I spent my days shopping Target's sales and catching up with friends. I watched my favorite TV shows and picked up fast food that I didn't have to share with anyone.Did I feel a tiny bit guilty? Yes. Was it worth it? Definitely yes.I always justified it in my head that it benefited my kids because they got back into their routine and saw their friends when they returned to day care. But really, it was a great way for me to acknowledge that being a mom is exhausting, and I deserved some time of my own.<h2 id="bc15ed2d-0cdd-4b11-a25f-4af9b0052ab2">My kids are older, and I still take time for myself</h2>I now have three teenagers, and my world differs significantly from those toddler-filled days. There are no day care dropoffs, but instead, rides to the thrift store or pickups of boba or frozen yogurt for after-school treats.I still make time for myself away from my kids, and I feel like it makes me a better mom. I take trips with friends where I'll be away from home for a weekend or longer. I agree to work trips where I might miss back-to-school nights or the annual school carnival.These opportunities help me to build my career and maintain my friendships, and they help my kids learn life skills while I am away.I am lucky that my husband is a very involved partner, but he has a job that doesn't always allow him to be home for dinnertime. My teens all have a few recipes they can make on their own, so they don't have to wait for Dad to get home for them to eat. I write up a schedule of who is in charge of the dishes and cleaning the kitchen while I am away (as the oldest complained that her brothers were leaving it all for her). But really, they do so well while I am away.Taking time for myself shows my kids that I am a person outside of being a mother. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, after all.

Johnston's financial claims have been verified with documents. It has been edited for length and clarity. I graduated from Boston University in 2006 with a degree in mechanical engineering. I then got a job in the semiconductor industry. The role allowed me unlimited creative freedom and had crazy big budgets. Life was good. A few years into this amazing job, things shifted. The 2008 recession hit, and though I survived layoffs, everything changed. Money dried up for creative projects, and suddenly, I was doing paperwork all day. After my wife Maddie finished school, we wanted a fresh start. We moved coasts onto a ranch in California. I found a new role at KLA Corporation, in manufacturing, with much less paperwork. When my wife told me she was pregnant, I had a steady job with a manageable workload, but I traveled frequently to China, Taiwan, and South Korea. Lincoln was around three years old, and suddenly my world narrowed to just four walls during lockdown. Instead of traveling and working in the office, my role was being permanently on the phone. I had meetings the entire day and would try to get my actual work done in the evening. Calls from around the world pushed late into the night. At some points, I worked almost 24 hours a day. Maddie, Lincoln, and I tried to maintain daily family life while we kept up with our careers. Now we were both fully remote, so we bought a beach house in Maine in 2020 and left California in 2021. But that wasn't the only reason we were moving back closer to home: our second baby was on the way. <div type="image" title="Michael Johnston and his kids." height="3357" width="1888" msid="114981168" hostid="261"></div><h2>Crunching numbers on <keyword id="21017792" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paternity-leave" source="keywords">paternity leave</keyword></h2>I fully intended to go back to work after paternity leave. I was making six figures doing work that I loved — prior to the pandemic shift — and my team was great. But over 12 weeks of leave, I fell in love with being a full-time dad. If I was up at 3 a.m. I was comforting a sleepless kid, not fielding international calls. It was some of the best times we'd had as a family. My wife has a successful career in editorial work, and we began examining whether we could afford to be a one-salary family. We'd spent our early career days digging out of student and credit card debt from moving around. Right before kids, we'd finally paid off our debt, which was tough even with two incomes. Moving back to Maine was a major savings opportunity. We streamlined our spending on our mortgage, rental property, two cars, and everything else it takes to run a family in California. We no longer had to pay for flights back, preschool or daycare. We dug into what life would look like on one income, and my financial projections showed it was doable in Maine. We walk the kids to school and don't have a pricey commute. We no longer pay for any day care — a drastic change from the insanely California options at around $2,000 for one child. Maine also has free breakfast and lunch at school. <h2>Deciding to stay home</h2>It came down to how we viewed our work. After maternity leave, my wife was excited to see her coworkers and jump back into her job. I saw work as a means to an end. My future wasn't ever really tied up in my workplace. I'd missed so much of my first child's youngest years that I was determined not to repeat that with my second. On the work front, I'd used my degree for 17 years and accomplished what I wanted to. A week or two before the end of my leave, I set my team up for success and gave my boss my two weeks' notice. <div