Today, the date marks the second anniversary of a horrible crime that shook the very soul of our nation, or so we think. Two years back, a 23-year old Delhi girl was brutally assaulted and raped in a moving bus by five men, and the incident was heavily reported in media because of the level of heinousness those men had shown. 
 
Even before the incident happened, eve teasing, molestation and rape were three words that were not that unheard of in India. Although, after that particular incident, there has been a sudden shift in the way our society looks at men, each and every one of them. 
 
However, the question is, is it justified? 
 
It is true that our society is full of perverts who consider women to be inferior to them in all manners, and think of themselves as the masters of the objects they see girls as. It is true that rapes are as much an issue in the country as is corruption. It is true that eve teasing has even happened in rallies against eve teasing, but looking at all men with raised eyebrows is surely not a way to deal with the problem. 
 
A few days back, there was a video in which two college-going girls were seen thrashing and abusing three men who reportedly molested and abused them in a moving bus. Within no time, the issue gained the attention at many social media platforms, with the hashtag #RohtakBravehearts trending. 
 CM awards were announced, the driver and conductor of the bus were suspended and the molesters were incarcerated. <keyword id="74452" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Haryana-government">Haryana government</keyword> was even applauded for taking a quick action in such a sensitive issue. 
 However, soon after that video, another video surfaced, showing the two girls beating someone else in a park in Haryana. This was followed by a video showing the female passengers of the bus coming out in the open and saying that the boys didn’t tease or molest the girls. Just when the matter was heating up, an <keyword id="348574" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="independent-journalist">independent journalist</keyword> <keyword id="2643368" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepika-Narayan-Bhardwaj">Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj</keyword>, who is associated with the issue of men suffering because of false cruelty and dowry charges under Section <keyword id="974500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="498A">498A</keyword>, smelled something foul in the case and took it upon her to unearth the hidden facts. 
She, in association with the team of The Logical Indian, explored some shocking facts in the case and made a small video about it, unearthing several cases where the Rohtak sisters filed false cases or made false charges for extorting money from boys’ families. Called <a href="http://thelogicalindian.com/story-feed/exclusive/final-face-rohtak-sisters/">The Final Face of The Rohtak Sisters</a>, the video was uploaded on <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword>, TLI’s website and <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, and has been seen by hundreds and thousands of people by now. 
 
As we all got to know about the details which were not taken up in the first few days of the incident, an uglier side of Women Safety in India has come to light, the side where not women but men are the victims. 
 
We got in touch with Deepika and below are the excerpts from her interview: 
 
How did you smell that there was a foul play involved in the incident? 
To tell you the truth, I had applauded the girls when I had first read about the incident, but then my co-activists said that being someone who knows the ground realities of false charges against men, how can you be so sure that the girls are telling the truth? This made me a bit skeptical; being from Haryana myself, I could easily relate with this incident because this is unfortunately a common sight in roadways buses. However, when I repeatedly heard the video, I heard what most of the people ignored. The women in the bus were asking the girls to leave the boys in their thick Haryanvi accent. I understood the accent, which made me wonder why the women were supporting the boys. Also, in Haryana Roadways, if such cases happen, the boys are asked to vacate the bus, which was not done in this case. All these loopholes made me have a closer look at the story and I decided to go and interview the boys to know their side of the story. 
 
You have been working for this cause for long now. How bad is the situation? Can you share some data? It is very unfortunate that sensitive issues like rape and molestation are being used to extract revenge or extort money from men. I am primarily working for issues related with Section 498A, where men are falsely accused of demanding dowry. According to the data shared by <keyword id="83267" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-Commission-for-Women">Delhi Commission for Women</keyword>, 1,466 of the 2,753 rape cases registered between April 2013 and July 2014 were found to be false. This is an alarming number, and we as a society, need to be more aware about such incidents before we jump on to conclusions that men are always at fault. Almost 1,500 false cases were filed for a highly sensitive issue like rape from June 2013 to July 2014, which reflects that there is an uprise in people making bad use of such laws. 
 
Coming back to the Rohtak incident, where is the investigation headed? Any updates? 
I know as much about the case as everyone else. Special investigation teams have been formed to investigate the case, and polygraph tests of three accused boys and those sisters would be done. There are 9 witnesses of the incident, including the conductor and driver of the bus, and I hope that they do not act partial towards any party. This incident can prove to be a landmark in such cases, and people should know that just because the complainant is a woman doesn’t mean that she is a victim. 
 
