Composer-singer Bappi Lahiri hospitalised after testing COVID-19 positive

Periscope live streaming service shut down by Twitter, six years after launch

At least 6 out of 10 people worldwide are likely to lose their <keyword id="11018" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jobs">jobs</keyword> by 2025 as humans and <keyword id="6362653" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="machines">machines</keyword> are probably to spend equal amounts of time at <keyword id="6355058" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="work">work</keyword>, reveals a new report published by the <keyword id="69007" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Economic-Forum">World Economic Forum</keyword> (<keyword id="102110" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WEF">WEF</keyword>). The report was based on a survey of 32,000 workers conducted by the consulting giant PwC across 19 countries, Xinhua reported. While nearly 40 per cent workers globally think they would lose their jobs in five years, 56 per cent feel that fewer people would obtain long-term employment in the future, the survey showed. More than 60 per cent demanded that governments must work to protect their jobs. The survey also showed that 40 per cent of workers used the Covid-induced lockdown in 2020 to hone their digital skills, while 77 per cent were ready to learn new skills or to retrain. Further, 80 per cent were confident in their ability to adapt to new technologies. According to a previous WEF report, the growing reliance on machines and artificial intelligence have increased the risk of loss of 85 million jobs. At the same time, they are also likely to generate 97 million new jobs in such a scenario. Around six out of 10 people may lose jobs to machines by 2025, reveals World Economic Forum report

Already available on Android and iOS under testing, the new Clubhouse-like audio chat rooms <keyword id="6399502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="feature">feature</keyword> called Spaces by Twitter will soon be available on desktops too. App researcher Jane Manchun Wong first spotted the arrival of Spaces on the web version. "Twitter is working on @TwitterSpaces preview cards for the web app," she posted in a tweet. After first testing its audio chat feature Spaces with a small group of people on iOS, Twitter last month said it is now expanding the test to Android users in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, to give them a chance to join, listen, and speak in live, host-moderated <keyword id="7692590" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="audio-conversations">audio conversations</keyword>. Currently, the feature is available as an early preview for a select few Android users who are part of the app's Beta programme in the country. In the feature, users can create a ‘Space' that their followers can join to participate in a conversation. Anyone on Twitter can listen in on the conversation, though only the host can control who gets to speak. Twitter to bring Clubhouse-like audio chat rooms feature Spaces to desktops too

Bollywood superstar <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="salman-khan">Salman Khan</keyword> has invested in homegrown short-form video app <keyword id="40682" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chingari">Chingari</keyword>, the company announced on Friday. With Salman as <keyword id="3123392" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-brand-ambassador">global brand ambassador</keyword> and investor, Chingari said it is looking to augment its position as the market leader. The company, however, did not disclose the funding amount from Salman. The news came as Bengaluru-based telecommunication firm <keyword id="113830" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OnMobile">OnMobile</keyword> led a $13 million (nearly ₹95 crore) funding round in Chingari on Thursday. "It is our pleasure to have Salman on-board as one of our global brand ambassador and investor. We are confident that our association will power Chingari to scale greater heights in the near future," said Sumit Ghosh, Co-founder and CEO, Chingari. The app currently has more than 56 million users in India. Bollywood actor Salman Khan invests in short-form video app Chingari

According to industry sources, <keyword id="55852" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galaxy">Galaxy</keyword> F12 is tipped to come with True 48MP camera, 90Hz refresh rate and a 6000mAh battery. It will be powered by 8nm Exynos processor, making the Galaxy F12 extremely power efficient, the sources told IANS on Thursday. Galaxy F02s is likely to sport a 6.5-inch HD+ display and a 5000mAh battery with 15W fast charging. Both Galaxy F12 and Galaxy F02s will feature premium haze and matt finish. Samsung had earlier launched Galaxy F62 for ₹23,999. The smartphone has the flagship Exynos 9825 under the hood, the same chip that powered Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. Samsung Galaxy F12 and Galaxy F02s to launch in India next week

