According to an exchange filing, with a growing number of customers transitioning to 5G, Airtel is reallocating its mid-band spectrum to expand 5G services across the 1800, 2100, and 2300 MHz bands nationwide. The re-farming of the mid-band spectrum aims to provide customers with enhanced <keyword id="726530" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="browsing-speeds" source="Orion">browsing speeds</keyword> and improved <keyword id="2551158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indoor-coverage" source="Orion">indoor coverage</keyword>. As data demand escalates, Airtel is accelerating its spectrum re-farming efforts to deliver an exceptional 5G experience to its users. Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel, remarked, "As more customers pivot to our 5G services, we have re-farmed our mid-band spectrum which was being used for 4G services. With this, we are also ready to launch Stand-alone technology. This will mean that the <keyword id="2365216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel-network" source="Orion">Airtel network</keyword> will be the first network in India to run on both stand-alone and non-standalone modes allowing us to deliver the best experience in the market." Airtel has successfully piloted the switch between standalone mode (SA) and non-standalone mode (NSA) modes on its 5G network in select circles, including Rewari, Chennai, and Bhubaneswar, with encouraging results. This capability will enable Airtel to introduce new innovative applications, services, and solutions through open APIs, differentiated connectivity, and service-based architecture. In collaboration with smartphone Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Airtel will push NSA and SA combined binaries with carrier aggregation functionality, further enhancing the 5G experience. Over the past year, Airtel has showcased the power of 5G with numerous use cases that have transformed the way customers live and conduct business. Airtel accelerates 5G revolution by re-farming mid-band spectrum to meet surging demand, enhance browsing speed

State-owned <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> will start rolling out <keyword id="21279641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G-services" source="keywords">4G services</keyword> across the country from August, using completely indigenous technology in line with the government's "Atmanirbhar" policy, according to official sources. BSNL officials claimed to have recorded peak speed of 40-45 megabit per second on the 4G network which has been rolled out in the premium spectrum band of 700 megahertz (Mhz) as well as in 2,100 Mhz band during the pilot phase. The company has rolled out 4G services in Punjab using indigenously developed technology by IT company TCS and state-run telecom research organisation C-DoT-led consortium and onboarded around 8 lakh subscribers. "The 4G core developed by C-DoT is performing very well in the BSNL network in Punjab. It was installed in July last year. It takes 12 month to prove the success of such complex technology but the C-DoT core has stabilised within 10 months. BSNL will launch atmanirbhar 4G technology across the country in August," a senior government official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI. The core network is a collection of network hardware, devices, and software that provides fundamental services in a telecommunication network. Telecom regulator <keyword id="19942079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Trai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Trai">Trai</keyword> in a recent paper explained core as part of a network that offers the functionality of aggregation, call control, switching, authentication, charging, gateway functionality, etc. TCS, Tejas Networks and government-owned ITI have bagged orders worth about Rs 19,000 crore from BSNL for deploying 4G network which is upgradable to 5G. In a recent earnings call, Tejas Networks Executive Director and chief operating officer Arnob Roy said BSNL's mobile network is getting deployed across zones. He said that wherever the C-DOT core is not available on the BSNL network, the equipment is getting integrated to the existing core. "When the C-DOT core gets deployed in those circles, in those zones, they will get parented to the C-DOT core as well. Tejas Networks Limited. This is just a temporary situation where the RAN (radio access network) is deployed and in that zone, the core is not available," Roy said. BSNL is in the process of deploying 1.12 lakh towers for 4G and <keyword id="20041753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-services" source="keywords">5G services</keyword> across India. "The company has installed over 9,000 towers for 4G service across the country, out of which more than 6,000 are active in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP West and Haryana circle. BSNL has been selling 4G capable SIM only for the last 4-5 years. Only those customers who have older SIM will need to get new SIM to experience the service," a BSNL official said. BSNL to launch 4G services across India in August; to use indigenous technology

Signaltron founder Himamshu Khasnis told PTI that the chip used in the Sahyadri LTE base stations has been developed by Signalchip. Earlier in 2010, Khasnis and his team founded a fabless semiconductor company Signalchip to make chips for 4G and 5G networks. "Signaltron has built the entire system indigenously using India's first chips for 4G and 5G networks developed by Signalchip. This is the first time an Indian system running on an Indian chip for complex communication technology has been inducted into the army. Using indigenous chips gives a high degree of control on the security of the system in its operation," Khasnis said. He said the Indian Army had posted a bid on GeM (Government e-Marketplace) for the supply of 4G LTE NIB (Network In a Box) solution last year. "Signaltron proposed the Sahyadri NIB solution and came out successful in stringent technical trials. Subsequently, Signaltron also won the competitive bid to supply the equipment. Weighing just 7 kgs, Sahyadri Network In a Box (NIB) systems provide high-quality secure wireless communication for audio, video and data applications," Khasnis said. He said the Sahyadri NIB is capable of working in both standalone and cellular modes and capable of seamless inter-operation with legacy analogue and IP telephony systems. The majority of the base stations deployed in India are not made in India. Even the few that are made in India