You shared a newspaper clipping on your Facebook profile that the girls are demanding a probe into the documentary you made? Have you been served any notice? 
No, none as of yet. Although if they do plan to serve me a notice, I have enough evidences to prove that I wanted to interview them too, but they didn’t agree to it. 
 
 
 
You have been working in this field for quite some time now. What do you think should be done for better laws? 
Well, I would like to appeal for two things. One, the media should be impartial and show both sides of the story before jumping to conclusions that make catchy headlines. In this incident, had the media acted fast and dug for details, the scenario would have been different. Also, the laws should be like this that no man who molests a lady should be let go but at the same time, no woman who falsely accuses someone should be left free to do the same thing again. Recently, a woman was reported to have filed 100 false cases against different men. This should be stopped. People should not feel free to misuse the law. The theory of “Guilty until proven innocent” should not be practiced in these cases. 
 
It also happens to be the second anniversary of <keyword id="1490015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Delhi-gang-rape-case">Delhi gang rape case</keyword>. What do you think has changed? There is no doubt that ‘<keyword id="6363203" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Crime-against-women">crime against women</keyword>’ is a concern in our society, and that after that particular incidence, there has been an uprise in awareness about women safety. Although there are certain wrong issues that have come up too after that incident; it is necessary to draw a line between true and false cries of women. When we talk of the role equality plays in a better society, we should talk about equality and not only women development. The laws need to be stricter and the police department needs more personnel. 'Crime against women' is a serious concern but so is rising crime rates everywhere in India. We as a society need to question where we are headed.

Two Years To Delhi Gang Rape; In Conversation With Someone Who Thinks Even Men Deserve Safety

New Delhi, The Delhi High Court has held that mere acquittal of a person in a criminal case cannot be a ground for granting divorce and dismissed a man's plea seeking a decree of divorce in his favour, claiming that his wife committed cruelty on him. A bench of justices <keyword id="20039759" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suresh-kumar-kait" source="keywords">Suresh Kumar Kait</keyword> and <keyword id="19957780" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="neena-bansal-krishna" source="keywords">Neena Bansal Krishna</keyword> said the man's acquittal in a criminal case in a trial court does not wash away the cruelty committed by him of being involved with another woman during the subsistence of his marriage with his estranged wife. "<keyword id="20862327" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="marital" source="keywords">Marital</keyword> bonds are delicate emotional human relationships and the involvement of any third person could result in a complete collapse of trust, faith and tranquillity. Any sort of influence by a third person can just be a silent destroyer of the bond, leading to prolonged irreconcilable differences," the bench said. It added that such relations eventually become a ticking time bomb, where feelings of anguish, despair, rejection and disappointment get trapped and post explosion, the shrapnel of these suppressed feelings causes injury to everyone involved, whether directly or indirectly. The high court dismissed the man's appeal and upheld the trial court's order denying him divorce on the ground of cruelty. According to the facts of the case, the couple got married in 1982 and had two children. They started living separately in 1994. The man had claimed that his wife was disrespectful and had refused to take care of him and even assaulted him physically. He had alleged that his wife's conduct had shattered his peace of mind and he was compelled to do all the household work, including cooking and taking care of the children, and sought divorce on the ground of cruelty. However, the woman had claimed that her husband was involved in an illicit relationship with a much younger woman and when she came to know about it in 1993, differences cropped up between them. She had further said because of this illegitimate affair, the man had started living in a separate room, ill-treating her and making her life miserable since December 1993. The woman had also got a first information report (FIR) registered against her husband and his family members under sections 498A (cruelty) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the <keyword id="19898811" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-penal-code" source="keywords">Indian Penal Code</keyword> (<keyword id="19900921" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipc" source="keywords">IPC</keyword>). While the man's family members were discharged in the case at the stage of framing of charges, he was acquitted in 2013. The man had denied the allegation that he was involved in an illicit relationship but conceded that the other woman did come to live in his house as a governess to his children. The court, however, described it as a "fantastic" and "absurd" explanation, and said this is a case where section 23(1)(a) of the Hindu Marriage Act, which provides that no person can take advantage of his own wrong, comes into play in full force. "We, in the light of the blatant conduct of the appellant (husband) in showing scant regard to his matrimonial relationship, are compelled to observe that despite it being a failed marriage of over 40 years, granting divorce would be adding a premium to the wrong acts of the appellant. "While human emotions know no bounds and rules, but definitely, the human sensibilities emanating from the mind should have prevailed for an educated person like the appellant to have reigned his affections for a third person, with scant regard for the respondent who had reposed complete faith by entering into the vows of marriage with him," the bench said. "We hereby conclude that the additional district judge had rightly concluded that it was the appellant (husband) who was responsible for acts of cruelty towards the respondent (wife) and rejected the divorce petition," it added.