type="image" title="Michael Johnston and his family." height="1690" width="2253" msid="114981165" hostid="261"></div><h2>Settling into full-time dad life</h2>The first few months were awesome. We knew we'd made the right choice. I walked the kids to school every day and got to experience small moments I'd previously been too busy to enjoy. I did have misconceptions about stay-at-home parenting life. I thought I'd renovate our 1954 Airstream during naps. Instead, I get up at 5:30 a.m., make lunches, have a cup of coffee for 15 minutes in peace, and then get everyone ready for school. Once my oldest is at school, my new mission is potty training. I'm lucky to grab a shower during naptime. I clean and reset the house for the evening, getting dishes under control and dinner started. My wife and I always split the cores, her taking the mental labor of organizing school and social life comms and I did more physical chores. This is now just more official – I manage school runs and all the household tasks. When others find out I'm a stay-at-home dad, they always ask: "When are you going back to work?" Maybe I will, maybe I won't. If I do, I'll have different boundaries. I spent too long wrapped up in my job. We are trained to graduate, get a good job, work that job forever, then retire at 65. I plowed along for long enough. Now I know a corporate job isn't a mandatory trajectory. It was a choice. I'm happy doing something different. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The 12-month on-ramp period for student-loan borrowers is ending on September 30.</li><li>The on-ramp ensured any missed student-loan payments wouldn't be reported to credit agencies.</li></ul>Student-loan borrowers have just one month left to benefit from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/do-i-have-to-resume-student-loan-payments-debt-relief-2023-7">a key debt relief program</a>.After federal student-loan payments resumed in October 2023 after an over three-year pause, President Joe Biden's Education Department implemented a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-happens-if-i-miss-student-loan-payments-on-ramp-2023-9">12-month on-ramp period</a>, during which the department would not report any missed payments to credit agencies.That meant that while interest was still accruing on borrowers' balances if they missed payments, they would not take any hits to their credit report that typically would happen if they fell behind.However, the on-ramp is ending on September 30, after which borrowers who miss payments will no longer be shielded from negative credit reporting. The Education Department has started sending emails to some borrowers who missed payments during the on-ramp, saying that "we want to make sure you're aware that these protections will end on Sept. 30, 2024."Once the on-ramp ends, borrowers who miss payments will be considered delinquent and reported to credit agencies. Missed payments also would not count toward any loan forgiveness or repayment programs, like Public Service Loan Forgiveness and income-driven repayment plans.A recent report from the Government Accountability Office found that just 40% of borrowers with scheduled payments greater than $0 were current on their payments, and 29% of them were past due as of January 2024. Jason Delisle, a senior fellow at the nonprofit thinktank Urban Institute, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/student-loan-borrowers-facing-touch-repayment-debt-cancellation-save-relief-2024-8">told Business Insider</a> that those numbers could signal borrowers taking advantage of the on-ramp and other forms of debt relief."There's also a chance that you'll have your loans forgiven, which the Biden administration has very much so kept front and center for folks," Delisle previously said. "Even if it's not going to happen, they've definitely led people to believe that it probably is."As these protections come to an end, millions of borrowers are already in forbearance due to legal challenges to Biden's new SAVE income-driven repayment plan, which is intended to lower monthly payments and provide a shorter timeline for loan forgiveness. Earlier this year, two separate groups of GOP state attorneys general filed lawsuits to block provisions of the SAVE plan.The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-plan-blocked-cheaper-student-loan-payments-relief-new-ruling-2024-8">ruled in favor of one of the groups</a> in early August, blocking the Education Department from implementing the plan in its entirety pending a final decision. The department <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/save-plan-blocked-justice-department-asks-supreme-court-cheaper-payments-2024-8">asked the Supreme Court</a> to reverse the ruling, but for now, 8 million enrolled borrowers are in limbo as they wait to find out whether they can continue making the lower payments through SAVE.At the same time, the department is finalizing its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-announces-new-student-loan-forgiveness-plan-who-qualifies-relief-2024-4">broader student-loan forgiveness plan</a> to go into effect in October. Expected to benefit over 30 million borrowers, the plan would give relief to borrowers who have made more than 20 years of payments and would cancel unpaid interest, among other provisions.However, with legal threats facing that plan, as well — and with the uncertainty of the presidential election — borrowers are gearing up for an uncertain end to the year.

