival Pakistan, India is now preparing its air force to fight another much larger foe: China.</p><p>With roughly 2,000 combat aircraft from its air force and navy, China has the largest aviation force in Asia and the third largest in the world. Worse for India, China's increasingly close relationship with Pakistan is <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2021/07/the-china-pakistan-partnership-continues-to-deepen/" target="_top">resulting in closer military cooperation</a>, including joint development of fighter jets.</p><p>Faced with the potential for an air war against two enemies, the IAF is increasing its size and capabilities.</p><h2>A significant inventory</h2><div type="image" title="Indian MiG-29 fighter jet" height="1116" width="2000" msid="85853169" hostid="261"></div><p>With well over 1,000 aircraft itself, the IAF is by no means small. Since India's independence, it has mostly fielded Russian aircraft made entirely in Russia or licensed for local production.</p><p>Even today, the biggest fleets in the IAF inventory are those of the <keyword id="12004876" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mig-21" source="Orion">MiG-21</keyword>, MiG-29, and the <a href="https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/su-30mki-multirole-fighter-aircraft-india/" target="_top">Su-30MKI</a> - a version of Russia's Su-30 made specifically for and by India. (India signed a contract for the Su-30MKI in the 1990s and has built more than 200 of them domestically since the mid-2000s.)</p><p>The service also has some European models, such as SEPECAT Jaguars and Mirage 2000s, which are the IAF's <a href="https://www.airforcemag.com/article/0912kargil/" target="_top">primary strike platforms</a>. But those aircraft, which were acquired in the 1980s, are showing signs of age, and the IAF plans to retire them by 2030.</p><p>India's MiG-21s, first introduced in the 1960s, are also expected to be retired by 2030 - even the modernized MiG-21 Bison models. The jet has <a href="https://theprint.in/defence/11-down-in-5-yrs-3-in-2021-but-many-in-iaf-still-swear-by-mig-21s-despite-its-safety-record/663813/" target="_top">a poor safety record</a>; as of 2013, more than 480 of India's MiG-21s had been involved in accidents that had caused over 200 deaths.</p><h2>Threats on two fronts</h2><div type="image" title="Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI" height="800" width="1200" msid="85853174" hostid="261"></div><p>The Su-30MKI purchase was more than just a general upgrade. It came after the Pakistan Air Force in 1982 accepted the first of 28 US-made F-16s, which seriously increased the PAF's capabilities a decade after it <a href="http://www.indiandefencereview.com/spotlights/1971-air-war-battle-for-air-supremacy/" target="_top">last fought</a> the IAF.</p><p>The US <a href="https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/pakistan%E2%80%99s-long-controversial-love-affair-f-16-fighting-falcon-47682" target="_top">paused</a> F-16 deliveries in 1990 because of Pakistan's nuclear program, but they resumed in 2005, and the PAF now has some 75 F-16s. Their use is <a href="https://warontherocks.com/2020/08/how-americas-experience-with-pakistan-can-help-it-deal-with-turkey/" target="_top">conditional and closely monitored</a> by the US, but Pakistan would likely have no qualms about using them in an all-out war.</p><p>In 2019, a <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/26836/we-cut-through-the-conflicting-claims-and-misinformation-surrounding-indias-strikes-on-pakistan" target="_top">series of skirmishes</a> between India and Pakistan included airstrikes on each other's territory and resulted in one MiG-21 Bison being shot down by PAF fighters, possibly by an F-16. It was the first time since 1971 that air attacks had been conducted across the Line of Control.</p><p>During the Cold War, China sold Pakistan its J-6 and J-7 fighters, which were Chinese copies of Russia's MiG-19 and MiG-21. The PAF has also benefitted from Pakistan's closer ties with China in recent years.</p><div type="image" title="India Kashmir MiG-21 Bison crash" height="998" width="1400" msid="85853179" hostid="261"></div><p>Their air forces <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/International-relations/Indo-Pacific/China-and-Pakistan-conduct-joint-air-drills-with-eye-on-India" target="_top">re</a><a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Politics/International-relations/Indo-Pacific/China-and-Pakistan-conduct-joint-air-drills-with-eye-on-India" target="_top">gularly</a> conduct joint <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202101/1211811.shtml" target="_top">exercises</a>, and they have even jointly developed a fourth-generation multirole combat aircraft, the <a href="https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/fc1xiaolongjf17thund/" target="_top">JF-17</a>, of which Pakistan has over 100.