The UK-based group also accorded two stars to <keyword id="21402083" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Honda-Amaze" source="keywords">Honda Amaze</keyword> for adult and zero stars for child occupant safety. <br /><br /> It also gave three stars in adult safety and five stars for child occupants to <keyword id="20774736" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Carens" source="keywords">Kia Carens</keyword> after the latest round of crash tests. <br /><br /> The highest score on a vehicle crash test is five stars, while the lowest score is zero stars. <br /><br /> "We were disappointed to see Mahindra's one star rating for the Bolero Neo. Global NCAP accords low safety rating to Bolero Neo, Amaze

Sports utility vehicles are driving the overall growth of the domestic passenger vehicle segment. <br /><br /> As per the latest SIAM data, SUV sales account for 60 per cent of the overall passenger vehicle sales in the country. <br /><br /> In an interaction with PTI, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Managing Director <keyword id="1890649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shailesh-chandra" source="Orion">Shailesh Chandra</keyword> said the company has a leadership position in some of the SUV sub-segments and is looking to consolidate in others. <br /><br /> "The SUV segment is going to be an intensely fought segment. The top three-four players will have just a few thousand (units) here and there. SUV segment to see intense competition among players: Tata Motors

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, <keyword id="26680" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nitin-gadkari" source="Orion">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> on Tuesday launched <keyword id="3367686" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bharat-ncap" source="Orion">Bharat NCAP</keyword>, India's own crash testing safety programme, saying that it was a historic day for the country and that requests have been received for crash testing of 30 models.<br /><br />Addressing a gathering following the launching of Bharat NCAP, <keyword id="6361025" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gadkari" source="Orion">Gadkari</keyword> said: "Today is a very important day in the history of Indian automobile industry but even also it is important for the society. I really appreciate the way in which the Indian automobile industry cooperates and because of their cooperation today it is a time for all of us that we are launching the Bharat NCAP programme."<br /><br />Regarding the programme, the Minister said: "It was a mission of the government. Cost of testing from abroad is Rs 2.5 crore and in India under the Bharat NCAP it is Rs 60 lakhs. And with global standards your market is going to increase. I am really happy that it is helpful for the consumers. By the star rating people can understand the quality of the product and now we are going to create awareness in the mind of the people."<br /><br />He also said that there is a huge demand for higher star rating vehicles.<br /><br />"People are cautious about safety, pollution. People want to use different type of fuel. If anywhere there is a new alternative available then they are ready to use," he said.<br /><br />"Today we have got a request to test and certify 30 models from several manufacturers. We have received 30 vehicles for the rating under Bharat NCAP and I am happy with the response."<br /><br />Gadkari also highlighted that India is facing two important challenges -- one is road accidents and another is air pollution, and "in some way our Ministry is responsible for that".<br /><br />He said that every year 5 lakh accidents and 1.5 lakh deaths takes place in India.<br /><br />"Every day 1,100 accidents and 400 deaths and every hour 47 accidents and 18 deaths. 70 per cent death is of 18 to 34 years and loss of GDP is 3.14 per cent."<br /><br />He also said head on collisions killed 27,000 people, while 18,000 died due to side collisions.<br /><br />Emphasising on saving lives, Gadkari said that "this is the time we have highest priority for how we can save the lives of the people and road safety is the most important thing for that".<br /><br />"But it is not that only the automobile industry is responsible, somewhere road engineering is a big problem."<br /><br />The Minister further said that at the same time the other important factor is automobile engineering. But these are the things we need to improve. He also said that now the market is not only cost-centric but quality centric.<br /><br />"Now the most important thing which I feel is that the market, the market is not cost centric, but it quality centric. The automotive market in India has been changing lately with consumer's focus shifting from being cost-centric to quality-centric," he said.<br /><br />He also said that "our dream is to make Indian Automobile industry above Rs 15 lakh crore".<br /><br />"When I had taken charge as the Minister, our industry in the world was at number seven. Now just two to three months before we have surpassed Japan and now are at number three. First is China and second is US."<br /><br />Gadkari also said that many of the Indian brands of two wheelers are already exporting 50 per cent of their production and there is also a lot of technologically changes particularly in the form of using different type of fuels.<br /><br />"I am very sure about it that as far as cost is concerned we are very very competitive in the world and in the quality point of view if you are equal to that anywhere whatever the cost maybe in US even I am confident that a day will come that we will be equally reasonable with China also and day will come that people will prefer cost wise and quality wise that they will prefer our vehicle first," he said, adding that for that reason there is huge potential available for the export.<br /><br />"The dream of Prime Minister (<keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>) to make India a 5 trillion economy is the basic backbone of the automobile industry, which is one of the largest employers, biggest export and biggest tax payer sector for the government. Nitin Gadkari launches Bharat NCAP, India's car crash test programme

New Delhi, Jan 15 () Tata Motors on Wednesday said its upcoming premium hatchback Altroz has received the highest 5-star adult safety rating by Global NCAP, an internationally renowned safety accreditation body.