do not have indigenous chips inside, which is the most strategic and important component of modern electronic devices and equipment. Signaltron has supplied 20 units to the army and the deployment of the base stations depends on their strategic requirement, Khasnis said. "We have supplied 20 units to the army. The Army takes its own call on when and where to deploy base station. Since they are light and mobile units, it gives them the flexibility to change the location as per their requirement," he added. At present, there is no fabrication facility in India for modern semiconductor chips. Signalchip has designed the chip indigenously and owns the entire technology that the chips deliver. In a model similar to leading semiconductor companies like Nvidia, Qualcomm, Mediatek etc, Signalchip also gets its chips fabricated through third-party wafer fabs. Khasnis said the Indian base station market is expected to be about USD 24 billion by 2029. "With the use of indigenous systems, there could be significant savings to forex and also boost GDP. There are sizeable market volumes available in India and worldwide. Modernisation targets of different sectors like defence, railways etc. are excellent opportunities for indigenous solutions," he said. Khasnis said that the CNPN (Captive Network-Private Network) 4G/5G market worldwide is expected to cross USD 30 billion by 2030, which will enable large possibilities for the local chip-based base stations, thereby providing economies of scale. Indian Army inducts first-ever indigenous chip-based made in India 4G base station from Signaltron

Although it did not divulge the size of the deal, market watchers say that at BT's valuation of roughly USD 15 billion dollars, the deal could be in the ballpark of USD 4 billion. The shares will be purchased through Bharti Televentures UK, which is wholly-owned by Bharti Global. Bharti Televentures UK has inked an agreement with Altice UK to acquire about 9.99 per cent stake of BT Group's issued capital imminently with the rest about 14.51 per cent of BT's share capital is to be acquired post regulatory clearances. Telecom billionaire Patrick Drahi's Altice UK, the largest shareholder in BT, has been struggling with high debt. "Bharti Global, the international investment arm of Bharti Enterprises, a leading Indian business group with world-class companies in telecoms, digital infrastructure and space communications, has reached an agreement to acquire an interest in 24.5 per cent of the issued share capital of BT Group plc from Altice UK," Bharti said in a release. Bharti hopes the investment will further help create new synergies in the telecom sector between India and UK in the areas of AI and <keyword id="19916120" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G" source="keywords">5G</keyword> R&amp;D and core engineering among others, "offering great potential to collaborate on industry best practices and emerging technologies". It is pertinent to mention here that Bharti and BT have a relationship going back more than two decades. In 1997, BT acquired a 21 per cent stake in Bharti Airtel, and hence Bharti's latest move to acquire a 24.5 per cent chunk in the iconic British company marks a defining moment for the Indian telecom conglomerate. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises said: "Bharti and British Telecom (BT) have an enduring relationship going back more than two decades wherein BT owned 21 per cent stake along with two board seats in Bharti Airtel Limited from 1997-2001. Today marks a significant milestone in Bharti Group's history as we invest in BT - an iconic British company". Bharti's investment in BT aims to support the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties, the release said. It noted that during the recently concluded visit of UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy to India, the UK-India Technology Security Initiative was announced to expand collaboration in critical and emerging technologies across priority sectors including telecom. Sunil Mittal said: "This investment in BT aims to support the commitment of our Prime Minister towards his vision in elevating and broadening the India-UK ties. Bharti's own record of owning and operating telecom and broadband networks around the world is underpinned by placing customers, digital innovation and operational efficiency at the heart of its business". Shravin Bharti Mittal, Managing Director of Bharti Global said: "We review global investment opportunities in the world of technology from digital infrastructure to software. BT is well known to us from the long association with Bharti, so we are pleased to have this opportunity to acquire a significant stake in the company." Bharti believes that BT is poised for leadership in the telecom arena, especially home broadband services, he added. Meanwhile, BT Group, in a separate statement said the investment from Bharti is a strong vote of confidence in the future of the British telecom carrier and its strategy. Bharti to acquire about 24.5% stake in BT Group from Altice UK; deal estimated at $4 bn

Telecom operator <keyword id="1553175" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vodafone-idea" source="Orion">Vodafone Idea</keyword> (VIL) will make significant <keyword id="6362476" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments" source="Orion">investments</keyword> to roll out <keyword id="764355" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g" source="Orion">5G</keyword> network and expand <keyword id="122479" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4g" source="Orion">4G</keyword> coverage in the coming quarters, billionaire industrialist Kumar Mangalam <keyword id="39439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="birla" source="Orion">Birla</keyword> said on Friday. Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla group, which is one of the shareholders of the troubled telco VIL, was speaking at the inaugural session of India Mobile Congress. "In the coming quarters, Vodafone Idea will initiate significant investments in order to roll out 5G networks and further expand 4G coverage across the country. Moreover, the company is determined to realise the government's vision of establishing a robust supply chain in critical and emerging areas, including Open RAN (Radio Access Network)," he said. Further, Birla said this endeavour will enable innovative Indian companies to design both hardware and software for the global markets. "India's digital ecosystem stands on the brink of unprecedented growth," Birla said.