The shift is notable because it runs counter to the companies and countries that are experimenting with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4-day-workweek-could-be-here-sooner-than-you-think-2024-3">four-day workweek</a>.Working longer hours can help people further refine their skills, but it can also lead to decreased productivity because of <a target="_blank" href="https://docs.iza.org/dp10722.pdf">fatigue</a> and burnout, research shows.The extra hours will come with a 40% jump in pay for Greek workers who add two hours to their day or take on an extra eight-hour workday. The change, which won approval in September, applies to workers in industries like agriculture, retail, and various service industries, as BI previously reported. It also applies to private businesses that operate 24 hours a day.Even with the bump in pay for the extra time, some union officials are decrying the shift."It makes no sense whatsoever," Akis Sotiropoulos, from the civil servants' union Adedy, told The Guardian. "When almost every other civilized country is enacting a four-day week, Greece decides to go the other way."<h2 id="2f876f4f-8d93-41e1-af11-7e1266033d55">Doing more with less</h2>Experiments with the four-day workweek have often shown being on the job for less time makes workers more productive because they're better rested, more focused, and have more time to attend to needs that arise in their personal lives outside work.One study that examined manufacturing in the US found that when overtime increased by 10%, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/241684896_Are_long_hours_reducing_productivity_in_manufacturing">productivity dropped</a> by 2% to 4%.Another review <a target="_blank" href="https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/721803">examined the output</a> of more than 10,000 skilled workers at a large tech company in India working from home. When time on the clock went up — including a jump of 18% outside normal work hours — output slipped, and productivity dropped between 8% and 19%. The biggest culprit: more time spent communicating and coordinating and less time engaging in uninterrupted work.Research shows workers often benefit when they have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-deal-with-stress-burnout-work-mental-health-professional-2023-11">time away from their jobs</a> to recover.Having more free time can also boost gratitude among employees. Zachary Toth runs a small manufacturing company in Toronto. He previously told BI that he and his management colleagues began looking into a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/four-day-workweek-companies-profits-workers-happier-efficient-takano-2023-7">four-day workweek</a> after seeing successful pilots in Japan and other countries.Toth didn't expect the extra time away from the factory would encourage workers to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/four-day-workweek-workers-showed-up-on-weekends-2023-12">show up without being asked</a>."They just came in because they knew there was a project that had to be finished, and they didn't want productivity to fall. They wanted to make sure we keep doing the four-day workweek," he said.Toth, the owner and president of Metex Corporation, said productivity has increased "in every single way."Basis Technologies, an advertising software company, shifted its workweek to four and a half days after years of experiments with a four-day workweek and other approaches. For 2024, it settled on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4-day-workweek-us-half-day-fridays-pros-and-cons-2024-1">making Fridays a half day</a>.Emily Barron, the company's executive vice president of talent and development, previously told BI that the company had been looking for ways to give workers more time to decompress while still meeting the business's needs. For now, the half-day approach is best, she said."It really is intended for people to take a mental break, to get caught up, to, you know, go to that workout class that they couldn't get to at 7:30 in the morning," Barron said.<h2 id="209c66e4-f60d-4e56-b0fc-57bb7401dc19">The end of the 5-day week</h2>In Greece, the longer workweek is designed to address changing demographics, which the country's prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has called a "ticking timebomb," according to the Guardian. Some 500,000 largely young and educated Greek citizens have left the country following a debt crisis that began more than a decade ago, the newspaper reported.The new rule is voluntary, but some critics say it will effectively mark the end of a five-day workweek.Aris Kazakos, an emeritus labor law professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dw.com/en/greece-introduces-the-six-day-work-week/a-69439050#:~:text=Employers%20can%20instruct%20staff%20to,the%20sixth%20day%20of%20labor.">told Germany's DW</a> news outlet that bosses can require workers to work a sixth day, and workers can't say no.The move to six days "will kill off the five-day workweek for good," he said.