</p><p>China and Pakistan are now <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/china-pakistan-upgrading-fighter-aircraft-used-against-indian-air-force-report/story-BS87X5ux3Xaj8QqS6jtssN.html" target="_top">planning</a> upgrades to Pakistan's JF-17 fleet, and China has <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/chinese-pla-tries-to-psyche-indian-army-by-supplying-armed-drones-to-pak/story-tySb4UnKimFUYIxJdP3xGL.html" target="_top">announced</a> the sale of 50 <a href="https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/wing-loong-unmanned-aerial-vehicle-uav/" target="_top">Wing Loong II combat drones</a> to Pakistan. Pakistan may also <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2020/05/is-the-chinese-jh-7-an-answer-to-the-pakistan-air-forces-deep-strike-needs/" target="_top">acquire</a> Chinese strike aircraft.</p><p>China's own air force also poses a threat to the IAF. Particularly worrying for India are the <a href="http://www.military-today.com/aircraft/j10.htm" target="_top">J-10</a> and <a href="http://www.military-today.com/aircraft/j11.htm" target="_top">J-11</a> fighters and the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2020/08/17/chinese-stealth-fighters-head-west-to-confront-india/?sh=5f36556a1b85" target="_top">J-20</a> stealth fighter.</p><p>The aerial threat from China was abundantly clear after last year's deadly standoff along its disputed border with India.</p><p>India has a longer history of air operations in the area, but China is <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/41065/tracking-chinas-sudden-airpower-expansion-along-its-western-border" target="_top">rapidly building and expanding</a> air bases and defenses along its western borders.</p><h2>A major modernization</h2><div type="image" title="Indian Air Force Rafale fighter jet" height="1333" width="2000" msid="85853182" hostid="261"></div><p>Appreciating the threats, the IAF has committed to modernization.</p><p>In 2016, India signed a contract with French firm Dassault Aviation four 36 Rafale multirole fighters. Twenty-six of them have been <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/india-has-received-26-rafale-aircraft-till-date-govt/article35585665.ece" target="_top">delivered</a> so far, and some have <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/indian-air-force-deploys-first-rafales-in-east-to-counter-china-121072900013_1.html" target="_top">already been deployed</a> to counter possible Chinese aggression.</p><p>The IAF has also purchased 15 CH-47 Chinook helicopters and 22 AH-64 Apache gunships, both of which have also been <a href="https://theprint.in/defence/iaf-deploys-apache-attack-helicopters-and-chinooks-in-ladakh-increases-combat-air-patrols/445072/" target="_top">deployed</a> to the border region.</p><p>India has developed its own lightweight <keyword id="12004878" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="fighter-jet" source="Orion">fighter jet</keyword>, the <a href="https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/tejas/" target="_top">HAL Tejas</a>, and has about 20 in service. The original order for 40 fighters was supplemented by <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/rs-48000-crore-landmark-deal-india-clears-purchase-of-83-tejas-jets-for-iaf/articleshow/80251469.cms" target="_top">an additional order</a> of 83 improved Tejas Mark 1A variants, with a second production line <a href="https://theprint.in/defence/govt-clears-rs-48000-cr-deal-for-83-tejas-mk-1a-all-you-want-to-know-about-the-aircraft/584743/" target="_top">built</a> to speed up production.</p><p>To meet its needs in the near-term, India is <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/after-tejas-india-moves-ahead-to-procure-more-mig-29s-sukhois/articleshow/80320199.cms" target="_top">buying</a> another 21 MiG-29s and 12 Su-30MKIs. It is also <a href="https://tass.com/defense/1316503" target="_top">upgrading</a> its MiG-29 fleet and modifying its Su-30MKIs to be able to fire Brahmos cruise missiles.</p><div type="image" title="Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet" height="1326" width="2000" msid="85853185" hostid="261"></div><p>The IAF is also seeking 114 medium multirole combat aircraft.