VIL will make significant investments to roll out 5G network: Birla

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The 5G rollout has been slow and underwhelming, not delivering on its promised benefits.</li><li>But there are blue skies ahead as 5G advancements finally arrive.</li></ul>At this point, it seems fair to call it: The arrival of 5G has been a little underwhelming.A few years ago, carriers and tech companies were heralding the arrival of 5G and hyping its possibilities. It would have huge capacity and low latency. It would be a boon for autonomous driving and the connected home. 5G would do it all.And then it didn't. Or at least, it hasn't yet.The 5G rollout has been slow and, at times, confusing. Rolling out a new network standard is always a juggling act that requires buy-in from governments, standards bodies, and other stakeholders.Still, there are reasons to be hopeful. Many companies at Mobile World Congress, which took place in late February in Barcelona, discussed new 5G technologies including 5G stand-alone and 5G-Advanced. These could eventually get us to 6G.<h2>More-advanced 5G technology is coming</h2>5G hasn't become widespread because carriers didn't have access from the get-go to the important bands of the spectrum, leading carriers to deploy versions of 5G using a hybrid system that piggybacks off 4G LTE.5G stand-alone has more promise. It's a 5G network that, yes, stands on its own — meaning it's running on its own technology, independent of 4G. Put more simply, it's the version of 5G we were once promised.The concept of 5G stand-alone isn't new, though it's taken time to arrive, largely because of the technical challenges of building a 5G core that delivers wide coverage. 5G stand-alone could allow 5G to flourish as intended.Another technology, called 5G-Advanced (sometimes called 5.5G), effectively moves 5G forward, promising improvements including faster data speeds and reduced latency."We're just right on the cusp of 5G-Advanced," Alex Sinclair, the chief technology officer of the mobile-network lobbying group GSMA, told Business Insider. "That's going to be finalized this year."Carriers and tech companies are heavily discussing 5G-Advanced. Huawei calls its version 5.5G, though that's really just a marketing term for the same technology.Sinclair said the specs for 5G-Advanced are expected to be finalized in the first half of this year. Huawei said at MWC that its version of 5G-Advanced would get "commercial use" in 2024.<h2>New ideas could get us to 6G</h2>It could be another six or seven years before the standard arrives in a meaningful way and we reach the promised land of blazing-fast movie downloads and reliable surgical robots. For that reason, the many discussions about 6G at MWC seemed a little premature.Anshel Sag, a principal analyst at Moor Insights &amp; Strategy, described Qualcomm's Giga-MIMO technology — an antenna array designed to increase 5G's data capacity while boosting the signal coverage — as an interesting approach to push the industry forward."It just kind of gives you that extra band of performance that maybe we'll need once we hit 6G in the next six or seven years," Sag said.Sag said that the industry is in a situation where 5G networks "haven't delivered on the promise they set out five years ago" and that he believes Qualcomm's approach could be the "right path" toward 6G.That's still a way off. For now, Sag said companies should focus on deploying 5G stand-alone, because none of the benefits of 5G-Advanced will be worth it without a fully stand-alone network. Sag described 5G-Advanced as "a motivation to get to stand-alone 5G faster.""I think it's kind of funny that we're talking 6G now, because we haven't actually fully rolled out 5G with stand-alone," Sag said, "and I think 5G with stand-alone will be what people expected 5G to be."

