According to an exchange filing, with a growing number of customers transitioning to 5G, Airtel is reallocating its mid-band spectrum to expand 5G services across the 1800, 2100, and 2300 MHz bands nationwide. The re-farming of the mid-band spectrum aims to provide customers with enhanced <keyword id="726530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="browsing-speeds" source="Orion">browsing speeds</keyword> and improved <keyword id="2551158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indoor-coverage" source="Orion">indoor coverage</keyword>. As data demand escalates, Airtel is accelerating its spectrum re-farming efforts to deliver an exceptional 5G experience to its users. Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel, remarked, "As more customers pivot to our 5G services, we have re-farmed our mid-band spectrum which was being used for 4G services. With this, we are also ready to launch Stand-alone technology. Spectrum auction ends with bids worth ₹11,000 crore, Bharti Airtel emerges as the biggest bidder

State-owned <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> will start rolling out <keyword id="21279641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-services" source="keywords">4G services</keyword> across the country from August, using completely indigenous technology in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar" policy, according to official sources. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. Telecom regulator <keyword id="19942079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Trai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Trai">Trai</keyword> in a recent paper explained core as part of a network that offers the functionality of aggregation, call control, switching, authentication, charging, gateway functionality, etc. TCS, Tejas Networks and government-owned ITI have bagged orders worth about Rs 19,000 crore from BSNL for deploying 4G network which is upgradable to 5G. In a recent earnings call, Tejas Networks Executive Director and chief operating officer Arnob Roy said BSNL's mobile network is getting deployed across zones. He said that wherever the C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is getting integrated to the existing core. "When the C-DOT core gets deployed in those circles, in those zones, they will get parented to the C-DOT core as well. Tejas Networks Limited. This is just a temporary situation where the RAN (radio access network) is deployed and in that zone, the core is not available," Roy said. BSNL is in the process of deploying 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and <keyword id="20041753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-services" source="keywords">5G services</keyword> across India. "The company has installed over 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, out of which more than 6,000 are active in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP West and Haryana circle. BSNL has been selling 4G capable SIM only for the last 4-5 years. Only those customers who have older SIM will need to get new SIM to experience the service," a BSNL official said. BSNL to launch 4G services across India in August; to use indigenous technology

Led by <keyword id="6354504" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="reliance-jio" source="Orion">Reliance Jio</keyword>, the mega <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="Orion">5G</keyword> spectrum auction ended on Monday after receiving record bids worth over Rs 1.5 lakh crore in 40 rounds spanning across seven days. 5G airwaves worth Rs 1,50,173 crore has been sold so far and the final tally is being prepared by the government, according to sources. Day six of the 5G spectrum auction on Sunday saw an incremental increase in the bidding figure after 37 rounds, with bids worth Rs 1,50,130 crore. According to industry analysts, Reliance Jio has placed bids for more than Rs 84,500 crore, while <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword>'s bids are worth more than Rs 46,500 crore. Vodafone Idea has placed bids of around Rs 18,500 crore, while a unit of <keyword id="118623" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-enterprises" source="Orion">Adani Enterprises</keyword> has bids of around Rs 5,000 crore. Jio and Airtel were fiercely engaged in intense bidding in <keyword id="3829976" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uttar-pradesh-east" source="Orion">Uttar Pradesh East</keyword> circle for the 1800MHz band. Devroop Dhar, Co-founder and board member, Primus Partners, said the auction stands testimony to the fact that the industry is willing and ready to expand further than ever before. "That is also the reason behind the key players finally going for the 700MHz bands. The 40 per cent cut down of the bands for Rs 3,927 crore per unit acted as an aid for the bidders," Dhar said. The expansive 700MHz band is built to cover densely populated regions such as India, which will truly benefit from this band and receive expansive 5G coverage. "As the bidding has been much higher than the previous auctions, the amount generated will add positively to the revenue and will help the government in the future while setting up the 5G infrastructure," Dhar added. While Reliance Jio may have an upper hand in terms of bundled handsets and their investments, other industry players also have an opportunity to compete in the industry as according to studies, Indian consumers claim to be willing to pay 50 per cent more for 5G-bundled plans. "Hence, the companies need to find an incentive to get their customers upgrade to 5G devices," Dhar said. 5G spectrum auctions fetch ₹1.5 lakh crore – more than half of it comes from Reliance Jio