</p><p>The US-made F/A-18E/F and F-15, the French-built Rafale, the European-made Eurofighter Typhoon, and Russia's MiG-35 and Su-35 - all twin-engine jets - are in the running, as are the single-engine Swedish-built JAS 39 Gripen and US-built F-21, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lockheed-martin-unveils-f21-fighter-jet-to-compete-for-india-contract-2019-2" target="_top">version of the F-16</a> designed specifically for India.</p><p>India also has a number of high-profile domestic projects in development. It plans to fly a prototype from its own <a href="https://eurasiantimes.com/indias-5th-gen-aircraft-iaf-to-model-its-amca-on-us-f-35s-instead-of-j-20-or-su-57-jets-experts/" target="_top">fifth-generation stealth fighter program</a> by 2025 and recently <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/nation/hal-announces-unmanned-fighter-jet-207899" target="_top">unveiled</a> an unmanned fighter jet program.</p><p>India has relied on foreign suppliers for much of its military hardware - especially <a href="https://www.theweek.in/news/india/2021/07/21/russia-sees-india-as-prospective-buyer-for-checkmate-jet-but-will-iaf-want-it.html" target="_top">Russia</a>, with which it has a longstanding but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-s400-purchase-risks-us-sanctions-amid-competition-with-china-2021-5" target="_top">increasingly fraught</a> relationship - but many of the new acquisition efforts will require some degree of local production as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" program aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing.</p><p>Amid ongoing tensions with China and <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/china-pakistan-india-jockey-position-afghanistans-new-great-game-2021-08-23/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">renewed uncertainty</a> about the future in Afghanistan, India's efforts to expand and modernize its air force show how serious it is about countering the threat from its two most contentious neighbors.</p>

India is updating its air force for a modern war, and China isn't its only concern

<p>After a failed Stoke clearance, Lowton controlled the ball his chest, directed it down to his foot, and then fired a lightning bolt into the far corner of the goal.</p>
<p>Notice that after Aston Villa takes the corner kick, the ball doesn't touch the ground until it hits the back of the net.</p>

Using the F-35 and the S-400 together could compromise the F-35 and expose sensitive information.</p><p>Turkey plans to buy roughly 100 F-35s and has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turkey-held-a-bizarre-ceremony-for-its-f-35s-but-it-might-not-get-them-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">already received two</a> of them. The country's defense industry has also taken an active role in the jet's development, with <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-23/f-35-transfers-to-turkey-held-back-under-u-s-defense-measure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">at least 10</a> Turkish companies building parts for it.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5a3012930b0f27d6258b4737-1240/russian military s-400.jpg" border="0" alt="Russian military S 400" data-mce-source="Reuters" data-mce-caption="Russian S-400 Triumph/SA-21 Growler medium-range and long-range surface-to-air missile systems drive during the Victory Day parade at Red Square in Moscow, Russia, May 9, 2015." /><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">S-400 Triumph surface-to-air missile systems taking part in the Victory Day parade at Red Square in Moscow, May 9, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>But the measure agreed upon by the House and Senate Armed Services Committees on Monday would bar Ankara from getting any more F-35s until the Pentagon delivers a report on how the measure would affect US-Turkey relations, what impact Turkey's purchase of the S-400 will have, and what the effects of Turkey's removal from the F-35 program would be for the US industrial base, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-07-23/f-35-transfers-to-turkey-held-back-under-u-s-defense-measure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Bloomberg.</p><p>The bill also includes a statement calling on Turkey to release "<a href="https://www.defensenews.com/congress/2018/07/23/hardware-end-strength-russia-and-china-sanctions-heres-the-deal-lawmakers-reached-on-the-huge-defense-policy-bill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrongfully detained</a>" US citizens Andrew Brunson and Serkan Golge.