But to get the most value out of it, organizations should focus on how it interacts with the complementary technologies surrounding it, Dan Crawford, a strategy manager at Cisco, said."It's time to rethink our definition of connectivity," Crawford said. "Rather than viewing it merely through the lens of speed and bandwidth, let's start considering connectivity as a holistic experience."He said companies should focus on enhancing 5G's capabilities with other technologies, such as WiFi, and combine them with hardware and other infrastructure rather than relying solely on 5G to solve every business problem. "This approach makes the network more accessible for innovative applications to shape user experiences," he added.Crawford told Business Insider that this could be complex for some businesses. They often need to decide whether the cost and time needed to upgrade infrastructure and equipment to make it 5G-compatible is worth it.BI spoke with Crawford about these challenges, the types of complementary technologies that can help companies boost connectivity, and how they could unlock 5G's full potential.The following has been edited for length and clarity.What types of complementary technologies should companies focus on to enhance 5G's capabilities?WiFi is the most universal technology. We have computers, laptops, and other devices connected to WiFi, or if you're not relying on WiFi, they use some protocol that's cellularly connected. All these things will need to work together, but the one common factor is their touchpoints to the network.There's an entire ecosystem of devices and tool sets and general employee knowledge that is necessary to be built up to support something that is centered on a single technology like 5G.While the complexity of 5G might seem daunting for companies, especially with the added challenges of existing technologies, we have a responsibility to simplify connectivity for service providers, enterprises, and, ultimately, the end users.We're also trying to remove siloes that have existed. A mobile network has always been siloed from the physical broadband network. There are reasons behind it, but now, how do we integrate them to be sure the experience is seamless and flawless?How does breaking down siloes and focusing on complementary technology benefit businesses?If we can shift our mindset, 5G could very well usher in a new age focused on multiaccess user experiences. There is a likely future where consumers will never need to know whether they are connected to WiFi, 4G, 5G, 6G, or whatever next-generation connectivity technology comes next. If experience expectations are being fulfilled, how users are connected won't matter.The network elements for 5G are designed to distribute roles to empower companies with control, access, and insight. It gives a business the tools to operate similarly to how it is today without feeling like they're handing off the communicative arm of its IT to an entity. If the power goes out or the networks go down, how much will it impact your business? No business wants to forecast that risk in their planning.With 5G, that control can be migrated into the business instead of businesses having to hire experts to understand what mobile networks look like and negotiate the handoffs between a public network and a private network. It simplifies all of that.It's a simplification tool that extends and expands the reach of what a business can do today across the globe.What advice do you have for companies to derive the most value out of 5G?The first thing is understanding your use cases and having a good grasp of your existing technology stack. The following has been edited for length and clarity.My company, Shared Access, has been working with the Crystal Palace Football Club in London for years to improve <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-5g-technology-leaves-connectivity-legacy-in-olympic-host-cities-2024-8">connectivity</a> at its stadium, Selhurst Park.It started when Vodafone approached Shared Access to help build a system for the stadium that ensures great service even when all 30,000 fans are trying to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">use their phones at once</a>.Last year, the Crystal Palace team came to us for help supporting a specific cohort of fans: those with visual impairments. In partnership with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givevision.net/">GiveVision</a>, they were working on deploying headsets that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-tech-innovations-behind-paris-olympic-games-connectivity-timeline-2024-8">stream live match footage</a> directly to fans with partial sight, allowing them to sit anywhere in the stadium but see every moment in sync with the pitch action — and they needed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">faster connectivity</a> to make it happen.<h2 id="a62d967b-58dc-4173-a02e-13c9a124d3fe">The existing networks weren't cutting it</h2>Before coming to us, the team working on the project tried running the headsets over WiFi, but there was too much latency. People using the headsets experienced everything on a slight delay, with the fans around them reacting to something on the field before they could see the action.The 4G network that we'd previously deployed with Vodafone, and even public 5G networks, weren't going to do the job. Public networks have a lot of firewalls and protocols that create additional delays, such as the need for data to travel from the stadium to the core network of a mobile operator outside the stadium and then back to the user. It's also difficult because the number of other users using the network inside the venue slows things down.We decided to install a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-private-wireless-connectivity-changing-airport-experience-aviation-mwc-2024-10">private 5G network</a> with an on-site core in the stadium. This allows for fully enclosed connectivity within the venue, avoiding external data transfer and eliminating the security-protocol challenges of major mobile-network operators. It provides nearly instantaneous performance, with faster speeds than 4G and even purer 5G speeds than most public users experience. Additionally, because the club has total control over who can use the network, it can ensure all the bandwidth goes to these headsets only.On September 21, we officially launched the program, making Crystal Palace FC the first football club in the world to offer a permanent vision-enhancement system at its stadium for fans with sight impairments. Since we've launched, we've seen more fans with visual impairments who previously didn't think coming to a game was worth it show up and have a great experience.