NEW DELHI: Amid the industry's concerns over less-than-expected price cuts, Trai chairman PD Vaghela on Tuesday asserted that the regulator's recommendations of a 39 per cent drop in <keyword id="804714" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spectrum-prices" source="Orion">spectrum prices</keyword> are rational, attractive and backed by "scientific calculations". Vaghela told PTI that in view of the huge market potential of 5G, he is confident that the telecom industry will actively take part in the auction. The chairman expressed hope that the recommended reserve prices will attract bidders in the forthcoming auction. He also said that the ease of doing business, extensive stakeholder inputs, and facilitating the proliferation of 5G in the country have been the most important drivers for Trai's latest stance. Setting the stage for the rollout of 5G services, telecom regulator Trai on Monday recommended a mega auction plan valued at over Rs 7.5 lakh crore at the base price across multiple bands for radiowaves allocated over 30 years. Overall, the <keyword id="12394776" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="telecom-regulatory-authority-of" source="Orion">Telecom Regulatory Authority of</keyword> <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> (Trai) recommended about a 39 per cent reduction in the reserve or floor price for the sale of spectrum for mobile services, including the latest 5G offering, as it looked to match revenue expectations with the industry's paying capacity. Industry body COAI, however, has expressed deep disappointment over Trai's 5G recommendations, and termed the spectrum pricing suggested by the regulator as "too high". Given the recent reforms for the telecom sector announced by the government, these recommendations are "one step backwards than forward" towards building a digitally connected India, COAI claimed. COAI argued that the industry had recommended 90 per cent lower prices, and to see only about 35-40 per cent reduction recommended in prices "is deeply disappointing". Asked about the industry's views on less than expected price cuts, Vaghela in an interview said the regulator's recommendations of a 39 per cent drop in spectrum prices are backed by "scientific calculations". "Trai takes the business of calculation of valuation seriously, and on that basis, we have arrived at rational reserve prices. The prices we have given have been set at 70 per cent of valuation," he said. Taking off from the telecom department's reference seeking auction-related recommendations, Trai considered various aspects like ease of doing business, stakeholder inputs and most importantly, the proliferation of 5G and use cases in the country to ensure that economic benefits of technology are derived by all sections of society, he said. "If you see our recommendations on surrender fee, easy and flexible payment options, and leasing of spectrum for private networks, these are all aimed at ease of doing business and attracting investment into the telecom sector," Vaghela said. While auctions and network rollout are important considerations, "as a country, we need to facilitate penetration of 5G based technologies and use cases", Vaghela said. "A complete ecosystem needs to be created towards this objective," he said. "So, we have recommended action plans for vertical sectors, i.e., industry sectors and social sectors ...that they should be actively preparing plans for adopting 5G applications. Stakeholders like farmers, fishermen, students, MSMEs etc need to be further empowered to be part of the digital economy," Vaghela added. 5G technology once implemented should create demand for telecom products, thereby improving revenue streams for telecom service providers, and should also help consumers and the public at large to become a part of the mainstream digital economy, he noted. "India should reap the benefits of technologies and applications, which are based on 5G," the Trai chief said. On whether the industry has the paying capacity, given that over one lakh <keyword id="13265908" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="megahertz" source="Orion">megahertz</keyword> of spectrum worth over Rs 5 lakh crore at reserve price will be on the block (for 20-year allocation), Vaghela said, "With the attractive reserve prices recommended, flexible payment options offered, easy spectrum surrender conditions, recommendations on leasing etc., the forthcoming auction will surely be attractive for the investors". The Indian economy is growing, technology adoption is being ramped up by different vertical sectors and the market for telecom products is expanding at a rapid pace, he noted. "In view of the huge market potential of 5G, I am sure that the telecom industry will actively take part in the auction," he said. Recommended spectrum prices are backed by scientific calculations, says Trai chief Vaghela

The auction of over 72 GHz of the spectrum will be held by July-end, said an official statement detailing the decision taken by the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>, at its meeting held on June 14. The spectrum auction will commence on July 26, 2022. Sources told PTI that the Cabinet has approved 5G auctions at reserve prices recommended by the sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). TRAI had earlier recommended about a 39 per cent reduction in the reserve or floor price for the sale of 5G spectrum for mobile services. While the 5G spectrum in nine frequency bands will be auctioned to telecom operators like Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, the Notice Inviting Applications -- bid-related document issued by DoT -- said big tech firms for the time being will be allowed to take the 5G spectrum for their captive non-public network, on lease from the telecom companies. The Notice Inviting Offer said direct allocation to the big tech companies will follow a demand study and sector regulator TRAI's recommendation on aspects such as pricing and modalities of such allocation. Big tech companies like Google have been seeking direct allocation of spectrum for applications such as machine-to-machine communications, IoT and AI, while telecom companies have been opposing direct allocation of 5G spectrum to them saying it will distort the level playing field and rob the government of revenues. "Enterprises setting up Captive Non-Public Network may obtain the spectrum on lease from TSPs (telecom service providers) having Access Service Authorization and establish their own isolated