New Delhi: India is set to enter a transformative "smartphone era" for cars in 2025, with the introduction of vehicles featuring 5G M2M connectivity and advanced AI technologies, according to the latest findings from Techarc's India Connected Consumer Report 2025. The report said the automotive sector will skip 4G and will enable connectivity using the latest 5G cellular technology. It observed that consumers are interested in spending money on improving the value proposition in terms of features, quality and experience rather than exploring too many smart devices. "22 per cent of the respondents shared about considering optimising their smart devices portfolio. Among the new set of categories, smart/connected cars is generating high interest among consumers. 55 per cent of the respondents said that they have come across news or information about smart/connected cars in recent times," it said. Starting in 2025, passenger cars in India will be equipped with 5G M2M connectivity, on-device GenAI, and cloud connectivity, making advanced technologies accessible across various price segments, it added. In-vehicle computing and artificial intelligence (GenAI), along with cloud applications, will become essential components of cars, enabling real-time data processing to support drivers effectively. Most cars priced at Rs 20 lakh and above will feature these technologies as standard. The cumulative revenues from automotive chipset companies have already surpassed USD 1.5 billion, with companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek leading the market. Some of the familiar applications that consumers will be able to use while driving include communication apps for audio/video conferencing, OTT entertainment apps, music streaming, podcasts, online shopping, vehicle maintenance, and servicing. "With connectivity and the technologies it brings to the cars, the future of the automobile sector will be fundamentally determined by the auto-technologies that will influence the overall experience, performance, comfort, safety and entertainment available to the drivers as well as the passengers. "So far, such features were seen as luxury or high-end experiences. But starting 2025, many of these will become mainstream for cars in India," Techarc AutoTech Analyst Sadat Ahanger said. With 22 automobile manufacturers producing nearly 5 million passenger vehicles annually in India, the country is poised to become a leader in the global 5G M2M market within the next few years, the report said. About 21 per cent of respondents said MG Motors is the leader in providing <keyword id="24016739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="connected-cars-in-India" source="keywords">connected cars in India</keyword>, followed closely by Kia Motors at 18 per cent and Tata Motors at 15 per cent, it added. Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki also ranked among the top-five brands in this category. The report draws insights from a survey of 4,500 "connected consumers" across metro and non-metro cities. The report defined a connected consumer as one owning at least 3 smart devices in addition to a smartphone.

The company in an official statement on Thursday stated that "Further to the disclosure dated November 21, 2023, the Company has today received from the Reserve Bank of India approval for conversion of the Company from Non-Banking Financial Company to Core <keyword id="19895437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment" source="keywords">Investment</keyword> Company." According to the Reserve Bank of India, a CIC is a specialised NBFC with an minimum asset size of Rs 100 crore. The RBI's circular dated December 20, 2016 stated that, a CIC's main business is the acquisition of shares and securities with certain conditions. One of the conditions stipulated by the central bank is that the CIC holds not less than 90 percent of its net assets in the form of investment in equity shares, preference shares, bonds, debentures, debt or loans in group companies. The transition from an NBFC to a CIC involves several key changes in the company's operational framework. As a Core Investment Company, <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword> Financial Services will primarily focus on investments in and the management of its subsidiaries companies. The transformation to a CIC structure would enable Jio Financial Services to delineate the financials and operations of each subsidiary, to provide better value discovery for investors. Unlike typical NBFCs, CICs are non-deposit taking financial companies that have their assets predominantly invested in the equity shares, preference shares, or debt instruments of their group companies. As a CIC, the company gains greater operational flexibility. It can now focus on core investment activities without engaging in other financial services. The CICs can explore different sectors and diversify their investment portfolio. This flexibility allows them to adapt to changing market conditions. Jio Financials gets RBI nod to become Core Investment Company

State-owned <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> will start rolling out <keyword id="21279641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-services" source="keywords">4G services</keyword> across the country from August, using completely indigenous technology in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar" policy, according to official sources. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. Telecom regulator <keyword id="19942079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Trai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Trai">Trai</keyword> in a recent paper explained core as part of a network that offers the functionality of aggregation, call control, switching, authentication, charging, gateway functionality, etc. TCS, Tejas Networks and government-owned ITI have bagged orders worth about Rs 19,000 crore from BSNL for deploying 4G network which is upgradable to 5G. In a recent earnings call, Tejas Networks Executive Director and chief operating officer Arnob Roy said BSNL's mobile network is getting deployed across zones. He said that wherever the C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is getting integrated to the existing core. "When the C-DOT core gets deployed in those circles, in those zones, they will get parented to the C-DOT core as well. Tejas Networks Limited. This is just a temporary situation where the RAN (radio access network) is deployed and in that zone, the core is not available," Roy said. BSNL is in the process of deploying 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and <keyword id="20041753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-services" source="keywords">5G services</keyword> across India. "The company has installed over 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, out of which more than 6,000 are active in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP West and Haryana circle. BSNL has been selling 4G capable SIM only for the last 4-5 years. Only those customers who have older SIM will need to get new SIM to experience the service," a BSNL official said. BSNL to launch 4G services across India in August; to use indigenous technology