<p> Altroz has become the second passenger vehicle brand after Nexon to get the 5-star adult safety rating from the Global NCAP.
</p><p> Nexon had received the distinction in December 2018.
</p><p> The company said the Altroz has also achieved a 3-star rating for child occupant safety.
</p><p> "The Nexon was the proverbial guiding light for us in this aspect, and the Altroz has followed its footsteps, setting a new benchmark across the industry safety standards," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Business Unit (PVBU) President Mayank Pareek said in a statement.
</p><p> This latest Global NCAP score reaffirms that the company stands by its commitment to make the best in global car safety, accessible to Indian customers, he added.
</p><p> "Being an industry first in the hatchback segment in the country, this is in lockstep with our objective to deliver mobility solutions that possess advanced technological features alongside providing robust protection for the occupants," Tata Motors President and Chief Technology Officer Rajendra Petkar said.
</p><p> Tata Motors said the Global NCAP evaluated the car for both front and side impacts. The combined evaluation of both the tests have resulted in a full 5-star rating, it added.
</p><p> The auto major is looking to increase its penetration in the domestic passenger vehicle segment with entry into the premium hatchback segment with Altroz later this month.
</p><p> With Altroz joining in its passenger vehicle portfolio, the company aims to enhance its presence to around 60 per cent of the total passenger vehicle market.

Tata Altroz gets 5-star adult safety rating in Global NCAP test

New Delhi, Jan 21 () Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) on Tuesday said its compact SUV XUV300 has received five-star rating for adult occupant protection from Global NCAP, an international safety accreditation body.
<p> The XUV300 becomes the first Indian vehicle to score the highest points among all five-star rated cars tested so far by Global NCAP, the auto major said in a statement.
</p><p> The vehicle also becomes the first Indian vehicle to score a four-star child safety rating, it added.
</p><p> "This is a proud moment for Mahindra as the 5-Star rating reiterates our unstinted commitment towards safety. Today's conscious buyers rate safety as a top priority while making their purchase decision and we have designed the XUV300 to be one of the safest vehicles in India," M&amp;M President-Automotive Rajan Wadhera said.
</p><p> This recognition will further spur the company as well as the Indian automotive industry to achieve similar safety standards for the entire range of vehicles on Indian roads, it added.
</p><p> The model comes with many first-in-segment safety features including seven airbags, disc brakes on all four wheels, front parking sensors and heated ORVMs.
</p><p> Commenting on the development, Global NCAP CEO and President David Ward said the XUV300 has scored the highest combined crash test result of all the cars tested in India till date.
</p><p> "We are delighted with this hugely positive outcome in our #SaferCarsForIndia campaign. It's a vitally important win for Indian consumers and sets a safety challenge that every manufacturer must now be measured against," he added.

With the upgradations in the safety measures introduced by the company—including making a Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) for driver and passenger a standard for all variants of the model — the homegrown car has now been updated with a five-star. <br /><br />According to the update, Nexon scored five stars for Adult Occupant Protection, while, for Child Occupant Protection, the car was rated at three stars. The ratings have been marked on the basis of safety equipments and protection offered by the company.<br /><br />Following Tata’s Nexon is Mahindra Marazzo achieving a four-star rating on the list. Mahindra Marrazzo offering features such as double airbags, ABS, SBR for driver and ISOFIX anchorages achieved two-stars for Child Occupant Protection. <br /><br />The latest results mark the safety of cars in India. The domestically manufactured cars showcase the capacity of Indian <keyword id="44718" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Car-market">car market</keyword> to achieve remarkable results in terms of safety, design and performance, said David Ward, secretary general, Global NCAP.<br /><br />“The model offers good protection for both adult head and neck, marginal protection for the driver chest and adequate protection for passenger chest,” stated Global NCAP. <br /><br />“The pedals showed some risk for the lower legs due to their displacement. Tata Nexon becomes the first Indian car to score a 5-star rating in global crash test standards

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword>'s <keyword id="4684024" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Model-y">Model Y</keyword> received top marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.</li><li>The tests indicated excellent performance in front and side collisions and rollovers.</li><li>Ample crumple zones, a fortified chassis helped the Model Y receive a five-star rating.</li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.</em></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> This is Tesla's Model Y acing one of many impact tests. Here it is again and again. The crossover received the highest marks in every test, making it one of the safest crossovers on the road, a similar designation Tesla has seen with the Model 3. But it's no surprise. The Model Y is based mostly on the Model 3's platform, and both <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> received a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is what makes Tesla's first crossover so safe.