</p><p>The Defense Department has 90 days to submit its assessment. The defense bill, which allots $717 billion for fiscal year 2019, still needs final approval; the House is <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/defense-national-security/congress-moves-to-suspend-f-35-sales-to-turkey-in-defense-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expected</a> to vote this week and the Senate could do so in early August.</p><p>Mattis also urged Congress not to block Turkey from acquiring the F-35, telling legislators <a href="https://www.defensenews.com/congress/2018/07/23/jim-mattis-warns-congress-not-to-block-turkey-from-f-35-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a letter earlier this month</a> that doing so would cause an international "supply chain disruption" that could cause delays and additional costs.</p><p>"If the Turkish supply chain was disrupted today, it would result in an aircraft production break, delaying delivery of 50-75 F-35s, and would take approximately 18-24 months to re-source parts and recover," Mattis said.</p><p>In the letter, Mattis said the Trump administration was pressuring Turkey over the S-400 as well as the detention of US citizens on charges the US has called exaggerated. He also acknowledged <keyword id="6355470" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="law">law</keyword>makers' concerns with Turkey's "authoritarian drift and its impact on human rights and the rule of law."</p><p>Mattis has cautioned lawmakers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-going-with-russia-s-400-missile-deal-despite-us-sanctions-risk-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">against sanctions on other partners</a>, like India or Vietnam, for buying Russian weapons, including the S-400, arguing that they need to time to shift away from that weaponry. Erdogan has also expressed frustration with the EU over its response to a coup attempt against him in 2016 and accused the bloc of "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/turkey-agreed-to-buy-russias-s-400-missle-system-concerns-about-nato-2017-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">messing us about</a>" on issues like visas and Syrian migrants.</p><p>The US's support for Kurdish fighters in Syria has also created tension with Turkey, which recently said <a href="http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-tells-us-delegation-it-will-not-implement-iran-sanctions-134928" target="_blank" rel="noopener">it would not</a> abide by Washington's request that other countries stop buying oil from Iran.</p><p>While tensions with NATO may push Ankara to consider new relationships, it remains closely entwined with the trans-Atlantic defense alliance and its defense industry is <a href="https://www.defenseone.com/ideas/2018/06/turkey-crisis-allies/149203/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reliant</a> on Western firms. I visited the hotspot in September to see what all the hype was about.</p><p>The city certainly gives millennials what they want when traveling: an affordable experience that has great nightlife and restaurants, and is - perhaps above all - Instagrammable.</p><p>While I would recommend Lisbon to anyone thinking about booking a trip, there are four things they should know before buying that plane ticket.</p><h2>1. The city is bigger than it looks on a map.</h2><p>I was warned to bring a pair of walking shoes for Lisbon's extreme hills. "It's like San Francisco," I was told multiple times.</p><p>I didn't realize how big the city actually was. It looked pretty compact on the map, but some of the city's neighborhoods were more spread out than I anticipated. In retrospect, I should have known better, considering that Lisbon is <a href="https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/biggest-cities-in-portugal.html">Portugal's largest city</a>. </p><p>That Lisbon runs far and wide is compounded by the fact that there are, indeed, many hills. There are also many winding alleyways. This is something I always try to do, but I booked and planned my trip about six weeks in advance. By the time I booked an Airbnb, the ones located in the center within my budget were unavailable. (But be warned: If you do stay in the center, you'll likely have to drag your suitcase up some steep stairs. Shoulder season has its perks - but also its drawbacks. </h2><p>June through August is prime season for visiting Lisbon (as with most European cities). <a href="https://travel.usnews.com/Lisbon_Portugal/When_To_Visit/">US News &amp; World Report</a> recommends going during shoulder season - March through May or September through October - for cheaper rates, fewer tourists, and warm weather.