We have computers, laptops, and other devices connected to WiFi, or if you're not relying on WiFi, they use some protocol that's cellularly connected. All these things will need to work together, but the one common factor is their touchpoints to the network.There's an entire ecosystem of devices and tool sets and general employee knowledge that is necessary to be built up to support something that is centered on a single technology like 5G.While the complexity of 5G might seem daunting for companies, especially with the added challenges of existing technologies, we have a responsibility to simplify connectivity for service providers, enterprises, and, ultimately, the end users.We're also trying to remove siloes that have existed. A mobile network has always been siloed from the physical broadband network. There are reasons behind it, but now, how do we integrate them to be sure the experience is seamless and flawless?How does breaking down siloes and focusing on complementary technology benefit businesses?If we can shift our mindset, 5G could very well usher in a new age focused on multiaccess user experiences. There is a likely future where consumers will never need to know whether they are connected to WiFi, 4G, 5G, 6G, or whatever next-generation connectivity technology comes next. If experience expectations are being fulfilled, how users are connected won't matter.The network elements for 5G are designed to distribute roles to empower companies with control, access, and insight. It gives a business the tools to operate similarly to how it is today without feeling like they're handing off the communicative arm of its IT to an entity. If the power goes out or the networks go down, how much will it impact your business? No business wants to forecast that risk in their planning.With 5G, that control can be migrated into the business instead of businesses having to hire experts to understand what mobile networks look like and negotiate the handoffs between a public network and a private network. It simplifies all of that.It's a simplification tool that extends and expands the reach of what a business can do today across the globe.What advice do you have for companies to derive the most value out of 5G?The first thing is understanding your use cases and having a good grasp of your existing technology stack. Looking at the big picture is important for understanding your needs today but also making sure that tomorrow isn't forgotten. It's very important that your ecosystem is front and center in your decision-making process.The goal should be simplifying and expanding what you're already capable of. It's a democratization of connectivity and access.Investing in 5G isn't a one-time thing. It's a long-term decision — an ongoing commitment to innovation, development, and opportunity. It's important that you're not buying technology for technology's sake. Be comfortable not knowing everything and trusting your partners.

Cisco strategy manager says combining 5G with established tech can help companies get ahead

