A rare 1957 Mercedes just auctioned for $1.15 million — see inside the pristinely restored icon

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An Elkhart, Indiana-based businessperson was accused of fraud exceeding $100 million - now much of his unbelievable, $31 million car collection will be auctioned off to pay debts. </li><li>The expansive collection includes more than 240 collector cars from 1903 to the present day, 30 motorcycles, trucks, trailers, and one boat. </li><li>Some highlights of the massive car stash include a NASCAR race car driven by Jeff Gordon, a Ford GT supercar previously owned by hockey star Wayne Gretzky, and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing valued at more than $1 million.</li><li>Plus, there are dozens of weird vehicles, like a 1961 camper van, a 1927 firetruck, a 1981 DeLorean, and an eight-wheel-drive, amphibious ATV. </li><li>The collection, dubbed "The Elkhart Collection," will be sold through RM Sotheby's on October 23 and 24. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>A former CEO's collection of more than 240 cars - carrying a value well into the millions - will be <a href="https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/el20">auctioned off</a> to pay their debts, after they were accused of a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme.</p><p>Najeeb Khan, the founder and former head of Elkhart, Indiana-based payroll firm Interlogic Outsourcing Inc., was accused by KeyBank last year of fraud exceeding $100 million, Indiana newspaper <a href="https://www.southbendtribune.com/news/local/over-elkhart-collection-cars-owned-by-businessman-accused-of-fraud/article_e922c2c6-3968-11ea-913c-2fb0db7d6c77.html">The South Bend Tribune</a> reports. Khan then resigned from the company and filed for personal bankruptcy, and now Khan's huge car collection is up for auction through RM Sotheby's. </p><p>Court records obtained by <a href="https://www.southbendtribune.com/news/business/elkhart-company-founder-accused-of-fraud-had-million-fortune-including/article_32ce73ea-eb9a-5187-a650-5c0043ba2ca8.html">The South Bend Tribune</a> show that Khan had amassed a worth of roughly $98 million, but had liabilities totaling at least $126 million. To pay off creditors, a judge <a href="https://www.southbendtribune.com/news/local/over-elkhart-collection-cars-owned-by-businessman-accused-of-fraud/article_e922c2c6-3968-11ea-913c-2fb0db7d6c77.html">mandated</a> that Khan sell off much of the collection, which, according to bankruptcy filings, includes 281 vehicles and is valued at approximately <a href="https://www.southbendtribune.com/news/business/elkhart-company-founder-accused-of-fraud-had-million-fortune-including/article_32ce73ea-eb9a-5187-a650-5c0043ba2ca8.html">$31 million</a>. </p><p>Khan, at least, has a discerning eye when it comes to cars. The collection includes a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing worth upward of $1 million, multiple NASCAR race cars driven by legendary drivers, dozens of oddballs, scores of classic sports cars, a Ford GT owned by hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, and so much more. </p><p>Take a look at some of Khan's ridiculous stash of cars - which RM Sotheby's is calling "The Elkhart Collection" - below:</p>

<p>Police said <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">the speed limit of about 55 mph "<span>was not observed, obviously,"</span> and the two seat car <span>with </span><span>4-speed manual transmission</span> went off the side of the road and rolled over.</span></p>

Super Rare Mercedes Gets Totaled After Shop Mechanics Take It For A Joy Ride

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>According to RM Auctions, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 - originally sold to Steve McQueen, no less - was a highlight of the house's weekend bidding at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on California's Monterey Peninsula.</p>
<p>The "King of Cool's" Ferrari went for $10,175,000, which sounds impressive until you consider that a 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale was auctioned for more than twice that - $26,400,000.</p>
<p>As you can see from the preliminary list below, provided by RM Auctions, Ferrari ruled the weekend, with six cars topping the results and several other fetching a hammer price of over a million bucks.</p>
<p>Overall, Ferraris have become the most coveted vehicles in the collectible classic car world. The auctions associated with the Concours d'Elegance proved that beyond the shadow of a doubt.</p>

Ferraris Are Crushing It At Classic Car Auctions

<p>The SLS AMG debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009, and made waves with its gullwing doors and style reminiscent of the Mercedes 300SL Gullwing. There have been a bunch of different models of the beauty since then, including the Black Series, pictured here.</p>
<p>We're excited to see whatever the Germans create as a send-off, but are still a bit down in the dumps knowing the SLS AMG will soon be a thing of the past.</p>

Say Goodbye To The SLS AMG, Perhaps The Coolest Mercedes Of All Time

Perhaps that's why the company <a href="http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/57942/mario-kart-8-getting-mercedes-benz-dlc/" target="_blank">let Mercedes-Benz sponsor</a> three new cars into its cartoonish racing game for the Wii U, in the form of a free downloadable content (DLC) package set to release at the end of the month.</p>
<p class="p1">The company originally announced just one Mercedes-branded kart for Mario Kart 8 - the Mercedes-Benz GLA - but Nintendo has since added two new models to the game: the W25 Silver Arrow and the 300 SL Roadster, <a href="http://kotaku.com/mario-kart-8s-dlc-is-so-gross-1616697911" target="_blank">according to Kotaku's Luke Plunkett</a>. </p>

<p class="p1">Compared with the candy-colored karts of Mario Kart past, the Mercedes-Benz cars don't look cartoonish at all, and seem a bit out of place. Hopefully this isn't the start of a new trend for Mario Kart, where automakers can pay money to get their latest cars in Nintendo's beloved racing franchise.</p>

<p>Some were once owned by celebrities, like Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL; others are incredibly rare, like the 1929 Isotta Fraschini that went for a winning bid of $1.32 million. All are gorgeous, and worth a lot of money.</p>