</p><p>In the event of a collision, protecting passenger survival space is paramount, and all modern cars are designed to do so. But EVs have a huge advantage. The absence of an engine provides ample space for a crumple zone in frontal impacts. This can be seen in Model Y's frontal-impact test when the vehicle is slammed headfirst into a barrier at 35 miles per hour. As the hood of the car slams into the barrier, it crumples and absorbs the impact, preventing the passenger cell from collapsing and harming the dummy inside. Since Model Y is larger than Model 3, its body structure has been fortified to account for the additional mass of the vehicle. This results in less of the hood crumpling for the Model Y, creating a larger survival space for occupants.</p><p>In side-impact tests, the crossover has significantly less space to absorb the forces of a crash. This is where you can really see Tesla's structure do a lot of heavy lifting. The pillars, side sills, and fortified battery pack mitigate the intrusion of a crash. This gives the side airbag enough time to deploy and cushion the impact on passengers. This is tested in two ways. The first is a side-barrier test, in which a sled that acts as a car is rammed into the driver's side of the Model Y at 38.5 miles per hour. This simulates a T-bone collision. Here you can see just how rigid Model Y's structure is. The sides crumple less than the hood in the frontal crash, again preserving survival space for the occupants. The second test, the side pole impact, simulates an accident with a tree or pole. In this test, the impact is much more concentrated, which pushes the boundaries of a car's structural integrity. The roof and side sills prevent the impact from protruding further into the driver's survival space. While there's no data on Model Y's roof strength, we can look to Model 3 to get a better understanding of how the roof is able to absorb the brunt of the impact in this test. In 2019, the Model 3, the same platform as the Model Y, earned the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any EV the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety had ever tested, resisting more than 20,000 pounds. It's that same rigidity that awarded the Model Y five stars in the side pole test.</p><p>At just 7.9%, the Model Y's rollover risk is one of the lowest ever recorded for an SUV by the NHTSA. This is directly related to the car's low center of gravity, thanks to the heavy battery pack that sits on the floor of the vehicle. In Tesla's in-house test, you can see how the Model Y continues to return to an upright position -- even when it's shot off the side of this hill.</p><p>For Tesla, safety is engineered into the design of every car. It has been improving the architecture of its vehicles since the Model S in 2012. Building the Model Y from the Model 3's platform all but guaranteed a safe vehicle. The further fortified structure and larger crumple zones are a testament to its commitment to vehicle safety.</p>

But check out how rigid the structure of the Taycan is. The roof barely deforms. And the A-pillar, the metal support on the side of the windshield? It doesn't even flex. A rigid structure, though, isn't the only thing that Porsche did to try to make the Taycan safe. With help from safety expert Euro NCAP, we broke down some of the features that put Porsche's all-electric sports car in the company of the safest cars of 2019 and also identified some improvement areas for the Taycan.</p><p>We talked about how rigid the structure of the Taycan is. Well, that shows itself again in crash tests like the frontal offset deformable barrier and the frontal full width test. In this test, where Euro NCAP sends the Taycan at 40 mph into a barrier representing another car, you can see how stable the Taycan's cabin is. In this diagram, the dummies representing the driver and passenger were green across the body, sustaining only slight injuries to the knees and femur. Euro NCAP reported this as "adequate" protection, a good result.</p><p>Now, while the rigidity of the Taycan may mean a more stable cabin, we've seen how passengers benefit in crashes where certain parts of the car around them actually give way or crumple, like a piece of paper. In crashes, these "crumple zones" dissipate the energy of a crash instead of passing it on to the passengers inside. For the Taycan, in the full-width barrier test, the protection of all critical body areas was "good" or "adequate" for both occupants, with the exception of the rear passenger's chest. The forces on the chest indicated a "marginal" level of protection, one step down from "adequate." The Porsche crumples, but perhaps how it crumples could be tweaked to improve the safety of the rear passenger in this type of collision.</p><p>In these seat and head-restraint tests, Euro NCAP propelled a dummy with a realistic spine on a sled at both 10 and 15 mph, mimicking a rear collision. This is the type of crash most likely to inflict a neck sprain or whiplash injury. In general, manufacturers design seats so the headrests are as close to the back of an occupant's head as possible. As you can see by the orange in these diagrams, Euro NCAP assessed only "marginal" protection for the seat and head restraints in both the front and rear seats.</p><p>We talked about how Euro NCAP assesses how safe the occupants of the Taycan are. But Euro NCAP also assesses how safe "vulnerable road users," your pedestrians and cyclists, are if a Taycan hits them. One of the ways Euro NCAP tests this is by dropping a weighted ball with sensors on it, which is meant to simulate a pedestrian or cyclist's head, on different parts of the hood. Euro NCAP rated protection as "good" or "adequate" at almost all test locations on the hood.</p><p>Part of the assessment of the Taycan's ability to keep people safe is the car's ability to recognize a dummy on the road and stop automatically. How did the Taycan do? Well, in these tests, the Taycan's autonomous emergency braking detected cyclists well and avoided or mitigated crashes in most cases. However, with pedestrians, the Taycan didn't do so well. In some tests at both night and day, the Taycan detected pedestrians and slowed but still injured the pedestrians.</p><p>Overall, Porsche's Taycan received a five-star rating by Euro NCAP, the same rating as Tesla's Model X, Ford's Explorer, and BMW's Z4, other cars in Euro NCAP's Executive class. While the Porsche Taycan scored five stars, it only scored in the eighth percentile of all five-star cars in its class tested in 2019, a group of 43 cars in total. While Euro NCAP assigned the Taycan "good" protection scores for many of the crashes simulated, a "marginal" whiplash rating in rear collisions for adult occupants and average detection of pedestrians are issues that Porsche can and should take a look at to improve the safety rating of the Taycan.</p>