network. Required Licensing terms and conditions and Spectrum Leasing guidelines shall be issued by DoT," the Notice Inviting Applications said. As per the document, the government from time to time will publish required provisions and guidelines and licensing terms and conditions for enabling the setting up of Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN). According to the document, the auction is slated to start on July 26, 2022. Among other key dates to watch-out for is the pre-bid conference scheduled for June 20, 2022, submission of applications with a deadline of July 8, and pre-qualification of bidders on July 18. Mock auctions will be held on July 22 and 23, 2022. A total of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum with a validity period of 20 years will be put to auction to be held by the end of July, 2022. "The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a proposal of the Department of Telecommunications to conduct spectrum auction through which spectrum will be assigned to the successful bidders for providing 5G services to public and enterprises," the official release said. The auction will be held for spectrum in various Low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), Mid (3300 MHz) and High (26 GHz) frequency bands. Overall, the payment terms have been eased for bidders in the upcoming auction. Continuing the pace of telecom sector reforms, the Cabinet announced various progressive options with regard to the spectrum auction, for facilitating ease of doing business. "For the first time ever, there is no mandatory requirement to make upfront payment by the successful bidders. Payments for spectrum can be made in 20 equal annual instalments to be paid in advance at the beginning of each year," it said, adding this is expected to significantly ease cash flow requirements and lower the cost of doing business in this sector. The bidders would be given an option to surrender the spectrum after 10 years with no future liabilities with respect to balance instalments. No SUC (spectrum usage charges) will be charged for spectrum acquired in this auction. "The availability of sufficient backhaul spectrum is also necessary to enable the roll-out of 5G services. To meet the backhaul demand, the Cabinet has decided to provisionally allot 2 carriers of 250 MHz each in E-band to the Telecom Service Providers," the official statement said. The Cabinet also decided to double the number of traditional Microwave backhaul carriers in the existing frequency bands of 13, 15, 18 and 21 GHz bands, the release informed. The India market is gearing up 5G services, that will usher in ultra high speeds and spawn new-age services and business models, and the mega-auctions will pave the way for roll out of next generation services by telcos, in 2022-23. It's also often managed and updated remotely, so it needs to be secure, Neuberger said."Telecom systems are so complex today," she said. "If you don't have confidence in those vendors, it's really hard to trust it."Neuberger highlighted some of the government initiatives for investing in 5G, including the Biden administration's $1.5 billion <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ntia.gov/program/innovation-fund">Public Wireless Supply Chain Innovation Fund</a>, which aims to bring <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nist.gov/open-radio-access-network-open-ran">open standards</a> into telecommunications and advance innovation in the wireless industry."What we've been trying to do is bring in innovation to bring in new players to allow our traditional strength in software to come to bear," Neuberger said.Grants from these these types of funds have helped US allies. They have allowed global telecom companies, including those from India, Japan, and Europe, to test new technology together and learn from each other. The US has also been building a telecom partnership with India, as it's one of the biggest telecom markets in the world, along with the US and China.In November, the White House launched its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/National-Spectrum-Strategy.pdf">National Spectrum Strategy</a> to promote innovation in wireless technologies. Neuberger said this included industries such as connected vehicles and defense, adding that these technologies allowed the US to aid Ukraine when Russia struck down its electric lines."As we think about how we lead in these connected industries in the future, we have to think about creative ways to use spectrum more efficiently and differently," Neuberger said.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 5G rollout has been slow and underwhelming, not delivering on its promised benefits.</li><li>But there are blue skies ahead as 5G advancements finally arrive.</li></ul>At this point, it seems fair to call it: The arrival of 5G has been a little underwhelming.A few years ago, carriers and tech companies were heralding the arrival of 5G and hyping its possibilities. It would have huge capacity and low latency. It would be a boon for autonomous driving and the connected home. 5G would do it all.And then it didn't. Or at least, it hasn't yet.The 5G rollout has been slow and, at times, confusing. Rolling out a new network standard is always a juggling act that requires buy-in from governments, standards bodies, and other stakeholders.Still, there are reasons to be hopeful. Many companies at Mobile World Congress, which took place in late February in Barcelona, discussed new 5G technologies including 5G stand-alone and 5G-Advanced. These could eventually get us to 6G.<h2>More-advanced 5G technology is coming</h2>5G hasn't become widespread because carriers didn't have access from the get-go to the important bands of the spectrum, leading carriers to deploy versions of 5G using a hybrid system that piggybacks off 4G LTE.5G stand-alone has more promise. It's a 5G network that, yes, stands on its own — meaning it's running on its own technology, independent of 4G. Put more simply, it's the version of 5G we were once promised.The concept of 5G stand-alone isn't new, though it's taken time to arrive, largely because of the technical challenges of building a 5G core that delivers wide coverage. 