He's excited for fans to see the highs and lows they go through as a team and what makes them more than <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nfl-players-wags-power-couples-ranked-2024-2">just football players</a>."I think that people think it's just a quick little practice, and then you go play a game because you're athletic and talented enough," he said. "That's not the case. It's a lot of work and mental stress."Morrison sat down with Business Insider to talk about a typical day at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/expanded-college-football-playoff-when-which-schools-qualify-2022-12">college football fall camp</a>, what inspires him to be a leader, and how his faith helps him persevere on and off the field.<h2 id="b2f9635f-930f-4e5f-b394-64d93f8ec4a8">Fall camp means long hours dedicated to football</h2>Before the season starts, players attend fall camp, which begins in August and lasts three to four weeks. It's an opportunity to get to know their coaches and teammates while preparing for the season and completing intense training regimens."Going into fall camp, going into my third season, I felt amazing," Morrison said. "It's just fun understanding what's at hand and what type of team we have."A typical day starts with Morrison waking up at 7 a.m. and heading to their training facility called the Guglielmino Athletics Complex, or what players have affectionately nicknamed the "Gug" (pronounced goog). This 96,000-square-foot facility houses the meeting rooms, coaches' offices, locker rooms, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-weight-room-beginner-personal-trainer-tips-2022-10">weight room equipment</a> areas."So, I get to the Gug at around 7:20 a.m., and then get taped, eat breakfast, do all that stuff," he said. "Then we're at a team meeting by 8 a.m. to go over the flow for practice, and we're on the field at 9 a.m."<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-football-playoff-teams-schools-2022-11">The Fighting Irish</a> always start practice with ball disruptions. This means practicing how to take the ball away from the opposing offense."We learn to attack the ball in different ways, how to figure out the ball carrier, and how we can get the ball out," he said. "Then we go into pre-practice and go over some small formations, and we'll warm up and attack in practice."<h2 id="ce80393c-faf1-44c2-9ebf-e9ca5d510481">There's time for a mid-day nap to recharge</h2>After practice, the players have a 45 to 60-minute break. Morrison prefers to spend his downtime taking a "power nap.""This will get me through the day to restart, reload, and then get back going," he said. He also enjoys listening to music because it helps him unwind and reminds him of his family, especially his mom and siblings."Music gets me through life," he said. "I love listening to my music and relaxing.He's a big fan of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lin-manuel-miranda-work-ethic-hamilton-success-2017-12">Hamilton soundtrack</a> and anything by Adele. "I feel like I'm grounded," he said. "You can just pick a tune that really resonates with what you're going through in life and just kind of take it in."<h2 id="98caad2d-337c-4017-833e-eff1455ae7ae">The day continues with more training until 8 p.m.</h2>During team meetings, they recap what happened earlier in the day. "We'll discuss things we can improve on, and how we want to approach the season," he said.As a player and team captain, Morrison never wants to become complacent. He defines complacency as the moment you stop thinking you can improve."No matter win or loss, I want to improve and become the best version of myself and the best teammate I can be," he said. "The moment I become complacent, I hope my cleats are off because I don't want to ever be complacent in this sport."After strategizing with the team, "we'll go lift, and we'll eat and have a walkthrough, and then a little team meeting, and that's the day," he said. "So, I'll end around 8:00 p.m. and get back to the Gug."The time spent in the weight room is integral to training. "Lifting is kind of our foundation, and we pride ourselves on lifts," he said."We have a long season, so we've got to make sure our bodies are up to par with the high demand that football requires," he said. "I think <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/strength-training-better-cardio-burning-fat-2023-10">lifting is what makes us more durable</a>, able to go longer, run longer, and do things at a high level."<h2 id="fbf9a16f-6fe0-430a-b78b-299526c6bd13">Morrison attributes his leadership style to his family and faith</h2>As the youngest of five siblings, who all play competitive sports, Morrison has always felt like he needed to prove himself to his siblings and older friends. "I just pride myself on working hard and not talking a lot," he said.Getting a word in was tough with four siblings, so he learned to "fall in line," and it's similar with football. "I understand that I have a leadership role, but I like to lead by example like how I was raised," he said.Being team captain is a "huge responsibility," he said. "I think Coach Freeman talked about how you have to be unorthodox and challenge things, and I pride myself on standing true to who I am and who I know the team could be."For Morrison, faith means everything. "Last year, I got away from it a little bit," he said. "And I realized I'm nothing without God. I can have all the success and be empty inside."Going forward, his plan is to remain humble and recognize that he's not perfect. "If I just <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/left-goldman-sachs-career-change-pastor-2024-4">honor God</a> in everything I do, the rest will be taken care of," he said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>President-elect Donald Trump proposed an up-to 60% tariff on imports from China and 10-20% on goods from other countries.