<h2 id="aeed7829-1de0-4bc7-8572-0328ee6a1095">Future applications for private 5G networks</h2>While helping these fans see is more than enough justification for implementing this private network, there are also so many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-edge-computing-5g-cloud-artificial-intelligence-2024-3">opportunities</a> for how the tech could be used.For instance, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/barcelona-market-la-boqueria-5g-ar-personal-shoppers-2023-9">food and beverage vendors</a> could use the private network to power their tills, allowing the stadium to expand its food offerings to areas that previously didn't have strong enough connectivity. Security cameras could be installed in places where it's physically too difficult to get power and fiber wiring. Broadcasters may be able to use private 5G to get footage out more quickly, and without having to deploy as much equipment to the stadium, which would reduce the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-how-5g-tech-could-curb-environmental-impact-2024-7">carbon footprint</a> of their work.It doesn't have to be just sports, either. I'd suggest any kind of venue to consider: What are your problems? What are the things you'd love to do but think you can't because of connectivity?Ultimately, having the foundation of this private network allows so much room for creativity in terms of what you can layer on top of it. Twelve months ago, I'd never heard of GiveVision's headsets, and it had never thought about using a private 5G network, so this collaboration ended up being perfect. Who knows what other applications are out there? I hope other partners and vendors collaborate just as imaginatively to come up with possibilities.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Russia outfitted its Shahed-136 drones with SIM cards and antennae, a war expert said in a new report.</li><li>The adaptation, first observed in late 2023, appears intended to help with navigation and strike capabilities.</li></ul>Russia equipped its deadly attack drones with cellphone parts to help improve their targeting capabilities, a war expert noted in a new report.Jack Watling, a senior research fellow and a land warfare expert at the UK-based Royal United Services Institute think tank, highlighted in a report last week that Russia has placed SIM cards in its explosive Shahed-136 drones and mounted antennae on the wings."These were used in two ways," Watling wrote in a September 6 <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/rusi-defence-systems/tactical-opportunities-and-risks-mobile-phones">analysis</a> about the risks and opportunities of mobile phones on the battlefield."First, the UAV used the network to assist with navigation by triangulating off the bearings of mobile phone masts," he said, using the term UAV to describe an unmanned aerial vehicle."Second," he said, "the Russians were sending telemetry data from the UAVs back through the mobile phone network to help plan follow up strikes."The Shahed-136 is an Iranian one-way attack drone that Russia has been using to strike civilian infrastructure and energy facilities across Ukraine for two years. It has a range of more than 600 miles and carries a warhead of nearly 100 pounds.These notorious drones are relatively cheap compared to other Russian weapons like ballistic or cruise missiles and can be launched in swarms in a bid to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses. Moscow also has a locally produced version of the Shahed called the Geran-2.<div type="image" title="Wreckage of a drone amid dirt and rubble." height="1298" width="1732" msid="113268439" hostid="261" sizebytes="131854"></div>Russia's use of the cell network in Ukraine is not all upside, though. There are vulnerabilities as well."There is of course something rather suspicious about a mobile phone travelling at 350 kmph, and so these behaviours could be tracked, and it is possible to cut off SIMs identified as being used for such malicious purposes," Watling wrote."This is only possible, however, if the mobile phone network has effective relationships with security organisations," he said.Russia appears to have been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/downed-russian-shahed-drone-found-with-ukrainian-sim-card-2023-12">using SIM cards to help direct and pilot</a> its Shahed drones since late 2023, when Ukrainians discovered 4G modems that connect to the country's Kyivstar telecommunications network in drones that had been shot down.Cellphones and related technology have played a role on both sides of the war, with Russia and Ukraine using enemy signals to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russian-soldiers-rely-phones-to-fight-ukraine-risks-killing-them-2024-7">aid in their targeting</a> and strikes. Cellular data, for instance, can be used to pinpoint the location of large troop gatherings, which can then make soldiers vulnerable to attacks.Some militaries are trying to rein this behavior in. Russia, for instance, has repeatedly, albeit unsuccessfully, tried to get a handle on this problem. And recognizing the challenge, US Army officers have also been warning American forces that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cellphones-can-get-you-killed-modern-battlefield-army-officer-2024-4">bringing personal devices</a> to a future fight could have serious consequences.However, Watling argued militaries shouldn't view phones solely as threats."Soldiers should plan to leverage the advantages of these networks and be properly informed about the associated risks and accompanying mitigations," he said. "Used properly, mobile phone networks can help militaries to hide in the noise, distribute critical data, and deconflict with civilian authorities."