Three, two, one.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: This crash looks bad, but you'd actually be safer than you think, much in part thanks to a key missing component. An engine. And it's one of the many features that makes <a href="https://www.tesla.com">Tesla's</a> <a href="https://www.tesla.com/model3">Model 3</a> sedan ultrasafe in crashes.</p><p>This test is called a frontal offset test. And this car? Tesla's much anticipated Model 3. It's an all-electric plug-in, meaning that the front compartment doesn't have an engine like a normal combustion car would. Instead, all the empty steel and aluminum at the front of the car crumples, drawing the shock of the crash away from the occupants.</p><p>Look at this footage of the cabin. The passengers are entirely unscathed. In fact, in this test conducted by safety experts <a href="https://www.euroncap.com/en">Euro NCAP</a>, the dummies representing the driver and passenger were green across the body, meaning the two were well protected.</p><p>A large crumple zone isn't the only special feature that makes the Model 3 safe. The Model 3 received top overall marks in multiple tests, like roof strength, head restraints and seats tests, and autonomous driver-assistance systems tests, much in part due to the advanced safety technology special on the car.</p><p>With help from safety organizations <a href="https://www.iihs.org">IIHS</a> and Euro NCAP, who performed the crash tests, we'll break down some of the features that put the Model 3 among some of the safest cars ever built.</p><p>Let's talk about passive safety first.</p><p>Passive safety refers to the systems that keep you safe in a crash. So, it mainly focuses on things like airbags, seats, and structure of the car. In the roof-crush test, you can see just how good the structure of the car is. Roof strength speaks to the ability of the car to protect occupants in rollover crashes. During the test, the car's roof resisted more than 20,000 pounds of force. That's more than if five Model 3s were placed on top of the car's roof at once. The roof earned a higher strength-to-weight ratio score than any other fully electric vehicle IIHS has ever tested. IIHS gave the roof an overall evaluation of G, or Good, their highest rating.</p><p>Aiding the Model 3's rollover rating is its all-electric power-train design, the focal point of which is a large, heavy battery at the floor of the car. While we don't have footage of a Model 3 in a rollover test, the heavy-battery-in-the-floor system is similar to that of the Model X SUV, shown here, a significantly taller car with a naturally higher center of gravity. You can see how the battery in the floor lowers the overall center of gravity, helping the car return to an upright position. We've seen how the front of the Model 3 crumpled, sparing the cabin the brunt of the shock of a collision.</p><p>But airbags, seat geometry, and restraints also contribute to a higher occupant-protection score. The Model 3 has a thick curtain airbag and uniquely shaped front passenger airbag that help protect a passenger's head from the car's A pillar and center screen.</p><p>You can see where the dummy's head, which is smeared in greasepaint, contacted the airbag. While passive safety covers what happens in an accident, active safety refers to the systems that help a car to avoid a collision in the first place.</p><p>The Model 3 has a suite of driver-assist systems designed to keep you from getting into an accident, including an automatic emergency-braking system that detects obstacles and stops the car on its own. To test this, IIHS had the Model 3 drive towards a stopped obstacle at 12 mph and 25 mph. The car earned a Superior rating in front crash prevention for automatically stopping at the obstacle both times.</p><p>The Model 3 stood out in Euro NCAP's passive safety tests.</p><p>The Model 3 scored an astounding 94% in the Safety Assist category for halting automatically for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as correcting inattentive driving.</p><p>Watch the Model 3 in this emergency-lane-keeping test, where the car crosses over a white line denoting the end of the lane towards an oncoming vehicle. The system intervenes, pulling the car back into the lane automatically.</p><p>While the Model 3 received top marks from IIHS and other safety organizations, it's one of many vehicles with excellent safety ratings. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Lexus ES 350 scored top marks in every category, while the Audi e-tron, another electric plug-in vehicle, also received IIHS's highest safety award. The organization has not yet rated the safety of the vehicle's other features, like its sides, roof, and seats.</p><p>The Model 3 is Tesla's first mass-market vehicle, though the company has not yet sold its $35,000 base priced version. While the vehicle has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-3-performance-first-drive-2018-8">praised</a><span> by </span><a href="https://www.motortrend.com/cars/tesla/model-3/2018/2018-tesla-model-3-dual-motor-performance-review/">reviewers</a>, it has also been<span> subject to production delays and reports of </span><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/tesla-model-3-wall-street-analysts-find-significant-fit-and-finish-issues-2018-8-1027480762">inconsistent quality</a>.