</li><li>Trade and industry experts said the proposals would likely increase costs in areas like apparel and technology.</li></ul>President-elect Donald Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-higher-inflation-fed-interest-rates-taxes-mortgage-rates-2024-11">has big plans for tariffs</a>. If implemented, Americans could see prices rise across several product categories.Some companies that produce apparel and auto parts have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-raising-prices-trump-tariffs-inflation-goods-getting-more-expensive-2024-11">already started preparing to raise prices</a> if Trump enacts his plans, and some trade experts predicted that a range of industries, including electronics and appliances, would see higher prices.Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Peterson Institute for International Economics, told Business Insider that Trump could implement his proposed tariff on China imports quickly — within the first half of 2025 — using an authority in the Trade Act, but she said it's a possibility that the president-elect will not follow through on the 60% tariff he proposed on the campaign trail. He also proposed a 10% to 20% tariff on goods imported from other countries."Nothing is taxed at 60% right now, so every sector is vulnerable to seeing higher tariffs," Lovely said, adding that she would expect a lower tariff, like 20% or 25%. There's also the question of how much of the tariff burden will fall on consumers, Lovely said, and a lot of it depends on the mechanisms Trump uses to implement the tariffs.Trump has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-expensive-goods-price-impact-presidential-election-scenarios-trump-harris-2024-10#imported-goods">said</a> that his tariff proposals would not impact consumer prices and would serve as a tax on other countries and boost American manufacturing. The impacts of his previous tariffs were mixed. In 2018, for example, tariffs on washing machines <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/21/business/trump-tariffs-washing-machines.html">caused</a> prices to rise on laundry items. The smaller 30% to 50% tariffs on imports from China that Trump implemented in his first term were not found to be inflationary, and President Joe Biden kept most of them in place."Consumers are going to be at a burden, but it may take some time for them to feel it, like a slow drip," Lovely said.Still, Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation, said it's reasonable for both companies and consumers to prepare for higher prices. He told BI that companies are already concerned."Whether it's a finished good or an input to production, anything that gets brought into the country from somewhere else is going to get hit with that tax," Gold said.When asked about tariffs' impacts on inflation, Trump's spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said, "In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs against China that created jobs, spurred investment, and resulted in no inflation."Based on analyses from economists and trade experts, here are the goods that could become more expensive for Americans under Trump's tariff proposals.<h2 id="6bd7d9e5-1349-490e-afe7-bfcfe6c706de">Apparel and shoes</h2>With Trump's proposals in place, the National Retail Federation <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://cdn.nrf.com/sites/default/files/2024-11/Estimated_Impacts_of_Proposed_Tariffs_on_Imports_11.24_0.pdf">estimated</a> that prices for apparel would increase by 12.5%, prices for footwear would increase by 18.1%, and travel goods — which include backpacks and wallets — would increase by 13%.Retailers that source more than 20% of their goods from China, including Crocs and American Eagle, are at higher risk from Trump's tariff proposals, a Bank of America research note <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/06/trump-proposed-tariffs-consumer-prices.html">said</a>. The two companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI on whether they are adjusting their business plans in anticipation of the tariffs.Some retailers have already announced preparations to increase prices should Trump's tariff plans go into effect. Columbia Sportswear CEO Tim Boyle said during an October earnings call that he is "very concerned about the imposition of tariffs." He later <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/10/30/companies-tariffs-trump-prices/">told</a> The Washington Post that the company is "set to raise prices" in response to Trump's plans.