</p><p>I have to agree on all those points except for the latter. Our Airbnb was around €66 per night ($72) - split with my friend over the course of three nights, I ended up paying just under €100 ($110). It was the time of year when there's a 15-degree difference during the day and you just don't know how to dress to stay comfortable. The temperature was in the early 60s (°F) in the morning and late 70s (°F) in the afternoon.</p><p>What really got me was the wind. It felt nice in the sun - I broke a sweat exploring in the afternoon - but in the shade, the wind was so strong that it immediately felt chilly. It was even stronger near the coast: A windy, sunny 75°F day - weather I bounce around in jacket-free at home in New York City - had me shivering.</p><p>You'll definitely need a tank top - and a jacket.</p><h2>3. It's an easy place to travel if English is your only language.</h2><p>Lisbon is very English-friendly.</p><p>I started this trip out in Madrid, Spain. While there were some signs and menus in English, and many Spaniards seemed to know at least a little bit of English, it was a sharp contrast from Lisbon.</p><p>For example, the metro in Madrid didn't have an English option, but the one in Lisbon did. That makes a big difference when getting around in a foreign country. I went on a sunset cruise of the city, and the deckhand was so fluent in English he sounded American.</p><p>All the restaurants I went to in Lisbon offered menus with an English version (as well as a few other languages). My travel friend, who lived in Madrid for three years, also commented on the difference between the two cities.</p><p>This is not to say that Lisbon or Madrid is a better travel destination than the other. My point is just that if you want to explore a foreign destination or experience a new culture but are uncomfortable with language barriers, Lisbon is a good place to go.</p><h2>4. The recommended day trip isn't as great as you think.</h2><p>Browse Trip Advisor, Yelp, any forum thread, or my <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lisbon-portugal-travel-guide-millennials-favorite-destinations-2019-8">previous article on Lisbon travel tip</a>s, and you'll come across recommendations to take a day trip to Sintra, home of the "fairytale castle."</p><p>Let me tell you something: The castle in question, Pena Palace, certainly looks like it's from the pages of a storybook - but it is not all it's cracked up to be.</p><p>My friend and I arrived in Sintra around 10 a.m. We thought it would be wise to get there early, before the crowds showed up. We waited over an hour to get inside the palace and tour it.</p><p>My friend and I were both annoyed with the wait, but she brought up a good point - it may have been better received if there were fine print on the ticket or website saying that a wait is likely. It would have allowed tourists to better plan their day accordingly.</p><p>It was a cool experience, but I wouldn't do it again. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55bf8d302acae716008bc7af-694-521/screen shot 2015-08-03 at 11.45.40 am.png" alt="Bentley Bentayga" data-mce-source="YouTube/Bentley" /><p class="source"><span>YouTube/Bentley</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Bentley's Bentayga SUV is coming soon.</p><p>Prior to its arrival in showrooms next year, the British luxury auto maker is putting its Bentayga prototypes through the ringer on a variety of off road surfaces. </p><p>After all, if Bentley wants its SUV to be taken seriously by Range Rover and Mercedes G-Wagon buyers, it's got to establish some off-roading "street" cred.</p><p>Recently, the VW Group brand released a series of videos chronicling the Bentayga's development process - including off-road testing in Northern Spain, cold-weather testing in Sweden, and extreme-desert testing in Dubai.</p><p>In Sweden, Bentley exposed the SUV to ice-covered roads and temperatures as low as 1.75° F.</p><p>On Dubai's Big Red Dunes, engineers put the Bentayga through its paces in 113° F temperatures. </p><p>Admittedly, much of the testing documented in these videos is a far cry from the extremes of the Dakar Rally, considered by many to be the toughest race in the world. </p><p>However, it should be noted that the most of these vehicles will never encounter terrain more strenuous than a grassy lawn or rush hour on pothole-strewn roads. </p><p>Regardless of off-road ability, the Bentley Bentayga is already looking like a hot seller, even though the company has not actually reveled the final design of the SUV.