25 Jaw-Dropping Rides Sold At Arizona's Classic Car Auction

<p>The 2000GT has been called "Toyota's E-Type" — a reference to the gorgeous Jaguar sports car from the 1960s — and "the best car you've never heard of."</p>
<p>The record-breaking car is one of only 351 examples ever built, and has been fully restored to its original condition, <a href="http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=1058397" target="_blank">according to RM Auctions</a>, which sold the car on April 27 as part of the Don Davis collection.</p>
<p>The 1967 beauty has a 2,000 cc six-cylinder engine that produces 150 brake horsepower, good for a top speed over 135 mph. It has only only 62,000 miles on the odometer.</p>
<p>At the same auction, a 1967 Ferrari 300 GTS sold for $1.9 million, and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing went for $1.2 million.</p>

Someone Paid $1.2 Million For A Gorgeous Old Toyota

<p>To find out how the leading auctioneer finds the <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword>, makes sure they're the real deal, and gets them on the block, we spoke with CEO Craig Jackson, who gave us an inside look at the whole process.</p>
<p>There are three basic steps: verification, price setting, and the auction:</p>
<h3><strong>Finding the Real McCoy</strong></h3>
<p>When a client brings a car to Barrett-Jackson, the first thing the auction house does is make sure it isn't being duped (likely by whoever sold the car to the current owner). Jackson has built a team of a dozen car experts, all of whom have expertise in one type of car or another.</p>
<p>The company was "founded by car people, and it's still run by car people," Jackson said. He himself owns about 30 vehicles.</p>
<p>His experts know their fields, and often have access to original automaker manufacturing records. As cars go up in value, Jackson said, frauds become more common, and better made. The fake cars come with forged paperwork, which is where the original records come in handy.</p>
<p>Since his team can't fully disassemble every car they look at, "s<span>ometimes things slip through the cracks," Jackson said</span>. But he's confident that their verification system is excellent. The company finds about ten fakes leading up to every auction, and it's not a fun conversation to have with the owner.</p>
<p>"Usually there's about ten seconds of silence on the other end of the phone," Jackson said.</p>

<h3><strong>Setting The Price</strong></h3>
<p>Unlike most auction houses, Barrett-Jackson sells most of its cars as "no reserve," meaning there's no minimum sale price, and no restriction on who the buyer is. That creates risk (since the car could sell for very little), but can also attract more potential buyers, and make the auction more exciting, Jackson said. Barrett-Jackson, he added, makes sure the seller understands the car's potential price point.</p>
<p>During economic downturns, sales flatten out, and owners usually hold off on selling. After 2008, though, the rare-car market came back quickly, Jackson explained. Now, "cars are bringing all-time high prices."</p>
<p>At Barrett-Jackson's January 2013 Scottsdale auction, it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-coolest-classic-cars-sold-at-scotsdales-barrett-jackson-auction-2013-1?op=1" target="_blank">sold dozens of cars for more than $100,000 each</a>, including a 1947 Talbot-Lago for over $2 million. Last month, an extremely rare <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ferrari-275-auction-pictures-2013-8" target="_blank">Ferrari sold for a record $27.5 million</a>.</p>
<p>Part of Barrett-Jackson's job is knowing who the buyers are, and what kinds of cars they want. These days, Mercedes-Benz Gullwings and Ferrari 330s are especially popular.</p>
<p>Today's market is drawing many Asian buyers, according to Jackson, and customers from Russia and the Middle East were at Scottsdale.</p>

<h3><strong>Building The Auction Bell Curve</strong></h3>
<p>Different <keyword id="53361" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="auctions">auctions</keyword> draw different buyers, so Barrett-Jackson carefully chooses where it sells each car. Scottsdale is mostly high-end, while Las Vegas is more across the board, with plenty of late model exotic and modified cars.</p>
<p>The key to a good auction, Jackson explained, is building a diverse docket of cars for each of the three days. The goal is a bell curve in terms of value, starting and ending with less expensive cars. A healthy of mix of vehicles throughout is crucial, to keep things fresh.</p>
<p>Parts of the auctions will be broadcast live (by Fox Sports and National Geographic), so the most interesting cars will be scheduled to be sold at those times. And it's all scheduled at least a month in advance (with allowance for the occasional last-minute entry).</p>
<p>The hundreds of cars that will cross the block in Las Vegas include a 1998 Ferrari F355 FI Spider, a <a href="http://www.barrett-jackson.com/application/onlinesubmission/lotdetails.aspx?ln=688&amp;aid=524" target="_blank">custom "Prowler"</a>, and a range of Corvettes from 1962 to 2009.</p>
<p>At the top of the line are the "Select Collection" cars, including a one-of-a-kind 1925 Rolls-Royce (specially outfitted by an Indian maharaja for Bengal tiger hunting expeditions), a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe, and a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTC. Each could sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.</p>

Here's How An Auction House Makes Sure Its Amazing Cars Sell For As Much As Possible

<p>Last weekend, the first <a href="http://www.thelondonclassiccarshow.co.uk/" target="_blank">London Classic Car Show</a> was hosted in the English capital, bringing together car enthusiasts and vintage rides from all over the region for display and to buy. </p>
<p>Prices generally spread from £100,000 to several millions, although there are often higher values that are not revealed because the seller will opt for a closed-door auction. </p>
<p>"For many, it is an investment," Samuel Laurence, a vintage car merchant in London, told Business Insider <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>. "They do not lose value. Rather, it rises."</p>
<p><a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/87081/best-classic-cars-to-buy-as-investments">Auto Express further supported that idea noting last year</a> that "classic cars are now seen as a much better investment than savings accounts."</p>