But "with the expansion of 5G technology, the XR healthcare market can expand its reach as the network grows," she said.However, development won't be equal everywhere in the world, she added."With the growth of the 5G network, we can expect to see the XR healthcare market expand," Hoek said. She added that nearly 20 countries around the globe still lacked 4G connectivity but could be brought up to date using 5G. The tech could even help stores develop personalized promotions based on customers' individual preferences, Lindsell said.The chief technology officer also foresees doing similar work for real-estate and travel agents, both of whom could offer immersive virtual-reality experiences around homes and tourist destinations using 5G-powered headsets.<h2>Parm Sandhu, vice president of enterprise 5G products and services at NTT Ltd.</h2><div type="image" title="Parm Sandhu headshot" height="900" width="1200" msid="105762461" hostid="261"></div>Sandhu, the vice president of enterprise 5G products and services at NTT Ltd., a network-connectivity provider, sees huge growth potential in manufacturing, transport logistics, and healthcare with 5G."5G, and specifically private 5G, is acting as a catalyst that is driving customers toward change," he said. "It's not like we haven't had cellular or wireless-communications technologies in the past, but today we're seeing that 5G has caused a perfect-storm event, where customers who have been struggling with their Industry 4.0 digital-transformation projects, often due to lack of adequate communications technology, are now suddenly seeing the light at the end of the tunnel."What were previously stalled digital transformations have been energized by the reliable connectivity inherent in private 5G connections. For instance, Schneider Electric has turned its factory in Lexington, Kentucky, into the US's first smart factory, using 5G provided by NTT. "Currently, the site showcases IoT connectivity, edge analytics, and predictive analytics to drive sustainability and energy efficiency on a private 5G network," Sandhu said.Alongside Schneider Electric, NTT has customers including Frankfurt Airport (Europe's largest private 5G network) and the city of Las Vegas (the largest private 5G network in the US) signing up to develop private 5G and edge-computing capabilities."NTT is not looking at private 5G in isolation but rather as part of a complete edge strategy," he said.

4 tech leaders on where 5G is taking their industries next 

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The Games' need for a massive infrastructure project has historically hurt host cities' environments.</li><li>Installing and using 5G technology could help minimize the Olympics' environmental impacts.</li></ul>When thousands of the world's best athletes descend on one city, it can wreak environmental havoc.No single Olympic Games held between 1992 and 2020 was sufficiently sustainable, found <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=c0d989491c74099378a20091f3e16aba6129c646e40d4b337bf98c0f4ca076c3&amp;postID=66a274b6d290cb433ad39ab1&amp;postSlug=paris-olympics-how-5g-tech-could-curb-environmental-impact-2024-7&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41893-021-00696-5">a 2021 study</a> in the journal Nature that assessed the environmental impacts of the Games during that period.For example, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games damaged the city's local environment when an estimated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mdpi.com/2076-0760/12/3/166#:~:text=During%20the%20seven%2Dyear%20preparation,Azevedo%202015%3B%20Zimbalist%202017).">77,000 people in favela communities were displaced</a> to make way for the event's infrastructure, according to a retrospective report published in 2023 in the journal Social Sciences.From an environmental standpoint, the Rio de Janeiro Games <a target="_blank" href="https://katoikos.world/analysis/olympics-a-celebration-for-humanity-a-disaster-for-the-environment.html">produced</a> more than 17,000 metric tons of waste, used 29,500 gigawatts of electricity — the majority of which was not from renewable sources — and resulted in 3.6 million metric tons of carbon emissions, the Rio de Janeiro Games reported.For the Paris Games, limiting environmental impact has been a greater concern than in past Olympics, with efforts across industries to reduce waste. Rather than build a series of new venues, existing ones have been repurposed. <a