</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55bf9c9a371d22a10e8bc1e6-1024-768/bentley bentayga .jpg" alt="Bentley Bentayga " data-mce-source="Bentley" /><p class="source"><span>Bentley</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>According to Chairman Wolfgang Durheimer, prospective buyers may have to wait to get their hands on one. And they may have to wait a while.</span></p><p><span><span>We are building 3,600 Bentaygas in the first year, and there's more demand than that for the vehicle just in America," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bentley-bentayga-is-selling-fast-so-buyers-will-have-to-get-inline-2015-4" target="_blank">Durheimer told Business Insider </a>earlier this year at the New York Auto Show. </span></span></p><p><span><span>According to<a href="http://bentayga.bentleymotors.com/en/the-new-bentley-suv/see-performance.html" target="_blank"> Bentley</a>, power for the SUV will come from a VW-Group-sourced W12 engine, similar to the ones found under the hood of the Continental GT and Flying Spur limo.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>The Bentayga - named after a rock formation in the Canary Islands - will be Bentley's entry into the new hyper-luxury SUV segment. In addition to the Bentley, Rolls-Royce is enterting the market with its - as yet unnamed- "<span>high-sided, all-terrain motor car." Although, it's known as</span> "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/behold-the-first-rolls-royce-suv-prototype-is-here--and-its-the-beast-we-expected-to-see-2015-4" target="_blank">Project Cullinan</a>" within the company.  </span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Lamborghini will soon introduce its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lamborghini-111-million-italian-government-to-build-urus-suv-2015-5" target="_blank">Italian-built Urus SUV</a> while Jaguar is currently road testing prototypes of its own luxury SUV- the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jaguar-land-rover-f-pace-detroit-auto-show-2015-2015-1" target="_blank">F-PACE</a>. </span></span></span></p><p>At the end of the day, this shouldn't really be a surprise. SUVs - especially luxury SUVs - offer some of the highest margins in the auto business. Bentley is proving that its Bentayga SUV can take on Range Rover and Mercedes

<p>His explanation wasn't the clearest thing I'd ever heard, and I said so in a post covering the press conference. In response to my post, Kirk Hackett, a retired physicist who worked for the Air Force emailed me to explain exactly how the Patriots balls could have deflated even when the Colts balls did not.</p>
<p>It basically comes down to this: The Patriots do something to prepare the balls. Their preparation increases the PSI by 1 pound. Over time that PSI would naturally deflate by a pound once the preparation is done. But, the Patriots hand the ball to the refs who artificially let out 1 pound. So, then the ball naturally loses a pound of PSI, then the ball is underinflated. </p>
<p>Make of that what you will!</p>
<p>Hackett emailed me his credentials after I asked for them. He says, "<span>As far as I go, you might be able to google me. I am retired and used to work at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Directed Energy. At one time, I was President of the Directed Energy Professional Society. <span>As far as academic credentials go, my Bachelors with a physics major is from Dartmouth (1977), and my PhD in Physics is from MIT (1983).  I could dig my diplomas out of the closet, but that is a bit of a hassle."</span></span></p>
<p>Here is the full email:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>Dear Sir,</span><br><br><span>As a physicist, and having listened to Belichick's press conference earlier today, I can tell that what he said made a lot of sense from a scientist's point of view.</span><br><br><span>When the football is rubbed and squeezed, work is being done on the ball, and it will get hotter.  If you want, describe the heating as due to friction.  When the rubbing stops, the ball will cool back to the environmental temperature.  The time constant for cooling depends basically on the materials used in the ball, but pigskin is likely a very poor thermal conductor, which would mean longer times, other things being equal.</span><br><br><span>The air inside the ball, only a few grams in weight, will equilibrate with the walls of the football quite rapidly - seconds.