</p><p>Tesla's semi-autonomous driver assistance feature, Autopilot, has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teslas-autopilot-faces-scrutiny-after-accidents-2018-5">come under scrutiny</a> from the National <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Safety Board. This eight-seater's interior is commodious for passengers and for cargo, and sports a long list of features inside the cabin and under the hood. The 2022 Telluride is a beautiful family vehicle for drivers looking for a three-row SUV packed with practical equipment.</p><p>The 2022 Kia Telluride earned a great score on its <a href="https://www.jdpower.com/cars/2022/kia/telluride">J.D. Power reliability rating</a>, standing out among midsize SUVs. On both types of tracks, the Telluride provided a great ride and handling experience.</p><p>The Telluride's powertrain and brakes are both powerful and responsive, and the tech features like the head-up display significantly aid the driving experience, easily showing up in the driver's line of sight.</p><div type="image" title="2022 Kia Telluride" height="3500" width="2333" msid="88860994" hostid="261"></div><p>I had no problems maneuvering the Telluride over a steep dirt hill, through a puddle, and over a loose log bridge. The SUV offers a grippy, grounded feel, even around inclined corners.</p><p>The exterior design looks cool, and the interior is extraordinarily comfortable, providing numerous tech features that are reasonably easy to figure out how to use.</p><p>With all these tech features at their fingertips, drivers will feel tricked out in the sumptuous cabin — and downright safe while they're driving on the streets or on rough terrain.</p><div type="image" title="2022 Kia Telluride" height="2333" width="3500" msid="88860996" hostid="261"></div><p>The Telluride comes standard with advanced driver technology that includes forward-collision assist, rear blind-spot collision avoidance assist, lane-keep assist, lane-follow assist, rear cross-traffic assist, reverse parking distance warning, smart cruise control and safe-exit assist. Further safety features include electronic stability control and rear occupant alert.</p><p>The 2022 Telluride earned a safety rating of five out of five from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, scoring five stars in the side crash test, four stars in the frontal crash test, and four stars in the rollover test. The 2022 Telluride has not been crash tested yet by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, but the similar 2021 model was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.</p><p>While the high safety scores and numerous features make the Telluride a sensible SUV, it also provides a practical amount of cargo space and hauling ability so you can pack up all your gear. In the back, the Telluride can stash up to 87 cubic feet of gear — or 21 cubic feet in the cargo area behind the back seats, which is pretty good for a midsize SUV.</p><div type="image" title="2022 Kia Telluride" height="2800" width="3500" msid="88860998" hostid="261"></div><p>The Telluride SX we drove included the Towing package ($795), adding the tow hitch and self-leveling rear suspension, which maintains the vehicle's ride and handling balance. Properly equipped, the Telluride can tow up to 5,000 pounds.</p><p>The Telluride's exterior also sports power-folding, heated outside mirrors with turn signals, a sliding sunroof, and a hands-free power liftgate that all come standard, streamlining your whole driving experience.</p><p>Our Telluride SX featured the added bonus equipment of the wolf gray paint ($495) and Nightfall edition package ($1,395), which included the 20-inch black alloy wheels, stylish black front grille, and black exterior trim.</p><p>Overall, the tech application, driving experience, and user comfort of the 2022 Kia Telluride make it a great choice for family-friendly luxury driving — and even if you end up on a beach at the coast or on a dirt road on your way to a winery, this Telluride can handle it with the best of its class.</p>

Review: The Kia Telluride is the perfect SUV for all your family's adventures

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="13197740" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lexus-ux" source="Orion">Lexus UX</keyword> is a subcompact SUV that debuted in 2018 for the "modern urban explorer."</li><li>The UX 250h is a <keyword id="12009667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hybrid" source="Orion">hybrid</keyword> version of the car, which targets buyers in their 30s. It starts at $36,425.</li></ul><p>The 2021 <keyword id="13197741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lexus-ux-250h" source="Orion">Lexus UX 250h</keyword> hybrid is small, squatty, and quirky, but not in a bad way — in an "I'm going mountain biking in Oregon" (or wherever you go mountain biking, I don't know) kind of way. It's oddly sporty, especially with its blue seat belts, blue paint, and blue accents weaving through the interior.</p><p>It's a weird vibe from a <keyword id="12453135" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lexus" source="Orion">Lexus</keyword>. Different. But you'll learn to love that, if you somehow don't already. </p><h2><strong>The Lexus UX 250h: An urban explorer</strong></h2><p>The UX line is fairly new, <a href="https://newsroom.lexus.eu/2018-the-new-lexus-ux/">debuting in 2018</a> as Lexus' smallest crossover offering designed for "the modern urban explorer" and "buyers in their 30s." The "UX" stands for "urban crossover," and in the automotive industry, "urban" usually means "extremely small." </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="3449" width="5173" msid="89648450" hostid="261"></div><p>The UX thus has hatchback-like proportions, making it look a lot more athletic and adventurous than your average crossover. It also comes in two flavors: the purely gas-powered UX and the UX hybrid, which start at $34,225 and $36,425, respectively.</p><p>The UX hybrid doesn't plug in — instead, the battery charges while driving. It also has standard all-wheel drive while the gas-only models have front-wheel drive, and since AWD is typically a $2,000 option, you might as well go for the $2,200 hybrid upgrade.