Airtel accelerates 5G revolution by re-farming mid-band spectrum to meet surging demand, enhance browsing speed

Just ahead of its mega <keyword id="20008249" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPO" source="keywords">FPO</keyword> opening to <keyword id="21332860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-investors" source="keywords">public investors</keyword>, <keyword id="19899016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea" source="keywords">Vodafone Idea</keyword> (<keyword id="20062540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vil" source="keywords">VIL</keyword>) has announced closure of its anchor book allocation, raising about Rs 5,400 crore from marquee global as well as domestic investors, according to a statutory filing by the <keyword id="20132985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telco" source="keywords">telco</keyword>. This could be the third-largest anchor book after One 97 Communications and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC). One 97 Communications and LIC had raised Rs 8,235 crore and Rs 5,627 crore in the anchor round, respectively. In a notification to the exchanges on Wednesday, VIL said it has allotted 490.9 crore shares to 74 funds at Rs 11 apiece, which is also the upper end of the price band. This translated into a transaction size to Rs 5,400 crore. Of the total allocation to <keyword id="21330641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anchor-investors" source="keywords">anchor investors</keyword>, 79.52 crore stocks, or 16.2 per cent of the total, were allocated to five domestic mutual fund through a total of 11 schemes. Those who were allotted shares include GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund, Fidelity, UBS Fund Management, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Australian Super, Troo Capital, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup Global Markets Mauritius, and Jupiter Fund Management. Additionally, domestic investors, including Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, SBI General Insurance and Quant Mutual Fund, were allocated shares in the anchor round. The Rs 18,000-crore FPO of Vodafone Idea will open for public subscription on April 18 and conclude on April 22, marking the biggest FPO in the country. The price band has been set at Rs 10-11 per share. Prior to this, the largest FPO in the Indian market was a Rs 15,000 crore share-sale by YES Bank in 2020. The fundraise would give the ailing telco the firepower to improve its positioning in the Indian telecom market, where it currently trails larger rivals such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, by a wide margin. The funds will also help VIL shore up finances for the much-delayed <keyword id="20366727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-rollout" source="keywords">5G rollout</keyword> and strengthening 4G services, and payment of vendor dues. On April 6, the VIL Board approved raising Rs 2,075 crore from promoter Aditya Birla Group and increasing its authorised share capital to Rs 1 lakh crore. Earlier this year, Vodafone Idea had outlined plans to raise Rs 45,000 crore through a mix of equity and debt as it looked to match services offered by rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel and arrest an alarming and prolonged subscriber churn. VIL has also been fighting a desperate battle for survival, saddled with debt of Rs 2.1 lakh crore and quarterly losses. According to Trai data, Vodafone Idea continued to bleed on the subscriber front. VIL lost 15.2 lakh wireless subscribers, plunging its mobile subscriber base to 22.15 crore in January, in sharp contrast to subscriber gains by Jio and Airtel.

Median mobile download speeds in India increased from 33.30 Mbps in March to 36.35 Mbps in April, according to network intelligence and connectivity insights provider Ookla. Overall, India showed improvement in its global ranking for median fixed broadband speeds, moving from the 84th position in March to the 83rd position in April. The country's performance in fixed median download speeds witnessed a slight increase from 50.71 Mbps in March to 51.12 Mbps in April. Qatar led the chart for global median mobile speeds, whereas Senegal jumped 16 spots in rank globally. For overall global fixed median speeds, Bahrain registered the highest increase in rank, jumping by 14 spots globally, with Singapore sustaining the first spot this month as well. In January, India ranked at 69th position globally in median mobile speeds, while, in February, India ranked at 67th position. Meanwhile, Qualcomm is rolling out 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) in collaboration with Reliance Jio to serve millions of residents in India, the chip-maker's President and CEO Cristiano Amon has said, as the country doubles down on providing 5G services to all by the end of the year. With the roll-out of 5G in India, the global chip-maker had bolstered its efforts with Reliance Jio to help it fast connect 100 million homes through its 5G FWA, including the millimetre wave (mmWave). India sees 4-spot jump in median mobile speeds globally

State-owned <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> will start rolling out <keyword id="21279641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-services" source="keywords">4G services</keyword> across the country from August, using completely indigenous technology in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar" policy, according to official sources. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. Telecom regulator <keyword id="19942079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Trai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Trai">Trai</keyword> in a recent paper explained core as part of a network that offers the functionality of aggregation, call control, switching, authentication, charging, gateway functionality, etc. TCS, Tejas Networks and government-owned ITI have bagged orders worth about Rs 19,000 crore from BSNL for deploying 4G network which is upgradable to 5G. In a recent earnings call, Tejas Networks Executive Director and chief operating officer Arnob Roy said BSNL's mobile network is getting deployed across zones. He said that wherever the C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is getting integrated to the existing core. "When the C-DOT core gets deployed in those circles, in those zones, they will get parented to the C-DOT core as well. Tejas Networks Limited. This is just a temporary situation where the RAN (radio access network) is deployed and in that zone, the core is not available," Roy said. BSNL is in the process of deploying 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and <keyword id="20041753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-services" source="keywords">5G services</keyword> across India. "The company has installed over 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, out of which more than 6,000 are active in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP West and Haryana circle. BSNL has been selling 4G capable SIM only for the last 4-5 years. Only those customers who have older SIM will need to get new SIM to experience the service," a BSNL official said. According to an analysis of reports by <keyword id="1072571" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ieee-spectrum" source="Orion">IEEE Spectrum</keyword> (the world's leading engineering magazine) made to <keyword id="6360409" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="nasa" source="Orion">NASA</keyword>'s Aviation Safety Reporting System (<keyword id="4895378" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="asrs" source="Orion">ASRS</keyword>), complaints of malfunctioning and failing altimeters soared after the rollout earlier this year of high-speed 5G wireless networks, which use similar C-band frequencies. In January this year, at least three flights above Tennessee in the US simultaneously experienced altimeter errors that made it "impossible to maintain assigned altitude", according to one of the pilots. One jet lost its autopilot completely, and reportedly had fire trucks waiting for it on landing. According to the report, in February, a passenger plane on approach to the Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans experienced erratic low-altitude warnings as it flew below 1,000 feet. In March, a commercial jet landing on autopilot at Los Angeles International Airport suddenly went into an aggressive descent just 100 feet above the ground. All three incidents - and many more this year -- were linked by pilots to problems with the aircraft's radio altimeters, according to the report. "Between January and May, there were 93 reports of faulty or failing radar altimeters, where a normal year might see only a handful," according to ASRS, a public database maintained by NASA. ASRS contains at least 40 reports of possible 5G interference in the vicinity of the 50 airports with buffer zones. With six reports, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport had the most complaints. The <keyword id="50980" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="us-federal-aviation-administration" source="Orion">US Federal Aviation Administration</keyword> (<keyword id="137685" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="faa" source="Orion">FAA</keyword>) has reviewed over half of the reports and was unable to rule out 5G interference in around 80 incidents. According to the report, the FAA "did provide high-level data that indicates it has received around 550 such submissions since January". The FAA concluded that the mitigations it had agreed with wireless providers "are working". In June, it agreed with the carriers to extend those mitigations for another year. The US FAA had initially played down concerns that the new cell towers and devices might interfere with commercial jet radar altimeters, which operate a few hundred megahertz higher in the radio spectrum. In the US, wireless providers led by <keyword id="6393116" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="verizon" source="Orion">Verizon</keyword> and AT&amp;T paid over $80 billion for the 5G frequencies. Although altimeter complaints on ASRS seem to be declining, many pilots still want tighter controls on 5G technology, said the report. Telecom operator Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> overtook <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword> in <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="Orion">5G</keyword> roll-out with the expansion of the network to additional 235 cities, taking its total reach to 500 cities. Reliance Jio has so far announced the expansion of its ultra high-speed fifth generation (5G) network to 406 cities. "Bharti Airtel...ultra-fast 5G service is available to customers in 500 cities in the country. Airtel added 235 cities to its network, making it one of the largest roll-outs to date," the company said in a statement. Airtel said that it is adding 30-40 cities on its 5G network daily. "Airtel was the first to offer 5G services in October 2022, and today's mega launch is our promise to connect every Airtel customer in the country with ultra-fast <keyword id="4237866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel-5G" source="Orion">Airtel 5G</keyword> Plus. We have already covered 500 cities and are adding 30 to 40 cities every single day. By September of 2023, we expect to expand our 5G footprint to all of urban India," Bharti Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon said. According to industry players, India has become the fastest country in the world to roll-out 5G networks. Against the target of rolling out 5G in 200 cities before March 31 set by the government, the service is now available in over 900 cities. Airtel said that its 5G Plus runs on a technology that has the widest acceptance in the world with the most developed ecosystem which ensures that all 5G smartphones in India seamlessly work on the Airtel network. "Second, the company promises to deliver the best experience - between 20 to 30 times higher speeds than today (compared to 4G) coupled with a brilliant voice experience and super-fast call connect," the statement said. Airtel has also removed the 5G data usage limit cap to match with Jio's offer. Earlier 5G data usage was limited to the same as the daily quota which customers had in their 4G subscription plan. "Customers will now be able to experience ultra-fast, reliable and secure 5G Plus services without having to worry about data exhaustion as the company removes the capping on data usage across all existing plans," the statement said. The company has also deployed the first 5G private network at Bosch facility in Bengaluru, and also at Mahindra &amp; Mahindra's Chakan manufacturing facility to make it the first 5G-enabled auto manufacturing unit. Airtel pips Jio in 5G rollout, reaches 500 cities across the country

She said the US needed to improve its hardware and encourage competition among vendors.This is especially important, Neuberger said, as the US is engaged in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-government-approves-more-ai-models-rivals-us-report-2024-1">tech arms race</a> with China and Chinese telecom companies, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-is-firing-back-again-in-china-chip-semiconductor-wars-2024-3">Huawei</a>. Neuberger said.The telecommunications industry affects valuable information belonging to American companies and the government. It's also often managed and updated remotely, so it needs to be secure, Neuberger said."Telecom systems are so complex today," she said. "If you don't have confidence in those vendors, it's really hard to trust it."Neuberger highlighted some of the government initiatives for investing in 5G, including the Biden administration's $1.5 billion <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ntia.gov/program/innovation-fund">Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund</a>, which aims to bring <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nist.gov/open-radio-access-network-open-ran">open standards</a> into telecommunications and advance innovation in the wireless industry."What we've been trying to do is bring in innovation to bring in new players to allow our traditional strength in software to come to bear," Neuberger said.Grants from these these types of funds have helped US allies. They have allowed global telecom companies, including those from India, Japan, and Europe, to test new technology together and learn from each other. The US has also been building a telecom partnership with India, as it's one of the biggest telecom markets in the world, along with the US and China.In November, the White House launched its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/National-Spectrum-Strategy.pdf">National Spectrum Strategy</a> to promote innovation in wireless technologies. Neuberger said this included industries such as connected vehicles and defense, adding that these technologies allowed the US to aid Ukraine when Russia struck down its electric lines."As we think about how we lead in these connected industries in the future, we have to think about creative ways to use spectrum more efficiently and differently," Neuberger said.