target="_blank" href="https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/our-commitments/the-environment/infrastructures">Only one new permanent venue was constructed</a>, and there's more <a target="_blank" href="https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/our-commitments/the-environment/organising-more-circular-games">renting than buying</a> when it comes to equipment like furniture to reduce waste. Sustainability initiatives also extend to the 5G technology powering the Olympic Games.Orange, the telecommunications provider for the Paris Games, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.orange.com/en/allconnected/paris2024/paris-2024-how-orange-will-limit-its-environmental-impact">has set itself the goal</a> of limiting its carbon emissions to 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide. If met, Orange's carbon emissions would account for less than 1% of the total estimated emissions of the 2024 Olympics.It's the latest example of how 5G providers are supporting sustainability efforts at global-scale live events."As sustainability initiatives around large public venues gather steam, we know IT teams are being asked to find ways to contribute to their organization's decarbonization efforts," said Kevin Swank, the product-marketing director at CommScope, a service provider that has worked on sports stadiums in France, Germany, and the US.<h2 id="1d0215d6-49e6-4444-b194-294cf1e5f1bd">Environmentally friendly technology that can support more fans</h2>Though 5G systems require infrastructure installation, their technology is more sustainable than older connectivity systems like analog distributed antenna systems, Swank said.Digital 5G systems use less power and less cooling than older systems, which need large amounts of power and cabling to run, Swank told Business Insider. And because 5G systems run digitally, they don't require as much physical infrastructure as their predecessors, Swank added.He said he witnessed the positive impact — on the environment and the fan experience — when CommScope updated the internet infrastructure at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.commscope.com/globalassets/digizuite/965502-atandt-stadium-cs-115933-en.pdf">AT&amp;T Stadium in Arlington, Texas</a>, the home of the Dallas Cowboys, in 2020."The venue was reaching the performance limits of its equipment, and its current network just couldn't keep up with the growing demands of a mobile-device-centric fan base," Swank told BI. The stadium needed a 5G network that could support augmented-reality features and mobile-ordering capabilities for concessions for up to 100,000 visitors at a time.By switching to 5G, the stadium's network performance increased tenfold, while its power use went down by about 87% and its cooling requirements decreased by up to 75%, a project report from CommScope said. Those reductions equate to over 100 metric tons in CO2 emissions savings a year, Swank said.The stadium's 5G system resulted in just five equipment storage racks compared with the 30 to 40 racks previously required for its analog equipment.Because of these advantages, 5G is quickly gaining steam within the entertainment industry as events continue to grow in scale and attendees expect more seamless experiences.<h2 id="4de8c9b0-599e-4fa3-9e87-59f5acb6ad1c">Recycling 5G equipment for more sustainability</h2>To work toward its carbon-emissions goal for the Paris Games, Orange decreased its equipment manufacturing and infrastructure-deployment footprint. Orange, in partnership with the consultancy Carbone4, estimated that 86% of its global footprint came from those two areas.For the Paris Olympics, the company is using more local suppliers and shipping bulky items by sea rather than air to reduce emissions. Orange said it planned to rent one-quarter of its equipment and estimated that 75% of the equipment would be reused or redeployed after the Games.Generally, the 5G networks used at sports venues' large events can be reused after the events end and the increased capacity is no longer needed, said Kelvin Chaffer, the CEO of Lifecycle Software, which provides support systems for network operators."By designing infrastructure that can be repurposed for other community uses postevent, and implementing green technologies and sustainable practices," Chaffer said. He added that this approach gives large sporting event organizers the ability "to minimize the environmental impact of event-triggered infrastructure projects."