</p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="2929" width="4742" msid="89648451" hostid="261"></div><p>Lexus' UX 250h hybrid has a claimed 181 horsepower and a <a href="https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a31517125/cvt-transmission-vs-automatic-quick-guide/">continuously variable transmission</a>, which fills the same role as an automatic for most drivers — ideally just with added fuel efficiency and smoothness. It comes with three trim choices: the regular UX 250h ($36,425), the UX 250h F Sport with sporty accents ($38,765), and the UX 250h Luxury with more comfort features ($41,465).</p><p>The UX 250h we drove for a week came from the bottom trim, with fees and optional extras bringing the final price to $41,840. The extras included: a $75 wireless charger; a $150 heated steering wheel; two $100 tablet holders in the rear seats; the $1,175 Premium package with a moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, and heated and ventilated front seats; the $1,020 Black Line Special Edition package with various accent features and a two-piece luggage set to match your car; and other features. The Premium package recently got a price increase to $1,515.</p><div type="image" title="Lexus' family of Black Line cars, including the black two-piece luggage set." height="2334" width="3500" msid="89648453" hostid="261"></div><p>The 2021 UX lineup got <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/lexus/ux-4-door-suv/2021#headlights">top crash ratings</a> in every category from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and an overall <a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings">five-star rating</a> from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, but where things get iffy are the headlights.</p><p>UX models got IIHS' lowest <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/lexus/ux-4-door-suv/2021#headlights">headlight safety ratings</a> when not equipped with the triple-beam LED headlight package (a $1,660 option), while models with the package got its highest headlight ratings. Just go ahead and put that into your budget, because being able to see the road is important.</p><h2><strong>What stands out: Young vi</strong>bes and a <strong>refined nature</strong></h2><p>The UX 250h isn't just cute — it's unexpectedly cute. Lexus carries a connotation of older and less adventurous — silver sedans and <a href="https://twitter.com/alanisnking/status/1417940618433732610">champagne SUVs</a>. But the UX 250h is young, fun, and colorful. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="2819" width="5168" msid="89648456" hostid="261"></div><p>There's a sporty exterior and a beautifully designed interior, from its textured seat bolsters and blue seat belts to its denim-like dashboard material and black headliner. Even with all of the blue accents, the car feels elegant. </p><div type="image" title="The Lexus UX Black Line black interior and blue seat belts." height="998" width="1361" msid="89648458" hostid="261"></div><p>One of Lexus' interior staples in recent years has been its touchpad-controlled infotainment system, which the company is phasing out now because <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/tech/40950/the-determined-employee-team-that-convinced-lexus-to-finally-drop-the-touchpad">touchpads are generally not great</a>. The UX 250h still has one, but you don't have to use it to adjust the radio or mess with other basic settings. There are buttons for that.</p><p>I didn't use the touchpad the whole week I had the car, and I thanked Lexus for having mercy on me with the buttons. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="3129" width="5090" msid="89648459" hostid="261"></div><p>The UX 250h isn't fast, but its transitions between electric and gas power are smooth — so smooth it's hard to tell the car is a hybrid aside from its silent startup and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCtpA67j4l8&amp;ab_channel=AssociatedPress">low-speed pedestrian warning sound</a> — and it never feels like it's struggling to get up to speed. It's agile yet comfortable as a commuter car.</p><p>Plus, it's a hybrid! Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are the perfect way to bridge the gap between our historical reliance on gas-powered cars and our electrified future, and the US Environmental Protection Agency <a href="https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&amp;id=43388">estimates you'll get 39 mpg combined</a> in the all-wheel-drive UX 250h. That's not a bad deal at all. </p><h2><strong>What falls short: Limited storage, tight rear seating </strong></h2><p>Not everything is perfect in the UX 250h's cozy interior. Its door panels are painfully plain. Back-seat passengers get vents but no climate control or seat heaters, and despite the front seats having heating and ventilation, the settings stay on even when you turn off the car. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="4165" width="2732" msid="89648460" hostid="261"></div><p>Because the passenger seat keeps the settings used by its last occupant even when no one is sitting there, you'll sometimes turn the car back on and won't realize it's heating or cooling the seat next to you — an annoying waste of energy. This happened to me almost daily in the UX 250h.</p><p>The back seats in the UX 250h are tight but not uncomfortable for people in the 5-foot-8 region, but go much bigger and you'll be pushing it. Rear cargo space is big enough to haul approximately 12 apples and a gel pen.</p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="5137" width="3425" msid="89648462" hostid="261"></div><p>The moonroof makes the inside of the car feel bigger, but it would benefit from panoramic treatment. With modern cars, it almost feels like standard-size moonroofs don't cut it anymore — the UX 250h's back seats would feel far lighter and more spacious if Lexus had gone full panoramic.</p><p>There's slight wind noise in the UX 250h on the highway, but that can easily be covered by a modest radio volume setting.