The Indian government banned both <keyword id="6409600" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PUBG-MOBILE">PUBG Mobile</keyword> and PUBG Mobile Lite on September 2 last year. The news of PUBG Lite's shut down was confirmed by the developers <keyword id="10155974" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="krafton">Krafton</keyword> via a message on its official website. "We are deeply grateful for the passion and support from the astounding number of PUBG Lite fans that have been with us. During the strenuous times of the Covid-19 pandemic, we hope that PUBG Lite was able to provide our fans a fun way to stay safe," the developer said. "Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to close service after much deliberation and the time has come for our journey to end. We regretfully inform you that service of PUBG Lite is scheduled to end on April 29th, 2021 (UTC)," the company added. PUBG Lite Facebook will be open even after the game service termination until further notice. "We would like to convey our sincerest apology as well as our deepest appreciation to everyone. PUBG Lite to officially close down globally on April 29

Sri Lanka has temporarily halted its <keyword id="10199226" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccination-programme">COVID-19 vaccination programme</keyword> as there was a delay in securing <keyword id="11033857" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="more-astrazeneca-vaccines">more AstraZeneca vaccines</keyword> from the <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword>, a top health minister has said. Sri Lanka launched its inoculation programme late January when <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> gifted 500,000 doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca. Till Thursday 913,219 people out of the island nation's 21 million population had been <keyword id="178509" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccinated">vaccinated</keyword>. Vaccination programme has been halted from Wednesday night due to the need to use the available Oxford-AstraZeneca doses for the second jab of those already vaccinated, primary health care and COVID-19 prevention minister Dr Sudarshani Fernandopulle was quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror newspaper on Friday. She said the COVID-19 vaccination programme was temporarily suspended as there was a delay in securing more <keyword id="6409874" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="astrazeneca">AstraZeneca</keyword> vaccines, the report added. The Serum Institute of India (SII) recently suspended exports of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The WHO has recommended that the second jab must be made available within 12 weeks of the first. The second dose was to be administered from April 19, the report said. After the free gift, Sri Lanka placed an order for more doses of the Indian vaccine. The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, <keyword id="9617748" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covishield">Covishield</keyword>, has been developed in collaboration with SII. The Pune-based vaccine major has entered into a collaboration with the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca to manufacture the vaccine. The Serum Institute had curtailed exports in the recent weeks. So, Fernandopulle said that Sri Lanka was not able to gain any assurances on the arrival of the next consignment from India in time. This week China donated 600,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccines. However neither the local health regulators or the WHO have approved its emergency use. Officials said the Chinese vaccine will be administered on the Chinese workers in the country. <keyword id="60468" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consumers">Consumers</keyword> spent $32 billion on in-app purchases across <keyword id="75489" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IOS">iOS</keyword> and <keyword id="6355629" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> Play globally in Q1 this year, the biggest quarter ever and 40 per cent from the same quarter last year, a new report has revealed. The market grew at unprecedented speed during the Covid-19 pandemic as millions stayed home, and smartphone users spent around $9 billion more on apps and games in Q1 2021 than they did in Q1 2020, according to app analytics firm <keyword id="1646890" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="App-Annie">App Annie</keyword>. The growth in Q1 2021 was shared equally by the two platforms. Consumers spend grew 40 per cent (year-over-year) to $21 billion on iOS, and by the same percentage to around $11 billion on Google Play. "Total downloads also grew significantly. Downloads on both iOS and Google Play combined rose by around 10 per cent to 31 billion in the quarter," the report mentioned. In Q1 2021, gaming proved to be the most influential category in the overall app market. <keyword id="53249" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gamers">Gamers</keyword> downloaded around a billion titles every week in the quarter, while total consumer spend on gaming hit $22 billion. iOS gamers spent the most at $13 billion (up 30 per cent on-year), while gamers spent $9 billion on Google Play (up 35 per cent). In Q1 2021, gamers downloaded around a billion games every week. "This is 15 per cent up on 2020, and 35 per cent up on the weekly average for Q1 2019. Google Play game downloads grew 20 per cent year over year to 11 billion," said App Annie. The quarter's most downloaded game was Supersonic Studio's hyper casual survival game 'Join Clash 3D'. It swapped places with Among Us! at number 2. In 2021, mobile gaming is set to reach $120 billion in consumer spend, 1.5 times all other gaming formats combined, said the report. On Google Play, in terms of spend, Games, Social and Entertainment saw the strongest quarter over quarter growth while on iOS, the largest categories by growth were Games, <keyword id="5129" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Photo">Photo</keyword> and Video and Entertainment. Consumers spend record $32 billion on apps in Q1 2021 globally, says new report