How 5G technology is helping curb carbon emissions and waste at the Paris Games

Mid-band 5G provides enough coverage and speed difference from 4G to be notable for many businesses. High-band 5G is millimeter wave, also known as mmWave, and though it has faster speeds, the coverage area isn't as large.Depending on their business, a founder may want to choose any one of the three. A concert venue could benefit from mmWave, where many devices connect to the internet and send data.<h2>Consider Internet-of-Things solutions</h2>Elina Lidere is the head of innovation ecosystems at LMT Innovations, Latvia's leading mobile operator and 5G innovator. She works with startups and international organizations such as NATO in their 5G research-and-development efforts. She told Business Insider that one mistake she repeatedly sees founders make is failing to consider different ways companies can use 5G.LMT works with a guiding principle: "The future is only mobile." Lidere said it's helped her imagine what's possible when it comes to leveraging 5G's capabilities. "In the near future, everything could be connected, including things that, maybe today, you can't imagine being connected."Despite 5G's ability to power the Internet of Things, or IoT — allowing machines to talk to one another — many founders have a hard time shifting away from how we currently think about connectivity, which requires a level of human involvement. Think: human operators sending data across WiFi or other connections.Lidere said that once she challenges founders to move beyond their existing thinking and consider IoT solutions in their products, that's where the magic happens. She said that the shift toward IoT can often be the most enticing part for investors.<h2>Take advantage of research-and-development labs, accelerators, and hackathons</h2>Not everyone knows a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-leaders-where-5g-taking-industries-next-2023-12">5G expert,</a> but it's still possible to access their knowledge through labs, accelerators, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/colorado-springs-used-5g-smart-city-2023-7">and other programs</a>.In addition to working at LMT, Lidere also mentors at accelerators and hackathons, events where computer programmers and other specialists collaborate intensively over a short time to create code. Her day job allows her access to LMT testbeds, where she's helped test <a target="_blank" href="https://innovations.lmt.lv/news/latvia-holds-the-worlds-first-nato-operational-5g-experiment-testing-ar-vr-solutions-in-the-military-field/">augmented-reality and virtual-reality solutions for NATO</a>. Universities such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cambridgewireless.co.uk/programmes/innovation/5g-private-testbed/">Cambridge</a> and the National Science Foundation have hosted 5G accelerators, and telecommunications companies such as AT&amp;T have labs working to advance innovation.<h2>Don't forget about security</h2>Lidere said that as much as tech should be practical and easy to use, it should also be safe — something she sees a lot of startups overlook. More specifically, she said, founders can get lost in ensuring a killer use case and aesthetics, but forget entirely about security, leaving their products <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/private-5g-network-cybersecurity-threats-2023-10">vulnerable to hackers</a> and data breaches.She suggested this is likely the case because we're not yet used to the concept of all these new devices being connected to the internet and interacting with each other versus being connected to the internet and being told how to interact. Ensuring a secure product is paramount for startups looking for growth and partnership opportunities with larger companies.While 5G is inherently secure, connecting numerous IoT devices can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iot-devices-security-concerns-5g-networks-2023-11">pose certain security risks</a> since many devices mean a larger potential target for hackers. Business owners should be sure to keep IoT devices up to date and ensure device permissions are confined to their specific needs.

German automaker <keyword id="6361865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword> will kick off its electrification journey in India with the launch of its electric car ID.4 later this year as part of its global efforts of mass electrification, a senior company official said on Thursday. The company, which unveiled the ID.4, expects the Indian passenger vehicles market to grow 5-7 per cent this year while it is targeting 10-15 per cent growth for itself. "Our first step to the electrification journey in India begins with the ID.4...," Executive Director Sales International Operations, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Michael Mayer said here at the Volkswagen annual brand conference. He said the ID.4 is being brought in as part of the company's global efforts of mass electrification. It will be launched in the Indian market later this year. Globally, VW is leading in the electrification journey, he said, adding, as part of the company's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement 2030, it is continuing efforts in various spheres, including the development of charging infrastructure that's key to acceptance of EVs, recycling of batteries, digitalisation and connectivity solutions. The company is offering different products from ID.2 to ID.Buzz globally targeting several segments of customers, Mayer said, adding that globally, VW's electric vehicle (EV) sales grew 21 per cent at around 4 lakh units in 2023. The Indian automotive industry is now ranked third in the world even surpassing Japan, Mayer said, adding, "Who would have thought it ten years back?" He said VW is committed to the Indian market and the company will continue to introduce its premium products over the next few years. Volkswagen Passenger Cars India Brand Director Ashish Gupta said the company's sales grew 8 per cent in 2023. The company had sold around 44,000 units. "Our target this year in 2024 is to increase it by 10-15 per cent," he added. The company will continue to expand its sales and service network to tap opportunities coming from Tier II and Tier III cities. He said the company is targeting to have a presence in 170 cities with 230 sales and pre-owned car touch points along with 150 service centres in 2024. Last year, it had set up 45 sales and service touch points, he said, adding that at present, the company has 193 sales and pre-owned car sales touch points and 145 service centres in 145 cities.
