A guide to 403 errors, and how to troubleshoot the 'forbidden' webpage

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A website on 800,000 Maryland license plates redirects to the 'Philippines' Best Betting Site.'</li><li>The plates commemorated the War of 1812, but a non-profit lost control of the URL on the plate.</li></ul><p>Nearly 800,000 vehicles in Maryland are unintentionally displaying an ad for online casinos and virtual cockfighting in the Philippines, thanks to a URL that appears on their license plates.</p><p>The plates, meant to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812, feature an illustration of Fort McHenry and the web address <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://www.starspangled200.org">www.starspangled200.org</a> along the bottom. However, the URL now redirects to a Philippines-based gambling website called Globe International.</p><p>There are 798,000 active War of 1812 license plates in the state, the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration told Insider. The commemorative plates were the default for all license plates issued in Maryland between 2010 to 2016.</p><p>"The website printed on the plates is not owned by the Motor Vehicle Administration," John Lazarou, spokesperson for Maryland's Motor Vehicle, said in an emailed statement. The plates were meant to raise funds for bicentennial projects and events through the nonprofit Star Spangled 200, Inc. However, the group no longer controls the website. <br /><br />Lazarou said that the agency's IT department is looking into potential solutions. One option could be that the state purchases the domain name, but it's not clear how much that would cost.</p><p>Internet archives show the website contained information about the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20220615000000*/www.starspangled200.org">Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail as recently as August 2022</a> before switching to promote the online casino at some point in December. Domain registration information shows that the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://who.is/whois/starspangled200.org">ownership of the site was updated in mid-November.</a></p><p>The current site recommends various gambling sites in the Philippines, as well as walking readers through how to wager on "Sabong: The Filipino Cockfighting Style You Haven't Tried."</p><p>The current owner of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="http://www.starspangled200.org">www.starspangled200.org</a> could not be reached — its Contact Us page currently returns a 403 error, blocking all traffic from the United States.</p><p>Reddit user Samuel Zehr first noticed that the URL led to a gambling website after typing it into his phone on Memorial Day. "The gambling website was not at all what I was expecting," Zehr told The Washington Post.</p><p>Zehr <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/maryland/comments/13vcr5p/maryland_war_of_1812_license_plates/">posted about the discovery on Reddit</a>, bringing the issue to the public's attention. "I do feel really bad for the state employees who have to deal with this," he told the Post.</p><p>The MVA "does not endorse the views or content on the current website using that URL," Lazarou said.</p><p>In the meantime, Maryland must determine how to fix license plates that have become ads for "Philippines' Best Betting Site" — and fast, before more potential customers hit the road.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong style="color: #222222;">OpenAI's ChatGPT failed math and science tests that sixth-graders in Singapore take.</strong></li><li><strong style="color: #222222;">It made errors in simple addition and could not comprehend any diagrams, per The Straits Times.</strong></li></ul><p>When the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">viral, AI-powered ChatGPT bot</a> was asked to solve questions from Singapore's sixth-grade examinations, it failed miserably.</p><p>During an experiment in February, ChatGPT was asked by the Singaporean news outlet <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/chatgpt-fails-psle-maths-and-science-scrapes-through-english" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Straits Times</a> to answer questions from the <a href="https://www.seab.gov.sg/home/examinations/psle/about-psle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Primary School Leaving Exam</a>. The PSLE is an exam that all 12-year-olds in Singapore must take, and determines which secondary school they go to.</p><p>ChatGPT was given questions from the PSLE's 2020, 2021, and 2022 papers on mathematics, science, and English. </p><p>It scored an average of 16 out of 100 marks for the three mathematics papers it took, per The Straits Times. During the test, it could not understand or answer any questions that referenced diagrams or graphs, and was given zero marks for these questions. </p><p>But ChatGPT also made mistakes with simple, text-based questions. When asked for the sum of 60,000, 5,000, 400, and 3, it said the answer was 65,503, The Straits Times reported.</p><p>The correct answer is 65,403.</p><p>However, when Insider tried the same question, ChatGPT's answer was correct.</p><p>ChatGPT fared a little better at the science papers, getting an average of 21 out of 100 marks.</p><p>But on Monday, when Insider tested ChatGPT on two PSLE science questions — one from 2020 and another from 2022 — it got both questions right. </p><p>ChatGPT managed to pass the English tests and scored an average of 11 out of 20 marks across the three papers it took, The Straits Times reported. During the English test, ChatGPT still ran into problems — this time, with questions containing words that have multiple meanings.</p><p>One example The Straits Times cited was the word "value." ChatGPT disregarded the question's context, where "value" referred to one's moral principles, and answered as if it meant monetary value.</p><p>ChatGPT was developed by the artificial intelligence company OpenAI and launched in November. It had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-may-be-fastest-growing-app-in-history-ubs-study-2023-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">100 million users</a> by the end of January.</p><p>The bot's inability to pass Singapore's sixth-grade exams is surprising — it managed to pass <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/list-here-are-the-exams-chatgpt-has-passed-so-far-2023-1#wharton-mba-exam-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a final exam</a> at the Wharton business school, passed <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/26/tech/chatgpt-passes-exams/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">tests in four law school courses,</a> and comfortably cleared a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/researchers-tested-chatgpt-same-test-questions-aspiring-doctors-2023-1">US medical licensing exam.</a></p><p>Universities are now revamping examinations over concerns that AI bots could be used for cheating, The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/16/technology/chatgpt-artificial-intelligence-universities.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times reported in January.</a> This pivot in testing involves more oral exams, group work, and handwritten assessments instead of typed submissions, per The Times.</p><p>Representatives at OpenAI and the Ministry of Education in Singapore did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

The record-breaking heat in the UK has led to cooling-related outages at the <keyword id="691847" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-Cloud" source="Orion">Google Cloud</keyword> and <keyword id="43340" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="oracle" source="Orion">Oracle</keyword> servers, leaving the customers flummoxed as they never experience such outages.<br /><br /><keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> Cloud said in an update that there was a cooling-related failure in one of its buildings in the UK-based data centres, which has now been resolved.<br /><br />"This caused a partial failure of capacity in that zone, leading to VM (virtual machine) terminations and a loss of machines for a small set of our customers," Google said late on Tuesday.<br /><br />"Customers can launch virtual machines (VMs) in all zones of europe-west2. A small number of HDD backed Persistent Disk volumes are still experiencing impact and will exhibit IO errors," the company said on Tuesday.<br /><br />Oracle has a similar message for customers, citing "unseasonal temperatures" in the UK as the cause of the outage.<br /><br />"We have confirmed data centre cooling infrastructure has been restored and temperatures have returned to normal operating levels. All services and customer resources have been restored," said Oracle.<br /><br />"However, a subset of <keyword id="14504951" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oracle-integration-cloud" source="Orion">Oracle Integration Cloud</keyword> resources continue to experience impact. Google Cloud and Oracle data centers shut down by the UK heatwave

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A <keyword id="99644" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mississippi">Mississippi</keyword> state audit report found nearly $118 million in improper <keyword id="156351" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="unemployment-insurance">unemployment insurance</keyword> payments.</li><li>The payments occured due to stolen identities, <keyword id="38935" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fraud">fraud</keyword> schemes, and were sent to people in jail.</li><li>Axios reported that as much as 50% of stimulus money may have been stolen, largely due to fraud.</li></ul><p>Americans received $600 weekly <keyword id="414451" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="unemployment-benefits">unemployment benefits</keyword> under the <keyword id="9073299" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cares-act">CARES Act</keyword> in March, but the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) found in May that a portion of those funds fell into the wrong hands due to failures in detecting fraud. Mississippi just affirmed those findings on a statewide level - with a number attached. </p><p>Mississippi State Auditor Shad White released a <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1eAjwuOXLR1_8ifQst1SeU6ANIYRnA7EQ/view">report</a> on Tuesday that found the state had distributed $117,948,403 in improper <keyword id="6358907" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword> insurance claims, or 5.5% of the claims distributed during fiscal year 2020. The report outlined the following characteristics of the incorrect payments:</p><ul><li>Payments made to individuals who never had a reduction in wages;</li><li>Fraudulent payments due to stolen identity;</li><li>Payments made to people in jail;</li><li>And payments made due to international unemployment fraud.</li></ul><p>White said in a statement that the report shows "it's more important than ever to understand the mistakes that were made when money was flowing so freely during COVID."</p><p>"Nearly every state I've talked to around the country lost millions of dollars to fraud out of their unemployment funds. Mississippi was no exception," White added. "The federal government and state governments around the country do not need to repeat those mistakes the next time we have a recession."</p><p>White is correct - a portion of stimulus funds, including unemployment benefits, have not reached the right people due to issues with fraud and technology errors. For example, the OIG found that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unemployment-insurance-benefits-cares-act-office-inspector-general-labor-2021-6">$39.2 billion</a> in CARES Act funds were likely wasted, citing inefficient state governments that failed to detect fraud. </p><p>And Axios reported earlier this month that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/half-stimulus-unemployment-benefits-money-stolen-fraud-payments-axios-2021-6">as much as 50%</a> of stimulus money may have been stolen, with Blake Hall, the CEO of ID.me, a fraud-prevention service, telling the news service that America has lost $400 billion to fraudulent claims.</p><p><a href="https://www.king5.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/unemployment-fraud-claims-spike-washington-employment-security-department/281-6cbbbbe5-3307-4202-a5b1-f974cf704eb5#:~:text=The%20Washington%20Employment%20Security%20Department,the%20second%20week%20of%20May.&amp;text=A%20state%20audit%20released%20in,misappropriated%2C%20%24369%20million%20was%20recovered.red." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington</a>, <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/money/business/2021/05/25/fake-unemployment-claims-iowa-total-up-30-million-dollars-workforce-development-beth-townsend/5242321001/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Iowa</a>, <a href="https://oui.doleta.gov/press/2020/032620.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> and <a href="https://www.axios.com/pandemic-unemployment-assistance-claims-f61938d7-5fb1-4c80-99d5-a21b5ee7b9be.html" target="_self">New York</a> have also lost millions of stimulus dollars to fraud, Axios reported.</p><p>While the data on improper payments comes from March's CARES Act, President Joe Biden's stimulus law also included $300 weekly payments through September - although GOP-led states have been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/republican-states-cutting-unemployment-benefits-expanded-300-weekly-biden-stimulus-2021-5">ending</a> those unemployment benefits early.</p><p>Given that some Democrats are pushing for additional recurring stimulus payments and unemployment benefits, fraud will need to be addressed moving forward, according to the OIG. The office recommended more modernized technology to better detect fraudulent payments, along with working with states to help process claims.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Al Bello/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">The NFL catch rule is an utter mystery, even to fans that claim to understand it.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><span>The NFL catch rule has made for some of the most controversial play calls of all time. </span></li><li><span>38% of respondents claimed to understand the NFL catch rule</span></li><li><span>When probed further, o</span><span>nly 1 out of every 18 people who think they know what a catch is, know the rule. </span></li></ul><p>NFL fans are notoriously critical of what happens on the field.</p><p>Whether it's Monday-morning quarterbacking, debating the merits of a fourth-down decision, or arguing with the referees about a call from the comfort of their barstool, football fans in many cases believe they know the game just as well as those that get paid to play, coach, and officiate it for a living.</p><p>One place where this is especially glaring is concerning the ever-changing catch rule. To many, "What is a catch?" has become something of a philosophical quandary in recent years as opposed to a discernible on-field play that can be determined when viewed in slow-motion replay.</p><p>As it turns out, most football fans, even those who claim to know what constitutes an NFL catch in 2019, don't understand the catch rule as it stands today.</p><p><span>INSIDER ran a SurveyMonkey Audience poll that ran January 10-11, 2019 where we asked respondents about their knowledge of the NFL rules regarding overtime and the definition of a catch. We asked 1,078 people how well they understood NFL rules. Right off the bat, 35% said they didn't watch the NFL, and roughly 18% said they didn't understand the catch or overtime rules. All told, an impressive 403 (38.4%) claimed to understand the NFL catch rule.</span></p><p><span>We called that bluff and then asked those people to identify <a href="https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-video-rulebook/completing-a-catch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the three things currently required</a> for something to be considered a catch. Those are: </span><span></span></p><ol><li><span>A player secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground.</span></li><li><span>A player touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body, other than his hands</span></li><li><span>A player maintains control of the ball long enough to perform an act like tucking the ball away, taking an additional step, extending it forward, or avoiding an opponent.</span></li></ol><p><span>Unsurprisingly, fans are much more confident in their knowledge of the NFL rulebook than they should be.</span></p><p><span>Of the 403 claiming to understand the catch rule, just 48 respondents correctly identified the three aspects of the rule as it is currently written. Further, of those 48 respondents, merely 22 identified <em>only </em>the correct three answers, and not one or several other erroneous ones. </span></p><p><span>This leads us to believe that while about 62% of NFL fans claim to understand the catch rule, realistically only about 3.5% do. More to the point, only 1 out of every 18 people who will try to explain whether a play is indeed a catch will know the by-the-book definition of what they're talking about. </span></p><p><span>This may be the result of a rapidly evolving NFL rulebook, and conflict with the increasingly popular college game. Football fans love to think that they know what constitutes a 'catch' in the NFL - almost all of them are wrong

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>If you've spent any time browsing the web, chances are pretty good you've run into a page with an error code on it.&#xa0;<p>You've likely seen numbers 404 ("not found") or 403 ("forbidden").&#xa0;</p><p>Less commonly spotted is <a href="https://httpstatuses.com/418">error code 418</a>, which makes your browser proclaim&#xa0;"I'm a teapot."</p><p>If it sounds like a joke, it is: Way back on April Fool's Day in 1998, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) - a group that sets internet standards&#xa0;- proposed "<a href="https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2324.txt">a protocol for controlling, monitoring, and diagnosing coffee pots</a>."&#xa0;That document&#xa0;<a href="https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2324.txt">defined status 418 thusly</a>:&#xa0;"Any attempt to brew coffee with a teapot should result in the error code '418 I'm a teapot.' The resulting entity body MAY be short and stout."</p><p>The error code has since become a running gag.</p><p>Go to <a href="https://www.google.com/teapot">Google.com/teapot</a>, and see for yourself. Programming languages like Node.js and Google's Go both include the 418 error as a little Easter egg, as does Microsoft's ASP.NET framework. Someone even <a href="http://error418.net/">rigged a teapot to act as a web server</a>, just so it can proudly display error 418 when you visit it.</p><p>On Thursday, however, the future of code 418 was briefly called into doubt. In a GitHub thread, Mark Nottingham, the chairman of the IETF working group that oversees hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP),&#xa0;argued that the 418<span>&#xa0;error was never a part of&#xa0;the standard, which governs&#xa0;</span>how web browsers communicate with web servers. &#xa0;</p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>People should stop treating 418 as a core part of the HTTP standard, and free up the error number for more serious concerns, he&#xa0;said in his post.</span></p><p>"<span>I know it's amusing, I know that a few people have knocked up implementations for fun, but it shouldn't pollute the core protocol," Nottingham wrote.</span></p><p><span>This prompted a swift, but fiery, debate of the future of the web's teapot error code. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending.</span></p><h2><span></span><span>The pushback</span></h2><p><span></span><span></span><span></span><span>The biggest champion of the teapot status was&#xa0;15-year-old programmer Shane Brunswick. Brunswick, who will be a sophomore in high school this fall, started a "Save 418" movement, giving it the&#xa0;#Save418 hashtag.</span></p><p><span></span>The teapot error is something "that puts a smile on your face,"&#xa0;Brunswick told Business Insider. It's a&#xa0;silly little thing from the early internet that's worth preserving, he said.&#xa0;</p><p>"<span>It's a reminder that the underlying processes of computers are still made by humans," Brunswick said. "It'd be a real shame to see 418 go."&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Others pointed out that the teapot status has been treated as a part of HTTP for so long that removing it could actually cause technical problems for many sites. That scored technical points for Brunswick's side.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Nottingham wasn't expecting such a big response, he told Business Insider. He just wanted to clarify 418's status - or lack thereof. And he took Brunswick's opposition in stride.</span></p><p><span>"I'm a bad, bad man," Nottingham quipped on Twitter, with a link to Brunswick's website.</span></p><p><span>While some have tried to chastise Brunswick for being disrespectful, Nottingham said that&#xa0;above all, he really appreciated that a teenager was taking such an interest in a standard that's almost three decades old.</span></p><p><span>"I'm really happy that the next generation of developers still care about HTTP so deeply," Nottingham said.</span></p><h2><span>Happy ending</span></h2><p><span>Ultimately, after a day of debate, Nottingham and Brunswick came to an accord that seems to have made everybody happy. On Friday afternoon, Nottingham filed a proposal to adopt 418 as an official HTTP code. If and when it's approved, "I'm a teapot" will officially become a core part of the web.</span></p><p><span>In response, Brunswick updated his website: "Thanks for everything Mark Nottingham, you put up a good fight! =)"</span></p><p><span>The issue is now closed, with programmers cheering that their teapots are safe. The notorious torrent search engine was - after years of failed attempts - <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/r-pirate-bay-taken-down-after-swedish-police-raid-2014-12">shuttered by authorities in a raid late last year for helping facilitate copyright infringement</a>.</p><p>The Pirate Bay refused to stay dead, and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-pirate-bay-could-be-about-to-return-after-a-waving-pirate-flag-appeared-online-2014-12">after weeks of teasing </a>a return <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2015/02/01/the-pirate-bay-returns/">the site reemerged at the end of January 2015</a>. But there were other problems too. At one point <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-pirate-bay-staff-split-2015-1">a rift between staff members threatened to split the website in two</a>, although <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/the-pirate-bay-moderators-return-2015-2">they've since reconciled</a>.</p><p>Now, <a href="http://torrentfreak.com/pirate-bay-suffering-downtime-150224/">according to a Torrent Freak report</a>, The Pirate Bay is running into a new problem: It's struggling to keep the site online. Visitors to The Pirate Bay are currently greeted with a "403 Forbidden" error (though search is still accessible if you navigate directly to it). And earlier today, it was redirected to "The Mobile Bay" another site owned by the administrators. We rounded up some of this biggest errors people make when it comes to investing, according to the experts, so that you don't have to learn the hard way.</p><p>Even the most intelligent investors are guilty of these mistakes.</p><h3><strong>1. Making decisions with your emotions</strong></h3><p><span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millionaires-investment-strategy-low-cost-stock-index-funds-building-wealth-2018-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Investing can get emotional</a> - money can cloud choices with "fear, greed, and nervousness," tempting investors to move their investments around, certified financial planner Shelly-Ann Eweka </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investing-mistakes-smart-people-make-2015-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously wrote</a><span> for Business Insider. </span></p><p><span>One of the best things you can do for your investments, she wrote, is leave them alone and focus on a long-term investment plan. </span></p><p><span>"</span>Avoid impulsively selling an underperforming investment and stay the course with a diversified portfolio that is able to withstand inevitable short-term rises and dips in the market," <span>Eweka</span> wrote.</p><h3><strong>2. Dipping into the market sporadically</strong></h3><p>Lumpy investing is when an investor invests inconsistently - and doing so can be a mistake, according to Chris Hyzy, chief investment officer at Bank of America Global Wealth and Investment Management.</p><p><span>"You get a small bonus check or something like that in the early part of the year, you immediately put it to work, and you stop," Hyzy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-and-most-common-investing-mistakes-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously told Business Insider</a>. Using cash</strong></h3><p><span>Millennials in particular are guilty of this investing mistake. Business Insider's Akin Oyedele <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-cash-investing-long-term-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously reported</a> that millennials prefer to use cash investments to set aside money they don't plan to touch for at least a decade, according to a <a href="https://www.bankrate.com/investing/financial-security-july-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bankrate.com report</a>. </span></p><p><span>However, this is one of the worst ways to earn returns.</span></p><p><span>"For investment horizons of longer than 10 years, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/when-to-invest-in-stocks-2018-7">the stock market is an entirely appropriate investment</a>," Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate.com, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/millennials-cash-investing-long-term-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously told Business Insider</a>. "Cash is not, and especially if you're not seeking out the most competitive returns."</span></p><h3><strong>4. Waiting for the "all-clear sign" to time the market</strong></h3><p><span>Hyzy describes the "all-clear sign" as the moment you're finally comfortable financially - but there's an inherent problem in that thinking. </span></p><p>"You're technically never at your highest level of comfort and usually, when you are, it's when things are overvalued," he said.</p><p>Hyzy said that even a well-intentioned efforts to enter the market at a "good" time can not work out, despite having expert insight and training, if your timing doesn't align with the market's timing. "So, don't time the market," he said.</p><p>Timing the market is also known as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/investing-mistakes-to-avoid-2016-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">selling high and buying low</a>.</p><p>"<span>It has been shown time and again that trying to outsmart the collective wisdom of the millions of smart, well-informed people who trade in the market is very hard to do consistently, no matter who you are," Derek C. Hamilton, certified financial planner at Elser Financial Planning in Indianapolis, <a href="https://money.usnews.com/investing/slideshows/avoid-these-8-rookie-investing-mistakes?onepage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told US News &amp; World report</a>. "Disciplined rebalancing keeps you away from that market-timing trap."</span></p><p><span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financial-planner-investing-is-not-about-timing-the-market-2018-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Financial advisor Eric Roberge</a> said it's not about timing the market, it's about time <em>in</em> the market - the longer your money is in the market, the more long-term growth it will have.</span></p><h3><strong>6. Disembarking from your long-term plan</strong></h3><p>Letting daily trends influence your portfolio moves can end up putting your returns in a worse place. According to Eweka, many studies found that investors who hold <span>a Standard &amp; Poor's 500 Index Fund have better returns than those who buy and sell stocks themselves.</span></p><p><span>"It is important to develop a long-term investment plan and stay the course in order to reach your financial goals," she wrote. "This plan should be designed to provide a clear roadmap for achieving a range of needs and goals, from paying monthly rent or mortgage and saving for college, to investing for retirement, during both up and down markets."</span></p><h3><strong>7.