</p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="2994" width="5184" msid="89648464" hostid="261"></div><p>What couldn't be covered in my loaner, though, were tiny scratches and dust on the shiny gray material outlining the car's shifter and touchpad. With only 564 miles on the odometer, it wasn't the greatest testament to how that stuff will hold up in the long term. </p><h2><strong>Our impressions: Perfect for the adult who still wants to have fun</strong></h2><p>I still don't quite know what a "modern urban explorer" is, but it's hard to imagine Lexus nailing that aura more than it did — in both the UX 250h's attitude and its usability. </p><p>The UX 250h has some drawbacks, sure. It's a little cramped for more than two people and some of the interior features could be better, but often the most important thing about a car is how it makes you feel. </p><div type="image" title="A blue Lexus UX 250h." height="5006" width="3337" msid="89648466" hostid="261"></div><p>When you park the UX 250h and turn around to give it a final glance before going inside your destination, you'll feel special. You'll feel quirky. You'll feel adventurous, like a modern urban explorer — even if you're just going inside your local grocery store. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Just like the <keyword id="116215" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mazda">Mazda</keyword> 3 before it, Mazda has given the CX-30 subcompact SUV a turbocharged engine.</li><li>The turbocharger makes the CX-30 Turbo a competitor against luxury automakers like BMW and Mercedes.</li><li>The CX-30 Turbo starts at $30,050. My loaner had a $35,400 price tag.</li></ul><p>Here's what we already knew: The perennial Mazda 3, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2021-mazda-3-turbo-review-hatchback-turbocharged-price-horsepower-specs-2020-11">when given a turbocharger, becomes zippy and fun</a>. Here's what we just learned: When you give that same engine to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-cx30-crossover-suv-geneva-2019-3">CX-30 subcompact SUV</a>, it <em>also</em> becomes a joy.</p><p>Not that the CX-30 wasn't already a joy, mind you. Clearly, Mazda did something right with it. After it was introduced in 2019, the little SUV rocketed to second-best on the automaker's 2020 US sales charts. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_12" height="3750" width="2500" msid="80770443" hostid="261"></div>Mazda <a href="https://insidemazda.mazdausa.com/press-release/mazda-reports-december-and-full-year-2020-sales-results/">managed to move</a> 38,064 CX-30s last year. It was second only to the ever-popular CX-5, which sold 146,420 examples.<p>You can get a far cheaper version of the CX-30 if you forego the turbocharger - $22,050 versus the $30,050 starting price from this version. I have no idea if buyers will take the bait on a more powerful CX-30 Turbo, but if enjoyment behind the wheel is something you generally look for in a car, then you'll find it here.</p><h2><strong>The 2021 CX-30 Turbo: A taller 3</strong></h2><p>As a subcompact SUV, the CX-30 slots between the CX-3 and the CX-5. And no, it's not a CX-4, <a href="https://www.autoblog.com/2016/04/26/mazda-cx4-china-official/">because that already exists in China</a>. That would be nice, though, if not logical!</p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_34" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770445" hostid="261"></div>If it helps, think of it as a taller Mazda 3, as the two share the same platform. Mazda did with the CX-30 what it did for the Mazda 3 Turbo: gave it the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder SkyActiv-G engine from the CX-5, CX-9, and Mazda 6 in the hopes for a more premium and upmarket push. Save for a few visual cues, The CX-30 Turbo looks largely the same as the non-turbo version. <p>The biggest difference surfaces when you drive it. </p><h2><strong>Details and safety ratings: Turbo time</strong></h2><p>The Skyactiv-G turbocharged engine produces a claimed 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque on 93-octane fuel. The power drops a bit to 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque on 87-octane fuel. In Turbo guise, the CX-30 is only offered with a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_38" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770447" hostid="261"></div>Note that the non-turbo versions of the CX-30 make 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. You can get them in either front- or all-wheel drive.<p>The car measures 14.4 feet long and stands 5.2 feet tall. Its maximum ground clearance comes to eight inches - a bit taller than the 3's 5.5 inches. Cargo volume comes to 20.2 cubic feet, or about the same as what the 3 hatchback offers. The EPA estimates the CX-30 Turbo to return 22 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_27" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770448" hostid="261"></div>The regular CX-30 earned five stars in its overall vehicle score when tested for crashworthiness by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, although it only got four stars for rollover risk. Last year, the <a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/mazda/cx-30-4-door-suv/2021">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety</a> awarded the subcompact SUV its highest award, the Top Safety Pick Plus.<h2><strong>What stands out: Delights in the act of driving</strong></h2><p>When building the CX-30, it's clear Mazda didn't set out to remake the idea of a car. Its goal was to merely build a car - and build it well - so that driving it would come easily and non-invasively to anyone.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_1" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770450" hostid="261"></div>The interior only features stuff you'd actually need, like the climate controls, radio, and navigation. There's a physical gear selector lever, not buttons with P, R, N, and D on them. The steering wheel has just a handful of controls on it. Only the driver's seat is powered; the passenger seat is manually adjusted. Some might say this is because the car is affordable. I say it's because most other cars have gotten far too complicated and expensive.