A Delhi court on Wednesday discharged senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in a case related to his wife <keyword id="138503" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunanda-Pushkar">Sunanda Pushkar</keyword>'s death in a luxury hotel here. Special Judge Geetanjali Goel passed the order in a virtual hearing. Tharoor thanked the judge, and said it was "an absolute torture for last seven-and-a-half-years" and that it was a "great relief". During the arguments, while police had sought framing of various charges, including 306 (abetment of suicide), senior advocate Vikas Pahwa, appearing for Tharoor, told the court that the investigation conducted by the SIT completely exonerated the politician of all the charges levelled against him. Pushkar was found dead in a suite of a luxury hotel in the city on the night of January 17, 2014. The couple was staying in the hotel as the official bungalow of Tharoor was being renovated at that time. Tharoor was charged under sections 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 306 of the Indian Penal Code by the Delhi Police, but was not arrested in the case. He was granted bail on July 5, 2018. Sunanda Pushkar death case: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor says it is a "great relief" after a special court lets him off

(Eds: Adds details)Mumbai, Apr 30 () Maharashtra reached the grimmilestone of 10,000-plus coronavirus cases on Thursday withthe detection of 583 new infections, while 27 more patientssuccumbed to the disease - 20 of them in Mumbai - taking thetoll to 459, said a state health department official.He said with the addition of 583 new cases,Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally stood at 10,498, a grim milestonewhich was achieved 53 days after the state recorded its firstinfection.The worst-affected Mumbai city alone reported a jumpof 417 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally to 6,061, hesaid.As many as 290 coronavirus patients have died in thecity so far, he added.Also, 27 more patients succumbed to the disease,taking the toll in the state to 459 on Thursday, said theofficial.Out of the 27 deaths, 20 were from Mumbai city, threefrom Pune, two from Thane, one each from Nagpur and Raigad, hesaid.The Thane division, which according to the healthdepartment, also comprises Mumbai city, has recorded a totalof 8,244 cases and 313 deaths so far, he said.The Pune division has reported 1,379 cases of COVID-19and 96 deaths so far. Tom Szczerbowski/Getty<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Twin bubbles" in financial markets are poised to peak in the second quarter, according to Michael Hartnett, the chief investment strategist of Bank of America.</li><li>He explains the factors that could end these displays of "irrational exuberance," and shares his investing strategy for right now.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul>The Federal Reserve has played an outsized role in simultaneously securing the longest <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-bull-market-longest-on-record-4-main-reasons-for-longevity-2018-8">equity bull market</a> and <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/us-economy-expansion-is-now-the-longest-in-history-2019-7-1028325678">economic expansion</a> in history.At every juncture since the Great Recession, the Fed has intervened with a lifeline. Most recently, it pumped billions of dollars into short-term lending markets last September when a cash crunch set in, and continues to provide liquidity. But there are unintended outcomes of these stimulative measures, according to Michael Hartnett, the chief investment strategist of Bank of America.In a note Friday, he pinpointed two broad areas where "excess liquidity" is brewing bubbles. And he provided multiple examples of their manifestations. The first bubble is in scarce yield assets.Sovereign bonds take the cake in this category. Bank of America data shows a record $481 billion flowed into bond funds in 2019 even as the value of negative-yielding debt soared to a record exceeding $16 trillion.This misnomer - investors chasing assets with sub-zero yields - was so prevalent last year that another strategist concluded he was seeing "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/market-crash-greatest-bubble-ever-in-danger-julian-emanuel-2019-8">the greatest bubble ever</a>." While Hartnett does not size the trend as such, it is clearly a bubble in his book. The second bubble he flagged is in scarce growth assets.For this one, Hartnett was armed with multiple examples of investments that have caught on like wildfire because of their prospective returns. Unsurprisingly, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/tsla-stock">Tesla</a> was his first example of present-day "irrational exuberance."Bulls like the company because it is a trailblazer in the electric-vehicle industry. But the past few weeks have been head-scratching: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stock-price-rally-dot-com-era-speculation-brian-yacktman-2020-2">shares soared</a> 141% and then fell 29% within just 25 trading days on no groundbreaking news. Many market watchers cited a combo of short sellers being squeezed out of their bearish bets and a contagious <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-stock-price-rally-causes-buyers-investing-advice-tom-lee-2020-2">fear of missing out</a>.Besides the Tesla phenomenon, Hartnett cited the boom of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/next-market-crash-etf-passive-bubble-worse-dot-com-bregman-2020-1">exchange-traded funds</a> as another example of irrational behavior. Despite all the cost and diversification benefits of ETFs, he noted that a whopping 2,712 of them have been created over the past two years.Yet another sign of growth excess that Hartnett cites is the private equity industry's bid to offload $1.5 trillion in unspent capital by lurching into shadow banking. According to <a href="https://files.pitchbook.com/website/files/pdf/2019_Annual_US_PE_Breakdown.pdf">PitchBook</a>, the five-largest PE closes in 2019 were for buyout funds.<h2>How the bubbles burst</h2>Given the trends outlined above, the big question is when and how it all ends.Hartnett pins the timing of a "big top" to the second quarter, at which point he says he will turn "rationally bearish." As for the triggers, one that already gives Hartnett cause for concern is that the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> is soaring to all-time highs even though new capital goods orders, a forward-looking gauge of business sentiment, remains flat. A more distant catalyst is a reversal of the Fed stimulus that has helped markets stay afloat. Hartnett envisions a scenario where investors' optimism about the election fuels animal spirits and prompts the Fed to scale back its liquidity support. An additional trigger Hartnett envisions is that investors completely underprice the biggest risks they have placed on the back burner for now, namely an economic <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/next-recession-rosenberg-sees-odds-at-80-percent-damage-done-2020-1">recession</a>, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/ken-griffin-billionaire-calls-markets-unprepared-inflation-increase-citadel-effect-2020-2-1028884739">inflation</a>, and credit defaults. Until these scenarios play out, Hartnett is staying "irrationally bullish" on risk assets during the first quarter. Party Wise Candidates With Criminal Cases In The First Phase Elections