<h2 id="901a0f6a-c8c4-4040-adc4-f59680460559">Electronics</h2>An October <a target="_blank" href="https://shop.cta.tech/products/how-the-proposed-trump-tariffs-increase-prices-for-consumer-technology-products">report</a> from the Consumer Technology Association estimated that the proposed tariffs would increase laptop and tablet costs by 45%, smartphone costs by 25.8%, video game consoles by 39%, and televisions by 9%.China is a major supplier of electronic products, so everyday products that Americans use — like smartphones and laptops — would likely see price increases. The CTA report said that in 2023, China accounted for 87% of US video game console imports, 78% of smartphone imports, and 79% of laptop and tablet imports.While some companies could try to shift their production out of China, Gold said it's not an easy process."You can't change a supply chain overnight," Gold said. "It takes months, if not years, to be able to find a new vendor that you're comfortable with that can meet all of your different requirements, has the capacity, the skilled workforce, the infrastructure works within the country."<h2 id="4af3509a-5a51-43d4-a381-392f563c0881">Cars</h2>Major car companies import auto parts from China, Mexico, and Europe, and some executives have already warned that the industry would likely face higher prices under Trump's tariffs. Philip Daniele, CEO of auto-parts company AutoZone, said during a September earnings call that if Trump carries out his tariff plans, "we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer.""We generally raise prices ahead of that," Daniele said, adding that prices would settle over time. "So, that's historically what we've done."Shinji Aoyama, Honda's executive vice president, said on a November earnings call that Trump's proposals will have a "big impact" not just on Honda but on other car companies like General Motors and Ford. Still, he said he thinks it would take some time for the tariffs to be imposed, and at that point, Honda might consider moving production to a country that is not subjected to US tariffs.Lovely said that auto parts are an area where a lot of production is coming from China, so it's "very reasonable" to prepare for price increases. But shifting production would present difficulties because if Trump implements his 10% to 20% universal tariff, "you don't really know if there's any safe place," she said.<h2 id="8651f485-c0c8-4b71-a554-448306a5b630">Furniture</h2>The National Retail Federation report estimated that a 10% universal tariff and a 60% tariff on imports from China would increase furniture costs by 6.4%. Specifically, the report said a $200 crib could end up costing $213 after tariffs, and a $2,000 mattress and box spring could rise to $2,128.The NRF added in its report that the higher costs would hit low-income households the hardest: "They spend twice as much of their after-tax income on furniture as high-income households."Additionally, Henrik Elm, the CFO for Inter Ikea — the group that connects Ikea stores with suppliers — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/ikea-ready-potential-tariffs-under-trump-cfo-says-2024-11-08/">told</a> Reuters that the company is preparing for higher tariffs under Trump, saying that Ikea has worked to make its supply chain more responsive to changes."I think we are better equipped than we have been ever before," Elm said, adding that "of course we are not immune to changes."<h2 id="4b90402b-7b3d-4fb9-b4c4-8ce9e4ee75d4">Appliances</h2>NPR <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2019/04/09/711001915/tariffs-complex-ripple-effects-hit-appliance-shoppers-and-makers">reported</a> in 2019 that Americans were seeing higher prices on appliances like washing machines after Trump implemented a 20% tariff on the product. The NRF report said it expects appliance pieces to rise again under Trump's higher tariff proposals with a 19.4% price increase on items including stoves, fridges, dishwashers, and blenders.Under the analysis, the price of a basic fridge would rise from about $650 to $776.Gold said it's unlikely Trump's tariffs would go into effect on day one or day two, and "it's tough to say right now at what point consumers would feel the impact.""It could also depend upon the individual companies and what their tariff mitigation plans are and how much they can try and lessen the impact on the consumers," Gold said. "Obviously, larger companies might have little more ability to do that than small, medium-sized folks who really can't absorb the impact of the tariff and would immediately have to pass on those costs."<h2 id="e555aa7a-b2a3-4f94-b3aa-dae3f12d768a">Groceries</h2>Trump vowed to lower grocery prices for Americans — during a town hall in September, he said he would lower grocery prices by restricting food imports to promote production in the US. However, his tariff plans could increase grocery prices.A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.thirdway.org/report/what-trumps-tariffs-mean-for-your-trip-to-the-store">report</a> from centrist think tank ThirdWay said that Trump's tariff proposals analyzed eight common purchases that the US either heavily imports or is unable to produce domestically. Using data from the International Trade Commission, the report estimated that coffee costs would rise by $0.23, frozen beef prices would rise by $1.09, and olive oil prices would rise by $0.31.Taylor Rogers, the Republican National Committee spokesperson, previously told BI that "Trump will once again cut taxes and unleash American energy to lower prices on groceries and other goods when we send him back to the White House."