The following has been edited for length and clarity.My company, Shared Access, has been working with the Crystal Palace Football Club in London for years to improve <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-5g-technology-leaves-connectivity-legacy-in-olympic-host-cities-2024-8">connectivity</a> at its stadium, Selhurst Park.It started when Vodafone approached Shared Access to help build a system for the stadium that ensures great service even when all 30,000 fans are trying to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">use their phones at once</a>.Last year, the Crystal Palace team came to us for help supporting a specific cohort of fans: those with visual impairments. In partnership with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givevision.net/">GiveVision</a>, they were working on deploying headsets that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-tech-innovations-behind-paris-olympic-games-connectivity-timeline-2024-8">stream live match footage</a> directly to fans with partial sight, allowing them to sit anywhere in the stadium but see every moment in sync with the pitch action — and they needed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">faster connectivity</a> to make it happen.<h2 id="a62d967b-58dc-4173-a02e-13c9a124d3fe">The existing networks weren't cutting it</h2>Before coming to us, the team working on the project tried running the headsets over WiFi, but there was too much latency. People using the headsets experienced everything on a slight delay, with the fans around them reacting to something on the field before they could see the action.The 4G network that we'd previously deployed with Vodafone, and even public 5G networks, weren't going to do the job. Public networks have a lot of firewalls and protocols that create additional delays, such as the need for data to travel from the stadium to the core network of a mobile operator outside the stadium and then back to the user. It's also difficult because the number of other users using the network inside the venue slows things down.We decided to install a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-private-wireless-connectivity-changing-airport-experience-aviation-mwc-2024-10">private 5G network</a> with an on-site core in the stadium. This allows for fully enclosed connectivity within the venue, avoiding external data transfer and eliminating the security-protocol challenges of major mobile-network operators. It provides nearly instantaneous performance, with faster speeds than 4G and even purer 5G speeds than most public users experience. But it's taken multiple Olympics over six years for the technology to reach new heights.Here's how 5G capabilities have progressed at the Olympic Games since 2018, starting with a small trial at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and expanding to today's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-summer-olympics-2024">Games</a>-wide connectivity experience.<h2 id="47d86205-2395-4901-b982-649d55ca59a0">Pyeongchang Winter Olympics 2018</h2>For the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, KT, formerly Korea Telecom, ran 5G-network trials to showcase how the technology could be used.The trials included Sync View, a small camera that provided real-time athlete viewpoints, and Hologram Live, which broadcast press conferences live and in hologram form. There was also a 360-degree virtual-reality system that let visitors put on a headset and be immersed in other venues.Another trial feature, Time Slice, allowed viewers at home to watch events from multiple angles. The demonstrations highlighted the potential of 5G for high-speed, low-latency applications in broadcasting and immersive experiences.The trials in Pyeongchang were limited by necessity: 5G was still a nascent technology. Widespread adoption of end-user 5G didn't start until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.statista.com/chart/9604/5g-subscription-forecast/">a year after the 2018 Games</a>, but organizers saw the opportunity and chose to trial it.<h2 id="7012baa5-1224-4c03-aa1b-446d08caeb95">Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020</h2>The delayed Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021 because of the coronavirus, included a slew of 5G innovations.Golf-tournament attendees could rent devices to watch live footage of players who were at different holes from where they were, which provided a new level of access.For the sailing competition, a 50-foot floating screen in the harbor broadcast footage of the event via a drone and 5G technology, bringing a historically hard-to-see sport closer to viewers. At the swimming pool, attendees could use a 5G-enabled augmented-reality app to learn more about the competitors in front of them.All those innovations were made possible by the collaboration between the tech giant Intel and its Japanese partner NTT Docomo. The companies jointly developed the 5G network at what organizers called "the most innovative Olympic Games ever."Indeed, the Tokyo Games saw a significant step forward in 5G adoption because of Japan's advanced tech use. But it would still take time for it to be adopted more widely.<h2 id="5aebc8e4-2aa2-4ac4-81ed-cc52bc14ff84">Beijing Winter Olympics 2022</h2>China has long been an innovator of mobile technology, and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing proved no exception.Each Olympic venue had a full 5G network available to use, a first for the global competition. The technology was used at all sporting events, allowing for much deeper integration with TV broadcasting. Mario Reis, the director of telecommunications at the Olympic Broadcasting Services, said at the time that advancement in 5G enabled it to be trusted enough for deployment as a backbone technology for the Games' coverage.Intel once again partnered with a company from the host country, China Unicom, to roll out 5G capabilities. This was a boon given the more-remote nature of the Games, which took place during the COVID-19 pandemic.The ability for athletes to keep in touch with their families using 5G — which allows for faster, higher-resolution video calls — likely helped ease the challenges of performing at an event where movement and interaction were limited.<h2 id="3feb3546-b3f6-4ab4-b0bc-ac1cde6869bf">Paris Summer Olympics 2024</h2>Unlike previous Games, where organizers have sought to assign network responsibilities across a number of providers, the Paris Olympic organizers hired Orange as the sole provider to oversee 5G."It's a very impressive deployment that we are doing to enhance coverage," Bertrand Rojat, the chief marketing and innovation officer at Orange, told BI.The telecom giant's plans include a massive private 5G network to provide capacity across 32 sports and 120 official sites across the city. The organizers said that 12,000 screens, 8,000 WiFi terminals, and 13,000 computers are all connected by nearly 250,000 miles of fiber-optic cable, which will transmit the Games from the stadiums.The ability to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/network-slicing-5g-more-effective-risks-2023-11">use network slicing</a>, where a 5G network's total capacity is divided up and earmarked for specific uses, means the Olympic Broadcasting Services, which streams footage of the events, is expected to have minimal issues. If network slicing weren't in place, periods of peak usage by Games attendees could take up the capacity needed to power broadcasts.It's a significant test of the network but one that Rojat believes Orange is well prepared to handle."We're quite confident," he told BI, "although you can never commit 100%."