The <keyword id="11033040" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ongoing-phase">ongoing Phase</keyword> 3 clinical trial of the Pfizer/BioNTech's Covid-19 <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> showed that it remains highly effective for up to six months after the second dose, the two companies announced. Results from the analysis of 927 confirmed symptomatic coronavirus cases observed in their pivotal Phase 3 study showed the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, BNT162b2, was 91.3 per cent effective against the disease, measured seven days through up to six months after the second dose, Xinhua news agency reported citing a joint statement issued by the companies on Thursday. The vaccine was 100 per cent effective against severe disease as defined by the US <keyword id="116293" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centers-for-Disease-Control-and-Prevention">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</keyword>, and 95.3 per cent effective against severe Covid-19 as defined by the <keyword id="54048" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Food-and-Drug-Administration">Food and Drug Administration</keyword> (FDA), according to the statement. Safety data from the Phase 3 study have been collected from more than 12,000 vaccinated participants who have a follow-up time of at least six months after the second dose, demonstrating a favourable safety and tolerability profile, it added. "These data confirm the favorable efficacy and safety profile of our vaccine and position us to submit a Biologics License Application to the US FDA," said Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO of <keyword id="44612" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword>. "These data also provide the first clinical results that a vaccine can effectively protect against currently circulating variants, a critical factor to reach herd immunity and end this pandemic for the global population," Ugur Sahin, CEO and co-founder of <keyword id="3124139" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BioNTech">BioNTech</keyword>, was quoted as saying in the statement. The new results came a day after the two companies announced that the vaccine has demonstrated 100 per cent efficacy and robust antibody responses in a trial in adolescents 12 to 15 years of age. The trial enrolled 2,260 adolescents in the age group in the US. In the trial, 18 cases of Covid-19 were observed in the placebo group versus none in the vaccinated group. The vaccine elicited SARS-CoV-2-neutralising antibody geometric mean titers (GMTs) of 1,239.5, demonstrating strong immunogenicity in a subset of adolescents one month after the second dose, according to the companies. The results exceeded those recorded earlier in vaccinated participants aged 16 to 25 years old, according to the trial data. The two companies plan to submit these data to the FDA and the European Medicines Agency as soon as possible to request expansion of the Emergency Use Authorization and EU Conditional Marketing Authorization for BNT162b2. The FDA authorised the Pfizer-BioNTech Cvaccine for emergency use in the US in December last year. The vaccine, the first one to receive an FDA approval in the country, was authorised for use in individuals 16 years of age and older. Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine highly effective up to six months after second dose