5G stand-alone could allow 5G to flourish as intended.Another technology, called 5G-Advanced (sometimes called 5.5G), effectively moves 5G forward, promising improvements including faster data speeds and reduced latency."We're just right on the cusp of 5G-Advanced," Alex Sinclair, the chief technology officer of the mobile-network lobbying group GSMA, told Business Insider. "That's going to be finalized this year."Carriers and tech companies are heavily discussing 5G-Advanced. Huawei calls its version 5.5G, though that's really just a marketing term for the same technology.Sinclair said the specs for 5G-Advanced are expected to be finalized in the first half of this year. Huawei said at MWC that its version of 5G-Advanced would get "commercial use" in 2024.<h2>New ideas could get us to 6G</h2>It could be another six or seven years before the standard arrives in a meaningful way and we reach the promised land of blazing-fast movie downloads and reliable surgical robots. For that reason, the many discussions about 6G at MWC seemed a little premature.Anshel Sag, a principal analyst at Moor Insights &amp; Strategy, described Qualcomm's Giga-MIMO technology — an antenna array designed to increase 5G's data capacity while boosting the signal coverage — as an interesting approach to push the industry forward."It just kind of gives you that extra band of performance that maybe we'll need once we hit 6G in the next six or seven years," Sag said.Sag said that the industry is in a situation where 5G networks "haven't delivered on the promise they set out five years ago" and that he believes Qualcomm's approach could be the "right path" toward 6G.That's still a way off. For now, Sag said companies should focus on deploying 5G stand-alone, because none of the benefits of 5G-Advanced will be worth it without a fully stand-alone network. Sag described 5G-Advanced as "a motivation to get to stand-alone 5G faster.""I think it's kind of funny that we're talking 6G now, because we haven't actually fully rolled out 5G with stand-alone," Sag said, "and I think 5G with stand-alone will be what people expected 5G to be."

Washington: Researchers have demonstrated a method to detect the vibrations of a <keyword id="18312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-phone" source="Orion">mobile phone</keyword>'s earpiece and decipher what the person on the other side of the call was saying with up to 83 per cent accuracy. The team at Pennsylvania State University used an off-the-shelf automotive radar sensor and a novel processing approach to reveal this significant security concern. "As technology becomes more reliable and robust over time, the misuse of such sensing <keyword id="28128" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="technologies" source="Orion">technologies</keyword> by adversaries becomes probable," said Suryoday Basak, a doctoral candidate at Penn State. "Our demonstration of this kind of exploitation contributes to the pool of scientific literature that broadly says, 'Hey! Automotive radars can be used to eavesdrop on audio. We need to do something about this," Basak said. The radar operates in the millimetre-wave (mmWave) spectrum, specifically in the bands of 60 to 64 gigahertz and 77 to 81 gigahertz, which inspired the researchers to name their approach "mmSpy." This is a subset of the <keyword id="151587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="radio-spectrum" source="Orion">radio spectrum</keyword> used for <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g" source="Orion">5G</keyword>, the fifth-generation standard for communication systems across the globe. In the mmSpy demonstration, described in 2022 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (SP), the researchers simulated people speaking through the earpiece of a <keyword id="28168" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="smartphone" source="Orion">smartphone</keyword>. The phone's earpiece vibrates from the speech, and that vibration permeates across the body of the phone. "We use the radar to sense this vibration and reconstruct what was said by the person on the other side of the line," said Basak. The researchers, including Mahanth Gowda, an assistant professor at Penn State, noted that their approach works even when the audio is completely inaudible to both humans and <keyword id="657420" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="microphones" source="Orion">microphones</keyword> nearby. "This isn't the first time similar vulnerabilities or attack modalities have been found, but this particular aspect -- detecting and reconstructing speech from the other side of a smartphone line -- was not yet explored," Basak said. The radar sensor data is pre-processed via MATLAB and Python modules, which are computing platform-language interfaces used to remove hardware-related and artefact noise from the data. The researchers then feed that to machine learning modules trained to classify speech and reconstruct audio. When the radar senses vibrations from a foot away, the processed speech is 83 per cent accuracy. That drops the farther the radar moves from the phone, down to 43 per cent accuracy at six feet, they said. Once the speech is reconstructed, the researchers can then filter, enhance or classify keywords as needed, Basak said. The team is continuing to refine their approach to better understand not only how to protect against this security vulnerability, but also how to exploit it for good. "The methodology that we developed can also be used for sensing vibrations in industrial machinery, smart home systems and building-monitoring systems," Basak said. According to the researchers, there are similar home maintenance or even health monitoring systems that could benefit from such sensitive tracking. "Imagine a radar that could track a user and call for help if some health parameter changes in a dangerous way," Basak said. "With the right set of target actions, radars in smart homes and industry can enable a faster turnaround when problems and issues are detected," he added. SEE ALSO:
