<ul class="summary-list"><li>Earlier this year I left my job of seven years to go full time freelance. </li><li>With my regular wages gone, I had to ask my parents for financial help. </li></ul>If anyone asks how I would describe myself, "independent" would be at the top of the list. I've always been <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-friends-are-over-remote-jobs-gen-z-relationships-pandemic-2024-6">focused and hardworking</a>, having been employed since I was 15 years old.How I earn my money has changed over the years, from working in retail, selling prom dresses and skinny jeans, to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leave-lonely-career-success-dream-job-start-business-2024-2">writing for a living</a>.Yet, at 31 years old, I'm more broke than I've ever been.<h2 id="63562b7e-ace3-4dfb-82a0-a1c5bfbd34c4">I left my job to go freelance</h2>In March, I left my job of seven years to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/self-employed-freelancer-engineer-career-change-pros-cons-2024-4">go freelance</a>. It was something I'd been working toward since 2021 when I went part-time — after securing a mortgage and my first apartment — so I could properly dip my toe in self-employed waters. In the two days a week I wasn't working at a glossy publishing house, I built up contacts, wrote for different titles, covered new areas, and experienced the joy of controlling my own time.But being my own boss for two days a week is a lot different from five, something I didn't properly appreciate until my last pay cheque ran out. Until then, I'd been able to focus on writing what I wanted to, often poorly paid but good for my portfolio, with the safety of a good monthly salary. But when my regular wages were gone, writing op-eds about race and identity or hot takes on Hollywood's latest releases wasn't cutting it, and I hadn't yet established consistent income streams. I did something I'd never done before — asked <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/parents-help-financially-call-it-loan-against-inheritance-2024-7">my parents for money</a> to help pay my mortgage.<h2 id="e8912f7f-a2ae-4d80-a2d8-c9ea06a95dc8">My parents are helping me for 6 months</h2>I hoped to only ask once, but the next month was tight, too. Now, my parents have committed to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/paying-mortgage-biweekly">paying my mortgage</a> for six months without me asking. They've witnessed how unhappy I was in my 10 years of corporate employment and how my mental health suffered. They've seen me bullied by a former manager and face racial and gender-based micro and macro aggressions. They've seen me apply for endless jobs, mostly to be beaten to the role by someone already covering the vacant position.They say they're glad to be able to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/child-free-life-only-child-guilt-2023-6">support me</a>, knowing that I'll work hard to be self-sufficient again and that I don't take this gift for granted.The money is a relief in a world where titles are closing every day, budgets are being slashed, and the pay per piece of work hasn't increased in almost a decade. But my parents' help means more than that — it's a vote of confidence at a time when I'm scared to jump into this new way of working. It's a message that they're here for me, despite living three hours away, and an encouragement to make my goals happen.<h2 id="5050dd56-44b0-458d-b7c2-75ac31aa8d4c">They don't expect me to pay them back</h2>It's also special for its singularity, my parents not expecting to be able to help me in this way. While I lived a comfortable childhood and never wanted for anything, we weren't particularly well off. Sometimes, the stars align — my move to freelancing coincided with them receiving a small lump sum, hence their ability to pay my mortgage.My parents haven't been able to sustain me in such a significant way before, and their insistence that they don't begrudge giving me this money, nor expect me to pay it back, despite my offers, makes it easier not to feel embarrassed or like a failure. After all, it's a tough time to be a journalist. I know that I've done as much as I can to lay the foundations for a sustainable career in a struggling industry in a country deep in a cost-of-living crisis.I know that this support isn't an ongoing offer nor something I want to rely on. I've got six months to earn enough to build up some savings and start paying into a private pension, hopefully no longer anxious about every penny I spend or in my overdraft after a direct debit I forgot about.I want to stand on my own two feet, but I can't feel too guilty when the world's not the same as it was for my parents' generation. Until then, I'm taking the money.

I'm 31 and my parents pay my mortgage — their help is a lifeline

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Inflation, as measured by the consumer price index, ticked up again in March.</li><li>The CPI rose 3.5% from March 2023 to this past March after rising 3.2% year over year in February.</li></ul>US <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/what-is-inflation">inflation</a> is hot again.A Wednesday <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/cpi/">news release</a> from the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the consumer price index increased 3.5% for the 12 months ending in March. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.investing.com/economic-calendar/cpi-733">forecast</a> for March's year-over-year increase in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/cpi/">CPI </a>was 3.4%, a higher rate than the 3.2% increase or the 3.1% increase in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-cpi-consumer-price-index-food-gas-housing-prices-february-2024-3">February</a> or January, respectively.The rate came in above the forecast and was higher than February's year-over-year change.The recent acceleration in the year-over-year percent change isn't just painful on its own for Americans. It also means they likely won't see <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/did-fed-cut-interest-rates-march-meeting-continues-pause-inflation-2024-3">interest rate</a> cuts soon.The Federal Open Market Committee will be meeting April 30 and May 1, where a rate cut announcement is very unlikely. Based on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">CME FedWatch tool</a>, markets expect there's around a 98% that rates will hold.And some market watchers also think the Fed may hold off on its widely-anticipated cuts at its next meeting in June."While the Fed officially targets the PCE measure of inflation, which is not showing the same degree of stickiness as the CPI data, the weight of evidence from this report (and other high-frequency data) likely now tips the scale away from a June cut," Richard de Chazal, macro analyst for William Blair, said in a note.CPI increased 0.4% in March from the preceding month — the same as the 0.4% surge in February. That's also comparable to the forecast of 0.3%.Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 3.8% year over year in March. That's above the forecast of 3.7% and the same as February's 3.8%.Core CPI also rose by 0.4% again. The expected increase was 0.3%."The index for shelter rose in March, as did the index for gasoline," the news release from the BLS published on Wednesday said. "Combined, these two indexes contributed over half of the monthly increase in the index for all items."The shelter index rose 0.4% again from the preceding month. This index saw a 5.7% rise year over year in March, matching the 5.7% year-over-year increase in February.Rent of primary residence increased 5.7% year over year, and owners' equivalent rent of primary residence rose 5.9% year over year. Shelter contributed to the bulk of the overall increase in prices over the year.Energy saw a smaller month-over-month increase in March, with a 1.1% increase from February to March compared with the 2.3% increase in February. Energy didn't see another year-over-year decline. It actually rose 2.1% after February's year-over-year decline of 1.9%.The gas index rose 1.7% month over month after a 3.8% increase. This index climbed 1.3% for the 12 months ending March after a drop of 3.9% for the 12 months ending February.Food saw a 0.1% increase month over month, and this index saw a 2.2% increase year over year. The index for food away from home is high compared with food at home. Food away from home had a year-over-year increase of 4.2% compared with food at home's 1.2% rise.Julia Pollak, the chief economist at ZipRecruiter, told Business Insider the jobs report released on Friday was "the Fed's holy grail: strong job market with non-inflationary growth."The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-wages-growth-in-march-unemployment-rate-labor-market-2024-4">US added 303,000 jobs in March</a>, a robust gain after the strong 270,000 gain in February. Pollak said the increases in both job growth and the workweek, along with the drop in the unemployment rate, were "all good signs about the enduring strength of the labor market and its dynamism." She also noted the slower wage growth, which she said was "good news for a Fed that's still battling inflation."Average hourly earnings increased 4.1% year over year to $34.69 an hour in March, which fell short of the 4.3% year-over-year increase in February.

Inflation came in hotter than expected in March

Telecom operator <keyword id="19951944" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Bharti Airtel" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Bharti Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> on Tuesday posted a 31 per cent drop in consolidated profit to Rs 2,072 crore in the March quarter. The company had registered a profit of Rs 3,005.6 crore in the year-ago period. The consolidated revenue of operations increased 4.4 per cent to Rs 37,599.1 crore during the quarter under review from Rs 36,009 crore a year earlier. "Consolidated performance was impacted primarily by the devaluation of the Nigerian Naira. We added 7.8 million smartphone customers and delivered an industry leading <keyword id="20233536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ARPU" source="keywords">ARPU</keyword> of Rs 209," Bharti <keyword id="19896909" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airtel" source="keywords">Airtel</keyword> Managing Director Gopal Vittal said. For the year ended March 31, 2024, Bharti Airtel's profit dropped 10.5 per cent to Rs 7,467 crore from Rs 8,346 crore in FY23. The annual revenue from operations of the company increased 7.7 per cent to Rs 1,49,982.4 crore during the reported fiscal from Rs 1,39,144.8 crore in 2022-23. For FY24, the Airtel board has recommended a final dividend of Rs 8 per fully paid-up equity share of face value of Rs 5 each and Rs 2 per partly paid-up equity share of face value of Rs 5 each. Bharti Airtel net profit tanks 31% to ₹2,072 cr in Q4

Also, Aadhaar-enabled e-KYC rose by 16 per cent as 21.47 million Aadhaars were updated successfully in March 2023. While a majority of the authentications transaction numbers were carried out by using biometric fingerprint, it is followed by demographic and OTP authentications, official sources said. Adoption of e-KYC has also significantly reduced customer acquisition cost of entities like financial institutions, telecom service providers and others, they added. The cumulative number of <keyword id="4342439" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aadhaar-e-kyc" source="Orion">Aadhaar e-KYC</keyword> transactions so far has gone past 14.7 billion till the end of March 2023. During the month of March, more than 21.47 million Aadhaars were updated following requests from the residents as against 16.8 million such updates in February 2023. Aadhaar authentication rose to 2.31 billion in March 2023: IT Ministry data

Per the news release, January's job growth was revised from 229,000 to 256,000. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-unemployment-work-labor-market-wage-growth-in-february-2024-3">February's job growth</a> was revised from 275,000 to 270,000.Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, told Business Insider the latest jobs report is "the Fed's holy grail: strong job market with non-inflationary growth."The leisure and hospitality industry saw employment increase by 49,000 to 16.9 million. Friday's news release said that the industry "has returned to its pre-pandemic February 2020 level.""Over the prior 12 months, job growth in the industry had averaged 37,000 per month," the release said.Nick Bunker, the economic research director for North America at the Indeed Hiring Lab, told Business Insider the industry "was a big engine of growth for so many years because it was still trying to recover.""It's unclear if that will be the case moving forward, but there is still strong demand for lots of services related to this industry," Bunker said.That can be seen with spending, as Bunker said "people are still eager to spend money on services."Pollak said that leisure and hospitality "was so hugely, heavily disrupted by the pandemic" that despite the return to the pre-pandemic employment peak, "we are nowhere near the pre-pandemic trend.""That's why I think we can expect to see faster than normal growth for many more months as this industry basically continues to recover and return to trend," Pollak said.Construction also saw strong employment growth, with a one-month increase of 39,000. Healthcare saw employment growth of around 72,000.The US unemployment rate decreased from 3.9% to 3.8%. The unemployment rate was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.investing.com/economic-calendar/unemployment-rate-300">forecasted</a> to hold steady at a rate of 3.9%.After three consecutive months at 62.5%, the labor force participation rate increased from 62.5% to 62.7%. The employment-population ratio increased from 60.1% in February to 60.3% in March.Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% in March from $34.57 an hour in February. Average hourly earnings rose 4.1% year over year in March, from $33.31 an hour to $34.69 an hour. That rise is less than the previous 4.3% rise."People are in the labor market looking for jobs, finding jobs, and wages are up — over the year, it's 4.1%. So that exceeds inflation. That means real money in the pockets of working families. It's exactly what we'd want to see," Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su told BI.The Federal Reserve has been closely watching wage growth, and a continued decline could lead the central bank to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-interest-rate-cut-outlook-powell-inflation-data-us-economy-2024-3">cut rates later this year</a> as is widely expected."Wage growth is ticking down," Bunker said. "We do see some measures that have tightness that are related to the labor market, like the quits rate has ticked down. There's a way for the labor market to continue to grow and be strong and not add fuel to the inflationary fire. And I think we're seeing many signs of that in this report."Additionally, data released earlier this week shows the number of people who quit rose by 38,000 in February from January's level. There were around 3.5 million quits in February. Openings for roles in February were elevated from the levels seen before the pandemic, but there were only 8,000 more openings in February than January."On the last business day of February, the number of job openings changed little at 8.8 million; this measure is down from a series high of 12.2 million in March 2022," Tuesday's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/jolts.nr0.htm">news release</a> from the Bureau of Labor Statistics about the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey estimates said.Tuesday's report also showed there were little changes from month to month, such as with job openings and total separations."It would be nice to live in a world where we have low unemployment and there's steady, consistent gains in wage growth and more people coming into the labor market," Bunker said. "So hopefully, fingers crossed, dramatic days are behind us and we can see some strong gains for workers, for job seekers. But, not in the way that feels discombobulated."

TVS Motor Company on Wednesday said its net profit increased 15 per cent to Rs 387 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2024, riding on robust sales. The company had reported a net profit of Rs 336 crore in the January-March period of the previous fiscal. Revenue from operations rose to Rs 10,042 crore in the period under review compared with Rs 8,031 crore in the fourth quarter of FY23. In the fourth quarter, the company said its overall <keyword id="19948209" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="two-wheeler" source="keywords">two-wheeler</keyword> and three-wheeler sales, including exports, grew by 22 per cent to 10.63 lakh units compared to 8.68 lakh units in the same period of the 2022-23 fiscal. TVS Motor shares climb over 6% after March quarter earnings

Private sector lender <keyword id="19952948" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Axis-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Axis Bank" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Axis Bank">Axis Bank</keyword> on Wednesday reported a net profit of Rs 7,129 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2024. The bank had reported a net loss of Rs 5,728 crore in the March quarter of 2022-23 fiscal. Total income rose to Rs 35,990 crore in the March quarter of 2023-24 fiscal, from Rs 28,758 crore in the year-ago period. The bank's Net Interest Income (NII) grew 11 per cent Year-on-Year (YoY) to Rs 13,089 crore. For 2023-24 fiscal, the net profit jumped 160 per cent to Rs 24,861 crore. The numbers for the March quarter of 2022-23 fiscal and the full fiscal include the impact of exceptional items relating to the <keyword id="19941660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="citibank" source="keywords">Citibank</keyword> business acquisition, Axis Bank said. Its balance sheet grew 12 per cent YoY to Rs 14,77,209 crore as on March 31, 2024. The bank issued 1.24 million new credit cards in the March quarter of FY24 and has been one of the highest credit card issuers in the country over the last nine quarters, Axis Bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank's board has recommended a dividend of Re 1 per equity share of the face value of Rs 2 per equity share for FY24. Shares of Axis Bank settled at Rs 1,063.70 apiece, up 0.69 per cent over the previous close on the BSE. The central bank has written a letter to all the agency banks that they should keep their designated branches open for over-the-counter transactions related to government transactions up to the normal working hours on March 31, 2023. It directed all government transactions done by agency banks for the Financial Year 2022-23 must be accounted for within the same financial year. It also added, "Transactions through <keyword id="891879" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-electronic-funds-transfer" source="Orion">National Electronic Funds Transfer</keyword> (<keyword id="285745" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="neft" source="Orion">NEFT</keyword>) and Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) System will continue up to 2400 hours (12 midnight) as hitherto on March 31, 2023." There are also plans to have water connectivity, and the plan is to connect the upcoming airport through hover craft from Colaba and through cargo from Raigad in Phase 2, an official release stated.