</span><br><br><span>If the ball is still warmer than the environment when given to the referees, then they will be deflating the ball back to the requested 12.5 psi.  By the way, just inflating the ball with a pump adds some heat to it.  That is because the air is squeezed until the pressure in the pump is higher than the pressure in the ball before the air goes into the ball.  The squeezing heats the air, quite a bit, but the air doesn't have a lot of mass.</span><br><br><span>So, now when the ball equilibrates with the environment, by cooling, the pressure will decrease, according to the Ideal Gas Law, particularly if the environment is significantly less warm than the environment where the ball was inflated and then checked by the referees.  Obviously, it was a lot colder on the football field, and got even colder later in the evening.</span><br><br><span>This scenario, in my professional opinion, completely explains the data that has been reported.</span><br><br><span>Differences with the balls used by the Colts could easily be explained by different preparation procedures, or even longer waits between preparation and the referee check.  Especially if the the Colts QB, Luck, likes higher initial ball pressure - as has been reported.</span><br><br><span>Now, I have something bad to say about the media.  You pinheads have been convicting Belichick and Brady without the facts or doing an investigation.</span><br><br><span>Some of you have even gone so far as to demand the Patriots be disqualified from the Super Bowl.  Others have called Brady and/or Belichick a liar.</span><br><br><span>One of your colleagues at BI, Tony Manfred, is a prime offender.</span><br><br><span>In a just world, you the media, would be apologizing or get sued for everything you own.  This was obviously done with malicious intent.  Unfortunately, one of the more unjust aspects of press freedom is that the media is shielded from being sued by public figures.  That leaves the media free, except by their own restraint, to lie, sensationalize, and slander.  I have been noticing less and less restraint by the media.</span><br><br><span>At the bottom of this message is a  simple calculation on the ball pressure, just moving it from inside to outside that I did a few days ago. Hackett, PhD</span><br><span>Physicist</span><br><br><span>I wrote the following last Wednesday:</span><br><br><span>There has been a fair amount of bad comment about whether temperature can account for the observed football deflation in the AFC Championship game.</span><br><br><span>Many of the calculations just use the pressure measured by a gauge on the ball, but this is a mistake.  You need to account for the fact that the measurement is a gauge measurement, not an absolute measurement of pressure.</span><br><br><span>This is the argument:</span><br><br><span>If the balls were initially inflated to 12.5 psi (the minimum) in a locker room at 75 F, then the pressure inside the balls at 45 F (like at halftime on the field) would be about 11 psi - already down by 2 psi from the nominal 13 psi inflation pressure.  The calculation is trivial, uses the Ideal Gas Law, the fact that the pressure measurements are gauge measurements (relative to the base atmospheric pressure, (I used 14.7 psi for the base atmospheric pressure)), not absolute pressure measurements, and assume the football volume doesn't change.</span><br><br><span>Additionally, each pressure measurement takes a little air out of the ball, and multiple measurements can also significantly reduce the pressure.  Cyclists understand this.</span><br><br><span>Given the multiple pressure measurements that were made, plus natural leakage due to rough play, plus temperature differences, all this could very easily result in more than a 2 psi pressure drop, measured at or near field conditions.</span><br><br><span>Here are the numbers:</span><br><br><span>75 F = 297 Kelvin (Need to use absolute temperatures)</span><br><span>45 F = 280.4 Kelvin</span><br><br><span>280.4/297 = the absolute pressure ratio = (X +14.7)/(12.5 + 14.7)</span><br><br><span>Where X is the gauge measurement of the ball pressure at the field temperature, 45 F.</span><br><br><span>X = 10.98 psi.</span><br><br><span>2 psi less than the nominal 13 psi.  Just from temperature differences.</span><br><br><span>There have also been reports that the balls weighed less.  Ridiculous.  Air doesn't weigh much.  You would have to weigh the balls to a couple of tenths of a percentage, and you couldn't do that by just hefting the balls.</span><br><br><span>Why don't you report this and send it along to the NFL, too.