The viral video starring <keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> is the third in line for the <keyword id="2785822" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vogue-Empower">Vogue Empower</keyword> campaign by <keyword id="214428" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vogue-India">Vogue India</keyword>. The first two videos for the campaign had a sense of connection attached with them, which was why we were really looking forward to the third instalment. 
 
‘Going Home’ starring Alia Bhatt and directed by Vikas Bahl got us thinking about a perfect society where a woman is not afraid of asking for a lift from a group of strangers in the late hours of the night. 
 
Similarly, ‘Start With The Boys’ starring Madhuri Dixit and directed by Vinil Mathew touched the right chords when it asked the parents to raise boys who don’t make women cry, instead of raising boys who don’t cry. 
 The third video by <keyword id="27704" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Homi-Adajania">Homi Adajania</keyword> however, talks about the same old topic of liberating women from the cages that our society has created for them. The idea behind the video was to show 99 women in from different walks of life in a 2-minute video. As far as that is concerned, the video looks okay, like many others that have been made on or around the same topic, but if you listen too closely, the video wouldn’t make much sense to a common Indian woman. 
 The video starts with a sans-makeup Deepika and her frizzy hair, talking about the spirit that can’t be bound in clothes, and the many faces of privileged women dancing contemporary. We also see some known faces, like Adhuna Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, Scherezade Shroff and <keyword id="6366186" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nimrat-Kaur">Nimrat Kaur</keyword>. 
 
The makers have talked about women voicing their choice for equality, be it social, political, economic, sexual, and it sounds acceptable if we don’t go in the details, which unfortunately we have to because of Deepika’s constant voice-over in the background without which the video is nothing but a collection of some 90 portraits. 
 
Talking of the details, she demands the equality of having sex without marriage, outside of marriage or not having sex at all. 
“Just because you are a woman doesn't mean you can make choices that please you without caring a zilch about people around you. We have never taken responsibilities to protect and provide off men's shoulders so this whole freedom of choice to women just because they are women is nothing but asking freedom to do things that have always been labelled "wrong" when done by men. The effort seems to compete with men at any cost possible. Men and women are differently equal and never completely equal. Choices come with responsibilities. Hope young women realize that. Sex outside marriage isn't a choice but a mockery of relationship you "chose" to get into,” says Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, a young journalist and independent movie maker associated with the issue of fake charges under Section 498A, and we couldn’t agree more. 
 
While we appreciate the sentiments behind women independence, we believe that the video could have actually featured women from all walks of life, and focusing on real problems rather than the controversial demand that we discussed above. To add the portraits of 3-4 tribal women to hint their involvement (and approval) in the demands put forward in the video is misleading to say the least. 
 
Deepika has been winning hearts recently, with her powerful performances on screen and acceptance of suffering from depression in real life. In this video too, she has looked and spoken good, which was all she could have done on her part. Whatever lacks in the video demands a better attempt from the makers the next time, if not an explanation of sort for points like the ones we discussed above.