<ul><li><keyword id="14509" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajinikanth">Rajinikanth</keyword> is one of the most loved and highly-paid actors in Asia, who holds a mass appeal.</li><li>His unique sense of dialogue delivery and the swiftness of his actions helped create the brand ‘Rajinikanth’.</li><li>Earlier this week, Rajinikanth said that he is disbanding his political party.</li></ul>Sivaji Rao Gaekwad has had it tough, early on in his life. After schooling, he took up various jobs and worked as a carpenter, coolie and finally a bus conductor in Bangalore. Born in Bangalore in 1950, Gaekwad worked as a bus conductor in the 1970s before he made his debut in Tamil cinema in 1975 with the film Apoorva Ragangal. Gaekwad was reincarnated as Rajinikanth. But this story is not about his filmography. This is an effort to look back at his complete volte-face on politics. Earlier this week, the Dadasaheb Phalke award winner said that he has disbanded his political party putting an end -- seeming once and for all -- to his noncommittal tryst with politics. In Tamil Nadu, movie stars taking a plunge into politics has always been a norm. Movie stars like J Jayalalithaa and M G Ramachandran, commonly known as MGR, have been chief ministers of the state representing the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). AIADMK’s rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (DMK) former leader, late M. Karunanidhi also wrote scripts and dialogues for films. So, when it came to Rajinikanth, the public expected him to follow the same path. He first dipped his toe into the arena back in 1996, by campaigning against the then chief minister Jayalalithaa. His speech against the former actress stated, “If Jayalalithaa is voted back to power, even God cannot save Tamil Nadu," causing shockwaves and leading to the defeat of the AIADMK in the elections that year. Bus conductor, movie superstar and people’s favourite Rajini’s appeal to masses comes from his encapsulation of the working class and labourers in the roles he chooses. For example, in his film Muthu, one of the songs — Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalali — talks about the role of equality and humanity. Another song Naan Autokaran from the movie Baashha captured the attention of the auto drivers association as the song praised the community. While his mass appeal and stardom in south India helped the DMK in the 1996 Assembly Election, it was not the same in 1998 when the General Elections took place. The DMK was only able to secure 9 seats out of 39. Since the defeat, Rajini has steered clear of politics for more than six years and focused on his film career and personal life. Political and ‘not so’ political phase After the failure he faced in the 1998 general elections, in 2004 he entered into politics again by raising his voice against the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and supported the AIADMK-BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) alliance as PMK had created a big ruckus against his film ‘Baba’. Though Rajinikanth did not change his opinion on Jayalalithaa, he supported the alliance thinking that the BJP will work for ‘linking all the rivers in the country’ to solve the drinking water crisis. His efforts against PMK was all in vain once again as the party won only 5 seats in the Lok Sabha election. Later in the same year, the BJP-AIADMK alliance was not able to win even a single seat in the state assembly election that followed. Meanwhile, he was changing the trend and style of Tamil cinema with his mannerisms and unique dialogues. “Nan oru thadava sonna nooru thadava sonna madhiri”, (If i say it once, its equivalent to having said it a hundred time) -- a punch dialogue from the movie Baashha and “En vazhi thani vazhi”(My way is a unique way) from Padayappa are something which people celebrate even today. Rajinikanth goes through a crisis The Tamil Superstar was about to appear in Rana, a period film to be produced by his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth and directed by K. S. Ravikumar. But he suffered a mild foodborne illness in the sets for which he had to undergo medications. After that he was rushed to St. Isabel's hospital, in Chennai, for breathlessness and fever. He was also admitted to the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute in the month of May for respiratory and gastrointestinal problems. In this phase Rajinikanth was completely hospitalised and did not indulge in politics much except for his support to the AIADMK in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections in 2011. In 2014, his political stature grew as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the actor at his residence before the general elections. Both of them denied that there were no political indications in the visit, but it seemed like both held each other in great regard. After that the BJP put in all the efforts to make Rajinikanth join the party thinking about his stardom and the 1996 elections. <div type="image" title="Graph of his political journey" msid="84464061" hostid="261"></div> Finally the wait was over He started to meet his fans across Tamil Nadu and gave a hint that he was entering politics in 2017. Just before the New Year, he organised a fan meet-and-greet — an event went on for six days. Fans from more than 20 districts were present at the meet. Finally, he addressed the gathering at the Raghvendra hall in Chennai on December 3, 2017 where he opened up about his entry into politics. Soon after his announcement, the ‘Rajini fans welfare association’ was transformed and established as a political party named ‘Rajini Makkal Mandram’. He visited the Himalayas for his movie ‘Baba’ which was released in the year 2002 and started to breathe spirituality back into his life and this was regarded as the reason he chose the ‘Baba symbol’ as the logo for the mandram. However, he has always mentioned that he will be into “spiritual politics”. U-turn happened Even after his announcement regarding the entry to politics, Rajinikanth decided not to take part in the 2019 general elections and also clearly said that his party, Rajini Makkal Mandram will not support any political party in the Lok Sabha elections. Rajnikanth finally ended the suspense and tweeted on 3 December, 2020 that he will bring back his political party in January 2021. The people were expecting the Rajini Makkal Mandram, to take part in the 2021 state election in Tamil Nadu. He also stated that the public wants transparent, honest, corruption-free, secular, caste-less, and spiritual politics. Chaos comes to an end Though he nodded yes to politics, the superstar of Tamil cinema, announced clearly on July 12, 2021 that he has no plans to enter politics, after a discussion with the ‘Rajini Makkal Mandram’. He also added that the Mandram has been dissolved. A separate meeting happened with the party authorities in the Raghavendra Mandapam (hall) in Kodambakkam on 12 July, after which the actor announced his decision in a press meet. He stated that the party will be back to ‘Rajinikanth Fans Welfare Association’ with the same members. In his Twitter account, he released a notice announcing the decision.