According to a <a href="https://telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/apple-will-roll-out-5g-software-updates-in-india-in-december/94800740">report</a> by Economic Times, this is not going to change anytime soon, and iPhone users may have to wait until December to use 5G. Apple has reportedly informed ET that an update to enable 5G services will be rolled out in December. "We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best 5G experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance are completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December," Apple said in a statement to ET. This means that iPhone users may have to wait for a long time before they will be able to use 5G services. As the Cupertino giant has said that the updates will “start rolling out to iPhone users in December”, it may take some time before all users receive the update, so, users may have to wait until next year to use 5G on iPhones. This comes when the Indian government has called for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/indian-government-wants-apple-and-samsung-to-quickly-roll-out-the-update-to-enable-5g-support/articleshow/94788906.cms">meeting</a> to discuss a speedy rollout of software updates to enable 5G services. If you have an iPhone, you may not be able to use 5G before December

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 5G rollout has been slow and underwhelming, not delivering on its promised benefits.</li><li>But there are blue skies ahead as 5G advancements finally arrive.</li></ul>At this point, it seems fair to call it: The arrival of 5G has been a little underwhelming.A few years ago, carriers and tech companies were heralding the arrival of 5G and hyping its possibilities. It would have huge capacity and low latency. It would be a boon for autonomous driving and the connected home. 5G would do it all.And then it didn't. Or at least, it hasn't yet.The 5G rollout has been slow and, at times, confusing. Rolling out a new network standard is always a juggling act that requires buy-in from governments, standards bodies, and other stakeholders.Still, there are reasons to be hopeful. Many companies at Mobile World Congress, which took place in late February in Barcelona, discussed new 5G technologies including 5G stand-alone and 5G-Advanced. These could eventually get us to 6G.<h2>More-advanced 5G technology is coming</h2>5G hasn't become widespread because carriers didn't have access from the get-go to the important bands of the spectrum, leading carriers to deploy versions of 5G using a hybrid system that piggybacks off 4G LTE.5G stand-alone has more promise. It's a 5G network that, yes, stands on its own — meaning it's running on its own technology, independent of 4G. Put more simply, it's the version of 5G we were once promised.The concept of 5G stand-alone isn't new, though it's taken time to arrive, largely because of the technical challenges of building a 5G core that delivers wide coverage. 5G stand-alone could allow 5G to flourish as intended.Another technology, called 5G-Advanced (sometimes called 5.5G), effectively moves 5G forward, promising improvements including faster data speeds and reduced latency."We're just right on the cusp of 5G-Advanced," Alex Sinclair, the chief technology officer of the mobile-network lobbying group GSMA, told Business Insider. "That's going to be finalized this year."Carriers and tech companies are heavily discussing 5G-Advanced. Huawei calls its version 5.5G, though that's really just a marketing term for the same technology.Sinclair said the specs for 5G-Advanced are expected to be finalized in the first half of this year. Huawei said at MWC that its version of 5G-Advanced would get "commercial use" in 2024.<h2>New ideas could get us to 6G</h2>It could be another six or seven years before the standard arrives in a meaningful way and we reach the promised land of blazing-fast movie downloads and reliable surgical robots. For that reason, the many discussions about 6G at MWC seemed a little premature.Anshel Sag, a principal analyst at Moor Insights &amp; Strategy, described Qualcomm's Giga-MIMO technology — an antenna array designed to increase 5G's data capacity while boosting the signal coverage — as an interesting approach to push the industry forward."It just kind of gives you that extra band of performance that maybe we'll need once we hit 6G in the next six or seven years," Sag said.Sag said that the industry is in a situation where 5G networks "haven't delivered on the promise they set out five years ago" and that he believes Qualcomm's approach could be the "right path" toward 6G.That's still a way off. For now, Sag said companies should focus on deploying 5G stand-alone, because none of the benefits of 5G-Advanced will be worth it without a fully stand-alone network. Sag described 5G-Advanced as "a motivation to get to stand-alone 5G faster.""I think it's kind of funny that we're talking 6G now, because we haven't actually fully rolled out 5G with stand-alone," Sag said, "and I think 5G with stand-alone will be what people expected 5G to be."

However, for overall fixed broadband speeds, India's global rank dipped by three spots, from 81st in February to 84th in March.