Rather than build a series of new venues, existing ones have been repurposed. <a target="_blank" href="https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/our-commitments/the-environment/infrastructures">Only one new permanent venue was constructed</a>, and there's more <a target="_blank" href="https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/our-commitments/the-environment/organising-more-circular-games">renting than buying</a> when it comes to equipment like furniture to reduce waste. Sustainability initiatives also extend to the 5G technology powering the Olympic Games.Orange, the telecommunications provider for the Paris Games, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.orange.com/en/allconnected/paris2024/paris-2024-how-orange-will-limit-its-environmental-impact">has set itself the goal</a> of limiting its carbon emissions to 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. If met, Orange's carbon emissions would account for less than 1% of the total estimated emissions of the 2024 Olympics.It's the latest example of how 5G providers are supporting sustainability efforts at global-scale live events."As sustainability initiatives around large public venues gather steam, we know IT teams are being asked to find ways to contribute to their organization's decarbonization efforts," said Kevin Swank, the product-marketing director at CommScope, a service provider that has worked on sports stadiums in France, Germany, and the US.<h2 id="1d0215d6-49e6-4444-b194-294cf1e5f1bd">Environmentally friendly technology that can support more fans</h2>Though 5G systems require infrastructure installation, their technology is more sustainable than older connectivity systems like analog distributed antenna systems, Swank said.Digital 5G systems use less power and less cooling than older systems, which need large amounts of power and cabling to run, Swank told Business Insider. And because 5G systems run digitally, they don't require as much physical infrastructure as their predecessors, Swank added.He said he witnessed the positive impact — on the environment and the fan experience — when CommScope updated the internet infrastructure at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.commscope.com/globalassets/digizuite/965502-atandt-stadium-cs-115933-en.pdf">AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas</a>, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, in 2020."The venue was reaching the performance limits of its equipment, and its current network just couldn't keep up with the growing demands of a mobile-device-centric fan base," Swank told BI. The stadium needed a 5G network that could support augmented-reality features and mobile-ordering capabilities for concessions for up to 100,000 visitors at a time.By switching to 5G, the stadium's network performance increased tenfold, while its power use went down by about 87% and its cooling requirements decreased by up to 75%, a project report from CommScope said. Those reductions equate to over 100 metric tons in CO2 emissions savings a year, Swank said.The stadium's 5G system resulted in just five equipment storage racks compared with the 30 to 40 racks previously required for its analog equipment.Because of these advantages, 5G is quickly gaining steam within the entertainment industry as events continue to grow in scale and attendees expect more seamless experiences.<h2 id="4de8c9b0-599e-4fa3-9e87-59f5acb6ad1c">Recycling 5G equipment for more sustainability</h2>To work toward its carbon-emissions goal for the Paris Games, Orange decreased its equipment manufacturing and infrastructure-deployment footprint. Orange, in partnership with the consultancy Carbone4, estimated that 86% of its global footprint came from those two areas.For the Paris Olympics, the company is using more local suppliers and shipping bulky items by sea rather than air to reduce emissions. Orange said it planned to rent one-quarter of its equipment and estimated that 75% of the equipment would be reused or redeployed after the Games.Generally, the 5G networks used at sports venues' large events can be reused after the events end and the increased capacity is no longer needed, said Kelvin Chaffer, the CEO of Lifecycle Software, which provides support systems for network operators."By designing infrastructure that can be repurposed for other community uses postevent, and implementing green technologies and sustainable practices," Chaffer said. He added that this approach gives large sporting event organizers the ability "to minimize the environmental impact of event-triggered infrastructure projects."

After the event, it became a hub for YouTubers and other content creators because of its gigabit-speed internet connectivity. It was considered revolutionary because the average internet speed in the UK at the time was slower.The planning efforts allowed the Stratford Halo to be repurposed into a residential building two years after the closing ceremony.In the lead-up to the Games, connectivity infrastructure was embedded in the London Underground light-rail network and the Westfield shopping center in Stratford. Communities continue to rely on this technology for internet access.<h2 id="0f74ba14-8f70-4b55-aea6-131d7970ae5f">Tokyo 2020: Tokyo Data Highway</h2>Japan has a reputation as a technology innovator. But its capital, Tokyo, which in 2021 hosted the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics, had a meager showing of 5G infrastructure.5G technology wasn't adopted at a consumer level until 2019, and Japan's 5G-infrastructure rollout was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKBN22R0XP/">delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic</a>. In 2020, just 10 5G towers were installed.But 5G technology became more common by 2021, two years after Tokyo launched its 5G-infrastructure project, the Tokyo Data Highway. Buoyed by the Olympics, the city added dozens of 5G towers to its connectivity system, expanding to 149 installations in 2021.The goal is to have 5G available throughout the city by 2030, though it's unclear how far along the project is.<h2 id="39507179-0379-4d14-9e10-fe6309766453">Beijing 2022: Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway</h2>The 108-mile Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway connected the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics with the rest of China.It linked Beijing to the competition space outside the Chinese capital where events like ski jumping, snowboarding, and freestyle skiing took place. Athletes were able to take the driverless train between the two locations at speeds of up to 217 mph.But the railway's legacy goes beyond the hyperfast transportation it continues to provide; it was also the first high-speed train equipped with 5G coverage.The train route was also lined with 5G signal towers to ensure reliable, high-speed internet. In 2022, the 5G technology was fast enough that train riders could watch the opening ceremony on their personal devices. Now riders can enjoy superfast interest connections while traveling on the railway.