<p>Once you do start driving, the steering is responsive and the brakes don't grab hard when you first begin to press the pedal. The addition of the turbo engine gives the car great pickup and acceleration, propelling its egg-shaped body forward with the gumption of a much smaller car. There's pep right off the line, lending a tangible eagerness to the CX-30 Turbo's mood.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_3" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770451" hostid="261"></div>I've found other cars in the CX-30's class show their price when it comes to road noise, vibration, and harshness, but the Mazda impressed with its sound deadening and smooth ride. The only real exterior noise came from the wind washing over its body. <p>Otherwise, highway cruising was just as polished as cars worth two or three times as much as the CX-30.</p><h2><strong>What falls short: It's called subcompact for a reason</strong></h2><p>I don't consider myself a large person, but even I thought the back seats in the CX-30 were tight. The trunk, likewise, was petite, and only would probably only fit one large suitcase plus <em>maybe</em> a large duffel bag. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_7" height="3750" width="2500" msid="80770454" hostid="261"></div>But as the car is classed as a subcompact, this is to be expected. Realistically, the CX-30 is for a two-person household that only sometimes needs to put friends or family in the back seat. A family with a small child or two could make it work, but they'd need to trade up for a bigger car as soon as those kids grew.<p>And while I appreciated the Mazda's devotion to physical buttons, dials, and switches, scrolling through menus on the infotainment screen proved clunky and slow. The CX-30's interface felt outdated when compared to the systems offered in competitor vehicles. This system, as <a href="https://www.thedrive.com/news/39126/mazdas-infotainment-system-is-designed-for-safety-but-could-be-so-much-better">The Drive</a> pointed out, makes selecting music difficult. </p><h2><strong>How the CX-30 Turbo compares to its competitors</strong></h2><p>A regular, 186-horsepower 2021 CX-30 <a href="https://www.mazdausa.com/vehicles/2021-cx-30">starts</a> at $22,050. With its 250 horsepower, the base price for the 2021 CX-30 Turbo jumps to $30,050. My loaner came in the top Premium Plus package and thus had a starting price of $33,900. After a few options and a destination charge, the final MSRP came to $35,400.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_8" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770458" hostid="261"></div>Price-wise, the CX-30 isn't exactly within spitting distance of the Mini Clubman All4 John Cooper Works (<a href="https://www.miniusa.com/tools/learning/models-build/config-options/select-trim-coopersclubman.html#/config/jcwclubman/build/0/">$39,500</a>), Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 (<a href="https://www.mbusa.com/en/vehicles/model/gla/suv/gla35w4">$47,550</a>), or the BMW X2 M35i (<a href="https://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/x-models/x2/sports-activity-coupe/performance.html">$46,450</a>). <p>But in power, it is. In this sense, you're getting quite a bit of engine for almost $10,000 less.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_37" height="3750" width="2500" msid="80770459" hostid="261"></div>Buyers might balk at the premium price that the addition of the turbo engine commands, but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mazda-3-turbo-is-no-mazdaspeed-3-represents-upmarket-push-2020-11">it's clear who Mazda is aiming for with this upmarket push</a>. And while the interior of the CX-30 is nice, it's still no Mercedes. <p>The newly turbocharged CX-30 and 3 drive well, but they are still based on entry-level cars from what, for a very long time, has been an economically focused brand. Keep in mind that the non-turbo CX-30 competes with the Jeep Renegade, Kia Seltos, and Subaru Crosstrek. Among those "entry-level errand-runners" (Mazda's words), it's king. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_22" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770461" hostid="261"></div>But against the existing luxury brands, ones whose lineups already include more powerful engines? Are consumers willing to shell out thousands more for what basically amounts to a turbocharged Mazda with all-wheel drive? Because it's asking a lot.<p>That remains to be seen.</p><h2><strong>Our impressions: It's fun!</strong></h2><p>Pleasant. </p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_15" height="1666" width="2500" msid="80770463" hostid="261"></div>That's the word that thumped around in my head during the time I spent with the CX-30 Turbo. I haven't driven many new cars I can confidently say feel like they have much of a personality, but the turbocharged CX-30's playfulness is palpable. <p>Its light-footedness and agility, paired with its eagerness off the line, make for an impish little SUV. With acute steering, good brakes, and torque on your side, you find yourself tucking around slower cars and tossing the CX-30 around corners with a bit more spunk than you would in something bigger and heavier. There's no reason everyday driving has to be a snooze<strong>, </strong>and Mazda has proven that.</p><div type="image" title="2021 Mazda CX 30 Turbo._KL_41" height="1667" width="2500" msid="80770464" hostid="261"></div>As an added bonus, there's even an off-road traction assist function that helps with any off-roading you might want to do. I'm not saying you should immediately take your CX-30 to the Baja 1000, but during low-traction situations such as over a blanket of hard-packed snow, the Mazda felt sure-footed. The 360-degree monitor, which remains active up to speeds of 9.3 mph, helped me see the terrain all around me.<p>Yes, the CX-30 is expensive and the room for rear passengers and cargo is a bit cramped. But it's undoubtedly a fun car wrapped up in a very unassuming package.
